Chapter 15- The Baker & The Cupcake
I was walking in the forest when, suddenly, a deer walked up to me on its hind legs. Yes, its hind legs. It was wearing a cap, a tie, and had some shades on. It tapped my shoulder and I simply stood there and stared at it, not sure what to do. Part of me was terrified at the fact this deer was extremely human-like, and the other part was trying to keep my calm and handle the situation well. However, it suddenly pulled out a gun, and before I could say anything, it shot me. I died.
After it happened, I woke up sweating and my heart was hammering inside my chest. I angrily grabbed my phone and for about a second, the brightness instantly made my eyes go half blind. I immediately squinted, trying to protect my eyes from the light, and then lowered it. Finally, my eyes adjusted to the brightness and I unlocked my phone. I frowned when I took notice of what time it was.
4:32am.
I hadn't been able sleep in peace all night. I kept waking up repeatedly and mentally cursed myself for ever letting Aiden talk me into allowing a freaking deer in my home. I was too scared to go out and actually open every door just to look for that stupid animal. However, I knew the time would come, and I feared for the moment when a deer could possibly fall out and land on top of me. Heck, I even had a nightmare because of it.
After several attempts at trying to fall asleep, I decided it was useless, so I went to the Messages application and texted Aiden. He was probably asleep but it was worth the try. If I wasn't going to be able to get any sleep, then neither should he. He didn't deserve it.
[To: Aiden]
Your stupid deer has kept me awake for the past five hours.
I didn't really expect to receive a message from him at this time so I started scrolling through my Instagram timeline. I hadn't really gone on it for about a week, which was shocking, considering I would usually check it several times a day. I guess with everything going on, I just haven't had much time or energy to even use my phone much lately.
Wow, who have I become? I actually kind of have a life!
I went on the notifications tab and found two follow requests.
Well, that's new.
Now, don't take this the wrong way. I'm not actually that big of a loser. In fact, I know quite a lot of people and am not really the super anti-social type, but I'm one of those people who believe more in the quality of friends rather than the quantity. Well, Aiden being an odd exception to that. I didn't just accept anyone's request just to get more likes. For all I know, they could be creeps who want keep up with my personal life. No thank you.
I clicked on the requests and wasn't too surprised when I found they were from Aiden and Blake. I accepted Blake's request right away, and followed him, but I went on Aiden's profile before making my final decision on whether to accept his or not. And, of course, his profile was on private.
Everything about him was so mysterious. It seems like he's an easy person to figure out, but when you really think about it, he doesn't really let people go past the surface. I was barely finding out about his personal life, didn't even know his age yet, had no idea who those girls he always meets up with were, discovered he's actually got some kind of personal relationship with God or whatever, he never really talked much about himself at all, and his instagram profile was on private. He kept a lot to himself. In reality, I sometimes wondered if I even knew Aiden at all.
All his bio said was, "I have a passion for eating tacos on Tuesdays."
I found that incredibly stupid and irrelevant, but it made me smile. It was good enough to get me to accept his request, and then I proceeded to send him a request myself.
A second later, I got a text notification from him. Huh, he's awake.
[From: Aiden]
Are you telling me it came back to life?
I rolled my eyes at this before beginning to text back.
[To: Aiden]
You know what I meant. I even had a nightmare about it. Where the heck did you put it?
[From: Aiden]
Aw, poor you. And you'll find out soon enough ;)
[To: Aiden]
Dude, this isn't funny! It's bad enough you made me keep it. At least tell me where you put it!!
[From: Aiden]
Sleep well, cupcake. Nighty night :)
I narrowed my eyes at the screen even though he couldn't see me and then groaned. I wasn't even going to try arguing with him. He was going to pay for this.
Oh, you just wait Aiden. Things aren't going to stay like this.
--
I had finally managed to fall back asleep but, sadly, that was over soon when I was awoken by a horrified, blood-curling scream. My eyes immediately shot open and I quickly jumped out of bed, causing me to lose my balance and fall. I slowly got back up, letting my knees gain back the proper strength to be able to walk normally again. When my body felt a little more awake, I checked my phone and noticed it was 6:57am. Dang it. I was supposed to be up at 6 o'clock.
I shook my head, realizing that wasn't my main priority at the moment.
My mind was set on figuring out what the scream was all about. As I started making my way over to Blue's room, all the memories from last night came flooding back and I stopped dead in my tracks when realization hit me.
Oh no.
The deer.
"JUNE!" Blue yelled, and I bit my lip. Oh, this is bad.
She kept yelling like a madwoman and I was starting to think this was worse than I expected. I quickly ran over to her room and found a dead deer along several boxes all over her. Oh, goodness.
The second her eyes met mine, she began to yell again.
"WHY WAS THERE A FREAKING DEER IN MY CLOSET?!' She asked furiously, tears making their way down her cheeks.
Vegetarians...
"I-I can explain." I started, my eyes frantically scanning the scene in front of me as guilt washed over me. "But first, I need to get that deer off of you." I said, kneeling down and pushing the deer off of Blue. I immediately gagged when the dead deer scent reached my nostrils.
"Oh gosh...that-that is not pleasant." I mumbled, and Blue narrowed her eyes at me.
"Yeah, try being under it." She grumbled, standing up and looking at the deer once more. She then proceeded to make a gagging noise herself and shuttered before looking back at me. "Now, will you explain to me how this thing got here?"
I let out an awkward laugh and avoided looking at her in the eyes, still drowning in guilt. I began to twirl the tips of my hair, and then let out a sigh.
"Let's just say Aiden hit it and tried to save it. Obviously, he didn't succeed, and now we have to go dump it in the trash." I explained, narrowing it down for her. It was too long of a story and I had no time to lose. I could just tell her the rest later.
"I promise I'll explain everything later. I need to hurry, Aiden will be here any minute." I said, and as if on cue, the doorbell rang. My eyes widened and I ran back to my room.
"Tell him I'll be out in ten!" I yelled and shut my door.
I began to get ready and took what is probably the quickest shower in my life.
I slipped on a pale pink hoodie, some skinny jeans, and then ran out. I didn't wash my hair, so that was not a problem, and had no time to wear any makeup. All in all, I looked half dead thanks to Aiden and his dumb deer.
I slipped my phone in my pocket and walked back to the living room, where I found Aiden and Blue eating—not so shockingly—some yogurt. Next to the couch lay a black garbage bag with what I guessed was a deer. It wasn't hard to recognize the smell of death.
"I'm ready!" I announced, slightly out of breath.
They both turned their heads to look at me at the same time and Aiden raised his eyebrows.
"Uh, good morning." He said, eyeing me from bottom to top.
I decided to ignore his actions, knowing if I asked, he'd probably come up with some really sweet things to say that I didn't really feel like listening to. Note sarcasm.
"I'm ready. Let's go dump that deer." I said as I started making my way out the door.
"June..." Aiden said, and I turned to look at him.
"What?"
"You forgot to put shoes on." He told me, looking down at my feet, and Blue laughed.
I looked down at my naked feet and wiggled my toes. He was right. I was going to forget my shoes.
I walked over to the shoe closet and slipped on a pair of all white adidas.
"Now I'm ready." I announced proudly, and they both just chuckled.
We said goodbye to Blue and apologized one last time for the whole thing. It was going to take a lot to repay her for this one.
When we arrived to Aiden's car, he put the deer in the back of his trunk, got in the front, and began to drive.
As his eyes were set on the road, I turned my head to look at him and found myself frowning when I noticed he looked good as new while I was struggling to even look human.
His hair was a little messier than usual. It looked like he had just brushed it out with his fingers and yet, it still looked good. He was wearing a grey hoodie, skinny jeans, and of course, a pair of black vans. I envied the fact he didn't even have to try. It wasn't fair he looked like this when he was the reason I couldn't even brush my hair today.
"Stop staring, cupcake. You're gonna make me blush." He said, snapping me out of my thoughts. Right when he did, a blush of my own made it's way onto my cheeks. Oh, just great.
"Sorry." I looked away, embarrassed at my failed attempt to be discrete.
He just smiled, and I was glad he didn't say anything after that. I didn't need him telling me how I was checking him out or trying to get me to admit I found him attractive. That was never going to happen.
We were silent for the rest of the car ride, only listening to the distant sound of music on the radio playing. I looked out the window and smiled as I felt the warmth of the sun coming up hit my face. It was still early and the sun was at that point where it makes the sky a beautiful combination of orange, yellow, and pink.
Painting sunsets had always been one of my favorite things to paint. It never fails to impress me how every single sunset is different. You could be at the exact same spot, in the same exact week, at the exact same time on different days, and no matter what, the sunset will never be the same. Its beauty is unique everyday. I love it.
After a few minutes, we finally arrived at the graffiti spot. To my surprise, there were no new things on the wall. I let a small smile onto my face as I spotted all the irrelevant words we'd written on the wall that night we got arrested.
I guess sometimes bad choices really do make the best stories.
"Help me?" Aiden asked and I nodded.
"I guess."
He took out the deer and then we walked over to the garbage can. I lifted the top while he carried the bag and after a few seconds, he still didn't throw the deer inside.
"Are you ever going to throw it away or what? I can assure you it really has no hope left." I stated, and a smile began to form on his face.
"I know that." He rolled his eyes playfully, letting out a laugh. "I just think to honor its death, we should name it."
I smiled, amused at his idea. "Fair enough."
"What shall we name it?" He asked, rubbing his chin as if he were in deep thought. Suddenly, his eyes brightened up and he pointed his finger up, indicating he came up with an idea.
"Deery!" He said enthusiastically, grinning proudly.
In all honesty, I thought that was a really dumb name. However, he looked so happy and genuinely proud of his idea that I couldn't bring myself to tell him so.
"Yeah!" I said, laughing at how happy he looked just because of such a simple thing.
"Okay, great." He started. "Here we are, gathered together to honor the death of our dear deer Deery." He said seriously, and I had to hold back a laugh. He gave me a look and I quickly gained back my composure, but a small smile still remained on my face.
"Deery was a great deer. Fought hard to stay alive. In the few moments I had with Deery, I learned she had a heart and she was heavy. This shows me a lot of love lived inside Deery before her tragic death. Deery will always remain in our hearts. Now, a few words from June." He deadpanned, wiping away a fake tear and I nodded in fake sadness.
"Deery was a deer whose presence was always noticeable—except that time Aiden ran her over, of course. However, I learned a lot from Deery. I learned where a deer's heart is, you can smell it from miles away, and it will always be there when you can't sleep at night. I dreamt, literally, of Deery and her determined soul. She will always be remembered." I said, and Aiden smiled.
"That was beautiful." He told me, nodding at me proudly the same way your mother would. "Now, we will put her to rest in peace." He said quietly, and dumped the bag inside the garbage can.
We stood there in silence for about five seconds and then looked at each other. I bit my lip to prevent myself from laughing but failed miserably when the sound of Aiden's laughter filled the air, causing me to start laughing as well.
"You're the biggest idiot I've ever met." I said in between laughs.
"Oh, you love it." He said and I rolled my eyes playfully. He kept his eyes on me and there was a soft smile on his face but he didn't say anything. I stood there awkwardly, not liking the fact he was just staring at me. Especially when I looked like this. After a couple of seconds, I couldn't stand it anymore so I spoke.
"Why do you keep looking at me?" I asked, feeling my cheeks heat up for the second time today.
"I didn't know you had freckles." He pointed out, still looking at me as if he were studying my face.
"You've seen me without makeup before, though." I reminded him, referring to the day he got drunk and stayed at my place.
"I know. But I hadn't really noticed them." He admitted, shrugging lightly.
"Oh. Uh, well, I do. I usually cover them but I didn't have time today." I said, looking down at the ground, suddenly feeling self-conscious.
He frowned at my discomfort and spoke.
"Well, I think they're cute. You should show them off more." He told me, and I looked back up at him, his eyes honest.
I smiled at his compliment, placing a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Thanks." I replied shyly, and he chuckled at my awkwardness.
"Alright, let's get going. It's already 7:45." He said, and we headed back to the car.
--
We both ran inside the classroom at exactly 7:59am.
We were both panting and my heart was beating fast. The whole class stared at us the same way you'd look at an alien who just walked in the classroom.
Not sure if it was because we had practically barged in and made a scene or because people found it weird for me and Aiden to be together as we walked in. Yes, we had walked in together once before but it looked a lot more casual and not many thought much of it. Now, however, it looked like they all had all made up their own stories on what exactly was the reason behind our behavior.
Mr. Falkov rolled his eyes at us and then motioned us to go take a seat.
"Right on time." He said and Aiden smirked proudly, knowing Mr. Falkov would have been more than pleased if we'd been late because it would have meant we had to get kicked out of the course. Obviously, he wanted us gone. It was no secret he hated both of us.
A few seconds after we took a seat, a guy walked in. He wasn't part of the course, and several girls around the room were eyeing him already—me included.
He had swishy brown hair, gorgeous brown eyes, and olive skin. He stood at a height of about 5'11 and had a very clean-cut kind of style. All in all, the guy was pretty attractive.
Wow, my lucky day. The day a cute boy comes in I look like a zombie. Just dandy!
He walked up to Mr. Falkov and for the first time, I saw him smile.
Huh, who knew beneath all that bitterness the old man could actually express happiness?
"Class, it is an honor to introduce to all of you, an extraordinary artist, Joey Baker. Some of you might've heard of him." He said, a proud smile on his face.
I could tell he was that kind of guy who would be a completely different person the second he met parents, people of a higher authority than him, or celebrities, putting on this sweet fake smile no one ever really saw. Hypocrite.
However, a smile made its way onto my face when I realized I recognized the name. Joey Baker was this super talented artist and a lot of his abstract paintings were amazing. He was like the artist version of underground musicians. If I get my game together he might just be impressed with some of my work.
"Hey everyone. I'm going to spend the next week working with some of you and help you learn some of the things I learned when I once attended this program. I'm excited see what you guys are made of." Joey said enthusiastically, flashing a genuine smile at all of us.
You could tell he really loved art. He had that glowy kind of aura, the one that inspired you to really be passionate about what you love to do.
He walked to my side of the classroom and our eyes met for a second. He smiled at me and I immediately returned it. I noticed Aiden quickly turned to look at me and narrowed his eyes for about half a second before looking back at Joey. It was so quick I wasn't even sure if it actually happened.
"As you already know, the work you've done so far is being judged. The top four people whose portraits got the highest scores will be working with me on some stuff." He continued, and then turned to look at Mr. Falkov to have him finish explaining.
"I will be putting up the list of scores for your portraits on the wall now. You may look at them when I am done." He said, and as he walked to over to put the paper on the wall, everyone began to chatter.
You could hear people talking about how nervous they were, hoping they'd gotten a good score. I feared for the person who had the lowest. It would be devastating to be that person. Now, I didn't want to sound conceited, but I knew I had done a great job on mine. I was confident I'd gotten a high score. If there is one thing I am secure about, it's my art skills. It's the one thing I know how to really do and I make sure I put my all into it. I rather be great at one thing than average at many things. I'm competitive and I don't back down from challenges. I'm determined to win this thing.
"You think you did well?" I asked, turning to look at both boys sitting beside me.
"Of course I did well." Aiden said over-confidently.
That was something he and I have in common. We're proud of our skills and we recognize our good work. Also, we're both competitive and love challenges. Maybe that's why when we met it was like two tornadoes joined. We make a mess on the outside. We're loud and put ourselves out there, but we also have moments where it's like we're the eye of a hurricane. With all the craziness going on, we can also be calm and collected when we want to be. We definitely do not go under the 'opposites attract' category. Or maybe we do.
Blake rolled his eyes playfully at Aiden's statement and then smiled at me.
"I think I did pretty well. Like I said, realistic stuff isn't my forte but I definitely think I didn't do a terrible job either." He said, his tone hopeful. I could tell he was acting positively because perhaps if he were the opposite then things really would be bad.
I liked that about Blake. He never seemed to let things bring him down. Sometimes I wondered how someone could be so positive all the time. I wasn't exactly a pessimistic person but I certainly wasn't a ball of sunshine either. I kept a balance. Blake just seemed happy all the time. It was good to have someone like that around.
As soon as the list was up, we all ran towards it and the teacher immediately scolded us for 'acting like animals', making us get in line.
I was nervous to find out who was first but I was certain I would be at least in the top five. Heck, even Aiden was impressed, and his work was astonishing.
Finally, it was my turn to see the list. Aiden was right behind me so we both got to look at it at the same time.
"No way!" I said, and Aiden began to laugh at me.
"Ha! Who's your daddy?!" He said, and I cringed.
"Please don't say that ever again." I told him, and let out another laugh.
"Remember that night we went to the fair?" He asked, and all the flashbacks of me beating him at that game came back to me. I still had the huge bunny sitting in my room.
"Yeah, this is payback." He smirked, making me squint my eyes at him.
"I will get you back, Blackwood." I said, poking his chest and walking back to my seat. He followed after me and then sat down as well.
Although I was slightly bummed that I got the second best score, I had to admit Aiden really did a good job on his painting. He deserved it. I didn't fully understand his whole art story yet but I could tell things hadn't just been handed to him. He got the male scholarship to enter the course and that meant he really wanted it. He didn't just stay with mommy and daddy's project. I felt like this was something he did for himself to show he was capable of actually earning something by his hard work. I couldn't help but feel kind of happy for him. It reminded me of how Blue worked hard to accomplish her goals. She didn't let her dad's money be the reason she got to where she got.
Shortly after, Blake joined us again and we asked how he'd done.
"I hate both of you. You make me feel like such a loser. I was 11th." He said, and I gave him a pitiful smile.
"Hey, it's okay. I bet your sculpture got a high score. We all have our own gift." I reassured him, and he smiled.
"Thanks, June."
I turned to Aiden and smirked, thinking of something that had to be pointed out.
"You know, although I'm still better than you, I'm glad you got first place. Knowing Mr. Falkov had to give the highest score to the student he hates the most definitely brings me a certain satisfaction that may be almost just as great as the one I would've gotten if my score had been the highest." I said, and both boys started laughing, realizing what I said was true.
I could just imagine Falkov's face when he saw Aiden's work. It was also quite funny how he also hated me and I had gotten the second highest score. I think we just enjoyed making him mad now.
"That's very true. I bet he got all red and did that old man face he does." He said, imitating him, and Blake and I began to laugh at the accuracy.
Suddenly, Joey came up to our table and silence fell upon us.
"Hey! You must be Aiden." He said, shaking his hand and Aiden just raised an eyebrow, putting on a more serious face.
"Yeah, that's me." He replied, his voice suddenly seeming cooler and slightly lower. Joey just smiled awkwardly, noticing Aiden's tension towards him.
I glared at Aiden, not understanding why he was being so rude to someone who was clearly trying to be friendly.
"Uh, well, it's an honor to meet you. I really liked that painting. Very original." Joey added, still being kind enough to compliment Aiden, despite the fact he was being so cold towards him.
"Thanks." Aiden replied dryly, and Blake smirked while I frowned at both of them. I wasn't sure why Aiden was being so blunt and I certainly did not understand why Blake was smirking at his actions.
What is wrong with the male species?
Feeling bad about Aiden's behavior, I instantly spoke, trying to brighten up the atmosphere.
"Hi, I'm June!" I smiled, and Joey's eyes met mine once again. He quickly fixed his hair a bit and then shook my hand, smiling back at me.
"Oh, I know who you are. Huge fan of your work. Your style is very rare and unique. I love it." He complimented, and I felt my cheeks heat up as I grinned.
"Aw, thank you so much! And I of yours. It's such an honor to be able to work with you." I said, my voice's pitch slightly higher than usual.
"I'm lucky to be able to share my passion with such a talented, pretty girl. I owe my uncle for letting me come." He winked, and I giggled.
Did I actually just giggle?
Oh goodness, I'm going to puke.
"Your uncle?" I asked, not quite sure how to respond to his flirty comment, a confused expression on my face.
"Yeah, Mr. Falkov is my uncle." He chuckled, and Aiden snotted, which made Blake laugh and made me scowl.
He was really behaving like a child today.
"Why are you laughing?" I asked, rolling my eyes at his immaturity and he didn't bother replying but just continued to laugh instead.
I felt extremely embarrassed having to sit with these two idiots while Joey stood there, obviously confused as to why they'd think being Falkov's nephew was so freaking funny. I got the same feeling a mother would get when her children embarrass her in public.
I gave both of them death glares and while Blake was quick to calm down, Aiden kept letting out annoying, short laughs. It was obvious he was just doing it to annoy me. I quickly shot Joey an apologetic look and let out a nervous laugh.
"I'm so sorry. I'm not sure what's wrong with him." I started, giving Aiden a look. "Please forgive them." I apologized, and he smiled.
"It's completely fine. I know what it's like having to get paired up with an idiot." He said, waving his hand dismissively. My mouth was slightly agape when he said that and I had to bite my lip to try and hide my smile.
Aiden immediately narrowed his eyes at him, clearly not finding the situation so funny anymore. He opened his mouth to speak when, thankfully, the teacher spoke, preventing him from being able to say anything.
Joey had a smug look on his face and walked away, going back up to the front of the class.
I quickly glanced at Aiden and found him with an extremely annoyed look on his face. He was clenching his jaw and when he caught me staring, he gave me a look. A look that clearly meant he wasn't just annoyed at Joey's comment but also at the fact I'd sided with him by smiling at what he'd said.
I rolled my eyes, not really caring. I had every right to be annoyed. He was the one being rude and annoying. Joey only reacted that way because Aiden provoked him. He looked for it.
--
I watched him teach us a new technique and smiled when I realized all the wonders of it as I tried doing it myself. It was definitely a lot more efficient and smoother. It made painting realistic textures a lot better looking.
"Yeah, that's great!" Joey said, taking a look at my first attempt. I smiled proudly and he gave me a thumbs up.
He walked over next to Aiden's canvas and studied his work. His arms were crossed and he looked deep in thought as he stared at the painting, his eyebrows knitted together and his lip slightly pouting.
"I think that looks fine. Maybe you could work a little on the smoothness of the texture. Remember, you want this to be realistic. I know it's hard getting rid of the harsh strokes of abstract painting but just relax your hand and you'll get it. It's good for a first try, though." He said. All through his explanation, he made movements with his hands as if he were holding an invisible brush and Aiden rolled his eyes after he left, mumbling a simple 'thanks'.
"Why are you so annoyed at him?" I asked, not being able to contain myself.
He turned his head and rolled his eyes at me. "Maybe because of the stupid little comment he made? Was it not obvious?" He replied sassily.
I walked closer to him so people wouldn't see us discussing this outloud and whispered,
"You were being rude even before that."
He stood there for a second, staring at my face blankly, and then opened his mouth to speak. However, no words came out and he did that several times before finally making up his mind on what to say.
"I don't like him." He stated simply, and I raised my eyebrows, skeptical towards his vague comment.
"That's invalid. You don't know him. Plus, he was nice to us until you decided to be a jerk for whatever reason." I said, putting my hands on my hips, expecting a more reasonable answer.
He put his paintbrush down and scratched the back of his neck, clearly not wanting to admit what had his panties in a twist. I raised an eyebrow, still waiting for him to speak, and he rolled his eyes.
"Because a cupcake for the baker, am I right?" He mumbled, quickly turning around and grabbing his paintbrush again, and I frowned.
A cupcake for the Baker? What was that supposed to mean?
He started practicing his texture technique again, and I quickly snatched the paintbrush out of his hands, demanding full attention. Yeah, go ahead, call me needy.
"What does that even mean?" I asked, raising my voice, narrowing my eyes in confusion.
He scowled at me, not liking the fact I took his paintbrush so abruptly. I ignored this, and refused to take my eyes off of his. I wasn't going to let him embarrass me or get away with his actions like always. I wanted an explanation and I was going to get it.
"Are you really that oblivious? Is it not obvious?" He asked, and I knitted my eyebrows together, not saying anything.
He forced an incredulous laugh, shaking his head at my naïveness.
"Forget it." He said bluntly, breaking eye contact and taking back his paintbrush.
I stood there, not sure what I was feeling. His expression had changed to a soft one, and seemed somewhat upset. I couldn't quite understand what it was that bothered him so much. It was frustrating when it came to trying to read Aiden. Or maybe, I was just extremely oblivious. I figured he didn't want to discuss this any longer and went back to my spot, beginning to paint again.
I was slightly annoyed at the fact I let him get away again without getting an explanation. However, I honestly didn't feel like arguing with him again. I would find out sooner or later...hopefully.
Suddenly, I looked to my left, feeling a stare. I noticed a pair of blue eyes looking at me and he smiled. I gave him a questioning look and he lifted up his phone, trying to tell me I should
check mine.
I took it out and saw a text from him.
He's jealous.
I looked back at Blake, a frown still on my face because of the text I'd just read. All he did was smirk and nod his head.
I turned to look at Aiden again, who seemed completely focused on his work, and then bit my lip.
Aiden was jealous?
--
