Chapter 23

The Unforeseeable Trigger

-Bree-

I turned the knob to my dorm room and yawned. I was super tired from the boat trip back. I pulled the door open and was greeted by my roommate. She ran up and hugged me. She contributed to my huge list of congratulations and compliments received that day.

She walked to the open door frame. "Don't forget you have a party to attend to tonight. You and Preston are special guests."

"Thanks," I said, "I'm gonna take a quick nap."

"See ya later!"

Abbie shut the door and peace entered the room. I feel backwards on my bed and closed my eyes for maybe five minutes when I heard tapping on the window. I got up from my bed to see what was happening. I saw Preston outside throwing pebbles at the window which would explain the tapping.

I gave him a What the Heck!? Look. He motioned for me to lift up the window. I did and folded my arms and leaned on the window sill.

"Come with me," he whispered,"Ryker needs us."

He didn't need an answer from me. I bolted right out of the dorms and meet him outside. He lead me to the fence line that lead into the forest. We climbed the fence and went deeper into the wooded area.

"Just a little further." He said.

"What is this about?" I asked.

"Ryker will need to answer that. Even I don't know."

Suddenly, I heard a twig or something snap behind us. I spun around quickly. Someone must've followed us! I saw nothing. I heard rustling in the bushes. Now I was paranoid and was doing 360 turns around us. Looking for whatever was following us.

"It's nothing." Preston said after a while of me frantically searching.

We continued into the dark forest in silence until Preston spoke up.

"Have you ever noticed the Mr. Curt was never around during our battles at the tournament? Either that or he was on the phone."

"Yeah, he's been a little on edge and acting strange." I answered.

"Oh, here it is."

I was about to ask him what but I saw what he meant. An old two story building stood in front of us. The color used to be orange but was now ugly and faded. Windows were broken and shingles and pieces of the building were falling apart.

At the rotting double doors was Jase and Professor Ryker. Ryker was holding an old looking sack.

"Glad you could make it." Ryker said.

He pushed open the doors and years worth of dust clouded my vision and caused my to cough intensely.

The inside was much like the outside. Sad and falling apart. There were piles of lose wood planks and crates.

"Why are we here? And what's with the sack?" I questioned.

Ryker opened the drawstrings to the sack and a bright blue glow lit up the dim room. The orbs!

"I've decided to hide them here. No one comes here. Most don't know about it. The school used it for storage and most forgot about it."

"Pick a better hiding spot next time." A familiar voice rang out.

The young man with black hair and bright green eyes. Zero.

"Hand them over and I'll let you live." He threatened. He talked as if he had everything under control. As if this was supposed to happen, like everything is falling into play.

"You must've been the one following us." I accused him.

"Wasn't me. I just arrived." He made a smile that made me shiver. It was a cold, evil smile.

"Then who was following us." Preston pondered for a moment.

"It was me, Preston. It was me." A new voice entered the conversation.

I turned to see the man who was following us. No it couldn't be. Not him. The phone calls, being absent, when I saw him in the alley. It was Mr. Curt! It was him all along!

"Mr. Curt why are with them?" Jase questioned. He was surprised like all of us.

"Just call me Curt now. I'm not a teacher. Never was. Zero, can we go through with our plan now?"

"Eager are we now?" Zero asked. Curt stared at him. "Fine go ahead."

Curt pulled out a walkie-talkie and spoke into it. "Wake the Ursaring."

Zero through a Pokeball and out came his Houndoom. Curt sent out his Nidoking.

I stepped in front of the others. Preston followed suit. We would be the ones to fight them. I grabbed Vulpix's Pokeball and threw it in the air. The ball snapped open Vulpix leaped out. She was ready to take these punks down.

Preston sent out his Blaziken. Blaziken was his strongest and it was faster than Laireon.

"Nidoking, Horn Attack!" Curt ordered.

Nidoking charged at Vulpix with his head lowered and the horn aimed at my partner.

"Dodge!" I called out to my Fire-Type. She was much faster then the bulky Poison-Type. She quickly zipped out Nidoking's line of sight. The attacker had built up to much momentum and rammed into the old wall behind us.

The wall gave in and Nidoking was lying on the floor, covered with dusty planks.

"Sky Uppercut on Nidoking!" Preston gave his Fire/Fighting the order.

Blaziken pulled Nidoking from the wreckage and swung his talon fist into Nidoking's chin. The large Pokemon fell back on the floor.

"Houndoom, Play Rough!" Zero was now entering the fight.

Houndoom pounced on Blaziken and started clawing and biting him.

Vulpix is at a disadvantage to both Houdoom and Nidoking. Her fire attacks would be useless. I grabbed Blue's Pokeball. Who cares about being fair. These guys don't play fair so why should I?

Blue's Pokeball opened and he landed on the ground. He looked around he was very confused of the location and all the fighting.

"Vul, Vul, Pix, Vulpix!" Vulpix barked over to the Marshtomp.

"Marshtomp, Marsh, Marshtomp!" Blue thumped his chest and sent a Mud Shot in Houndoom's direction. The Fire/Dark type was nailed by the gunk.

Nidoking shook the old building as he ran towards Vulpix and Blue.

"Vulpix use Flamethrower, Blue use Water Gun. Hold him at bay!" I ordered to my Pokemon.

They opened there jaws and sprayed their attacker with fire and water. Nidoking was slowing down. He stomped sluggishly towards them. The fire was leaving black marks on his tough skin and water was pushing him back. I was surprised he lasted that long, seeing as Water-Type moves are more effective against Ground-Types.

The Spike Pokemon seized the two Pokemon and lifted them in the air.

"Seismic Toss!" Curt yelled.

Nidoking leapt into the air and threw to my Pokemon to the ground, breaking the floor boards.

I started to hear what sounded like a motor. To car. Coming towards us. Shit.

The entrance to the old building suddenly bursted into pieces. Dust filled the air and clouded my vision. A large black truck with huge trailer on the back appeared as the dust cleared.

The doors to the trailer opened. An aged man covered in a dark cloak approached us. The battle had ceased and there was silence. An Alakazam began to follower the man in the cloak. The man was Sithis.

Sithis motioned to his Alakazam. The Psychic Pokemon's eyes lit up and raised its right spoon. Ryker's bag was snatched from his grip and floated into villain's hands.

"Sorry to spoil everything but I see these orbs as fair game." The old man hissed and let out a chuckled. He started to walk away but Ryker grabbed a Pokeball and threw it in Sithis' path.

A Scyther hovered in front of the man with its deadly scythes raised. Sithis threw the bag in the driver's window and the truck took off.

Sithis turned toward Ryker as Scyther returned to its master's side.

"I will stop you.....father!" Ryker yelled.

My eyes widened. Ryker told us that Sithis worked with his father not that he is his father!

"Mom died for you and your cause. Even the you weren't satisfied. You left me to hunt out those orbs for evil purposes. You lied to Mom about how you were going to use them. Now she's dead because of you! Scyther, X-Scissor!"

A battle broke out between the two and I returned to mine. Jase sent out his Staravia, hopped on its back and took off after the truck.

-Ryker-

"Scyther, X-Scissor once more!"

The battle between me and my father had gone on for awhile now and Scyther was worn down.

"Alakazam, Protect."

A blue veil surround Alakazam and Scyther's attack bounced off uselessly.

"Now use Psyshock."

Alakazam's eyes turned pink and shards of psychic energy nailed Scyther. My Bug Pokemon collapsed in defeat. I returned Scyther and threw Umbreon's Pokeball.

"Alright now, use Dark Pulse!" I commanded.

He released a shadowy wave of black and red towards Alakazam. Alakazam had no time to put up a Protect and was hit by the attack.

-Bree-

My Pokemon were exhausted. Both were worn down and tired and beaten. Same as our opponents. Right when Houndoom was about to breathe fire, Zero returned him. His Abra grabbed hold of him and they were gone.

"Zero!!! Why did you leave me?!?! I'll kill you, you coward!!!" Curt yelled out to nobody, "Nidoking take them out with Earthquake!"

The whole warehouse started to shake as Nidoking plunged his hands into the ground. Everyone was falling over the Pokemon were most effected by it.

"Come on guys get up," I called to my partners,"we have to keep fighting!"

"Say goodnight! Hyper Beam!"

I could see the orange beam charging in its mouth. It launched the attack at our defenseless Pokemon. This was it.

But the Hyper Beam never hit our Pokemon our anything for that matter. Something deflected it. It was legendary Pokemon that created the orbs. Mew.

The legend had pink hair and resembled a feline with a long tail. It floated in the air and smiled innocently.

"Mew." It giggled softly. The Pokemon rammed into Nidoking and sent it flying into its trainer. Mew's eyes glowed pink and also lifted up a defeated Sithis and Alakazam and threw them out as well.

They stared in awe. They pick themselves up and ran off.

-Jase-

"Bank left!" My Flying type swerved from the attack.

I was tailing the truck with the orbs. A couple of the goons got on the roof and started to attack me.

"Brave Bird!" I screamed. This was suicide.

We rammed into the thugs and there Pokemon. We rolled to the very end of the trailer. One of them got up and pinned my arm down his foot.

My Staravia was panting on the roof and was spent.

The Order of Darkness member laughed as he pulled a knife from his belt. Then suddenly a pair of gloved hands grabbed him from behind. My assailant was punched off the truck by Zero. What? Why would he save me?

"Return your Pokemon," he held up the sack with the orbs in them,"we are leaving."

-Bree-

I stroked the legendary in awe. He was quite to marvel. The villains escaped but Mew had saved us.

"We have to find Jase. He could be in trouble." Preston said.

"Already here." Jase entered the destroyed door way with a guest. Zero!

He tossed Ryker the bag.

"Why did you help us? Aren't you with them?" I questioned harshly.

"I was. What they do is wrong. They have tried to kill so many times. I have as well. I apologize for that. I was wrong and my vision was blinded. I thought.....I just thought that maybe with the orbs I could revive my Espurr. But Espurr have wanted me to do such terrible things to get him back."

There was long silence. I was choked up. All he wanted was his friend. His companion to join him again. But he can never see him again.

"Once again, I am sorry for my actions." Zero started to walk off. Mew came up and nudged him. He nuzzled the once-criminal affectionately. As if to thank him.

"Thank you." Ryker said.

"Where will you go?" I asked.

"With this guy, I guess." He said.

Mew waved goodbye and the both walked away together.

"We have a party to attend." Preston held my hand as we walked back to the school along with Jase and Ryker.

This is a dangerous life. We are unsung heroes. We are the one to protect those who don't know there trouble. We look after the innocent from the shadows. We are the Protectors.

All the feels right now am I right? Sorry for the long period of silence but life, sports, and school have gotten in the way. The title of this chapter is an ominous reference to the next book FYI. I don't know when I will release the sequel. I will take a break and work on other things. Thank you to those who got me 2.8k reads!!!! Round of applause people. The reason I started this was to improve my writing but my quality started to slip away from the beginning because after a while it felt like a chore to type and that I had to do it.
