Chapter 58: The Stagnant Jungle and it's Noisy Caretaker!
On the second island of Akala in the Alola region, it was time for Bob to resume his Island Challenge as he took a nice stroll on Route 8 while he was on his way to the location of the second trial but wasn't in any rush to arrive on time or the needed urge to begin. One of the reasons with the most beautiful sight of the sparkling ocean that stretched across the view of the boy's eyes. It was more than a view to Bob thought, it began to pop some memories into his head on why he was brought there. He remembered his parents arguing with him about trying new things and to travel the world to discover all new regions, cultures, and Pokémon.
Bob sat on a bench and watched the waves crash against the cliff of the route, thinking of all the people he has befriended right on day one and all of the sweet memories of everyone. He couldn't forget how negative he was about coming across the region, and how Saki was just as bad as he was, worse to be exact. Even after their doubts, the two learned to be a bit more open to their new and exciting environment. After a great movie and a good night's sleep, Bob was in a pretty good to be marching towards the next location of his next Island Trial Challange within the grassy habitat known as Lush Jungle.
"Hello! I'm here for my trial!" Bob exclaims as he walked into the entrance of the jungle. Stepping into an area where trees and grass overgrow felt like stepping into a painting where all sorts of green shading were tossed on a canvas, and the tree trunks and ground was colored a similar dirt brown color. It was a great and pretty view, but Bob wanted to get his trial started right away while his trainer flame was still burning. "Hello?... Hello?... Umm..."
He walked a little deeper into the jungle to see if the island trial captain was around, but before he made the thought of turning back until tomorrow, he looked down to a large patch of grass in the heart of the jungle to see a little girl sleeping with a small group of Fomantis snuggling on her joining in for a group nap.
"Zzzzzzzz... Mmmmm..."
Bob dropped his face from a seeking curious face, to one avoiding of any emotions, a stonecold one. He facepalmed when he realized that the one slumbering like a Pokémon herself, Ayame. He stood there for a minute waiting for the girl to wake up, but she seems pretty content to wake up anytime soon.
"Ayame, Ayame. Wake up," Bob gently nudges her to wake up, but she only whispered jibberish as anyone would mutter in their sleep. The boy pats her head with a little more force, but that only made the girl turn to the other side still fast asleep.
"Mmm... May I... have another bowl of rice... please..."
"BREAK TIME IS OVER! BACK TO WORK!"
Ayame woke up scaring the daylights out of her, all the Fomantis sleeping with Ayame flee deeper into the woods.
"AHH-! T-trial-goer-?!"
The small girl straightened her cartoonishly large hat on her small forehead and tightened her small fists. Bob couldn't help himself but hold a chuckle to see Ayame's cheeks puff up to a shade of pink.
"Just what do you have the right to disturb my peaceful nap, Trial-goer?! I was dreaming I was feasting on a high-class meal!"
The girl ran up to Bob and attempted to hit him for interrupting her sleep, but Bob placed his hand on her forehead to keep her small hands off of him.
"Pffft! Sorry, Ayame! Sorry-Ayame! Please calm down! Ayame-!"
Bob pleaded as he almost gave-in to his laughter but the small girl was still thrashing her arms like a deranged person.
"NO! No, no, no!" You take away my nap, I take away your life! Trial-goer!"
Ayame began to kick her tiny legs, which Bob suffered a blow to the shin, which was when he had to share why he was in Lush Jungle before he had to get his shin replaced in surgery.
"OUCH! Okay! Okay! Ayame! I'm here for my challenge! My Island Trial Challenge!"
After a minute to catch theirs breathes, Ayame still wasn't exactly the happiest that her nap was interrupted, but as a Trail Captain of the Alola Region, she was in the position to fulfill her duties properly.
"... ... ... Is that all? Very well."
The girl bent down to grab a large garden bag as she pulled out a Forage Bag and hands it to the boy.
"So here's how my trial works, Trial-Goer. My trial is more of a treasure hunt if anything," Ayame rubbed her eyes before she took out a small photo of four objects. "You will need to present to me the following items that you can find deep into the jungle. A Mago Berry, a Tiny Mushroom, a Revival Herb, and a Miracle Seed."
Ayame was short on the details before curling up into a sleeping position on the same patch of grass before she was interrupted.
"Let me know when you have collected all of the thingies, I'm going back to sleep..."
The small gardener expected the trial goer to be on his way into the forest like an obedient Pokémon, but Bob didn't move a step. He wasn't exactly, onboard with her image of ignorance, the least he wanted was Ayame to somehow keep surveillance on him and his progress.
"Hey, Ayame," Bob approached the girl over the fact she tried to hurt him, at least wanted to be conscious enough to hear him. "Look. I'm sorry for waking you up in a highly immature fashion. But that doesn't mean you could give me the cold shoulder after a hot minute of going berserk! So why don't you, well-umm... Why can't you tag along with me on my trial and catch up?"
Ayame hissed at Bob once he playfully stroked her hair, she slapped his hand as she snuggled the side of her cheek onto the luscious grass.
"Go away, let me sleep, Acerola isn't here to unit us! I just want to sleep! I won't repeat myself and I'm not moving from this spot!"
Ayame closed her eyes, Bob urged to change her mind but remains useless when Ayame wouldn't respond. Bob for a second considering leaving her alone and giving up, until he was given a bright idea, which involves the movie he saw the other day. It was a movie about a compelling and awe-inspiring villain who kidnaps a woman and sacrifices her for his own benefits. Putting that image in his mind, Bob slowly gasped as the grin on his face extended across his face. There were two particular movies about this villain, which Bob had memorized.
"Ayame... Oh, you poor girl. Little one, it's a simple calculus. This universe is finite, its resources, finite. If life is left unchecked, life will cease to exist. It needs correcting."
Ayame slowly turned her head to what Bob said, looking with a slightly concerned look.
"Ahh-What? W-what does that mean exactly..?"
Bob approached the girl with some dark intentions.
"It means; I did not ask for your trust. I demand only your obedience."
Bob scooped Ayame like a kid and threw her on his shoulder, like a kidnapped person on TV. If Ayame wasn't happy before, she was screaming and thrashing her arms and legs like a kid throwing a tantrum.
"Wait-Hey! WHAT THE-?! You can't do this to me! Let me gooooooooo! Put me down! PUT ME DOOOOOOOOOOWN!"
Bob had a devilish laugh as he stomped through the woods like a mythical creature.
"The hardest choices require the strongest wills. I can only imagine your position right now, Reality is often disappointing. But for me, hoo wee! Reality can be whatever I want. Now then! My universal journey for green produce begins!"
(Gap)
Heading far west with Ayame still thrashing her small arms and legs, she began to feel fatigued the deeper she was taken.
"TRIAL GOER!! YOU BETTER LET go of me or I'm going to kick... you... in the..." Ayame yawned, slowly blinking herself into a nap. "... In the balls... when I... wake up the nap..." Now the girl was knocked out. Bob lightly chuckled before he held the girl in his arms.
"Heh, heh... A small price to pay for salvation."
Throwing her back on his shoulder, Bob found himself and a couple of bushes filled with colorful and nutrient-rich berries, the lad was impressed that someone as sleep-lacking and grouchy as little ol' Ayame could grow and harvest all by herself. Taking out the small photo of the items on Bob's list, he tried matching the color for the Mago Berry. The bush with the pinkest berry with a shape of a curved claw, a small group of Fomantis came running around the bush to Bob, looking a quiet steamed.
"Fomm!"
"Foooom!"
"Fom! Fom!"
The attitude of the small Pokémon caused the boy to back away, but the very person that was being swung around the shoulder made the Fomantis stop for a second, curious about what he had in his possession since it didn't look anything like the previous items they were ordered to keep away from other trial goers.
"Shoot! Stay back! I have your master! Look at her! Look at MY accomplishment!"
Bob lifted his arms in the air while holding the sleeping girl, which caused the Fomantis to squeal for Ayame's safety. Before they had a chance to act, Bob stomped his foot like an unstoppable rampaging titan the size of a tree in the jungle. That nonexistent shockwave frightened the Pokémon, at this point, Bob was having the time of his life, while he took out a Pokéball.
"Heheh... So this is what your protection has come to? In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter, it was never personal. But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet... I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much. Or at least your little annoying jungle."
The boy sent out his Houndour, which was an obvious choice to use in a trial which involves Grass Type trial. Making a move right after he was finished with his enjoyment of theater.
"You're strong. But I could snap my fingers, and you'd all cease to exist. Houndour, Sludge Bomb!"
The combination of the panicking resistance of Fomantis attacking with Razor Leaf and the overwhelming power of poison exploding at once was already enough for the small Pokémon to flee in terror. The sound of Bob's cackling victory was enough for him to hop all around, Ayame flopping around like a ragdoll.
"The universe required correction. And now, to collect the rest of the infinity-I mean-the other healthy crappy things Ayame wants to collect."
Now northwest, Bob and Houndour walked a trail that leads to a flatland of mushrooms, both big and small alike. Bob didn't take any further steps to collect a small mushroom because, for all he knew, it could've been booby-trapped for all he knew. He returned Houndour back into its Pokéball as he swapped his choice.
"Destiny waits for no man. Not even one who shall bring the universe to its knees. Dartrix, secure the sky, aid me as a search for a Tiny Mushroom." Dartrix flew up in the sky to keep the ground an eye while the boy tried finding the smallest mushroom he could find while avoiding conflict with any Pokémon disguised for a surprise attack. That was when a horde of Paras popped out of the large mushrooms and sprung a Stun Spore.
"ACK! Dartrix! Hurry! I'm under attack! Use Peck!"
The bird dives down and lands a super-effective hit on one of the Paras, seeing a predator above caused the others to flee, but out of the blue, a Parasect leaped in the air and lands an X-Scissor on Dartrix. When Rowlet tried to attack back with a Peck, it dodges at the last second while it lands an Energy Ball.
"Huh. Ayame trained you well, it seems that I have underestimated the Pokémon she has trained. Dartrix, return! Hariyama! Let's go! Show them your sheer force! Ice Punch!"
Hariyama delivers a punch so overwhelming, Parasect flew across the dress, appears to be dropping something before it creates an impact on the ground, eventually retreating.
"Huh," Bob took a look at what the Pokémon had dropped as it ran off, and things couldn't have been adding up so well before. "A Miracle Seed... That explains Parasect's powerful Energy Ball. Everything is going to plan."
Another smile grew on Bob's face as he stroked the hair on Ayame's head.
"Oh, little one... Do you think your Pokémon of nature can stop someone such as I? I am on a quest, with goals before I finish and after I finish. When I'm done, half of humanity will still exist. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be. I hope they remember you. Your Pokémon would be ever so grateful."
Now the final item on Bob's list was the Revival Herb before his "quest" which was just his trial in a nutshell. He approached a grassy area with lots of leaves and sprouts. Dartrix was sent back out to keep an eye on any Pokémon that could possibly spring out for another attack just like the previous times. Strange as it is, there wasn't even an out of place sound from the grass. Not a cry, not a peep, nor a growl. Too bad Bob didn't notice the fishiness of the cool and calm atmosphere of the forest, so he plucked the revival herb after pulling so many weeds.
"Well done team! I finally rest, and watch the sun rise on a grateful universe. Let is go and watch the fruits of our effort!"
(Gap)
Returning to the central entrance of the jungle, he placed Ayame on the small patch of cool grass that was comfortable enough for her to sleep in. Before Bob could wake her up after a day of being carried around like luggage, there was a sudden sound of large steps approaching the entrance. Something big, something embracing itself with energy, Bob took his stance as he had an idea of what was to come, the Totem Pokémon.
"It is time..."
That's when the same group of Fomantis approaches Bob, and then a giant Lurantis stepped out of the jungle, which obviously followed the smaller Pokémon to point that Ayame was presumingly hurt by the trial goer.
"Lu-LURAAAAAAN!"
Lurantis's aura flared to life! That's was when there was no turning back, it was time to face the boss of the forest. If it was a hint that the totem Pokémon was upset of it to screech an echo across the jungle, Bob wouldn't back down.
"No turning back! Dartrix! Come on out! Let's start with a Tackle!"
The battle began, the bird lands a small hit on a Lurantis, which stricks immediately strikes back with its own X-Scissor, Dartrix was pushed back by a bigger blow.
"Keep your distance, use Growl and weakened it!"
To lower the attack of a Totem Pokémon, it was going to take a bit more than one measly status move, but shifting its own gears, Totem Lurantis yelped, calling for help. That was when a Castform was called right up to the front lines with the boss of the jungle, Bob was surprised to see a Castform appear since he completely forgot his consideration to catch one.
"What the-?" There wasn't even enough time to react, the temperature rose a little bit, the sunlight began to peek deeper in the cool and dark jungle, it had used Sunny Day! Its own form had changed, just like his cousin's own Castform! Its appearance and typing had swapped, not only it benefits the user, but Lurantis began to charge up something powerful, but with the help of the sunlight, it was ready to attack in an instance!
Castform launches a Weather Ball, which was a Fire-Type move from the weather boost, luckily, Dartrix dodged it, but Lurantis managed to land an attack on top of the Pokémon. It wasn't a Solar Beam, but it was charged up and used a natural energy source just liked it.
"Solar Blade..." Bob muttered, watching Dartrix get back up from the attack. Bob returned Dartrix back into the team, swapping his choice with Hariyama, things were finally standing back on his own two feet.
"Use Arm Thrust!"
Slugged with hand jabs, Lurantis tried to keep Hariyama to a distance with a Low Sweep, but the heavy sumo Pokémon took the attack rather well, despite its lowered speed.
In a desperate move, Lurantis attempted to heal itself with a Synthesis while Castform tried to distract the opponent with a Weather Ball, but to its surprise, it didn't harm Hariyama very much.
"Heheh, Hariyama's ability is Thick Fat, meaning your Fire and Ice-Type attacks are totally useless to my Pokémon! Now then, stop it from healing with an Ice Punch!"
Struck with an icy fist, cutting off its regenerated HP, Lurantis fought back with Solar Blade, but clashed attacks with the rivaling Pokémon and its close up Focus Blast, both sides were pushed back, Castform tried to land a Headbutt to do more damage than what it could've done with Weather Ball, but that was a huge mistake once it was jabbed down of the count from an Arm Thrust. One more Solar Blade lands from a distance, but the sun's light began to weaken back to the state it was been. That was a great sign to see now that Lurantis couldn't power itself up with the sunny weather. Instead of finishing it with his current Pokémon, he decided to swap to his third member, Houndour.
"Here we go! Last stretch! Let's give it our all! Ember!"
Specks of embers lands on the Totem, but it wasn't giving in, it charged forward trying to land a Low Sweep for type advantages, but instead of Dodging, Houndour charged right into the Grass Pokémon in a highly risky move.
"Don't be so reckless! Use Bite!"
But this was no ordinary clench with its fangs, Houndour's mouth with set in flames, chomping the leg of the totem that was set on fire, it had let go of Bite, and learned a new move, Fire Fang! Totem Lurantis fleed into the forest after that attack, meaning it had given up, Bob was believed as he petted his hound happy with his left hand.
"This... Does put a smile on my face."
Hearing some rustling grass, Bob turned around to see Ayame had woken up from her nap.
"A smile..? Happy you kidnapped me? I hope you gotten a sick laugh out of that..."
Ayame was upset, but Bob shrugged, apologizing for his little stunt of his.
"Ahh... I'm sorry, little one. Perhaps I treated you too harshly."
The movie quotes flew over Ayame's head as she quickly handed over Bob's award after successfully handing over the 4 objects needed to complete the trial.
"Here, your Grassium Z. Now leave me alone. I wanna sleep in peace this time."
Bob pats Ayame's head as she sat back down on the patch of grass to enjoy her cozy sleeping position while Bob headed back to Melemele Island, snapping his fingers on the boatride back.
"I... am inevitable."
