"Turtwig! Let's go!" Gardenia summoned Turtwig onto the battlefield, which surprised the trio.

"No way! She has a Turtwig too!?" Axl gasped as the two were watching the battle.

"I-I'm surprised she has one like me..." X admitted in shock as well.

"Totally, man!" Axl nodded in agreement.

Zero takes a moment to think, and takes out his Pokeball where he immediately sends out Piplup first. Axl's mouth curls into a smile and blurts out, "Awesome! He's using my-"

"Shhhh!" X shushed him and glared at him to subtly hint to him to shut up, Axl pouts and crosses his arms as he just watches the battle.

"Now, begin!" The referee yelled out.

"Alright then! Piplup, use peck!" Zero yelled out.

"Let's go!" Piplup yelled as he hops off and about to peck Turtwig.

"Turtwig! Use reflect!" Gardenia commanded, which Turtwig immediately created a small shield where, while Piplup was able to damage him, it didn't do as much as Zero hoped.

("Crap...") Zero thought. He knew he needed to think fast to take Turtwig down. "Piplup! Use peck again!"

Piplup pecks the Turtwig once again with a bit more damage, but not by much, much to Zero's annoyance.

"Now, use Sunny day!" Gardenia commanded as Turtwig's leaf twitched a bit and looked up as the sunlight appeared.

("She's definitely planning something! Gotta stop her!") Zero thought to himself and immediately shouted, "Piplup! Peck again!"

Then finally, Piplup pecks Turtwig one last time and he knocks her out, however because of his own hastiness, Gardenia grins as she says, "Roserade! Come on out!" As she summons Roserade to the battle who does a dramatic pose.

("Oh no.") The trio thought in horror as Zero gritted his teeth, having a bad gut feeling that this battle will be very tough.

"Okay then, keep on using the same move, Piplup!" Zero stubbornly commands which Piplup rushes right at the Roserade, who just dodges the Penguin Pokémon's attack. "Huh?!"

"Now, use Solar Beam!" Gardenia commands as Roserade creates a beam and, thanks to Sunny day, immediately shoots a powerful beam right at Piplup, who barely survives it as he gets knocked to the ground and rolls over from such a powerful attack.

Zero knew he needed to do something, so he took out his Pokeball and just before he could return Piplup back, he went in for another peck which did a bit of damage to the Roserade, but because of Reflect, it didn't do as much as Piplup hoped.

"Piplup!" Zero yelled out.

"Mega drain!" Gardenia ordered which Roserade's rose hands started to glow and started to drain Piplup, thus knocking him out. Zero tensed up and returned Piplup back to his pokeball as he was annoyed by his pride.

Zero puts away Piplup's Pokeball and takes out Starly's Pokeball as he sends him out to battle.

"So, this time you hope to win with a type advantage?" Gardenia asked confidently.

"Well, I'm with my last mon, so I gotta do what I gotta do!" Zero announced. "Starly! Wing attack!"

"Roserade! Again!"

Roserade charges up very quickly to shoot an solar beam right at Starly, who boldly flies right at her where he dodges around her beam with his wings glowing and slashes right at Roserade, which did significant damage as the reflect starts to fade away.

"Yes!" Axl cheered for Zero.

"Okay, Roserade! Grass knot!" Gardenia commanded.

"Huh?" Zero gets confused by the sudden change till he spots a spout of grass suddenly pops out and grabs Starly's legs to the ground, knocking him down. "Starly! Use wing attack to get out of the grass!"

Starly did just that as he sliced the grass out and flew up to rush at Roserade.

"Dodge it and use Magical leaf!" Gardenia commanded where her Roserade jumps over Starly's attack and shoots glowing leaves right at his back.

"Starly!" Zero gritted as he sees Starly struggling to get up, where his skin starts to sweat and breathe more heavily, "STARLY! Come on! You can do it!"

Starly breathing a bit heavily, and suddenly, his body starts to glow entirely which shocks everyone in the room.

"Woah! What's going on, X?!" Axl blurted out in shock while watching the battle.

"I don't know! Wait, huh?!" X answers and notices Starly's form starts to change. "What the?!"

Then, Starly grew bigger and his wings flaps once the glow stopped where his form drastically changed. His feathers are the same colour, but gains a long tuft of feathers, which curves forward on his head. X quickly takes out his pokedex; 'Staravia, the Starling Pokemon. They fly around forests and fields in search of bug Pokémon, moving together in huge flocks. They also tend to squabble over territory when flocks collide.'

Zero is at awe and shock that his Starly evolved, but shakes his head very quickly and notices Gardenia is very shocked, so he took advantage of that moment without hesitation. "Staravia! Use wing attack!"

Staravia takes that opportunity with his wings glowing and rushes into high speed, but before Roserade could dodge it, Staravia was much quicker now and slashes right at her, even harder as Roserade collapses from the painful attack.

"Wha-huh?" Gardenia blurted out as she was caught off guard. "Geez, I can't believe I got caught off guard. Return, Roserade. You did amazingly."

Gardenia returns Roserade back into her Pokeball, and the referee announces "The gym leader Gardenia has lost! The trainer Zero is the winner!"

"You did it, Zero!" X cheered as he got up from his seat and rushed out to his best friend.

"Hell yeah man! That was so intense!" Axl cheered too as he followed X to Zero where the two immediately jumped to hug Zero.

"Hey, no need to overreact." Zero told them off while being a bit flustered by their praise.

"Are you kidding me?! We were on the edge of our seats during that fight!" Axl argued back.

"Still, that was amazing, Zero!" X complimented him. 

"What about me?" Staravia asked once he flew to the trio's side.

Zero looks down at Staravia, and gives his usual calm smile while saying, "You did amazingly there, Staravia. Thanks." As he decides to put aside the sudden change for later.

"Heh! No problem, Zero!" Staravia cheered and flapped his wings joyfully.

"You were amazing back there, kid." Gardenia complimented him as she walked over, "And here is your very first badge as well." As she hands over the badge to him.

"Thanks." Zero nodded as he accepted it from her and decided to temporarily pin it on his coat.

"So, you lot heading to the second gym now?" Gardenia asked them.

"Yep. That's our next stop." Zero confirmed it.

"In that case, you should head to Veilstone city, where you go down, then go to the bottom entrance of Mt Coronet. You should arrive at Heartthorne city which is where the third gym leader Fantina is at, then you should keep going to the right where you get past Solaceon town, then keep going up till you turn to the right corner and you arrive at your destination." Gardenia explained to the trio. "Though, a fair warning, the previous gym leader decided to go to different regions to train herself, so she entrusted someone else to be her temporary cover up, so keep that in mind."

"Thanks for the warning, Gardenia." X thanked her.

"God, this region is so confusing and what's up with the backtracking we're gonna have to do?!" Axl complained.

"Regardless, thank you Gardenia." X thanked her.

"No problem, and oh yeah! There is a contest here too, so why not relax here for a bit before moving along?" Gardenia told them.

"Ah! That would be awesome! Thanks Gardenia!" X cheered happily with enthusiasm.

"Oh no." Axl whispered to Zero.

"Axl, quit complaining." Zero told him off, with Axl groaning and he rolled his eyes in response.

"Come on guys, I'm sure it will be fine." X reassured them, "Come on, let's go and have Zero's Pokemons healed up."

"Agreed. Come on."

The trio wave their hands at Gardenia who waves back and yells, "Take care!" As they leave the gym.
