Dragon Princess Ch. 6

Adalynn paced back and forth while Giacomo prepared his set up. Whenever she took a peek out from behind the large curtain, her anxiety grew. All of Team Star was present in Segin Squad's base, including Penny and the other bosses. Seeing them in the audience made the nervous girl gulp down the growing lump in her throat. She didn't know why she was so eager to put this little performance together because just seeing a crowd gave her second thoughts.

"Yo, Addie. You ready for this?"

The girl looked over at her approaching boyfriend. "I…I don't…" Her breathing picked up. "No… No, I'm not ready. I can't do this, Momo."

Giacomo grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Yes, you can. We've practiced for weeks to get this right. I know you have what it takes." He nodded toward the audience. "Take another look."

Adalynn hesitantly stepped away to take another peek from backstage. Among her friends were also her pokemon. They were all waiting with excited gleams in their eyes. Even Moon was there among everyone after having grown accustomed to being around people. It took quite a bit to even get him to trust Giacomo, but now he was comfortable around all her friends. All of her dragons were there to cheer her on, and she found just a little courage deep down inside knowing they were anticipating her song.

"They're all waitin' to hear your amazing voice." Giacomo was beside her before she realized it, an encouraging grin on his face. "You gonna let them down?"

Adalynn pursed her lips in thought before a sigh left her. "No. You're right. I can do this. We can do this."

The boy leaned over to kiss her cheek. "In that case, I'll get 'em warmed up for ya. Take deep breaths. Come up whenever you're ready."

He climbed up on stage and strolled confidently past the curtain, wasting no time in hitting a few keys on his laptop to start up a beat. "How're y'all doin' today?! Ready for some sick beats that'll bust your ears open?!"

"Yeah!" the audience shouted.

"I can't hear you! I said, ARE Y'ALL READY?!"

"YEAH!"

"Now that's more like it!" Giacomo's warm up certainly helped Adalynn to calm her nerves while simultaneously getting the crowd pumped. "DJ Vice and the Dragon Princess are gonna bring this house dooown!"

Adalynn felt ready…well, as ready as she could be. She slowly climbed up to join the DJ on the stage. Giacomo looked slightly surprised at how quickly she'd found her resolve, but he was smiling wide at her. The girl approached the microphone at the center of the stage, glancing back at her boyfriend to give him a nod. With a push of his fingers, the music blasting from the speakers died down and changed to what she'd rehearsed with him. She took a deep breath, pushing back all her fears and worries to sing.

"You see, tonight, it could go either way
Hearts balanced on a razor blade
We are designed to love and break
And to rinse and repeat it all again"

Adalynn found the smiling faces of her friends and her pokemon to be motivating. What fears she had began to melt away as her voice grew clearer and more confident.

"I get stuck when the world's too loud
And things don't look up when you're goin' down
I know your arms are reachin' out
From somewhere beyond the clouds

"You make me feel
Like my troubled heart is a million miles away
You make me feel
Like I'm drunk on stars and we're dancing out into space
Celestial
Celestial"

She swayed to the beat Giacomo created, watching as nearly everyone seemed to move with her. It helped to erase her nervousness all together.

"I see the light shinin' through the rain
A thousand colors in a brighter shade
Needed to rise from the lowest place
There's a silver lining that surrounds the grey

"When I get lost, will you come back around?
Things don't look up when you're goin' down
I know your arms, they are reachin' out
From somewhere beyond the clouds

"You make me feel
Like my troubled heart is a million miles away
You make me feel
Like I'm drunk on stars and we're dancing out into space
Celestial
Celestial, oh-oh"

When the song came to an end, the audience was applauding and pokemon were crying joyously. Adalynn clasped her hands together, smiling wide at the sheer amount of positive reactions she earned. Giacomo joined her to give a slight wave to everyone, then gave his girlfriend a big thumbs up.

"Way to go, Addie!" he said. "That was great! Even better than when we practiced!"

"Thank you! Same to your music! I wouldn't have had the courage without you, Momo!"

Adalynn gave him a brief hug that had a lot of grunts melting at the adorable display. The pair met their friends and pokemon after leaving the stage. Eri roped them all into a big group hug, all while praising their musical talents among the group. It gave Adalynn a huge boost in confidence, and she assured them that she would perform again. The musically gifted couple lingered around the base even after most of their friends had left. Their pokemon were playing and having fun together, causing their trainers to laugh. Noivern flew around singing, meanwhile Hydreigon and Krookodile were having an intimidation contest. Roaring Moon simply took a nap under a tree. The rest of them played Keep Away with a ball colored like a Marill.

"Garchomp!" Adalynn called. The large dragon came running over to where she and her boyfriend sat, the ball in his mouth. "Careful with that sprained arm from training. Don't wanna make it worse."

"Gar gar."

Out of nowhere, Dragapult appeared, snatching the ball from him with a devious cackle. "Dra ga ga ga."

Garchomp immediately darted after her with the other pokemon following. "Aaand there they go again," Giacomo laughed. "Man, they've got so much energy after our performance."

"My team's always like that, though. Especially Garchomp and Dragapult. They love to run and play, even after overdoing their training. Garchomp got a small sprain this morning, but now that it's playtime, the injury doesn't even faze him."

Giacomo scooted closer to her, his arm going around her waist. "He's tough. Fun is more important to him than a small injury. We should probably have playdates more often." He wiggled his eyebrows at her, earning a giggle. "They get to play and get their energy out, and we get to spend time together."

Adalynn gave him a kiss. But their moment was interrupted by a cry of alarm. A female grunt of Team Star was yelling at an out of control Cyclizar. The dragon type was sprinting around as if it were on a rampage. Adalynn and her pokemon acted immediately without hesitation.

"Noivern!" Noivern swooped down to pick up Adalynn, carrying her by the arms in her talons. "Get me on that Cyclizar!"

"Wait, Addie!"

Ignoring the panicked voice of her boyfriend, Noivern did just as she asked, catching up to the rampaging dragon. Dragapult and Hydreigon flew after the Cyclizar, moving on either side and pushing it to keep it going in a straight line so their trainer could get a clear shot. The girl was then dropped onto its back where she held on tight, her other dragons moving out of the way.

"Calm down, Cyclizar!" she pleaded. "I know you're scared!" With her knowledge on dragons, she could tell the pokemon was both frightened and in pain. But it wasn't listening to her. With the bike handles installed on it, Adalynn grabbed hold of them and used them to steer it a bit. "Baxcalibur! Get ready!"

She was heading right for the ice dragon. Baxcalibur dug his claws into the ground, preparing himself. Right before Cyclizar rammed him, he caught it by the head and flipped it onto its side, finally halting it. Adalynn took that opportunity to lean over the dragon, examining its belly. Just as she suspected, there were small cuts covered in a sparkly pollen-like substance.

"There, there, Cyclizar. You're gonna be alright."

Giacomo and the grunt hurried over with potions and things for Adalynn to use. They were in awe of her skills, watching her clean the pokemon's belly and spray a potion on the area to heal it up. When the Cyclizar was on its feet again, it gratefully nuzzled the girl.

"Whoa! Awesome job, Addie!" Giacomo congratulated. "I always forget how attuned you are to dragon types."

"I'm so sorry, Adalynn!" the grunt apologized. "I was just testing out the new gear on Cyclizar when he bucked me off and bolted!"

"It's okay, but be careful where you ride. There was residue from a fairy-type attack on Cyclizar's injured belly. I think you might've startled a Flabébé or something hiding amongst some flowers."

"Oh, so that's what it was." The grunt suddenly gasped. "Wait, you could tell all that?!"

Adalynn smiled and affectionately rubbed Cyclizar's head. "I know dragon types. Few things scare them like that, and fairy types are toward the top of the list."

"I'll make sure to watch where I ride from now on." The grunt climbed onto the pokemon's back. "Thanks so much! Hasta la vistar!"

Adalynn waved and returned her pokemon after a job well done, but Giacomo suddenly pointed to her leg with a startled gasp when he noticed the splash of red on her black boot. "Addie, your knee! You're bleeding!"

Adalynn looked down to see that her boot had a rip in it where her knee was, which had a bleeding gash on it. She hadn't even noticed in the heat of the moment, but now that the adrenaline was dying down, the stinging pain was surfacing. It must've happened when the Cyclizar was subdued. She did recall her knee bumping into something, either a rock or one of the pieces of gear the dragon was wearing.

"Ouch," she hissed. "I didn't even notice it."

Giacomo took her hand and wrapped an arm around her waist as if she needed help walking. "C'mon, let's sit you down and get that taken care of."

He took her down to his tent where he kept his things whenever he was holed up in the base. He had some basic medical supplies in case of an emergency. Removing her boot, he gently cleaned the wound and wrapped it up in a bandage.

"Hey, you're pretty good at this, Momo."

He chuckled slightly. "Have to be when you're runnin' a squad. Had to lend a hand whenever the grunts got hurt or anything."

Adalynn sighed. "And now I'll have to ask Atticus to fix my boot, or make a new one."

"Well, that can wait. I say we go on back to Naranja. You should take it easy on your feet for a bit."

"Okay. It'll give us a chance to practice that new song, though."

Giacomo chuckled. "I like your thinkin'."

They took a Flying Taxi back to the academy in Mesagoza. Giacomo was an absolute sweetheart and helped his girlfriend all the way to his dorm even though the injury was minor. He sat her on his bed and moved beside her, opening his laptop for them both to see.

"Okay, so these were the lyrics you gave me. Have a listen to the rhythm and see if it sounds right."

Adalynn politely borrowed his headphones, putting them on to listen. The music followed her song almost perfectly. It brought a smile to her face. To think that the little lullaby she sang to her pokemon would be remixed and turned into a full-length song was almost unreal. She replayed the music so she could give it a test run.

"It's another day to fight the fray
My heart is soaring
To find my way towards the stage
Won't come easily
Troubled waves, spirits decay
Their words are daunting
But they cannot create what I will be

"They laugh at me
Throw taunts at me
I'm acting free
But they misjudge what they see
And I can only decide what I will be

"I'll be your sky and your fire
And I will go much higher
Stand up to the lightning
It is time to turn the tide

"I will be legendary
I will shine in your eyes
And you'll see that I'm worthy
To be in your spotlight"

Adalynn paused, removing the headphones. "Right there after the chorus, there should be a slightly longer break before the next verse. And the beat should soften a bit more for that second verse."

Giacomo leaned closer to the section of the song she pointed to on the screen. "Gotcha. I'll fix it." His fingers moved swiftly on the keyboard and touchpad to change up the music. He borrowed the headphones long enough to listen, adjusting the audio accordingly before handing them back. "Now listen to it."

Adalynn listened closely, singing along again and nodding at the parts he corrected. "That's much better," she told him. "I absolutely love this music you put together, by the way."

That made Giacomo grin. "Really? I'm glad you approve. It's technically your song, after all. I just remixed it." There was a pause when a twinkle of curiosity shined in his eyes. "Hey, I've been wantin' to ask, how'd you come up with that song anyway?"

Adalynn hummed. "Well, I thought it up because of the bullying in the past. Plus, you know my dragon types were young back then and easily got discouraged. I made that song to lift our spirits." She had a slightly sad expression at the memory. "I wanted my pokemon to know that no matter how many people looked down on them, they would always be in my spotlight."

Giacomo draped an arm around her shoulders. "Same to you, Addie. I don't care what anyone says. You'll be in my spotlight forever."

"Momo." She laughed lightly and playfully pushed him. "It's embarrassing when you say it like that. And cheesy."

The boy laughed with her. "It's true, though. That's how much you mean to me." Despite his blush, he was grinning from ear to ear. "Anyway, once we get this one practiced to perfection, we have to perform it for the team. It's too motivating of a song not to. Everyone's gonna love it."

Adalynn stretched her arms above her head. "Yeah. But for now, I think I'm gonna go clean up and get to bed. I've got class in the morning."

Giacomo was quick to set his laptop aside to help her to her feet with him. "Alright. But I'm gonna need a goodnight kiss first."

Adalynn took hold of his jacket and leaned in, pressing her lips to his. He responded immediately, his arms embracing her. When they pulled apart, the dark type user was smiling with joy.

"This is why the Treasure Hunt is pointless to me. You and all my friends in Team Star - that's my greatest treasure."

"Aw, Momo. Same goes for me, really. I don't need to go out searching for what I treasure most. I have everything I need right here."

The young couple spent a little too long sharing sweet words and exchanging kisses. It was a little later than expected when Adalynn made it back to her room, but she didn't care. Spending time with him was worth it, even if it meant going to class groggy the next morning. And thus, life went on for the Dragon Princess and her DJ.
