Chapter 9: Grave*

I sat in front of the small grave where Xavier buried my Pokémon by the pond right near where we first fell from the hill. He placed a large rock with an engraving on it that said "in loving memory, Dedenne" I couldn't help but tear up when seeing it, but I knew it was time to move on.

"I won't let a single thing ever happen to another Pokémon" I said out loud.

"You can't make that promise, Yannie" Xavier said, walking up to me with a few flowers in hand. "Something always happens to someone. That's part of life."

"Tell me about it..." I sighed and took his flowers to place on the grave and took his hand to stand "Is it time to head out now?" He nodded.

"Yeah. We have to find a few kids around our age who will be traveling with us. A group who have certain skills will come in handy."

"So, you're saying you'll be the only hunter?" He took out his certificate and looked at it to admire it since he got it in the mail.

"Probably. I never met them, but who we get is who we get" we headed off after saying goodbye to Dedenne and headed to the next city or town. "There's a special academy that finds talented students to teach them the arts of vampirism and crafting and sets up groups to go on adventures for certain tasks. I haven't told the professor about my own goal."

"What will you do if he denies it?"

"He'll take away my group" he smiled big "I'm sure I'll get through a lot without them either way. I'll just keep things to myself until the group finds out what I'm planning and report to the professor."

"I see..." I looked around at the beautiful scenery and smiled. I don't even have words. It's so much more than what I see on tv! I don't want to take my eyes off it... "You're so full of yourself just because you're a vampire repellent." I continued.

"That's the best kind of defense."

"But you're not immune to death" I stopped walking and closed my eyes. He stopped to look at me "Never underestimate a vampire's power. It always depends on the power the council holds. Not every member is the same. Try not to be reckless."

"I see where you're going with this" I looked back at him, holding out his hand. I took it and followed him to the next town while I kept my eyes everywhere. It might be dangerous to walk without looking where I'm going, but I have Xavier, who's good with his eyes and sword. I shouldn't have any worries if it comes to regular vampires.

"Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad I brought you along. How do you feel about being out here?" I jumped in excitement.

"It's the best! I'm so happy to see it all! I wish Dedenne can see it with me though" I sighed "I would have come out here with my mom months later, but I'm not sure if it'll be the same"

"Why?" I rather not say "What's your mom like?"

"Oh! She's the best! She's the most perfect person I know, and she loves people and Pokémon! People may love her because she's a celebrity, but she sure wish her Pokémon can love her back."

"Your mom's a celebrity!? No way! Who?" I shhed him to keep quiet.

"I don't want you seeing less of her if you find out, so I'm not telling" I crossed my arms and looked away with a pout.

"Oh, come on! I complimented your mom. How can I think less of her?" I'm not going to say a thing, "but I get it. No problem." he smiled "I'm just glad you at least had someone that makes you happy back in that home of yours. How come-"

"I rather not talk about my old life, mainly because it's too depressing" I sighed, "I think she's the only full vampire that's truly sweet, but what do I know?" He nodded "I'm really excited about this adventure! Thank you for taking me with you! I hope nothing bad happens."

"There might, but we can get through it."

"Hey, X!" Someone yelled from afar before we left Vaniville Town. A tall, strong man with a large beard came running with a long edge sword on his back. I slowly hid behind Xavier when he approached, "There you are! I've been looking for you! You're just going to leave without saying goodbye?"

"Sorry, Dean. I'm meeting a group in town from the academy, and I'm running a bit late if someone didn't take her time to get dressed." he glanced at me. I sweatdropped, talking about me taking forever to put on my contacts. Give me a break. I never wore or thought of wearing any before.

I just stayed behind him and didn't speak, not feeling comfortable about meeting a stranger who was also a hunter who could snap at me if he finds out what I am.

"Oh, I didn't know you have a girlfriend! Look at you! You graduated from your training and even got yourself a girlfriend! I'm proud of you!" Xavier laughed nervously, peaking at me, minding my own business and pretending like I wasn't listening even if I was blushing at the moment.

"S-She's just a friend. Remember, I had to leave my night shift early to help her?" The Dean guy looked at me.

"Oh! So it was this girl? I didn't realize it without all the dirt covering her" he offered his hand to me "I'm glad you made it in one piece. I'm Dean, a professional vampire hunter. I protect this town like it's my own child" I hid deeper behind Xavier, feeling nervous about being looked at "oh? What's wrong?"

"She's just shy. Don't worry about her. She's going to join me on my adventure with the group."

"She is? What's she certified with?" Xavier rubbed the back of his head.

"W-Well... I don't think she's certified-"

"Then I don't think that's the safest thing to do. You might want to stay together so you can keep being together, but it's better if she stays where it's safe."

"Don't worry! I'll protect her!" Dean shook his head.

"Oh, X. Always the overconfident one." I giggled a little "That's not the point. She could slow you down if she's not certified in anything. Sure, a group may make it safer, but it's better if she doesn't stand out and run behind everyone."

"She knows a lot about vampires!" Xavier fought for his right to keep me with him "More than even you know about them! She's perfect" I blushed even more and peaked over at Dean, thinking it over.

"Knows a lot more than me? I find that hard to believe. Okay, I'll test her then!"

"H-huh..?" Xavier started sweating. I jumped and screamed when Dean leaned close to my face to question me. I had to close my eyes when he asked the first question.

"#1!" He shouted. I hid behind Xavier again "Which blood type is most favored by a vampire?"

"What? Why is that necessary?" Xavier asked.

"Be quiet! You said she knows more than I do, so I'm asking-!"

"RH null is the rarest blood type known now and is the most difficult for vampires to get a hand of mainly because these people with this golden blood are hidden from the public and highly protected. Those vampires who got 'lucky' to get a taste claim it to be the best out of any time. Since it's the rarest in the list, AB- comes in second place followed by O- in third place" I looked away "the rarer, the stronger the taste, I guess" I shrugged, learning this information from my tutors.

"I don't know about that last part. X here has a rare blood type that smells like trash. It's the best to repel those monsters" Xavier rolled his eyes as Dean laughed "I'm sure that's why he has a big ego!" Sounds about right, "By the way, did something die out here? I feel like I smell your blood close by. Did you not cover it when you hurt yourself the other night?" Xavier watched me hurry off, hiding my bag.

He finished talking to his friend and caught up to me, "hey," he got too close, making me feel more nervous than I already was "He's right... Is that my blood?" I sweatdropped, hugging my bag in secret, "My blood has a specific smell to it, and it's really strong. I know its scent... My mom often gets mad when I scrape my knee, so I know my scent when I smell it. What do you have in your bag?" I turned away.

"N-nothing..." he took away my bag without giving me the chance to fight back, and I watched him take out the shirt he used to clean his blood. I cupped my face, embarrassed.

"Huh? Why do you-?" He slowly smirked "Hey, if you like the smell of my blood so much, you could have just told me."

"S-Shut up!" I huffed and snatched my bag away to continue walking. I stopped when hearing him big a hole with his foot and started burying it. Uh... that's probably for the best. I don't think I want people staring at me for having a smelly bag, although I smell nothing that has a bad scent, in my opinion.

Xavier came back to my side and took my hand to place on his arm to help me walk. "Don't be too shy to ask for a sample at least. Look at you. You could barely walk on your own. You need some strength that human food can't offer you."

"We'll see" I sighed, not knowing if I'll be able to resist next time. My body is pretty much frail and can't really stand on its own for too long. He may be right about needing the blood for energy, and if I do drink it, I may not slow him down like I'm expecting too... But... "If that's the case... if I only crave your blood, that would mean your rare type is all I can take. I've experienced the smell of every type, and I rejected them all but yours."

"Looks like we are soulmates" he smiled widely, making it seem like it's true, but thinking that it makes me feel odd. I barely know him... but I can't compare myself to the vampire children who married as young as ten and continue to grow together without complications.

Human mating and vampire mating are entirely different. In vampires, you're set to spend the rest of your life together with your soulmate because of instincts, but humans don't require that kind of instinct and go by how someone looks or acts to determine if they're the one for them... I'm not sure how to define Xavier and me.

"You really think that?" I asked as we entered an amazing looking town surrounded in bricks and a farmers market "wow! It looks better than it did on tv! You said this was Aquacorde Town, right?"

"Yeah" he nodded while checking his phone and pressed it against his ear "You think this is amazing. Wait until you see Lumiose City- Yeah, Hello?" He spoke before answering his phone "Yeah, we're here in Aquacorde... Yeah, I have a friend with me joining along. I hope that's okay... I'll tell him when we get to the lab... I'm sure it'll be fine. She's great" he smirked at me "Alright, I'll meet you there. Are you close?... oh, okay. See yah then" he hung up and smirked at me again.

"Are you sure it's really okay for me to come..?" He wrapped his arm around me and brought me close. I gulped when smelling his blood slightly.

"I told you it's okay! You're smart, and I trust you."

"Even so, these people might not accept me because I'm slow and weak."

"Well, who refused to take my blood in the first place?" I rolled my eyes.

"You are the only blood type I crave. It's such a coincidence we ran into each other." he chuckled at my blush.

"I know! I've thought that the whole time!" He took my hand "come on, let's go. We're meeting at a café" he took me to an outside table by a small restaurant and pulled a chair for me. I know I may be a princess, but I was never treated like one... It kind of feels nice.

"Thank you." I smiled and sat down with him beside me. I looked around and admired the architecture, the people walking about, and even the Pokémon! "There are so many Pokémon... Can you help me catch one?" I asked him. He took out a Pokémon from his Pokéball; a Froakie!

"Oh! How cute!" I gasped. Froakie looked at me and tilted its head while I grabbed its sides to pick it up and cuddle with it, "Hi! I'm Yannie!" Froakie smiled a little and let me cuddle with its soft cheeks.

"Like it? I received it in the mail this morning. The professor often gives out Pokémon to help them with their journey, so my choice was Froakie."

"Awe! I wish I got to pick!"

"Don't worry. I'll help you catch one when we start traveling."

"You mean it? Do I get to choose, or is it randomized?"

"Wow, you never have been out in the world, have you?" I shook my head "Well, there are certain Pokémon living in certain places. If you want a specific Pokémon, you'll have to travel to that area or obtain it. There's a lot more to catching a Pokémon than just choosing. You have to battle them to weaken them, and that'll make the capture must faster."

"Right! I learned about that on TV, but I guess I forgot." I looked around, "When do you think these guys will show up?"

"Not sure, but let's be patient." I nodded.

"I hope they don't try to chase me out" he pet my head.

"Don't worry, if they do, they'll have to chase me out as well."

"You're really dedicated to having me stay, huh?"

"Having you in this journey was my choice. I'm not letting them push you away when I want you the most" I blushed and looked down "T-That came out wrong..."

"Y-Yeah..." I looked at Froakie looking like he was falling asleep in my arms, "Is a group really a top priority to have? If they decide to leave after you refuse to let me go anywhere, what would happen?"

"We'll just be on our own. People would usually find that a bit odd, for a vampire hunter to travel alone or not in a big group. They'll start questioning you all serious and may take away my license until I can get myself a safe group" I slowly nodded, hoping that won't happen because of me "A vampire can just go crazy and attack for no reason. It may be for a reason we won't know because once they do try to attack, they're dead."

"I see..." he leaned on the table.

"Anything else you can provide about vampires attacking?" I took a moment to think.

"Well, the whole idea of battling for who gets to live is a bit of a stretch, but it's the most peaceful thing compared to random attacks. Vampires are fast, but they're stupid when angered while humans are slow, but cunning and are smart to know how to deal with things depending on the speed. If a vampire loses in battle, they'll get angry and attack. Humans need a plan B to live, or else, both of them dies."

"Give me some more information"

"It's not always the case, though. It happens rarely. The anger a vampire holds fogs their mind, and they start attacking wildly and aggressively without using their heads. After they kill a human in that state, they kill themselves, so they don't have to go through the shame of losing. It's pretty much about insecurities... even vampires get insecure" I looked down, "They don't want to feel embarrassed about their lack of strength. There are bad ways to win and good ways to lose. What's interesting and troubling is that it's not always clear which, is which. A flipped coin doesn't always land heads or tails. Sometimes it may never land at all..." I smiled

"That's sounds like a cool saying" Xavier said, leaning on his elbow and smiling at me. I smiled happily and nodded "where did you hear that from?"

"My father's best friend. Dad left his personal journal before he died, and it told a lot of his times during his youth. He left it to my mom. My mom... gave it to me for my birthday" I bit my lips, trying not to think about that day or let it get to me.

"Your birthday? When is it?" He shook my arm, noticing my face getting red, "What's wrong?"

"On my birthday... that's when they decided to let me leave my room. Right when I thought it would've been a good day for once, the friend I made that day died, and I tried saving Dedenne..."

"I found you on your birthday?" He shook his head "No, I found you at 1 in the morning before the sun was getting up..." I nodded "This all happened the day prior" one in the morning... I could have sworn I left at midnight. Was I really running for an hour..?

"Yeah..." I took out dad's journal and opened it "Dad talked about his days before vampires ruled. Oh, how beautiful it was" Xavier held my knee, making me look at his serious and caring eyes.

"We'll make it beautiful again" I nodded and started sniffing the air, smelling something dangerous. I detected a vampire nearby... "What is it?" Xavier asked.

I looked over and watched a waitress with a cute pink maids uniform with a poofy skirt and wore feline ears, coming over to us with a notepad.

I tensed up my body when she approached. She may have looked like a regular person with her tanned skin and strange light natural green color, but her scent had begged to differ. She wasn't what her appearance was expressing, yet she made it work so well that even if I didn't have a keen sense of smell, I wouldn't have guessed she was a full-fledge vampire...

Can y'all guess who made that quote??
