Chapter 15: Tower•
The monk had stood over me by the entrance of the final room. I was leaning on the wall, too tired to keep going.
"It's unnecessary to keep going at this state" he said "Behind this door is the last man you'll battle. You came this far in under a day. That's already very impressive. When a trainer comes this far, you may come back later after a break"
"Why would I take a break after I've lasted this far?" I glared. My Pokémon were beside me eating a few oran berries I had in store for them to restore their energy "I'm almost done... I can still keep going"
"You're sweating and hyperventilating. You may stop now" I shook my head and pushed pass him to enter the door, seeing something, or someone, I didn't expect to see.
"Are you serious..?" the red headed teenager glared at the elder standing in front of him "Is this all I get for coming all the way up here!?" The boy shoved the thing he had in his hand in the elder's face "What am I suppose to do with this!?"
"I didn't expect to see him so soon" I said to myself and hid my arm "What's with him?"
"He was battling with the elder of the tower" the monk said "Do you know this young man?"
"Not really" I wanted to cross my arms, but when I moved it, I groaned in slight pain that got Silver's attention. He looked at me and looked even more annoyed before seeing my arm and softened his expression.
"You..." he faced me, keeping his eyes on my arm I'm trying to hide, but it wasn't very easy when I could hardly move my neck from my sore body.
"Are you causing trouble again?" I asked him casually. He snorted and looked away.
"This young man successfully beat me in battle and received a wonderful gift we offer to the trainers who make it this far" the elder told me "I was just saying he should treat his Pokémon more kindly... The way he treats them can be too harsh.."
"That's none of her business, old man!" Silver glared.
"I let you use that Pokémon after letting you go and you do something as stupid as disrespect someone older than you and treat your Pokémon harshly?" I opened my arms "I won't hesitate to take that Pokémon back" he took a step back, glaring.
"You'll have to get pass me in battle if you think you can do what you want!" He send out Totodile again "You're all talk and no game!"
"Strange how we had this conversation before. I'm not scared of you, kid. I've seen scarier stuff" I showed him my arm "And to be honest, this isn't the worse injury I've ever had. I can take another beating from your Pokémon if you think I'll accept you behaving this way" he started shaking in anger.
"Who do you think you are!? You're acting like you're my mom or something!" I snorted.
"I could be anything but that" I pointed at the space between us "Go on, Chikorita. Battle for me" she nodded and stood before me.
"You're going to use that weak little thing to battle me?"
"Why not? I got all the way here with her help" he groaned "You speak loud and glare like it's going to take you anywhere. You can treat your Pokémon like their tools for war, but that'll keep them from growing properly. We must be raised properly" his face got more red in anger and shouted at his Pokémon.
"Totodile! Use bite!" His water type came running to attack Chikorita on the neck, making her cry in pain.
"Chikorita! Use vine whip!" Chikarita used her vines to slap away Totodile, but nothing worked.
"Sure enough, those who lecture like you and be 'nice' to Pokémon... They cannot defeat me" Silver moved his hair from his face "all I care about are strong Pokémon that win every time" Chikorita finally decided to wrap her vines around Totodile and started squeezing it tightly, making it let go "W-Wha-" Silver flinched.
"You may claim to be nothing like Team Rocket" I glared "but you're just as bad-" My eyes suddenly saw stars in every spec in the air. My knees went weak after my head went blank I lost balance and fell forward. Chikorita threw Totodile towards Silver so she could quickly catch me mid fall.
"Chika!" Chikorita gasped. The monk I was with quickly helped me sit down and feel my forehead.
"Your fever is getting worse" I slapped his hand away and looked at Silver looking at me with a unreadable face.
"There's nothing about you that convinces me that you're nothing like Team Rocket. Run away if you must like you did before. That attitude will get you nowhere" I glared, getting back up and walked over to tower him "I'm a nice enough person to be strong enough to come all the way here in this condition" I glared at his puzzled expression as I grabbed his arms, ignoring the pain on my own "You stupid little red head... What relations do you have with my mother..." I had no idea what I was talking about. My head was spinning and the world around me quickly went black while the ceiling started running.
I had no memory of what happened earlier that day back in the tower. I woke up in the resort, surrounded by older kimono girls taking care of me and was told that I passed out due to a dangerous fever I didn't want to treat. Apparently I made it to the very top, but didn't get the chance to beat the elder since I ran into a red headed boy that I'm sure I knew what they were talking about.
"I wonder what we talked about..." I asked myself, laying in bed with an ice pack on my forehead "I must've said something stupid" I looked down to see my Pokémon laying on my stomach "Did I say something stupid?" They looked at each other, not knowing how to respond. I sighed and looked back at the ceiling "That's what I get for pushing myself... How long have I been in bed?"
"A day had passed since you left the tower" I looked at the door and was surprised to see Falkner in strange baggy clothing walking into the room with a bucket of ice.
"Falkner?" He approached me and changed my rag on my forehead.
"I'm surprised you remembered my name" he snorted, sitting beside me "You really done it again, haven't you?" I looked away.
"I don't know what you're talking about"
"You pushed yourself when you got sick. That's too risky for your fragil little body. You don't even have the color back in your face yet"
"I'm fine" I hummed "I need to finish my battle on the top of the tower"
"You're not going anywhere until you're better" I groaned annoyed.
"I'm fine!" I moved my hot covers off me and tried getting up, but he wouldn't let me "Hey!" I whined "Who died and made you my father!"
"I'm just trying to take care of you. Apparently you're in no condition to even take care of yourself. Who else is going to do it?" I looked at his serious face "You need to stop pushing yourself, V. Look at what you're doing to yourself. Do I have to remind you about what happened that day I took down your door?" I sighed, relaxing on my bed.
"I don't need help"
"That's what you said last time. I noticed that you were being carried out the tower with damp hair. I'm guessing you went to sleep like that?" I slowly nodded "Honestly..." he sighed, doing something with the bucket he brought in "You make me worry about you. What am I going to think when you're out on that journey on your own?"
"Mm..." I purred and got back up to hug him behind his shoulders "Why must you worry about me so much after your job in protecting me is finished" I poked his cheek "Don't tell me you're falling for me" his cheeks got a bit red, but didn't go as red as I expected.
"It's not that" he stood up, having me fall back on my bed, and faced me "I've spent years trying to find a way to get you to safety. I've spend that time caring for you, even if you didn't know it at the time. Police out there are still trying to find Team Rocket members, and when I was told there was a victim who was under their control, I got on the job and looked after you while trying find evidence that you were being treated poorly, but you were a difficult girl and Ronan knew how to keep a secret. Through those years of caring for you, I see you as a little sister who I have to take care of" his back turned towards me again "I've been there this whole time, so I can't help but still worry about you" I smiled at his kind words and shakily got up to hug his back again "V?"
"Thank you for caring about me so much. You have no idea how grateful I am to have many close friends who cared about me, even if I was stubborn" he turned back to look at me "I still have the number you gave me, so if I ever need you, you're one phone call away" I giggled "And don't worry... I won't be stubborn and refuse help. You're right. I need to be more careful. If I'm given such great people to hold in my life, might as well keep them in it. They were placed in it after all. I'm sorry it took so long for me to see that" he smiled and pet my head.
"Get some sleep. I have to get back to my new job"
"New job?" He handed me a piece of paper that looked like a drawn map.
"This is where you can find me. Be careful getting better. I love to stay, but I can't leave my post unattended for too long" I nodded and sat back down on my bed "Don't come until you are fully recovered"
"I can't promise that I'll come fully recovered, but maybe a quarter still ill?" He snorted and walked away.
"Well, suit yourself. Just don't push yourself" he waved his hand before walking out my room. I waved and laid back down in bed. Gee, how did I get so lucky to have such good friends?
While staying in bed like I was suppose to do, I decided to message most of the people I have in my contact list. Everyone was very excited to hear from me, even the gym leader girls. I had asked my coworkers if they heard from Lily, but she hasn't got back to speaking to anyone since what happened.
"I wonder what happened to her..." I placed my Pokégear on the side of my pillow and sighed "I can't even tell you if that's even her real name or not... How can I possibly know where she is?" is she mad at me? No, she hasn't talked to anyone since court "She was the most worried about me all through my time working for that man... She was like a mother figure" I frowned "I really want to speak with her and tell her how much I'm improving, but if she finds out I don't take the time to help my illness, she won't be too happy"
There had been dozens of older kimono ladies coming in and out of my room to check on me and bring me food every so often. For someone who didn't complete her battle in the tower yet, I'm getting a lot of attention.
"What gives..?" I asked myself while the old kimono girl changed the sheets on my bed while I ate on the table on the other side of the room "I'm just running a fever. I don't need all this attention"
"On the contrary" the sliding doors of my room slid open, letting in the monk who escorted me through the tower and the old man that looked kinda familiar "You made it to the top. Which means you do not have to battle me" the elder said.
"Huh?" I blinked confused.
"The elder had watched you while you were talking to the young man who mistreat his Pokémon" the monk said. I was a bit confused "The red headed boy?"
"Oh!" Does he mean Silver? "What about him?"
"Do... you not remember what happened?" I shook my head "Well, that's okay. The point is that you made it to the top. The elder decided to not battle you because of what you said to that young man" I thought back at what I said, but can't remember.
"It's okay if you don't remember" the elder smiled "You showed amazing courage and strength. You hold such wisdom even if you were in no condition to make it through that tower and battle. That is quite admirable, and I want to congratulate you on completing the Bellsprout tower" I blinked a few times again before eating again. The men almost fell from my lack of enthusiasm.
"A-Aren't you a bit excited?" The monk asked "You can get the full package of the resort and come back whenever you like for a spa day!" I put my spoon down.
"But I didn't complete it" I said "I'll feel more accomplished if I got to battle you" the elder waved his hand.
"The soul purpose of that tower and why we battle trainers is to give wisdom to those who need it. You are quite intelligent enough and went through enough to do things on your own. You did grow up faster, after all" I looked down "I don't want to get into your personal life, but you didn't get to grow up like many other kids. You've grown on your own and seen the world for what it is. You don't need my wisdom, you just need my help" he gestured his hand to show the room "This room will always be available to you, whenever you come back" I slowly stood up.
"B-But..!" The elder chuckled.
"If you're so eager to feel like you need to show that you deserve this treatment" I flinched, thinking back on why I'm going through this journey... "Why not go to the Violet City gym?"
"The gym? Like a gym leader?" He nodded.
"He's quite strong for a young man, and he's much stronger than I am. If you can beat him, it'll be the same as completing the Bellsprout tower. How about that?" He kindly smiled. I sighed and smiled back.
"Well, that doesn't seem so bad"
"You still get the full package though" the monk said. I shrugged and sat back down to eat "When you are able to, go ahead and enjoy the rest of your stay" he placed a pamphlet on the table I was on "Here's what you can choose to do before you leave and come back" I nodded and watched everyone leave my room. I sighed and pushed my empty bowl away.
"I'm starting to think all this luck is just a coincidence..." I looked at the charm on my bag and smiled "But... What can I even say? I'm just blessed"
