Chapter 25 | arrival

This morning, the crates containing the sarcophagus's of Ahkmenrahs parents and some of their artefacts arrived at the museum and would be put up for display after the museum closed.

It'd been a few weeks since Larry managed to convince the museums to collaborate and have them on display here for a while. And a few weeks since you'd gotten that sudden dizzy spell from the tablet. In that time you'd been waiting, you hadn't felt that different. You still needed answers to this whole thing though, you'd been branded by a magic tablet after all. That isn't something that just happens to anyone.

These few weeks of waiting had been nerve wracking. No matter how many times Ahk insisted it'd be ok, you were nervous to meet his parents. Sensing your nerves, Ahk had gotten into your craft supplies and made you some jewellery to match his, so you could at least feel a little more fancy in the presence of pharaohs. He was quite good at craft, the matching necklace and bracelet set had quickly become your favourite accessories to wear.

You dug through your closet, looking for something even remotely nice to wear. You felt like you needed to put in some effort here, again they were pharaohs. You didn't have many fancy outfits, you'd just never needed them. Your closet consisted of mainly paint stained shirts and jeans, whatever was comfortable and suited the weather.

"You know you don't have to dress up, you're already beautiful" Ahkmenrah insisted.

"I know but... I feel like I need to be at least a bit presentable. Your family are all royals Ahk" you replied.

He knew what you meant, even though he was insistent you didn't need anything fancy to be beautiful, he knew the feeling of wanting that boost of confidence.

"Well we have a few hours until the museum closes. If you want we could go out shopping, use some of that prize money" he suggested.

"Actually that's not a bad idea..." you replied, closing the closet doors and turning to put some shoes on.

Ahkmenrahs pharaoh attire hung on a coat hanger on the back of your door, as he'd taken his usual afternoon nap in one of your shirts. You took note of the colours, patterns and style hoping you might be able to find something similar. Ahk was rather fond of taking outings into the modern world, and you knew now to avoid any potential triggers. Going out was a lot easier for him now he was more used to it, and knew where and what to avoid. That didn't stop him from keeping his arms wrapped around yours when you walked down the streets to stay close to you.

So you ventured out into the streets down to the shopping strip.

"I know it'll probably be fine... but just in case-" you began, looking around at the shops.

"You're overthinking darling" Ahk cut you off.

"I know... but hypothetically, if they didn't like me..."

"Which won't happen, they'll love you"

He was persistent wasn't he?

"I know but HYPOTHETICALLY, what would you do?" You asked.

"As much as I love and miss my parents, I spent my whole life with them. If they don't want me to spend the rest of my afterlife with you then I won't tolerate that. I spent my life with them, I can spend my afterlife with you" Ahk replied.

You got what he meant, he loved his parents but he'd spent so much time with them compared to you. He wanted more time with you.

Spotting a formal wear shop, you turned into it and looked around at the walls lined with dresses, suits, play suits and heels.

"Wow... formal fashion looks very different nowadays..." Ahk muttered, taking in the all the colours of garments around him.

One of the employees noticed the two of you looking around and approached you, customer service voice and all.

"Hi! Can I help you two?" They asked.

"Do you have anything in gold?" You asked, figuring you'd match Ahk's golden robes.

"We do have a small selection of gold, any particular style or cut?" The employee replied.

You and Ahk exchanged glances, thinking about what would look good. His eyes fell to the necklace he'd made you hanging around your neck.

"Something that shows off the jewellery perhaps?" He suggested.

"Oh yeah! Good idea" you replied.

The employee looked around the shop for a moment before leading you over to a rack of dresses and play suits. They pulled off a few options, holding them up for you to inspect.

"Ooh... these are all so pretty..." you muttered, scanning each option.

One was a long sleeveless gown with a train, one was a play suit with spaghetti straps and flared legs. The final one was a straight cut dress with one strap over the shoulder that resembled robes. A sheer layer over the solid silky one that was littered with tiny specks of glitter that reflected in the light.

"(Y/n), this one! You have to at least try it on" Ahkmenrah smiled, pointing the final one out.

"I was eyeing that one too... I'll try it on" you agreed.

The employee lead to you the change rooms and handed you the dress to try on. While you were changing, the employee approached Ahk waiting by the entrance to the changing area.

"What's the event?" They asked.

He couldn't exactly say the truth could he? Meeting pharaoh parents in a museum was a bit uh... unbelievable. But he could use the opportunity to flex your recent win on everyone who'd listen.

"They won an art award recently, my parents will be at the ceremony too so they're both meeting my parents and accepting the award" Ahk explained.

"Wow, must be a petty big deal if they're having a whole ceremony for the winners"

"They won judges choice so it's a bit of a big deal, and their work is being displayed in a museum"

Ahkmenrah was shamelessly extremely proud of you, and wanted everyone to know how talented you were. He'd brag about you to anyone, anytime he got the chance.

"Impressive, you seem proud of them" the employee playfully teased.

"I am... so proud, so so proud" Ahk sighed, like a dreamy highschool girl talking about her crush.

The changing room door unlocked, and you stepped out to show off the dress. Catching the attention of Ahk and the employee, they both looked up at you.

"Ah! It's gorgeous! Does it fit alright?" The employee said, coming over to check the sizing on you and adjust it if needed.

Ahk was mesmerised, eyes glued to you absolutely smitten.

"It fits pretty good actually, I like it" you said.

Ahkmenrah didn't have words, all he could think was 'how did I find someone so beautiful?' He smiled, coming closer to take you in in all your beauty.

"It suits you, especially if you pulled your hair up at the sides that'd look perfect!" The employee complimented.

"Makes me feel like some kind of pharaoh in all the gold" you replied, giving Ahk a knowing look.

The one shoulder look showed off the skin on your collarbones which kept emphasis on your necklace. The blue and gold beads shined along with the sheer lather over the dress, the silky fabric gave it a soft shine and it ended just below your ankles leaving room to show off any fancy shoes you paired with it.

"Gods you're a god in the flesh..." Ahk muttered, awe struck.

"Suck up" you teased.

"Look at yourself (y/n)!"

He turned you by the shoulders to look in the mirror at the end of the hall. A much bigger one than in the changing rooms that captured the whole look fell top to bottom. You'd admit... you did like the look. It made you feel a lot fancier than you were. It gave you they extra boost of confidence you needed.

"Well... maybe I do suit it" you admitted.

"I told you, Hathor carved you from the finest jewels and gold and bought you to life with all her love. You're a ray of sunshine, my guardian" Ahkmenrah rambled.

The employee couldn't help but smile at how smitten he was, it wasn't often the boyfriend that was dragged along shopping was as invested as their partner was. It was a cute sight to see.

"Well I think it's safe to say this is the one" you said.

"It's perfect, you'd look good in anything. But this... this is perfect" Ahk smiled.

Maybe if you looked as regal as he did in his golden robes, you'd be seen as his equal by everyone else. Even if you already were, it gave you the confidence to be sure of it.
