This ship is one of the most popular shippings in the Sinnoh anime or just the anime in general. Many fans, especially those very attached to the Sinnoh Region (due to them Being introduced to the games or anime), shipped this and continue to ship this to this day. I see a tamer version of Pokéshipping here, Dawn is not so hotheaded as Misty was, but she and Ash would occasionally have a disagreement here and there, plus I just don't see "Love Interest" material in her. All in all, Pearlshipping isn't one of my favorites, but it's far from horrible, I see these two very close in a friends (or even Best friends/siblings) kind of way, but maybe these two do have some quirks that I am not aware of. I mean, her Buneary has HUGE crush on his Pikachu which is some solid evidence that a fan of Pearlshipping can use to their advantage. I can respect why fans ship it, but it's not one of my BIG ships.
