Chapter 31 | life finds a way

Like the supportive dad he was, your father was fast to get down to the city to see your portrait in person and meet your mysterious new boyfriend. The weekend came quick, and he was texting you he'd be off the train by 5 the moment he was in the city.

You'd told him to come around the side of the museum and you'd let him in. At 5:50 exactly.

At this point you were starting to think you should get Larry a massive thank you gift for him always letting you in and allowing you to bring an extra. The mad absolutely did not get paid enough to wrangle a rowdy museum all night, every night AND deal with magic shenanigans. But he insisted that it was ok, and that the museum exhibits and those connected to them were his friends and he'd be glad to help them out.

Ahk still thought you and him should get Larry something nice that Christmas though, as a thank you.

The sun was just on the horizon when your dad knocked on the side door to the museum and you let him in, his timing perfect.

"Hey kiddo!" He smiled.

"Daaadddd you made it!" You replied, the two of you sharing a hug.

"How's my little artist going?"

"Definitely very good, I have A LOT to tell you tonight..."

A lot was an understatement, he was about to have his whole life turned upside down. But first, it was probably a good idea to fill him in on the whole being allowed in the museum after closing deal. You lead him to the main entrance where Larry was at the front desk waiting on the sun to vanish behind the horizon.

"Dad, Larry. Larry, dad. He's the night guard who puts up with my bullshit and let's us in" you introduced.

"Hi, thanks for letting me gate crash" your dad said, shaking the guards hand.

"It's fine, I've got a kid to. I'd want to see his winning portrait as well" Larry replied.

"Oh you do? How old?"

"14 now, that angsty teenager stage"

"Oh yes I remember that..." your dad teased, giving you a glare.

You rolled your eyes and gently whacked him. You weren't THAT bad as a teen, a little emo sure but not that bad.

"So uh... there's kind of something you should know about this place by the way" you said.

He gave you a confused look, what could be so special about a regular museum.

"You see, my mysterious boyfriend you'll be meeting his currently in the Egyptian wing waiting for his own parents to wake up. Which will be..." you began.

Larry look a look at his watch.

"...3 minutes" he said.

"Wow good timing. This whole museum kinda wakes up at night, you'll see what I mean. See that T-Rex?"

Your dad turned to look at Rexy, frozen in place. He was confused, what on earth were you talking about?

"Yeah?" He replied.

"Don't freak out when he moves. He's nice" you said.

Your dad was under the impression you meant it was animatronic or something, and as the clock quickly ticked down you and Larry watched on for the reaction of your father. As soon as the sun dropped behind the horizon, right before his eyes, Rexy moved.

Stepping back slightly in shock, your dad stared up at the now living T-Rex skeleton as it stepped down from its platform and immediately went up to you to stiff the new person.

"Hey, don't terrorise the newbie ok? Now... who wants fetch huh?" Larry said.

Rexy wagged his tail like a dog, and with one hard throw Larry launched the bone down the hall so Rexy would chase after it. As soon as you and your dad turned around to watch, the halls started filling up with exhibits coming from their designated spots.

"See what I mean by come to life?" You said.

"What the- how? Hang on what's going on?" Your dad stammered.

"Yeaaaahh I was kinda like that too. Long story, I'll explain once everyone is accounted for"

The next exhibit to show up was of course, Teddy. Being right by the front desk as usual he was quick to make his way over.

"Ah, mx (y/n). Welcome back, and this must me your father we've heard about" he said.

"Yep, here to have his mind turn to mush when I explain this whole situation to him" you replied.

"With that shocked expression I can tell he's in for a night. Theodore Roosevelt 26th president of the United States, pleasure to meet you sir" Teddy introduced, shaking your dads hand.

"Uh, I'm (d/n)... wow this is really happening I'm talking to a living statue of a president" your dad said.

You and Larry couldn't help but snicker at his confusion and shock.

"Yes it does catch people off guard the first time it happens. But I assure you the museum is under control and in good hands with Lawrence here. Just keep your keys close or the monkey will steal them" Teddy said.

"That reminds me I gotta make sure Dexter doesn't get his hands on the minis again..." Larry muttered.

As cute and funny as Dexter was, he was a troublemaker that's for sure. You learnt quickly to keep any shiny things away from him unless you want them stolen. And to not be around when he and Larry have one of their petty arguments unless you wanna get used as a public bathroom. Ugh.

"We should make sure everyone is accounted for, leave the two to head over to Egypt" Teddy said.

"We should. We'll catch up with you guys later" Larry replied.

Parting ways you lead your dad over to the Egyptian wing, on the way passing many live exhibits that made your dad stop and stare a few times. You expected him to be a bit shocked so you weren't all that phased when he made a comment of surprised. And of course you had to mention to be careful to not step on any minis which made him rather aware of where he put his foot down.

At the entrance of the Egyptian exhibit, the jackals stood guard as usual, looking down at you menacingly.

"Come on guys I'm literally bound by the tablet. You know me, let us in" you teased.

They let you through, only listing to Ahk, his family and you when it came to orders.

"Are they meant to be like... Anubis or something? Should I be worried?" Your dad asked.

"They're just the Pharaoh's guards, they're cool. And... you know how I said my boyfriends name was Ahkmenrah?"

As you approached the sarcophagus area, Ahkmenrah and his parents stood alive outside their coffins head to toe in pharaoh attire. Even though Ahk didn't really need to wear it with his access to modern clothes now, he still liked it. Plus, he was with his parents after all, they'd expect him to be dressed fancy.

It suddenly clicked in your dads mind when he saw Ahkmenrah in person, and the image of your portrait came to mind. He wasn't named after Ahkmenrah... he WAS Ahkmenrah.

"(Y/n)! My guardian!" Ahk smiled, noticing your arrival.

He pulled you into a hug and lifted you off the ground slightly, placing a kiss on your cheek.

"All dripped out?" You smiled.

"Of course. Can't be seen in anything dull as a Pharaoh"

He put you down, and turned his attention to your dad behind you who had just had his mind throughly exploded.

"Dad, this is Ahkmenrah. And his parents Shepseheret and Merenkahre" you introduced.

"Wow... I'm sorry I feel like I'm having a fever dream right now" he replied.

"Most people do when they first see all this. But don't worry, we'll explain everything. And it's a pleasure to meet you, you've raised a wonderful person, words cannot describe my devotion to (y/n)" Ahkmenrah said.

Ah, what a suck up. He was always such a flatterer, oh how you loved him.

"Sit down, we'll explain everything"
