Wedding

Dawn's face burned as she looked at the "guests," all of whom were just as confused as she and Kenny were. Ash was awkwardly tugging at his tie, Misty had her arms crossed and her eyebrow raised, and Brock was struggling to hide his laughter. Drew and May sat in the front row, both looking like they weren’t sure whether to intervene or watch the chaos unfold.

Kenny adjusted his tie with a nervous chuckle. "Uh, Mia? What’s going on?"

Mia, now wearing a plastic tiara and holding a clipboard, clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention. "Welcome, honored guests, to the wedding of Aunt Dawn and Uncle Kenny!" She turned and gestured dramatically. "They are clearly in love and need help realizing it."

Dawn threw her hands up. "What? We’re not—"

"Shhh!" Mia scolded, pointing a finger at her. "This is my wedding, and I’m the wedding planner. You will follow the rules."

"Do I have to do this?" Kenny whispered to Dawn, who gave him a death glare.

"You think I want to do this?" she hissed back.

"Okay!" Mia continued, ignoring their protests. "First up, the vows. Uncle Kenny, you go first."

"I—what?" Kenny sputtered. "I didn’t write any vows!"

Mia beamed, holding up a piece of paper. "That’s okay! I wrote them for you. Here, read this."

Kenny snatched the paper and scanned it, his face growing redder with each passing second. "I’m not reading this."

Avery, sitting in the front row, frowned. "You have to! Mommy says you can’t disappoint a girl on her wedding day."

Kenny groaned, glancing at Dawn. "Fine." He cleared his throat, holding the paper with trembling hands.

"Dawn, from the moment I first met you, you’ve been the light of my life. Your laughter is like music, your eyes like stars, and your courage inspires me every day. I vow to always support you, cherish you, and make you smile, even when you don’t want to. You are my best friend and my forever."

The room went silent, save for Brock choking on his laughter in the back. Dawn stared at him, her mouth hanging open.

"Okay, Aunt Dawn, your turn!" Mia chirped, handing her another sheet of paper.

"Absolutely not—" Dawn began, but a pointed look from Avery silenced her. Gritting her teeth, she read aloud.

"Kenny, you’re the most annoying person I’ve ever met. But somehow, you always make me laugh. You’re dependable, kind, and, ugh, fine, kind of cute. I promise to always keep you grounded and to remind you to be less of a showoff. You’re my best friend, and, apparently, my forever."

Kenny blinked, unsure whether to laugh or be offended. "Gee, thanks."

"Perfect!" Mia declared, clapping her hands. "Now, for the rings!"

Dawn and Kenny exchanged horrified looks. "You don’t have—" Dawn began, but Mia pulled two actual wedding bands out of her tiara.

"Where did you even get those?!" Dawn exclaimed.

"eBay," Mia said proudly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Before they could argue, Mia handed Kenny the first ring. "Put it on her finger," she ordered.

"Do I have a choice?" Kenny muttered.

"No," Avery replied, folding her arms.

Grumbling, Kenny slid the ring onto Dawn’s finger. She sighed and returned the favor, ignoring how warm his hands felt against hers.

"Okay, now you may kiss!" Mia declared.

Both froze. "No way!" they yelled in unison.

"You have to!" Avery said, crossing her arms. "It’s not a real wedding unless you kiss."

Dawn looked at Kenny, her face beet red. "Do we seriously have to?"

"Apparently, we do," he grumbled.

Mia tapped her foot impatiently. "Hurry up! The guests are waiting!"

With a groan, Kenny leaned in slightly, and Dawn did the same, both closing their eyes and bracing for the most awkward moment of their lives.

"Wait!" Brock yelled, standing up. "Can I get a picture first?"

"Sit down!" Misty snapped, dragging him back into his seat.

Their lips barely touched before both pulled away, looking anywhere but at each other. The room erupted in applause, and Dawn swore she saw Ash trying to stifle a laugh.

"Congratulations!" Mia shouted. "You’re officially married!"

Dawn groaned. "You owe me for this," she muttered to Kenny.

"Big time," he agreed, his face as red as hers.

As the "ceremony" ended, Drew leaned over to May. "That was... something," he said.

"Yeah," May replied with a giggle. "But you’ve got to admit, they kind of do make a cute couple."

Neither Dawn nor Kenny dignified that with a response.
