Xavier's Birthday

Athena woke up the next morning, happy at the thought of Xavier's birthday, but still slightly nervous about something, but she didn't know what. Had it something to do with the omen and the beginning of the voyage?

She got dressed and combed out her hair, then took the two Pokéballs down to the third-class reception room. For once she got there before Xavier did. She sat, eagerly waiting, where she usually sat. Xavier arrived moments later, dressed in the same clothes he wore on the day the two met. They were clearly his best clothes.

"Happy birthday, Xavier!" Athena exclaimed, giving her friend a welcoming hug. He hugged her back and replied, "Thanks!" The two let go of each other, and took their seats. Athena told him, "I got you a present." She quickly reached into her bag and grabbed the Great Ball. Xavier's eyes widened as he saw it, and they grew even larger when she handed it to him.

"Go on, see what's inside!"

Xavier released the Pokémon out of the ball and almost screamed with delight. There, on the floor in front of him, was the Litleo, looking happy to meet her new trainer.

The Litleo leaped up into Xavier's lap and curled up, starting to doze off. Xavier gently stroked her fur as he said, "Oh my Arceus, Athena! You didn't have to go through such trouble-" Athena cut him off. "It was no trouble whatsoever! I'm happy to get you a Pokémon." Xavier continued, "Thank you so much."

"Are you going to give her a name?" Athena asked eagerly. Xavier then pondered in thought for a moment, then said aloud, "Amber." "Wow, that's such a nice name!" Athena whisper-exclaimed, allowing Amber to sleep peacefully.

They let their Pokémon play with one another, hanging out for a few hours. Athena was now beginning to get this feeling inside her-she didn't know what, but it was a good one, and towards Xavier.

When it started to near evening, Athena pointed out how Xavier would need to go eat soon if he didn't want to be hungry all night. Third-class passengers had to eat at a certain time, or they didn't get anything until the next mealtime.

Xavier looked at Athena with thoughtful yet worried eyes, and told her quickly, "Come with me, please. I don't want this to end." Athena had butterflies in her stomach all of a sudden, and agreed quickly. They went to the large third-class dining room, and had a pleasant meal.

The two friends finally said goodbye to one another and headed back to their rooms, but then Athena stopped for a second, remembering the worried look in Xavier's eyes.

"Xavier, wait..." she said aloud. She turned at the same time as Xavier did, stepped forward some paces, then asked, "There's something on your mind. Tell me what it is." The same look returned to Xavier's eyes as he suddenly said, "The Pokétanic is doomed... Nobody should have ever gotten on board this ship."

"Xavier... what do you mean?" Athena asked worriedly. Xavier replied grimly, "You saw the omen at the start of the voyage, right? With the Hoennian?" Then the omen returned completely to Athena's mind. She nodded reluctantly.

"I have a feeling something bad should happen, and soon. They say this ship is unsinkable, but that could just be a lie. What if this ship sinks?" Xavier predicted. "I've read a book from about a dozen years ago. It's about this ship called the Pokétan that's supposed to be unsinkable but sinks anyway... how can nobody see that's another sign?"

Athena had heard of this book before. She was now positive something would happen. Xavier continued, "It will probably sink tonight. I can just feel it..." Xavier let his head fall forward and he turned away. "I might not make it. They always hold the third-class passengers back until last, like always in a situation like this one. They also always hold men back, no matter their class. I'm just as well an adult now."

Athena realized he was right, as much as she wanted to believe he was fibbing. She could get off this ship fine, but Xavier wouldn't have such good luck, she thought sadly.

"We have to think of something to make sure you'll be alright," she said determinedly. "You can try staying up all night, and if you feel something happens, you can race up to boat deck before they lock the gates. I'll be able to make it to the boats easily."

"I'll try that," Xavier said with no tone in his voice. "But if I don't make it, I want you to take Amber." He grabbed the Great Ball with Amber inside, and handed it to Athena. She nodded sadly and took the ball, putting it carefully in her bag. Axe looked from her shoulder into the bag, confused.

"There's something else, also," Xavier began to conclude. "Athena, these last few days have been amazing. I don't know how I lived without you. I don't want to have to say goodbye... but now I do. Athena..." Xavier trailed off, and Athena opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Xavier's mouth was opened still the same way. They looked into each other's eyes, and slowly began to lean in towards each other. Their lips slowly attached to each other's, and they kissed.

After some seconds, they slowly retracted from each other. Then they said at the same time, "I love you..."
