Chapter 20

Let the Games Begin

I waited in the dark tunnel leading to the stadium. The roaring of the crowd in the stands drowned out all sound. I took a deep breath and ran my fingers on the Pokeballs on my belt to reassure me. I felt a hand touch me. It was Preston's.

"The announcer called our names. Lets go." He coaxed.

I slowly moved towards the small light at the end of the tunnel. Preston and I neared the end side by side. The cheering grew louder. I stepped out of the tunnel to be blinded by artificial lights. It was an indoor stadium. A metallic roof covered the sky above us.

A line of battlers stretched across the battlefield. We took our spots by the trainers and waited as the last few contenders were called.

"The best of luck to all of our contestants," the announcer's voice boomed into the microphone,"now lets see our first round matches!"

Pictures of each contestants flashed onto the giant screens that hung around the stadium. The pictures started to blink and shuffle around. My picture stopped next to a girl's with dark skin and short curly hair.

"Our first match will be Bree Taylor from the Hoenn Academy versus Alice Chester from our very own Sinnoh Academy!"

The crowd erupted with excitement. I tried to find my friends in the mob of fans but failed. The other battlers cleared the field.

"Good luck. You've got this." Preston said on his way off.

A referee stood on the side lines and reminded us of the rules. "This will be a one-on-one battle and you are only allowed one substitute. Now shake hands and lets have a good match."

We shook hands. Alice didn't send me any death glares or anything and nor I to her.

I smiled. "Let's have a good battle."

She smiled back. "Yeah."

I took my position on the opposite side of the field as her. I reached down to my belt. I put my hand on Vulpix's Pokeball but I quickly found my hand on Blue's. He could do this. The referee gave us the signal to go. I hurled Blue's Pokeball in the air. It opened up and Blue came jumping out with a white light.

He landed on all fours and glanced towards me. I nodded at him and grinned. He nodded back.

"Go, Luxio!" Alice called.

A small Pokemon came out with a black mane and blue fur. It growled and flicked its tail back and forth.

"Alright, Blue lets start off with a Tackle!" Blue bounded towards Luxio and rammed into it. The Luxio didn't show severe injury as it stood back up.

"Luxio, use Bite!"

The lion cub Pokemon charged at Blue and opened it's jaws wide. Blue dodged the attack.

"Go for a Mud slap, Blue!" He raised his mud covered hand to deliver the blow.

"Use Flash!"

Luxio's fur illuminated and the blinding light shown around the stadium. Blue couldn't see and missed his attack. He was disoriented from the Flash and was defenseless.

"Luxio, use Spark."

Luxio coated its self with electricity and ran into Blue. He was sent into the air and crashed to the ground seconds later.

"Looks like its lights out for Mudkip!" The announced shouted dramatically.

Blue stirred and slowly got up. He slammed his front feet to the ground and let out a great cry. "Mud, Mudkip!"

He opened his mouth and a stream of spiraling water shot out. Luxio was engulfed in it and was being beaten around by the circling water. He was using a Whirlpool attack. Luxio was trapped in the whirlpool and couldn't pull of an attack.

"Blue, Take Down!"

Blue rammed Luxio out of the whirlpool and lands hard on the ground defeated.

"You did great, buddy!" I returned the tired Pokemon and substituted with Vulpix.

Vulpix easily defeated her Budew. We shook hands and I enjoyed the moment. Everything would change tomorrow. Tomorrow we go after the orb.
