thirteen│angels and secrets

"Hey sis, is Colin around? That idiot isn't picking up his phone," Kyle's voice filled the car and everyone quieted their conversations down, listening.

"Nope, I met some friends at Starbucks and Colin let me hang out with them," I replied, not wanting to put the blame on Colin but didn't have a choice. Then, to smoothen it over, I added, "But I'm fine. How's your shift going?"

I could practically hear him sigh and rub his hand over his face from the other end of the line. "It's going fine, Aut. But seriously, Colin shouldn't leave you alone like that. He's going to have a big lecture waiting for him when I get home."

"I'm not alone, Kyle! I'm 18, practically an adult and I have my friends with me!" I whined.

"I know, I know Aut, I just care about you so much and you know an angel like you isn't always safe in this cruel world," I rolled my eyes, having received this talk several times.

"Okay okay Kyle, I'll stay safe," I reassured, "I need to go now."

"Okay fine, bye."

"Bye." Hanging up, I turned to face the back seat where the four squished participants were staring at me.

"Friends, huh?" I heard Ashton say and glared at him in return.

"Angel, huh?" Adrien chuckled, making my eyes narrow even further.

"Damn, who knew officer Kyle was actually a softie?" Brook commented from the driver's seat. "I don't think I've ever seen him smile whenever I come to bail Adrien out."

"Oh really? No way! Probably because he loves criminals!" The sarcasm in my voice was unmistakable. I looked out the window of the car to see a blur of trees and houses. "Where are we going?"

"The warehouse," Ashton answered. I nodded, as if I knew what he was talking about but I had no clue what 'the warehouse' was.

Finally, the car slid onto a grubble pathway, making the car bounce up and down on the rocks, before coming to a stop. Pushing the car door open, I got out, leaving way for everyone in the backseat to follow. I looked around to see a forest of trees and a path, leading into the forest. There was a post on the side with a holder for what looked like brochures, but other than that it was empty and silent. The sun was starting to set and the cool fall breeze took over, making me shiver. As everyone jumped out of the car, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Preston look at Adrien and nod.

"Until your part of the gang, we need to keep the location of the warehouse secret," Adrien informed me, noticing that my eyes had traveled over to their tiny exchange. I decided to ignore the part where he said 'until', as if he expected me to change my decision. I squinted my eyes, confused on why they were taking me there if they wanted me to keep it a secret. Adrien walked up to me with a final sigh, and placed his hands so they were covering my eyes. I tried opening my eyes to see if I could see through the cracks but only saw plain black darkness. "Just walk and I'll guide you," I heard him instruct.

It was easier said than done though as I kept stumbling over bits of rock and not trusting my sense to keep walking. I knew we had reached a clearing when I saw the darkness brighten, from Adrien's hands. The canopy of trees above us were what kept us shade before, something I noticed on the silent short walk.

Adrien lifted his hands from my eyes and revealed a blurry looking one story building. It wasn't necessarily a house, but it had a door and a maroon brick roof over the top. There was a plant in a tiny pot near the door but other than that, nothing besides a path. I rubbed my eyes to make my vision clearer before I followed everyone inside.

The inside of the building didn't look much more homey either. There was a plain hallway, painted with gray walls and a rectangular red mat that stretched to the end of the hallway. On one corner, there was a black umbrella stand. The next room was when we turned the corner of the hallway. It was painted a light tan color and had two gray cloth couches on the two corners of the room, near the right. Towards the left side of the room, there was a tiny kitchen and a kitchen island right in front of it. There was a picture framed of everyone in the gang, hanging right above one of the couches which gave me the feeling that this was the room they hung out in most often.
