[3] Why?

Triple Update!

Reader POV

I remembered my mother telling me to conceal the blood spells that required more than a speck.

It's dangerous to have blood magic as only two known people in the world have that magic, dear. Protect that magic.

But I never envisioned to have to use my magic on a scale that I would have to in the future.

I knew my mother came from the witches forest and I had a good idea that I was related to the witch queen herself.

"Peasant scum!"

I heard this term on a daily basis, gripping my wrist tightly as blood trickled down.

I always kept my nails quite short since it got irritating when I played the violin and they were long.

"Filthy commoner!"

I looked over to Shino who was glaring at them.

"You're such a brat," he spat at Nebra. "And no wonder no man likes you-or woman for that matter! You say she's a filthy commoner, but she's more powerful than you! Not to mention her hair isn't an ugly rat's nest."

I smiled, trying to hold in my laughter.

"And not to mention you're not even old enough to officially be part of this squad! You're only 14. Show respect to us!"

"Pfft. As if I'd respect a repulsive commoner! Lord Shino, I will respect you, but not her."

I looked down at my letter, suddenly remembering that I had to deliver it. "Shino, I'll be right back."

I ran through the halls, my witches' hat almost falling off.

I ran faster and just grabbed my hat in my hands, placing the letter inside so I would have less to carry.

"Crap! I almost forgot!"

But I bumped into Griffin Stoneledge, a noble with gemstone magic with a huge sweet tooth.

"Watch where your going, commoner!" He spat.

I was about to apologize as it was my fault when he threw his milkshake at my face, smirking at me.

"Oops, my hand slipped."

Out of the corner, I saw the captain himself.

He was walking by us.

"Griffin," Captain Silva said sternly. "Why did you do that?"

Griffin almost looked as if he were about to piss his pants. "I...It was an accident."

"No, I mean why would you waste that sugary food on some commoner such as her?"

Griffin's expression changed and the two towered over me, malicious intents in their eyes.

I backed up, looking down. "I apologize."

"Clean your face. You look more repulsive. In this squad, I expect my members to look sharp and not like raggedy fools." The captain glared at me before going up the steps and motioning Griffin to follow.

I was left in the hallway, milkshake running down my face and getting on my clothes.

I cursed at them, wiping milkshake off my face.

Quickly changing out of my now soaked clothing, I hung them up in my bathroom and got my broom out of my closet, opening the door to the balcony and leaping down, rushing to the nearest mailplace.

"You should've come earlier," a guy said to me as he accepted the letter. "But I suppose you were busy."

"Sorry," I said. "Here, take this." I tried to give him coins, but he shook his head.

"Keep it, lass. I hear you're the first commoner in the Silver Eagles. Good for you!"

"Thank you-?"

He nodded and left, jumping into the sky and heading out to the direction to begin his route.

I walked around the capital, eying all the things with interest.

"Excuse me!"

I turned around and saw a girl a bit older than myself wearing the blue cape of the Blue Rose Knights. "Are you talking to me?"

"Yeah! Are you (y/n) Kyoska?"

"I am."

"Alright, great!" She handed me a bag of sweets. "My little brother Shino forgot to come by today. Can you give these to him? Tell him it's from Fiona."

"Fiona. Nice name."

"Right? Hey, you and I should go get dinner together. As a way of me appreciating your efforts to keep my baby brother in check."

I was about to speak when her teammates called her.

"Apologies, Kyoska! I'll see you around, okay?"

She didn't wait for my response, waving to me.

I was hanging my clothes back in my closet, frowning at the thought of those arrogant nobles who dared to throw food at me.

"Just what is so different about us?" I thought with distaste. "We're all human! Suffering the same crap."

I jumped onto my bed, staring up at my ceiling.

"Damn. I thought I would be able to change their pathetic minds, but I suppose not."

I then sat up, getting an idea.

"Maybe I can get at least one other ally other than Shino, Simon, Curtis, and the chefs."

I walked to the kitchens, ignoring all the taunts.

Instead, I smiled at them, looking directly at the nobles who glared at me.

Let the haters hate.

Bitches got no taste.

I entered the kitchens, deciding on making cookies for the squad and serving them for dessert.

When dinner was ready, I heard the chefs ring the bells that alerted the squad that the food was ready.

"It seems she's found her proper place," one said with a smirk. "In the kitchens, doing housework."

I glared at them and moved a chair over, knowing what happened last time I sat in Lady Acier's chair.

I really didn't want a repeat of that.

People looked to the captain who was staring at me.

"Kyoska, what are you doing?" He asked me.

I shrugged. "What does it look like? Do you need me to cut your braid off so you can see?"

"How rude-"

"I'm sitting down to eat dinner with my squad, what else does it look like?"

"I see." He began eating his dinner and the rest of us followed suit.

I felt people kicking me under the table, but I smiled and continued to eat, flipping them off under the table.

How childish are they?!

"So...I have a mission for you, Shino." Nozel handed Shino a piece of paper. "I see you and Kyoska are a team. That is fine."

Shino studied the piece of paper before handing it to me. "Cool! Our first mission together!"

I eyed it. "To reclaim an old relic. How boring."

"You think it's boring?" Captain glared. "Then perhaps you shall find organizing the books in the library more interesting."

"You wanna bet?" I smirked.

"When you're done with your mission, you are to sort all the files and books in the library. If you so much as make a single mistake, you're redoing it."

"How boring. Fine."

"You disrespectful little-"

"Ooh! Do you smell that?" I stood up, running to the kitchens as I saw everyone was about done with their dinner. "Be right back~"

I helped the chefs bring in the desserts.

People looked at the cookies I made.

Only my three friends began eating, happy to taste my cooking.

"So. Who made these?" Hashiro asked.

"I did," I said. "So eat up."

The captain picked up a cookie and eyed it before throwing it to the floor, crushing it with his foot. "How repulsive."

And that ended it.

The others began to destroy the cookies I had spent hours making.

I only smiled, determined to not lose my cool.

I just bowed as someone threw cookie crumbs at me, booing.

"I will see myself out, seeing you nobles are acting like animals. Good night."

But when I entered my room, I let out a gasp.

Written in chocolate sauce all along my wall were horrible words written by different people.

GO BACK TO THE BOONIES.

COMMONER.

COMMONER BITCH.

SLUT.

WHORE.

VULGAR.

REPULSIVE.

"What the fuck?!" I ran down to the kitchens and saw the culprits themselves smirking as they watched me go into the kitchens.

"Did you like our gift?" Nebra asked.

I ignored her, bringing cleaning supplies.

It was 2 am when I was done.

About three hours later at 5 am, I left with Shino.

The relic was easy to get and we gave it to Nozel who complimented Shino but glared daggers at me.

I walked out of his office, not wanting to create an argument.

I made my way to the library and when I was done, I went up to the captain to tell him I was finished.

"So quickly?" He didn't appear to believe me. "Let me see."

He followed me to the library, a frown on his face.

But when I opened the doors, everything was in tatters, books literally torn.

Ink spilled everywhere.

I clenched my fists. "Why...?"

"Miss Kyoska, this is in horrible condition. I expect you to pay back for all the damage. I will be taking huge pay cuts from your salary." Nozel glared at me. "This behaviour is unacceptable."

"But why me?!" I protested. "I didn't do anything?!"

I saw Dasha, a wind mage.

She was smirking at me as she entered the library, clinging to the captain who pushed her off. "Sorry, Kyoska. But Nozel said it. Maybe you shouldn't have destroyed the library."

"But look at her hands!" I said to the captain, grabbing Dasha's hand and showing him the ink. "She obviously did it!"

Dasha quickly slapped my face with her other hand, glaring at me. "Don't touch me, commoner filth! Nozel, she obviously did it! I wouldn't ever destroy property!"

The captain glared at both of us. "Lady Dasha. You call me Captain Silva. We are not on friendly terms to address each other by our first names without honorifics. As for you," Nozel glared daggers at me. "There were important files in this library. Some hand-written letters by my mother. I trust you will do your utmost to redeem yourself for this crime. You continue to dissappoint me."

He left, with Dasha clinging onto him.

"Get off me, Lady Dasha."

The doors closed behind them and I stared at the huge mess.

"Well, I suppose I should clean it out."

Luckilly, I had the help of one of the cleaning mages who glady assisted me.

I slumped my shoulders as I walked back to my room, just sitting down on my bed and watching the moon rise in the darkness.

Why?

Why are they so cruel?

I didn't even do anything.

There was a certain limit to what I could take, but for now?

Until I redeemed myself and paid back for all the shit Dasha ruined, I would be forced to say in this horrible squad.

I wiped a tear that trickled down my face, not knowing my door was open and the captain stopped briefly to talk to me, about to knock on the door's frame.

"I shouldn't have joined this squad," I sighed.

I heard a knock and turned my head to see the captain.

He had a frown on his face.

Shit...I hope he didn't hear me.

"Miss Kyoska, a letter arrived back from Hage." He handed it to me, his eyes holding clear hatred and disgust.

I noticed the red string once more, but I didn't want to do anything about it.

And of course fate wants us to be together.

So I'll crush fate itself. Fuck this nonsense.

I accepted the letter and turned around, hearing him walk off.

I opened it and saw a photo of Yuno's chubby cheeks as he was close to the camera with Asta jumping in the background and my mother waving along with the rest of my friends.

"Aww!" I squealed, my mood instantly lifted. "He's so adorable! I should really get back to him soon..."

And of course, the captain heard that.

I closed my door, seeing he was still in the hallway and just staring at the opposite wall.

I flipped the card over and saw my mother's handwriting.

______________________________

Dear (y/n),

We miss you so much here in Hage!

I heard you got into the Silver Eagles! Good for you!

We're enclosing some money from everyone, so go have a blast, okay? Don't forget us!

Yuno was crying again. He was wishing you were here, so that's that. Maybe you should stop by soon.

Much love,

Clarisse Kyoska

I held the letter dear to me, putting it on my desk beside my bed. "I'll come back soon...as soon as I'm able to."

I had serious doubts the captain would let me go home, especially after what happened today in the library.

I took off my witches hat and put it on the desk, a sigh leaving my mouth.

I just have to suffer a bit then get the hell out of this hell hole.
