Chapter 6: Half*

I woke up a few hours later to remove the bandage off my head after feeling the injury had, vanished. It must've been my body telling me I lacked the nutrition I needed to heal properly. I knew three days sounded a bit odd for me to still have an injury, so the delicious food really helped.

I yawned and sat up, looking around the room. Again, everything wasn't a dream... They're really gone.

I looked down at myself, knowing I was sad it happened, but knew I shouldn't think about it for too long. I'm never going back to the castle. I'll just set off to search for my mom on my own... For the moment, I wondered where that boy was.

Right when I thought of him, he came up the stairs and noticed me sitting up without my bandage. He walked over to feel on my forehead, making me flinch a bit from his reach.

"You're fever disappeared like it never happened" he touched the top of my head. "Your bump did too. That's weird" he snorted and walked off. "Vampires have it easy, don't they?" He looked at me "They heal immediately after an injury" I peeked through the window to avoid him staring at me.

"The nutrition my body lacked prevented me from healing quicker. I feel a lot better, and not because I'm a vampire" I looked back at him leaning on the wall with his arms crossed "The food you gave me was very delicious... Did I get the chance to thank you before I passed out?" He looked at my eyes a bit longer before sighing.

"Don't worry about it. I'm glad you enjoyed it" he tapped his arms with his fingers repeatedly, like he wanted to get something off his chest. "Would you have preferred blood instead?" I made a face and leaned back to lay on the headboard.

"Keep your blood to yourself. I throw up just by smelling it" he tilted his head confused. "I can't tell you how many times human blood was offered to me, and I turned them down. I refused to take it and wait for actual food to show up. Needless to say, I rather die than take someone's blood" he blinked a few times before coming to sit on the edge of the bed. I could see his blade on the side of his leg, so I knew he was still cautious, not that I could hurt anyone.

"So... You're a vampire that doesn't drink blood. I never heard of that before" I stared at his curious eyes.

"Am I making the confirmation of what I am difficult?" he furrowed his brows "You take it as you like, but I don't think it matters what I am. I'll never hurt someone. There's no reason... Everyone has a reason to live, and it's not fair for that life to be cut short" I looked at my hands. "Even if a human girl died right in front of me... I cried. I couldn't protect her."

"Hm? What do you mean?" I bit my lips.

"She..." I was shaking, haunted at the memory. I shook my head, saying too much "I...I better get going now. I'll just take my things and go look for Dedenne on my own. You've done enough for me" When I reached out to grab my things, the boy suddenly climbed on me and looked down at my surprised face. W-What is he doing..?

"You think I'm going to let you go after what you just said? You're not going anywhere until I figure out what the hell you are" I frowned "You're giving mix signals now. You don't act like a vampire at all. One does not simply refuse human blood or cry about their Pokémon. They're heartless and don't think of anyone but themselves" he tried his best to learn more by looking at the color of my eyes. "Vampires have red eyes... Yours aren't red... but they're not human either. What are you?"

"What do you think I am?" He started building a sweat "I care about people, I hate blood, I love Pokémon, and I prefer food than anything else. But I also heal quickly and..." I tilted my head a bit, "What else makes me seem like a vampire?" He backed away and stood beside me.

"You're..." his heart raced a bit, and his cheeks reddened before he turned away "So..." he looked at me. I sighed and sat up again, knowing if I don't explain myself, he's not going to let me go. Either if I do or not, he might lock me down until he gets a better understanding of why I exist.

"It's pretty scary to talk to someone who has a dagger on his leg" I said. He looked down at himself "What will you get once you get your answer? What will happen to me?"

"I don't know... Once I get the answer, I might figure it out" he ran his fingers in his long hair. "Maybe..." I nodded, sort of getting it.

"Well, it may seem a bit odd to talk to someone who I don't know the name of, and also considering climbing on me without knowing my name" I stated. He smirked a bit.

"Even if I did know your name, I'd probably still do it" he chuckled. "I didn't mean anything perverted when I did that. You just have the strangest eyes I've ever seen" I looked down, feeling insecure "I'm Xavier, but you can call me X if you want. People I know usually call me that" I felt a bit of heat when seeing his smile, and nodded.

"I'm Yannie" he sat back on the bed.

"That's a unique name. What does it mean?" I smiled, remembering Layla said the same thing.

"Can't really say. My dad named me before he died"

"Vampires have an interesting sense of style in names, of course" he said to himself.

"Oh no, he wasn't a vampire" he looked at me surprised "He was human" he froze, and his face went pale.

"So... Your mom is human too?" I stared at him, knowing he might put two and two together, watching him slowly getting it and slowly get up.

"I never planned on telling anyone what I am so freely, but knowing my life was in your hands" I glanced at his blade "and that I don't have the strength to get past you, I'm sure you're not going to let me go anywhere until you understand."

"U-Uh..." he gulped, not knowing what to say "I see..." I removed the cover to get up from bed, but my legs couldn't carry me. I fell on the wooden floor and looked at my legs.

"What was that..?" It must've been from all that running I did the other day since I'm not used to using my legs so hard and fast. I've also been laying in this bed for days already.

I looked up at Xavier standing there still with that pale look on his face. I looked down and bowed down "Please... I don't care what you do with me. I wish to die soon after I see Dedenne..." I would love to see my mother after all these years, but there's no telling how long it'll take to find her.

"Are you asking me to kill you?"

"Was I not clear earlier when you pointed that blade at my face?" His heart was beating extremely fast for some reason. I looked up to see him looking away with a bright red face, looking a bit uncomfortable. It may be the first time I've seen him look away from me for so long since being here.

"Right..." he cleared his throat and looked back at me, still on the floor. "Uh... It would be murder if I decide to kill a human, so I won't do that."

"It'll also be murder if you kill a vampire, wouldn't it?" He ran his hand through his hair again.

"Yeah, but it's not illegal to kill a vampire, at least in my community" I felt like he was confusing himself "You... You're human, right?" I nodded, "but... also a... vampire?"

"That would be correct" He looked like he was about to explode. I covered my face with my hair, looked at him through the strands, and gulped nervously, not wanting to know what he may do to me. I'd prefer him to kill me instead of turning me in or something...

"Okay..." was all he said. He must not know how to put his words together, so I decided to make a conversation until he felt better.

"What were you doing so early in the morning when you found me? I know I was running very early before the sun came up, so why were you out when you should have been asleep?" He sat down on his desk to think to himself before finally responding.

"If you go outside right now, you'll see many people running their regular errands, and around those people are Vampire Hunters who guards the town. They take different shifts in different parts of the town, so I happened to find you while on the job" my eyes widened.

"You're a Hunter?" He nodded without hesitation. How crazy to know that I ended up in the hands of a hunter while being a princess of vampires! "I see... No wonder you hardly looked scared of me. You pointed that blade at me like nothing" he leaned on the desk and took out a book from the shelf above it and opened it to read through.

"Well, I'm not a full-fledge hunter yet. When I get my certification, I'll be able to travel and hunt vampires all I can. Some hunters may not be as afraid as other humans, but what made me a bit surprised was the color of your eyes. I almost mistook them for a red color, and I got a bit freaked out, but that's when I noticed they weren't red, almost brown" he looked back at me getting up to sit on the bed and take Dad's journal "You're a half-breed..."

"Yes, I am" he frowned as I stared at the journal "I want to say you're the first real person who's seen my eyes in a long time, but I would be lying" I hugged the book, trying to fight back tears.

"Real person?" My family and Layla has seen my eyes, and also, I don't consider the Messengers real people since they are heartless dolls.

"Yes" he scanned his book for a moment.

"I... never heard of such a thing" he closed it and looked into his laptop. "I have the Hunters browser to learn much about vampires, and I never heard about half-breeds. I heard back in the day that experiments were done, but either breed can't give birth to a half breed" I snorted, knowing those people weren't pureblooded royalty.

"You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet" he looked at me "How could hunters get the full true information about vampires anyway?"

"We don't have much. This browser only has a few pages of information they collected. We don't want to memorize them too much since they may be false, but our training requires fighting and guarding. We either protect our people or fight in the war."

"The war?"

"It's a term we use that means we fight until we can decrease the population of the enemy's race" I looked down, remembering that was a part of my studies. I was taught many things about my people and was made sure I understood everything that was going on between humans and vampires, which means the history, the war, the Elite Four, the hunters, the games, and the leaders.

"I get it" he got up to sit next to me again.

"It's a hunter's job to protect the public and inform them of many things as possible that might not frighten them. It may be okay to talk about this with a human, but not a vampire... and you're both. I'm not sure how to feel about telling you this."

"Vampires are ruthless monsters... My home prevented me from ever leaving their walls so no one could find out about me. I'll be a disgrace to both races, but is it so bad..? Do you really think I'm as bad as a vampire that you can't tell me these things..?" I teared up a bit "I don't want to be labeled a monster... I love people. They're so creative and have the hearts to care about others. I'm not as bad as they are... I don't know what I am. I've never got the chance to grow up to be someone... but I know one thing for sure, I just want to live and see the world" I looked into his focused eyes.

"I have nowhere to go... I ran away from that place to save Dedenne... They were the ones that killed him!" I cupped my eyes "I ran to find a Pokémon center, but I slipped and rolled down a hill. That's how you found me..."

"So you ran away from home? Not only to save Dedenne but save yourself?" I... I guess he can say that "That's pretty impressive" I looked at him confused "You were locked to be kept from being found out, but even if you aren't strong enough to fight those who kept you in, you ran to save your friend. That's pretty admirable" h-he gets it... "On the browser, it states that vampires don't have the heart to care about Pokémon. Is that true?"

"Yes, it very much so is. They see them as tools" he nodded.

"Then, your caring side came from your human heart. You are more human than vampire, but you're still a half-breed. What did you develop on your vampire side?"

"I don't think I've gained a thing" I scratched my head, not really knowing. He nodded, looking satisfied, and stood up.

"Well, that's good to hear then."

"Wait... So you actually believe me on everything I told you?"

"Well, from what you confirmed from the browser, you are humane enough to care about a Pokémon, so you're not a threat."

"I could have lied and said that that page was false" he chuckled.

"Oh no, I know when someone is lying to me" he winked. "I know a liar when I hear one" I pouted and teared up again, making him rub the back of his head "Gee... You cry a lot, don't you?" I wiped my tears away.

"Well, when you live a life like mine, you'd understand..." he smiled and petted my head. I haven't felt someone do this to me in a very long time... It feels so warm.

"Don't worry, you're safe now" I nodded and sensed something coming towards the house.

"Someone is coming..." Xavier looked through the window sneakily and leaned back.

"That's my mom coming back from her shift" so his mom's a hunter too? "Which means my night shift will probably start soon" he looked at me "will you be alright on your own?"

"You trust me to stay here with your mom..?"

"She knows you've been sleeping here, so I don't think she minds. Of course, I don't have to worry about your little self attacking her. She's been in the business longer than I have and will instantly kill you if you decide to snap" I snorted.

"I don't desire human blood, so you don't have to worry about that. I'm just afraid she'll attack me if she sees my eyes" he pet my head again.

"Just hide like you usually do. My shift doesn't start for another hour, so I won't leave without explaining to her-"

"No! Please!" I begged, "don't tell anyone!" The front door opened downstairs.

"X!" His mom called "I'm home!" Xavier just stared at my nervous expression.

"The fewer people that know, the better... You happen to see me by mistake, so I don't want you telling anyone about me!" I clenched my fist "If you so desire... Kill me before I get the chance to experience another kind of hell" he stared at me straight in the eyes before nodding and headed to the exit.

"Well, when you put it that way, how can I?" He stopped and held his chin to think "Say, just out of curiosity, how much information do you know about vampires?" I stood up and played with my finger

"A ton" I admit. He smiled gladly.

"That's good to hear" I tilted my head to the side "Stay in this room. I'll be back with some food before I have to leave for the night" I watched him walk out. I stood there a bit confused, but let it go and headed back to bed right before I froze when hearing another voice.

"Oh! You're awake!" That's Xavier's moms' voice! I bit my lips and just stared at the bed, not wanting her to look at my eyes "You've been asleep for a long time. I'm sure you've been wanting a shower, haven't you?" a shower sounds nice right now "I hope you don't mind that I was the one that changed you. I have your clothes all cleaned for you, but I think it'll be better to wear something more comfortable. When you like, you go ahead to the bathroom to shower, and I'll put a clean towel with some warm clothes in there. How does that sound?" She sounds so nice... It must be nice to have a mom by your side at home all the time.

Since I didn't want her seeing my eyes, I carefully kept my head down to bow to her "I appreciate you letting me stay in your home. You're a wonderful person" I can feel her heart jump, maybe in the form of a blush?

"You're so sweet! It's my pleasure! X was the one that found you, so I just accepted you and made sure you were clean while my son was out at night. Feel free to stay as long as you like" I slowly nodded.

"I'll repay my visit"

"Don't worry about it. It's the job of a hunter to take care of someone in need. I'm getting some food ready, so go on with a shower" I looked and watched her leave through the strands of my hair. I stood up straight and put my hands together.

"It must be nice having a mom..." I sighed to myself and kept my hair in front of my face to stay hidden while looking for a shower.
