the answer is no, they don't.

no matter how much they say "We only want to welfare of our country to be better than it ever was" its all lies.

you see, politicians couldn't care less about the citizens. They only care about gaining power and popularity, because in politics the mor epopular you grow and the more people that 'love' you, the more money you earn.

they don't care what happens to the citizens, they just need money and power.

but then there are exceptions, let's take the prime minister of New Zealand as an example.

unlike most politicians, she does care about her citizens and make sure there's proper welfare.

of course, this is only if the people have extremely good luck.

now, let's talk about the country I currently live in, which is India.
I'll explain what mentality of most people here is like, not all are like this but most are.

the people here can be tricked easily, either by money or extreme kindness or high self confidence which makes us think
'they seem so confident about their decisions and know what they're doing, maybe we can trust them'

and with money, get yourself a hundred thousand or so rupees and there you go. You can then bribe any greedy Indian within a few seconds. But at times you'll find such greedy Indians they'll say "What have you taken me for? you think I'll accept such a small amount of money?"

now you may think, "I've never really seen greedy Indians before". It depends on the region you stay in. Most Indians in South India are easy to trick with self confidence and kindness, the rest around 10% or so can't be easily tricked. Almost everyone in North India can be tricked, mostly by enough money but in rare cases by kindness. In the North-East, it's much different there. To put it out simple, violence is the only answer is what most people there believe. Besides Uttar Pradesh, the North-East Indian states have some of the most violence in all of India. Those states may have beauty but it can be very dangerous there due to the violence.

The parts of the North-East Indian states was told to me by a classmate who's from Nagaland(which is located in the region).

The parts of North India, I've seen it way too many times to know how greedy people here can be.

And for the South Indian parts, I did my research and found out about it.

now, put it all together. This is the thing most Indian politicians focus on. And that's how they run their campaigns in different regions of India. It's only to make sure they win. Otherwise they don't give a shit about the citizens.

and a thing I can confidently say and most might agree with me, India has not had a good ruler in all of its existence. It kind of seems like a dream now, having an actual good prime minister of India.

and that's what I want to change, I want to be a genuinely good prime minister and am doing my best. I don't need the money to live luxuries if my fellow citizens are starving and dying.
