Chapter 14 | puzzle.
"So you're telling me, you've been awake and roaming around all day?" Teddy repeated, amazed.
"Yes, all day. And I feel no different to how I usually am at night" Ahkmenrah replied.
The main gang huddled around the tablet, and your hand out on the table showing the marking. Having printed out your findings, you laid them out as well.
"It does look exactly like the picture, you're right... maybe there's something about this in all the carvings" Larry suggested, comparing the eye in the depictions of Ahkmenrah to the one on your hand.
"I didn't even think of that, good idea" you replied.
You handed the papers to Ahk, who give them a quick flip through to see how many photos there were.
"Can you read them?" You asked.
"I should be able to, unless something is missing or worn down" he replied.
Scanning through the pictures of the tomb, all the hieroglyphs on the walls and pictures depicting stories he tried to make sense of. Some he recognised immediately, as they were common in his time.
"These ones are just the creation of life story and the burial rituals, so nothing out of the ordinary" he said, flipping to the next page.
No one else could read the glyphs, but still looked over his shoulder in fascination.
"This wall is my family tree, there's details about my birth, reign and my parents" he muttered, again flipping to the next page.
The next page had the wall with the carvings of Khonsu you identified before, and you eagerly pointed to the carving to identify it.
"This is Khonsu, I made that connection earlier" you said.
"It is! Well done (y/n), you know your gods" he smiled.
Something about the phrase 'well done' felt so nice, especially from Ahk. You wanted to giggle and kick your legs like a kid in joy.
"This section here is praising Khonsu, and this part here is... where the tablet was. It was on the wall with Khonsu? Must be because of his association with the moon, and the tablet working at night" Ahkmenrah pondered.
"I was thinking the tablet had something to do with Khonsu when I noticed that, maybe he's the one that powers it? Your family worships him right?" You asked.
"We do, yes. Maybe it is his doing, my father was very adamant about praising him"
Flipping the page again, the photos were of the same wall but over to the right, where a massive block of glyphs was carved from top to bottom of the tomb.
"This is... about the tablet. Mostly stuff we already know, it working at night, it being for me, it's power to call those under it's influence to it... unsurprisingly it seems my father didn't put any major secrets on the walls to keep it secret from my brother" Ahk sighed.
On the last page were close ups of a few of the pillars that were also decorated with carvings and hieroglyphs. Ahk needed to bring the page up a bit closer to read the smaller writing, and once deciphered he seemed rather intrigued.
"Interesting... I don't recall ever having a discussion like this with my parents..." he muttered.
"What's it say?" You asked.
"It's a poem.
Upon the rise of the sun,
The light touches the land.
Upon the rise of the moon,
The darkness cools the sand.
Under the stars they dance,
Two souls become one.
And when the sun rises again,
The deed is done"
Thinking over the meaning, everyone seemed to come to the same conclusion.
"A love poem?" You asked.
"It seems like it, I don't recall my parents telling me this one though" Ahkmenrah replied.
"Perhaps they wrote it as a tribute to your loss, the fact you never got to wed" Teddy suggested.
Ahkmenrah read it over again, looking for anything he might have missed.
"Maybe, perhaps it's just art" he suggested.
"Art usually has meaning through" you said.
"Does it have another meaning in the original language?" Sacajawea asked.
She might be onto something there. Languages can change the meaning and structure of a poem, so perhaps a translated version doesn't have the full context.
Ahkmenrah read it over again, this time in his long dead language of ancient Egyptian, to you and the others it didn't make any sense. But to him, of course it made perfect sense. Each word carried a meaning and definition much different to English, yet conveyed the same message.
"I can't see any hidden pat-" Ahk began, before a glow cut him off.
Looking down at the tablet, it was slowly lighting itself up, each of the squares containing symbols illuminated in a golden glow. Everyone looked down at it in fascination, not expecting it.
"Maybe it's a spell? And it's triggered by your mother tongue" Sacajawea suggested.
"What's it doing? I haven't seen it do this before" Ahk muttered.
He carefully touched it, wondering if anything would happen. He didn't feel a shock like last time, or any kind of sensation.
"(Y/n), your hand-" Larry pointed out.
You looked down at it, the marking glowing along with the tablet.
"Oh gods, what now?" You said, a little worried.
"Does it hurt?" Teddy asked.
"No it feels fine..."
After a minute or two of mysterious glowing, it stoped and died down. Absolutely nothing feeling odd or out of the ordinary.
"What just-" you began.
"I don't know. I'm rather sick of not knowing anything, but I don't know" Ahkmenrah replied.
At a complete loss again, this time with a mysterious poem-spell as a trigger, you were all stumped and frustrated.
"Well... I guess all we can really do is keep an eye on things and see what happens. I mean clearly the two of you are connected somehow from the moment you touched the tablet, hence why Ahk was awake in the day and you just... glowed" Larry sighed.
"I'm afraid you're right, guardian of Brooklyn. We can't do anything but observe..." Ahkmenrah replied, defeated.
So in 48 hours you'd been branded by a magic tablet, had a weird dream thing, gotten shocked by said tablet, had a living mummy on your house and had a strange spell cast. Lovely.
And all of it was absolutely no answers. Even more lovely.
But you didn't feel sick, sore, lightheaded, or any negative emotions. In fact you felt rather well rested despite your recent lack of sleep. So as long as nothing harmful came of this, you could live with it.
"I mean I'm not hurt or dead so I suppose I can live with just waiting and seeing" you shrugged.
"That's it mx (y/n), look for the bright side of things!" Teddy smiled, lightening the mood.
"Yes I suppose if nothing bad is happening, we can take our time to figure it out" Ahkmenrah replied.
With nothing else to explore about the situation, everyone figured they'd just forget about it for a while and enjoy the rest of the night as usual. If it weren't for the sudden magic shenanigans you'd have held an art class today. On the weekend perhaps, when you had more time to plan one.
"Well with that out of the way, I want to take a little sticky beak at the new space area. See how much they've done" you said, getting up to go take a peek.
"Sticky beak... that's a new one" Ahkmenrah giggled, following you down the hallways of the museum.
"My favourite way of saying I'm a snoop. It's a fun phrase, sticky beak"
Having to dodge some minis using the hallway for chariot racing, you reached the taped off door, and only opened it a crack to not trigger the security system. Peeking inside it was rather dark, but you could still make some things out. All the foundations were done, the roof in a big dome shape, markings for seating on the ground and the frame for a tech booth at the far back.
"Oh I see! It's going to be like an observatory, and they'll probably project all the galaxies onto the roof. I'm guessing this wires are to hang exhibits" you said.
Ahk peeked through the crack too, taking in the new exhibit slowly coming together.
"I'd say this is going to be about the history of space exploration. Like the moon landing and satellites" he said.
"You're probably right. Man it's going to be cool, I totally have to paint the stars when it's done" you replied.
"I'd love to see that, the stars and beautiful already but crafted by your hand I'm sure they'll be even more beautiful"
Ah, what a suck up. He was such a sucker for your art, anyone would think he's in love with your pencils rather than you. But you both knew it was you he'd fallen hard and fast for, your art skills just a bonus attractive feature of yours.
"This would be a really good place for a date when it's done. Just lying under the stars and watching them, passing planets and galaxies as they're projected up on the roof. It'd be like flying through space with your lover" you said.
"You're giving me ideas" he replied.
"I'll look forward to that, a star date. Sounds beautiful"
"Not as beautiful as you my guardian"
