Putting the Air in Aerodactyl
" Hey how is he doing?* Gary asked, curious.
Before Oak could reply, a raven haired girl came running from the bushes. " There!" She exclaimed.
" Amura ice steps!"
" Amuuuuraaaaa!"
The girl hopped onto the steps.
Then she jumped onto the crazy flying Aerodactyl.
Gary blinked. " Please don't tell me...."
Oak sighed and nodded. " It was Wisty."
Tracey was busy sketching her like crazy. " Wow! She looks like a cowgirl! Except she's wrangling an Aerodactyl!"
Dora turned to Crystal. " Does your friend do this all the time?!*
Crystal nodded. " Yes."
" What does she think she's doing?!"
" If I were her, right how she's thinking how to calm the animal down." Crystal replied innocently.
Gary groaned. " We need to get her down. Now. She's already hanging from its tail."
Crystal took her binoculars out. " Actually now she's climbing it."
Meanwhile, up there, Wisty was gripping its tail tightly, slowly in inching her way to its body.
" Easy.... Easy.... Eas- WOAH!"
The aeroe flew up, leaving Wisty dangling from its tail and gripping onto it tightly.
Gary watched in disbelief, running a hand through his hair. “She’s going to get herself killed!”
Oak sighed, adjusting his glasses. “She’s been like this ever since she could walk. Always chasing danger.”
Tracey continued sketching furiously. “This is incredible! The Aerodactyl’s wingspan is massive, and Wisty… look at her determination!”
Crystal casually lowered her binoculars. “She’ll be fine. She’s always fine.”
Gary spun to face her. “HOW can you say that?! She’s dangling off a prehistoric Pokémon like it’s a jungle gym!”
Meanwhile, Wisty managed to haul herself closer to the Aerodactyl’s body. She grit her teeth, her hands slipping slightly on the leathery skin. “Easy… easy…”
The Aerodactyl let out a screech, twisting mid-air, trying to shake her off.
“Amura!” Wisty called down. “Use Aurora Beam! Just enough to spook it!”
The Amura on the ground let out a soft cry, summoning a shimmering beam of light that narrowly missed the Aerodactyl’s wing. The creature screeched again, but this time it slowed down, confused by the flash.
Taking advantage of the moment, Wisty scrambled onto its back, clutching the base of its neck. “Alright, big guy,” she muttered, patting its rough skin. “Let’s calm down, okay?”
From below, Gary’s jaw dropped. “SHE’S RIDING IT. SHE’S ACTUALLY RIDING AN AERODACTYL.”
Crystal handed Gary the binoculars with a small smile. “Told you she’d figure it out.”
“Unbelievable,” Gary muttered, raising the binoculars.
Wisty carefully guided the Aerodactyl, using gentle words and small tugs on its neck. Slowly, the Pokémon began to descend, circling lower and lower until it finally landed in the clearing.
As Wisty slid off its back, she gave it a pat. “There, see? You’re not so bad when you’re calm.”
The Aerodactyl let out a low rumble before flapping its wings and taking off again.
Gary stormed over, his arms crossed. “What were you thinking?!”
Wisty brushed some dirt off her clothes and shrugged. “It was spooked. Just needed someone to help it out.”
“You could’ve been killed!” Gary exclaimed.
Wisty grinned. “But I wasn’t.”
Oak chuckled, walking over. “Well, Wisty, you certainly know how to make an entrance.”
Tracey flipped his sketchpad around to show her. “And I got it all down!”
Crystal patted Wisty on the shoulder. “You’re crazy, but at least you’re consistent.”
Gary groaned, throwing his hands in the air. “I’m surrounded by lunatics.”
Wisty smirked, grabbing an apple from her bag. “You love it.”
Then, her phone rang and she picked it up.
" Hello?*
" Hey, Wisty?* Ash's voice came through. " Did you remember what you had to do there?"
" OH YES!" Wisty exclaimed. " The reason Professor Oak sent me here! TTYL, big bro!"
Wisty ended the call and ran off.
Gary looked at Oak. " What did you ask her, Gramps."
" Nothing." Oak replied.
" Well you must have told her something because she's running off."
Oak's eyes widened. " She wouldn't..... She couldn't....."
" What did she do?" Gary asked in a flat tone.
" Well, I might have told her I wanted a volcano sample......"
Gary’s jaw dropped. “YOU ASKED AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD TO GET A VOLCANO SAMPLE?”
Oak rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “It was more of a hypothetical wish… I didn’t think she’d take it literally.”
“Gramps, she’s Wisty!” Gary exclaimed. “Of course she’s going to do it!”
Tracey was already sketching again. “This is going to make a great visual for my research journal. ‘Young assistant ventures into a volcano!’”
Gary groaned, running a hand down his face. “This isn’t research, it’s child endangerment!”
Meanwhile, Wisty was speeding off toward Saydra Island’s volcanic crater. “A volcano sample,” she muttered to herself. “That shouldn’t be too hard. Just gotta dodge some lava…”
Back at the clearing, Ash was still on the call, overhearing everything. “Uh, guys? Shouldn’t someone stop her before she—oh, I don’t know—falls into the volcano?”
Gary grabbed the phone. “Ash, tell her to STOP.”
Ash hesitated, then used his watch to call Wisty. “Uh, Wisty? Maybe you shouldn’t go near the lava?”
On the other end, Wisty’s voice was full of excitement. “Don’t worry, Ash! I’ve got this under control! I’ll call you back once I’ve got the sample!”
The call disconnected.
Gary stared at the phone in disbelief. “She hung up on you?!”
“She’s focused,” Crystal said, shrugging.
“Focused on falling into a volcano!” Gary shot back. “Gramps, what were you thinking?”
Oak sighed. “I didn’t think she’d actually go for it… but she is rather determined.”
Gary paced, muttering to himself. “Okay, okay. We need a plan. Tracey, get the equipment. Crystal, get Amura. We’re going after her.”
Crystal blinked. “You’re seriously going to follow her?”
Gary glared. “Of course we are! If we don’t, she’s going to end up melted into the lava, and then whose fault will it be?!”
Tracey looked up from his sketches. “To be fair, it’ll be partially Professor Oak's fault.”
Oak adjusted his glasses. “Noted.”
Gary groaned, throwing his hands up. “Let’s just GO!”
As the group scrambled to prepare, Wisty was already nearing the edge of the volcano, completely unaware of the chaos she’d left behind.
When Gary, Crystal, Tracey, and Amura arrived at the volcano, they spotted Wisty skipping out of the crater, holding a glass container with a chunk of molten rock inside. Her face was flushed with excitement.
“I got it!” Wisty exclaimed, waving the container above her head. “Volcano sample: check!”
Gary stared at her in disbelief. “You actually went IN there?!”
Wisty tilted her head. “Of course I did! Professor Oak needed a sample, so I got one. It wasn’t that hard.”
Crystal peered into the crater and shuddered. “You were in there?”
Wisty shrugged. “It’s not like I fell in or anything. Cibchoo made ice paths for me to walk on!” She patted Cubchoo's Poké Ball.
Gary groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. “You could’ve been burned alive!”
“Relax,” Wisty said cheerfully. “I was super careful! Plus, I had this.” She pulled out a fireproof suit that had clearly been worn during the mission.
Tracey raised a hand. “Where did you even get that?”
“Professor Oak gave it to me a while back, just in case,” Wisty said matter-of-factly.
Gary turned to Oak, who had just arrived. “Gramps, you planned for this?!”
Oak adjusted his hat, smiling sheepishly. “Well, I knew she was resourceful…”
Gary threw up his hands. “Unbelievable!”
Wisty beamed. “So, can we head back now? I’ve got a volcano sample and pictures of a rare Aerodactyl!”
Gary sighed, clearly exasperated. “Fine. But next time, no volcanoes!”
Wisty giggled. “We’ll see!”
As the group started back to the lab, Tracey leaned over to Gary. “You know, she’s kind of amazing.”
“She’s kind of a headache,” Gary muttered, shaking his head.
