Prologue
The moon illuminated the dark blue sky. It was a quiet and peaceful night. The night time was always full of life. Crickets chirped in the fields, and frogs croaked near ponds. The sound of a car driving past would come every now and then. Not many people are out at this time of night.
One of the best features of the night sky was all the stars. Clear nights like this one are perfect for stargazing. That's exactly what a father and his son were doing. They laid atop a hill, and pointed at constellations.
"Look! There's the little dipper!" the son said. He pointed to the well-known picture in the sky. The constellation loomed overhead, looking down at the earth.
The father smiled, "Right you are my boy," he said, "How did you find it?"
"I just kept looking around, and then I found it," the boy said.
The father nodded, "That's one way to look for it. But do you want to know an easier way to find the little dipper?"
The boy nodded.
The father leaned in closer, "Look for Polaris,"
The boy scrunched his face in confusion, "Polaris?" he asked, "What's Polaris?"
"The North Star. The brightest star in the sky. It's the first star to appear at night," the father explained.
"But how is that going to help me find the little dipper?" the boy asked.
"Polaris is one of the seven stars that makes up the little dipper. You find Polaris, and you'll always find the little dipper," the father said.
They stayed like that for a little longer. Then, something caught the boy's eye. He looked up at Polaris. It was indeed the brightest star of the night. But he could've sworn it was just a tad bit dimmer the last time he saw it. And that wasn't too long ago.
He kept staring at the star. The more he stared, the more he realized that Polaris was actually getting a lot brighter! Brighter than the moon!
"Dad, look!" he shouted as he shook his dad.
"What, what is it?" the father asked. He looked to where his son was pointing.
"Polaris, it's getting brighter!"
The dad squinted his eyes a little. His
eyesight wasn't how it used to be when he was younger. But the glowing star was very hard to miss. His eyes widened.
"My god. Quick, grab the camera! Take pictures! Hurry!" he yelled.
The boy scrambled to stand up, and took the camera in both hands. He aimed up at the sky, and shot away. Polaris was getting brighter by the second. It was almost blinding to look at now.
"This is extraordinary! Keep taking pictures!" the father yelled. He smiled unbelievably. He couldn't believe the miracle that was unfolding right in front of his eyes.
The boy kept taking pictures. Then he realized something weird about the glowing Polaris.
"Um, dad? Is it just me, or does Polaris seem to be coming closer?" he asked.
The father's smile started to fade a bit, "Y-Yes, that is a bit odd."
They kept staring at the shining and moving star. Until they both came to realize an unfortunate thing:
It was coming right towards them.
The father grabbed his son's hand, "Run! We're going to be crushed!"
They both ran down the hill, almost tripping on each other. There was now a thunderous rumbling sound that echoed throughout the night. They kept running until they heard a loud crash, and a surge of energy sent them flying into the fields. They landed not so softly on the ground. The boy cried in pain as he felt his left ankle twist underneath him. His dad wasn't too far behind him. He ran to his son.
"Hang on! I'm calling 911," he said. He fished his phone out of his pocket, and started dialing.
Back on the hilltop, the object that was coming towards them was definitely not a star. Instead, it was an oval shaped, metal pod. It looked sort of like a tomb.
There was a small click, and a hissing sound. The father looked up from the field, and saw the pod open up. His jaw dropped. So did his phone. It landed at his feet, with the dispatcher asking if he was okay. He couldn't form any words. What he saw was incredible.
A creature arose from the smoke. It had wings and black, wavy hair. Its piercing blue eyes met the father's light brown ones. He gasped as the creature rose up into the air, and disappeared out of sight.
"Oh my god," he breathed, "We're not alone after all."
