Unexpected happenings (contestshipping)
Third person POV
"Beautify! Take the stage!" May exclaimed as Beautifly twirled around the hearts that appeared. An effect of the seal on its pokeball.
"Silver wind!" She called out. Obeying her command, Beautifly spun itself round and round on the spot, creating a shimmering tornado. The wind spread out in beautiful waves of silver, causing the hearts to burst into showers of pink sparkles upon contact.
"Morning sun!" May wrapped up her appeal as Beautifly started glowing, casting a slight glow on the sparkles closest to it.
"Wow! What a remarkable performance! Let's see what our judges would say to that!"
"Remarkable!" Mr Sukizo remarked immediately.
"Outstanding performance!" Mr Contesta continued.
"I've never seen such a healthy Beautifly!" Nurse joy finished up the review, leaving May to leave the stage.
"Next up, Drew from LaRousse City!" The loudspeakers blared, sending Marian's voice throughout the entire stadium.
Drew? That's weird... I didn't even know he attended this contest! May thought to herself. How in the world did I miss seeing his green hair?
Deciding not to reck her brains on analyzing something that trivial, she turned her head to the screen. Anticipating his performance.
As Drew emerged on the television screen, May frowned a little. Something just seems... off about him. He doesn't seem to have his usual spirit... wait, how did I detect that?
"Roserade, let's go."
Yep. Definitely lacking enthusiasm.
She watched as his roserade started off with a simple petal dance.
Typical Drew, too proud to even use seals in contest battles. May thought to herself.
It was probably his first contest in the Sinnoh region. Especially since he just arrived a week ago. May had remembered bumping into him on the ship as it was sailing to Sinnoh.
She snapped her attention back to the screen when she realized that he wasn't doing well out there. His Roserade seemed distracted, maybe even worried. May wondered why this was so.
Drew himself didn't seem to be acting normally either— he looked as if he hadn't slept all night.
May watched as he wrapped up his performance. That's weird... it seems to be lacking... maybe to the point where even she could call It lackluster.
Even so, it was still shocking for May when she looked up at the results and saw that Drew was eliminated in the first round. He never was! A flicker of panic rushed through her for a second. Wait... panic? Why would I be panicking?
"And now! We would commence to the battle stage! Each trainer..."
May didn't bother listening to the whole thing, thinking about possibilities on why Drew acting weird instead. She groaned when the loudspeaker announced her name but didn't complain as she walked back onto the stage.
"Glaceon! Take the stage!" May called out, her thoughts wondering to Drew.
"Ice beam!"
Why was he acting this strange?
"Dodge Glaceon!"
Perhaps something is up?
"Iron tail!"
Wonder what's wrong...
"And the five minuets are up!"
Already?
"Ben and his Cherubi will advance to the next round!"
I'm out already? May thought to herself. Well, I was kind of distracted... at least now I can go look for him! Changing out of her contest costume, she rushed out to look for her rival.
————————
Drew sighed as he walked back into the forest. The Pokémon Center was just too crowded to hold one more person within their doors. He guess it wasn't a surprise, there was a contest after all. He coughed slightly, getting Roserade's attention.
"Rose! Roserade!" Drew looked at his Roserade, sighing a little.
"I'll be fine, Roserade."
"Rose-rade."
Although he doesn't speak Pokémon, Drew knew his Roserade well enough to know that she was being sarcastic with him.
"Roserade... I'm just tired, ok?"
"Rose!"
It appeared that she didn't believe him. This was great... just great. Honestly, he was extremely tired and felt as if he could fall asleep any minute, but he didn't want Roserade to know that. It'll just worry her more than she already is. He coughed once more.
"Hey Drew!"
God, it appears that my nosey rival is here to rub salt on my wound. I should've never attended that contest... Drew groaned inwardly. Right now, his splitting headache didn't exactly approve of him meeting her. Especially since she could be quite talkative at times...
Honestly, he wouldn't care about that on a normal day. However, this day was nowhere near normal... at least not without advancing to round two or having a headache. He hadn't had one for so long that he wondered when he had last gotten one.
Still, there was no escape from the bundle of joy that... wait... she doesn't look very happy. He studied her gaze to read worry? Maybe even a tinge of sadness?
I must be seeing things with that headache of mine. He reasoned to himself.
"Drew! Are you alright? You seemed pretty distracted earlier." Concern was evident in her voice and Drew was surprised, even though it was only for a second.
"I'm fine... May... just leave me alone..." he mumbled. Goodness! Having a headache sucks...
"Hey, I know that there's something up. It's obvious Drew, and you're making it even more obvious by trying to hide it. What's wrong?"
That concern was definitely genuine and not a figment of his imagination. If that was so, why would she be concerned in the first place? Deciding that letting her know about his headache may actually shut her up, he decided to tell her about it.
"May, I'm having a headache, can you please shut up?!"
May was genuinely taken back by his sentence. A headache? What if he...
Just then, she heard Drew coughing. Coughs? She wondered.
Reaching forward, she placed her palm on Drew's forehead, realizing that he was burning up. She gasped as Drew flinched from the touch, sending her a look slightly angrier than usual.
"May! What was that for?" Drew tried shouting out of instinct, only to find his voice hoarse. He was already highly annoyed by his headache and coughs. He most certainly didn't need someone to make things worse than they are.
"Drew... you're burning up... you should probably take a rest."
"Burning up?" Drew echoed, apparently not having processed its full meaning.
"You're sick Drew, and you ought to rest before that fever gets any higher."
"I have a fever?" Drew croaked out. Well... my throat does feel kind of sore... and that headache...
"Here!" May pulled him by his arm to the nearest clearing. "You can rest here."
"But May..."
"No buts. Just rest... ok?" She helped him set up his sleeping bag. "Do you have any spare medicine?"
"No..."
May sighed, she had never seen Drew actually looking weak, but now he seemed extremely vulnerable for some reason with his eyes half closed, betraying fatigue. He was obviously worn out.
"I'll think of something... how did you get so worn out in the first place?"
Drew sighed. It was obvious that May was going to waste his day away anyway so he guessed that there was no harm in telling her.
"I think I may have overworked myself the pass few days. I wanted to make a good impression in my first contest here. This morning, I woke up late with a mild headache and a sore throat. I nearly missed that contest..." he paused. "I guess there's no difference in missing it anyway."
Well, typical Drew. Caring more about his career than his own health. At least that will explain why I had no idea he was in the contest. May sighed.
"Let's take your temperature." Rummaging in Drew's bag, May pulled out his thermometer and handed it to Drew. After a minute, she read the reading displayed. her eyes widened at the sight.
"Whoa... 38.8 degrees Celsius is no joke... that'll be considered a high fever if it goes up by 0.2 degrees! We can't let that get any higher or you may be at risk of brain damage! How in the world did you catch this?"
Drew could only groan in reply.
"Roserade, can you take care of him for a while?"
"Roserade!"
"Thanks Roserade, I'll be back soon, ok? Make sure he gets some rest."
"Rose! Roserade!"
——————
Roserade sighed as May walked away, looking at his trainer trying to sleep and failing to do so."
"Roserade!"
"Roserade... I'm trying. I'm exhausted but somehow..." he watched as Drew sighed once more.
Honestly, Roserade was extremely worried for Drew. Since the start of his journey, he had never fallen this sick. Sure, there were times he had felt a little warm, but he was usually better by the next few hours or so. This was different, 38.8 degrees Celsius was quite a fever, even if it wasn't considered a high one yet.
Almost instinctively, Roserade found himself reaching for a leaf and blowing through it, creating a pleasant and soothing sound.
"Roserade... when did you learn grass..." before Drew could finish his sentence, he fell fast asleep.
Opening her eyes to see her sleeping trainer, Roserade found herself looking at the leaf in her hand. Did I just... did I just learn a new move? She shook his head in amazement as she started guarding his sleeping trainer.
——————
May searched high and low for Oran Berries. She had heard from Brock that Oran berries gave the person, or Pokémon, who ate it strength and could sometimes cure a fever. Hopefully, it would cure Drew's fever as well.
The soil here is too dry. She tested the soil. I would need to go closer to a water source. Making mental notes of her location, she decided to head south.
After a while of searching, she finally found a tree of Oran berries. Finally! She thought to herself. Now at least I've got something that could help Drew.
—————
Upon reaching back to the base, she decided to smash up the berries. Surely that would help him stomach them easier? She hadn't much idea, but she knew that it was what Dawn did when she was trying to feed her sick Pachirisu. The young coordinator had also did claimed that her mum does it for her when she was sick.
Just as she was finished, she heard a moan. Turning around, she realized that Drew was waking up.
"What... where...?"
"Hey Drew! Any better?" May asked as he slowly sat up.
"A little... I guess..." he coughed a little. "Wish I could stop coughing."
"Here! Eat this." May brought the bowl of crushed berries over, only to have Drew stare at them with a dull look in his eyes.
"I'm not hungry..."
That wasn't surprisingly. Sick people didn't usually have any appetite at all.
"You should still eat something, these are Oran berries, they'll help with fever."
Even in his condition, Drew chuckled. "My my, May, I had no idea you finally decided to learn more about berries." He broke off coughing.
Well, that what you get for teasing me! May rolled her eyes.
"Come on Mr Rose. Eat something!"
"I'm not hungry..."
"Rose... Rose!"
"Roserade... I'm really not..."
May knew that she should be more patient with sick people, but she really didn't want to argue with Drew much longer.
"Here!" May stuffed the fruits into Drew's mouth while he was arguing with Roserade. I guess arguments are useful after all... she thought to herself.
Drew was kind of stunned by whatever was happening. As he chewed on the berries, he felt his cheeks burning even more than his head. Am I blushing? He wondered in the midst of the awkward situation.
"I'll... I think I can eat that myself, May." Picking up the bowl, he started eating the contents of it.
—————
May's POV
Although Drew was only able to eat half the bowl, I was relieved. It was better than him eating nothing at all.
Right now, he was sleeping peacefully at the side of the clearing with his Roserade beside him.
I wonder how long it'll be before he's better. Sneaking a look at him, I realized how cute he was... wait... WHAT! May! He's not cute! I scolded myself. He is just a friend, he is just a friend, he is just a...
Just then, Drew started mumbling in his sleep.
"No... no..."
"Drew? Are you ok?" I asked, concerned about him.
"No... come back..."
"Drew? Drew! Wake up! It's just a bad dream! Drew!"
—————
Drew's POV
I watched as Team Rocket captured May and our pokemon in cages. Although I wasn't captured, I was forced to continue looking at them get away. Helpless to stop them.
"May! No... no!" I cried out in despair. Watching as they got away.
"No! Come back! Please..."
"Drew? Drew! Wake up! It's just a bad dream! Drew!" I heard a voice call out to me. Opening my eyes, I realized that it was just a dream, but it seemed so real...
"Drew? What happened? You're crying..."
"I am?" I rubbed my face and felt the moisture on it. Yep, I really am crying...
"Do you want to tell me what happened?" She asked softly. Once again reassuring me that everything was going to be all right.
"Team Rocket... they took away our Pokémon... they took you away..." I could feel myself crying now. I wondered what she must be thinking. Oh the great Drew is crying over something like that? Yea... she'll probably be thinking of something like that.
"Shhh... Drew, I'm still here. It's just a dream." I was shocked. That response was one I would have never thought about. Not In a thousand years.
"You're not laughing?" I asked softly.
"No?" She sounded confused. "Why would I? Everyone has their fears, it's normal to have nightmares. Now shhh, go back to sleep. I'm fine, ok?"
Listening to her words of comfort was surprisingly pleasant, kind of like listening to a lullaby. Before I knew it, I was asleep once more.
——————
Things were clearer the next I woke. My headache was gone... I guess that's a good thing. The next thing I noticed after my lack of a headache was my stomach, it just felt empty. The sky was painted with vibrant colors, the dawn of a new day. Did I really sleep that long? I sat up, stretching myself a bit.
"Hey Drew! You're awake!"
Turning my head around, I was greeted with the sight of May cooking something.
"I didn't know you can cook." I remarked. Whatever she was making, it smelled good.
"I learned to do so from Brock. Want some soup? It's ready."
"Thanks. I'm famished."
"Well, it's good to see you've got your appetite back. It's not a surprise though. Your fever's gone. I checked it when I woke up this morning."
Handing a bowl of the soup to me, I took a sip of it.
"Not half bad. It's good enough to feed starving people."
"Drew!"
"Ok ok, I'm just kidding. It's good."
May smiled. "Well, it's nice to see your humor never changes. You scared me yesterday, Drew."
"I didn't mean to..." I argued back as I finished up my soup.
"Hey Drew."
"Yea?"
"Be more careful with your health, ok?"
I sighed. "Ok Ms Maple."
Seeing her blush at my sentence made me chuckle as I prepared for a brand new day.
—————
This is the first time I'm writing a Pokémon oneshot. Is it ok? I haven't watched the advanced generation session for so long I hope I've gotten their personalities right. How did I do?
Honestly, I've a feeling most of the oneshots in here are going to be contestshipping... eh.
Also, this is the longest chapter I've written by far with a total of 2500+ words. In fact, I wonder if I'll ever be able to accomplish this feat again...
See you in the next chapter!
