Chapter 13 | modern.

It was like watching a curious child. He was amazed by the small things, like your lava lamp and the toaster. Being ancient and only having been exposed to Cambridge and the museum he did know a fair bit about the modern world, but not all of it.

It was amusing to watch him wander around your apartment, pressing buttons and picking things up to examine them.

Eventually he came to your CD rack, where he sat looking through all the different ones you had. He knew what a CD was, Larry had explained them when he bought a DVD to watch. So he knew one played movies and one played songs, but he'd never actually seen an album before.

"I know most people use streaming services nowadays, on their computers or phones. But I like collecting CDs" you explained.

"You have so many..." he muttered, reading the track list on the back of one of them.

"I've been collecting them since I was a kid, hence why there's some kids nursery rhyme ones in the mix"

You were still baffled by the whole situation, you had no idea how he was alive during the day. And you were slightly on edge something would happen and he's turn back into a mummy on your lounge room floor. But so far he seemed to be fine, completely normal as if it was still night. Still in his usual pharaoh gear, he was definitely standing out against all your modern stuff. The messy art desk behind him made him look rather out of place, but he was obviously entertained by all your devices.

"You feel ok? No dying or anything?" You checked.

"I feel fine, honestly I'm not sure what's going on but I don't mind it. I haven't seen the sun in so long. Although I'll admit I'm a bit tired, I've been awake much longer than usual" he replied.

"Take a nap if you want. I'm sure I've got something that'll fit you for pyjamas"

He thought about it, part of him wanted to keep poking around modern things, but he was also getting sleepy.

"Hmm, maybe a short one. I still want to learn modern things" he replied.

"I'll wake you up in a few hours then. I'll see if I can figure out what the hell is going on in the meantime"

You dug around your closet for something that would fit him, and ended up finding a button down shirt that was too big for you, you'd used it as part of a Halloween costume a few years back, but would probably fit him like a nightgown. He hung up all his robes on some coat hangers and put them on the back of your door, and you allowed him to take a nap in your bed with the windows tightly drawn to keep the sun out. Maybe if he properly slept, for the first time in years, something would happen or change with the tablet. At this point you were grasping at straws looking for any solution.

You went right to your computer, hoping to find anything you possibly could on the symbol on your hand. Trying as many keywords as you could like 'ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs' and 'eye of Horus symbol' you looked high and low for even an image that resembled it.

An eye, with winged eyeliner. That's how you'd describe it. Not quite the eye of Horus but similar. Surely it would have to show up on a carving or painting somewhere right? The tablet gave it to you, and the tablet was made in ancient Egypt so it HAD to be some kind of hieroglyph.

You'd scrolled so far you'd ended up on the 7th page of google, and found nothing. It all just lead you back to the eye of Horus. The eye of Horus represents well-being and protection, so if the symbol on your hand was somehow related to it you wouldn't be too fussed to have some kind of well-being spell on you. But it just didn't look the same, it couldn't be the eye of Horus.

"Come on... give me something, anything..." you sighed.

You went back to the search bar, and this time typed in 'hand symbol myths' hoping that something might show up.

There were a few myths out there, the curse of the black spot was a pirate myth about being marked by a siren for death. But you were dealing with ancient Egypt here not pirates. There was also a few tales about birthmarks and scars being in your hand, but this symbol on you wasn't a birthmark or scar. It was more like a branding than anything.

You were at a loss, you had no idea what it could possibly be.

Your last thought was to try and figure out what the symbols on the tablet meant, so you pulled up the picture you'd taken of it and set out to match them up with various hieroglyphs. Ahkemrah knew what almost of them meant, but it was an old tablet, it was worn form in places and chipped so it was a little hard to make out everything. Plus, his father never told him the full power of the tablet.

You put together the obvious ones first. The eye of Horus for well-being, there was a basket with a handle for the harvest, a vulture for strength, some hands meant spirit, and the Ankh symbol for life. It seems most of the symbols were various types of sigils for positive effects. You weren't sure if the symbol on the top was the sun or the moon, as some of it was chipped off, but it seemed to be one of the two.

Hoping an archive from a study paper might have a better picture, you looked up the tablet of Ahkmenrah to use as a better reference picture. You found the website that documented the findings from his tomb and looked through its contents for a good picture of the tablet.

As you looked over all the pictures of the artefacts, you got to pictures of the inside of the tomb itself, which is when something finally clicked.

On the walls of the tomb, many carvings and paintings were decorated on it. And right by where the sarcophagus was found a massive carving of Ahkmenrah himself was on full display. In the classic ancient Egyptian style, he resembled the figure on his sarcophagus too. It was the way his eyes were carved that caught your attention.

Holding your hand up to the screen to compare, and zooming in on the carvings eye, it looked exactly the same. The thicker top line, the winged eyeliner look, the solid pupil and the shape. It was the exact same. The the eye on your hand was Ahkmenrah's, which made sense since it came from HIS tablet.

"Of course... it's HIS tablet that branded me" you muttered.

Looking through for rest of the pictures for any more clues, you saw a lot of carvings and totems of a god with a bird head and circle on his head so you looked up which one it was too.

Khonsu, the moon god. So Ahks family must have worshipped him or something, funny, you assumed it would be rah since Ahk and his brothers names ended in Rah. But it seemed Khonsu was their god of choice. Not only was he a moon god, but one associated with time, fertility and travelling.

Perhaps the fertility part was what inspired the tablets powers to bring things to life, since fertility creates life.

You still had no idea exactly what the marking on your hand meant, but at least you knew it was meant to be Ahkmenrah's eye.

Seeing it had been a few hours, you figured you'd keep your promise and wake him up now. Plus, you had to tell him your findings. You almost didn't want to wake him when you opened the door and saw him elegantly asleep under the blankets, his head resting on the pillows as if he was posing for a painting. How did me manage to make everything look elegant?

"Ahk" you said, gently shaking him.

He stirred, slowly coming back to his senses.

"Wakey wakey pharaoh, I've figured something out" you said.

He rubbed his eyes, sitting up and taking a moment to properly wake up.

"It feels a lot different being in a bed..." he muttered.

"I bet sleep feels different from death too" you replied.

"Very"

He stretched his arms out, even if he was sleeping in a bed and not a sarcophagus, his joints still felt stiff. That's was being locked up in a coffin for 54 years does to you.

"Any dreams?" You asked.

"Not sure, I haven't had one in years. Maybe it was a dream but I didn't see anything, just heard some noises" he explained.

"Might have just been me moving around"

"Maybe, anyway you said you figured something out?"

You sat on the bed next to him, holding out your hand to show the branding again.

"I looked up some stuff about your tomb right? The marking on my hand is the same way they carved your eye on the walls of the tomb" you explained.

He grabbed your hand, to take a closer look and traced the lines with his fingers.

"You're right..! I can't believe I didn't realise that. It's the same one on my sarcophagus as well, that's my eye..." he replied.

"I'm still not sure what it means, but it appeared when I touched YOUR tablet, so clearly it's marked me as yours or something" you said.

"Maybe teddy is right, maybe it is some kind of love spell. It only showed up after we kissed after all..."

"Well I for one wouldn't mind a love spell if it means I get to kiss you again"

You have him a cheeky smirk, one he returned with equal amounts of flirtation.

"Are you suggesting you wish to date the dead guy?" He joked.

"Maybe I do wish to date the dead guy, I mean you're very alive now. Not like I'm kissing a corpse" you replied.

"Perhaps the dead guy will accept that request"

"Good, because clearly the tablet wants us together anyway"
