Chapter 52: Molly's Wonderland
A massive beast of sun, light, and fire, lion-like in shape, traveled through space to reach the earth. A massive beast of darkness, the night, and the moon, wearing large glittery wings on its bat-like body, traveled through space to meet its counterpart. The sunne beast and the moone beast both charged up beams of light that joined together and sent them hurtling towards a humble temple on Poni Island. From the light that struck the temple, the cosmogs were born. The four island guardians attempted to contain the energy from the beam within the temple's radius, but it was much too mighty. A massive amount of invisible energy spread across the four islands. Although it was powerful, it went unnoticed. Most of Alola's people barely flinched at the sudden breeze pushing past them. Most didn't even notice the subtle change in the air surrounding them. Regardless, the extraordinary surge of cosmic energy had one major consequence.
The consequence took place in the familiar Cosmos cooperation, where the day fell to evening. Most of the company's workers were wrapping up their shifts, but in the building's laboratory, one man continued to work tirelessly. Several days have passed since the ID3I was first tested, and the result was less than desirable. The cooperation was as lively as ever, but at the same time, many questions were left hanging in the air. What now? What was to be done about their discovery of the ultra beast? Would the ID3I be used once again?
Arc fiddled with the machine's control panel, checking both calculations and calibrations. He mumbled to himself softly, lost in his work. From the large doorway, a set of bright eyes watched him curiously. A small hand clenched the door's rim.
"What is he trying to do?" Molly pressed her lips together, keeping quiet as she studied the man's action. With Arc's back facing the door, she could barely see what he was doing.. Such a poor view was rather irritating, but at the very least, she was able to snoop without being detected.
Well, until her smooth, undercover operation was disturbed. She heard the sound of paws quickly trotting towards her, approaching from behind. It was at that moment Molly knew it was game over.
"Jolt! Jolt, jolt!"
The barking of a Pokémon echoed as Molly accepted her face. She was tackled by Rōzu's Jolteon, which promptly licked her cheek.
"Stop! Stop! Get off, girl! Get off! Get off!"
Molly shoved the energetic Pokémon off her, Jolteon continuing to pant happily. She sat up to see Arc twist around, meeting her glance.
"...I could explain," Molly began.
"Bullshit." Arc's palm smacked into his forehead. "Just, so much bullshit. This is just great, amazing! I thought I was going to get work done, but here comes a little snot -nosed brat to ruin everything."
Molly looked to the tile floor. "You're so mean..."
Arc ignored her comment. He pointed to Jolteon, who just innocently scratched behind its ear.
"And you just had to bring that thing with you? Seriously? You had to bring the damn thing that runs amuck like it owns the place?"
"Hey! I didn't bring it here, and I didn't ask to be tackled!" Molly whined. "It gave my hiding spot away!"
Arc's fists clenched tight. "...Hiding spot?"
Molly shot herself in the foot, and she knew it. Panic set in. She slid her hands over her ears, preparing herself for Arc's raging screams.
"Okay, I was spying! I'm not gonna lie bout' it! I... I just want to know what's going on with the machine and stuff—"
"Stop right there. Does that have anything to do with the calculations I assigned to you?" Arc asked, cutting her off.
"Um..."
"The answer is no, right? Well then, If you want to be of any damn use to Cosmos, why don't you go complete those calculations? Especially considering that I assigned them to you FIVE days ago. Your uselessness is really holding me... no, everyone back!"
"Arc—"
"I need those numbers from you to improve the machine's processing, but hell, at this rate I should just get them done myself! You're a detriment, you know that? Utterly worthless! You never do a thing you're told, you're just fine and dandy with getting paid for bouncing around and lollygagging! It makes me sick!"
"I'm sorry, okay?!" Molly shouted. "I get it! You think I suck! But will you stop and listen for a second?"
Arc's face slowly grew a faint red. "Why? You never listen to the adults around you!"
"Well! I... I..."
Molly paused. She couldn't come up with a defense.
Arc cocked his head to the side. "Oh? You're not going to talk back? Is the little brat actually learning some respect? Well, I doubt that."
"Could you please stop hating me for just a second?! Just for one second!" Molly threw her hands together and pleaded. "Stop being such a meanie already!"
"I'm not being mean. I'm being honest. Apparently, I am the only person here who won't take your shit!"
Arc's voice raised, making Molly flinch. Jolteon, who was standing behind her, dashed underneath the nearest table to hide. Molly wished she could do the same, but she knew running away wouldn't solve a thing. She couldn't escape his wrath.
"Then... then why do I have to take yours?!" Molly shrieked.
"...You have a lot of nerve, little girl!" Arc's face was cherry red, his voice booming. "Why would you have to take my shit? Why? Because I'm your superior! The boss's second in command! I actually get things done, even if it means dealing with idiots like you! Between you and those teen boys, I think I'm going to go insane! I'm going to yank all my hair out! What on earth is OZone thinking!? This company only suffers because of you! And here I am, acting like a babysitter, while you act like everything is a fucking joke!"
He stomped his feet on the ground. Molly took a couple step back, tears welling up in her eyes as the rant continued.
"A man like OZone doesn't deserve to deal with nuisances such as you! So what the hell?! I can't deal with this! I can't keep dealing with this! I can't... I can't..."
The red color drained from Arc's face, his complexion becoming a pasty white. His blood pressure had raised extremely high due to his rage, and as a result, the world started to spin around him. He lost all the energy in his body, his legs turning into lead. Right before Molly's eyes, the large man collapsed. He crashed face-first onto the ground.
"Um... A-Arc...? Are you okay?"
Molly slowly approached him. He was out-cold, completely unresponsive. Even when she poked vigorously at his cheek, he didn't move.
"Er... this can't be any good! I broke him! I broke him!"
Bullets of sweat slid down her face as she stood above the unconscious Arc. She heard Jolteon creep out from under its hiding spot, skipping to her side and rubbed against her legs like a cat. She patted its head as she sighed.
She spoke to the Pokémon with a shaking voice. "No use in freaking out, right? I'm sure Arc will be fine... I just wish I got to ask him some questions. I wanted to tell him... that everyone deserves to know what's going on. You know, about the whole machine and portal nonsense? I mean, we all watched Mitsuki get really, really hurt. But even after that, everyone is being all quiet about this whole dimensional travel business! It's stupid!"
Molly shook her head, before wiping away the sweat and tears that coated her face. She took slow, calming breaths as she turned towards the door.
"Guess it can't be helped though. Let's go. I gotta tell someone that Arc passed out."
She took a single step before a sudden, strong gust of wind blew past her, stopping her in her tracks. She looked to Jolteon, whose ears were flicking back and forth. It whimpered.
"That was... weird." Molly scanned the room, the air returning to a motionless state.
"... Jolt!"
The spikes on Jolteon's back perked up as it leaped in front of Molly, taking a protective stance. Its ears flattened to its head as it violet eyes glared forward.
"What has gotten into you?!"
Molly was startled. She has never seen the Pokémon act in aggression of any kind, nor has she seen it tense up like a cornered animal. It happened at the flip of a dime, seemingly without reason. She noticed that Jolteon's eyes were locked on the ID3I. Her imagination brewed up horrible scenarios, most ending with the machine blowing up or starting a catastrophic fire. Her heart began to pound.
"Jolteon?" Molly felt her body shaking. "What's wrong? What's happening?"
Before another word could be said, a high pitched sound pierced their ears. The Interdimensional Data Detector Interface rattled, its lights flashing and inner-mechanisms overheating. Smoke surrounded the machine as small sparks of electricity flickered from its circuits. Molly couldn't breath. She didn't know if it was because of the smoke that dove into her lungs, or the fear that tightened her throat.
The piercing grew louder, and louder, and louder. Jolteon kept its ears flat as it backed away, but Molly stayed in place. She screamed in frustration.
The machine's screeching lasted for roughly a minute. Despite its noise, and despite Molly's screaming, no one came bursting into the room. Arc remained passed out on the floor. When the screeching, piercing sound stopped, the child and the Pokémon found themselves alone with an anomaly. Floating above them was a familiar, dark purple mist. It swirled into itself, creating a flat, circular shape. It was just like before. There was no mistaking it, it was a portal.
Molly caught her breath after screaming for so long, looking past the fading smoke and straight at the portal. She felt like her eyes were lying to her, what she was seeing had to be impossible. Why would the machine activate so suddenly?
She felt something tugging at the end of her sweatpants. She looked down to see Jolteon desperately trying to pull her back, its teeth clenching her pants tightly. She raised her head to take a second look at the portal. Shock kept her from moving her feet.
"Jolt! Jolt!" Jolteon eventually gave up its stubborn attempt to drag Molly away from the portal, releasing its grip on her pants. It barked in an attempt to grab her attention. Molly still didn't move.
"Y-you think a monster is gonna pop out? Or something?"
Molly watched the portal, but it remained dormant. No Ultra Beast came to attack, no surprises came to scare her, nothing.
"Maybe not...?"
The silence soothed her anxiety, almost making her feel completely safe. Now, with her nervousness subsiding, all she was left with were questions. What the heck just happened?
At heart Molly was a curious, if not foolish child. She was also adamant. She wanted answers that Arc wouldn't give her, and she wanted to solve the newfound mystery of the self-activating machine. Her reckless side took full control, throwing caution into the wind. She slowly stepped closer to the ID3I. Jolteon barked madly, trying to make her stop.
"It's okay, girl. I'm being super duper careful, okay?" Molly looked back and smiled. "I'm just doing my job as a scientist, figuring stuff out!"
She stepped over the unconscious Arc still lying on the ground and continued to approach the machine. She got close, much too close. Something began to pull at her entire body, yanking her forward. It was like she was a piece of scrap metal, being drawn in by a large magnet. She tried to firmly station herself. Yet, no matter how hard she tried to resist, she found that her feet continued to slide across the floor. She noticed that she was being dragged straight in the portal's direction, leading her to believe that the portal was the cause of the magnetic pull.
"I'm... I'm about to be sucked in!"
Molly struggled against the portal's pull, but it was no use. She was a mere few feet away from the portal's face. Her feet began to lose their contact with the ground, the portal pulling her towards its opening center. She could see a pitch-black darkness through the opening, a darkness she was about to be thrown into.
"Jollllte! Jollllllte!" Jolteon went to dash after the girl, but Molly shook her head.
"No closer! No closer! You'll get sucked in too!" Molly cried out. "Go get someone, Jolteon! Go get help! Go get help!"
As she screamed out to the Pokémon, Molly was sucked into the portal. She disappeared from Jolteon's sight, having been plunged straight into another world.
For an instant, Jolteon stood motionless like a deer caught in headlights. Once it returned to its senses, and it sprung back to life, it darted out of the laboratory to find help.
The world was full of darkness. The sky was pitch black. It was the world the boy had known since the day he was born, it was the only world he knew. It was bleak and hopeless, but that didn't stop him from having hope. Despite living in such a gloomy place, he had a single ray of sunlight in his life.
His home was Ultra Megalopolis, a city deep within Ultra Space. The world Ultra Megalopolis inhabited was lightyears away from sunny Alola. The two dimensions were too distant to cross each other by conventional means, but tonight was different. It was the night where a surge of energy was created by the Sunne beast and Moone beast. Not only did the beast's beams of energy birth the Cosmogs, but it also created a link between the two worlds. The Interdimensional Data Detector Interface reacted to the energy surge, and became that link connecting Alola and Ultra Megalopolis.
But that boy living in darkness, Dulse, wasn't aware of that. That night was supposedly just like any other night, where he watched the Megalo tower gleam with artificial light. The tower was in the center of the industrial city. The black, prism like buildings and the people that inhabited them depended on the tower for its illuminating gleam, as it was their only defense against darkness. Still, there was a lingering fear of that tower. It held a demon inside, the one who stole the world's light.
Dulse anxious heart swelled, despite the tower remaining motionless. A little hand grabbed his shoulder. He looked down to his only ray of sunlight, Zossie. She swept a strand of her long, red hair away from her face as she giggled.
"Dulse, what are you staring out into space for? You owe me some attention!" Zossie wrapped her hands around Dulse's arm, looking up at the boy with her bright eyes.
"Sorry." Dulse hung his head. "I'm just worried... do you think the blinding one will escape? What would we do then?"
"You worry too much! It's been years, if Necrozma was able to break out, it would have broke out forever ago!"
"Perhaps you're right. But—"
"Dulse! Dulse! Over there! Look!"
Zossie took her hands off of Dulse and pointed towards a portal forming in mid-air. Dulse stiffened at the sight, before he instinctively stepped in front of Zossie. He held out an arm in front of her, bracing himself for whatever was about to come their way.
The portal began to open. Dulse's teeth clenched together, to the point where is jaw began to ache. He felt Zossie press against his back, peeking out from behind him. He promised himself to protect her, no matter what beast he would have to face.
But there was no beast. To his surprise, the portal only spat out a screaming little girl.
"What the—? Oh no! I'll catch you!"
"Zossie, wait!"
Zossie ran from behind Dulse with her arms wide open. She managed to catch the falling child, nearly tripping to the ground herself in the process. She gently lowered the girl back onto her feet, her face soft with concern.
"Are you okay?" Zossie asked.
The girl, Molly, nodded. "Yeah, yeah. I'm okay, at least I think I'm okay."
"Zossie! Get back! Get back! You don't know if that's a dangerous person or not!"
Dulse grabbed Zossie's arm and pulled her away from the child. Once again, he stepped in front of her protectively, glaring down at little Molly.
"Who are you?" Dulse asked.
"Me?" Molly scratched her head, flustered. She looked back and forth, and fell into complete awe of her surroundings. It was like nothing she had ever seen before. She felt as if she was just thrown into a science fiction movie, the architecture appeared almost alien. Then there were the two people in front of her, who were wearing strange helmets along with skin tight suits.
"Woah! Where am I?! This place looks so cool! And who are you guys? What's with the strange clothes?"
"Hey! You can't answer a question with more questions! I asked you who you were first!"
Dulse huffed as he shook his fist. Molly wasn't even bothered, nor did she even pay much mind to what Dulse was saying. Her attention was fixed on her surroundings, her jaw hanging open as she gawked at everything. She suddenly reached into her lab coat pocket and whipped out a cell phone.
"Man! I gotta record all this!"
"Are you even listening to me?!"
Molly began to film the setting with her phone, trying to capture everything she could. Afterward, she pointed the camera straight at Dulse's face, Zossie's head peeking out from behind his back.
"Sorry," Molly said. "Nobody would believe me if I told them I went to space, so I need to film it! So let's go ahead and have an interview! I ask some questions and you gotta answer!"
"You really aren't listening to me!" Dulse shook his head. "We aren't—"
"An interview? That sounds like so much fun!" Zossie pushed Dulse out of her way and leaped in front of the camera. She struck a pose with a smile.
Molly laughed. "You're a natural! So, here's my first question! Who are you? Why are you dressed like that? Why are you both so pale, you guys look almost blue!"
"That's three questions," Dulse said, crossing his arms. "And rude."
"Don't mind him! I'm Zossie, he's Dulse. We're members of the Ultra Recon Squad! We investigate Ultra Wormholes, Ultra Beasts, that kinda stuff! This is our uniform! It's specifically designed to allow for safe travel through wormholes! Though... we can't travel that far into Ultra space. Or... at all, really. We kinda suck at it."
"Zossie! Don't make us sound so pathetic!" Dulse turned away with a hint of blush on his face.
"So cool!" Molly's eyes sparkled, impressed regardless of Zossie's honesty.
"And uh... about that last question. We... don't get much sun. I've only seen people with skin as pink as yours in old pictures!" Zossie folded her hands together and tilted her head. "It's so weird... seeing someone like you just appear out of nowhere."
"No kidding," Dulse added.
"Well I guess that leads to another question. Why is it so dark here?" Molly asked.
"Necrozma stole our light," Zossie said.
"Necrozma? What's a Necrozma?"
"A beast like no other," Dulse answered. "Are we going to get to ask you some questions any time soon—?"
"A beast?" Molly asked. "Like an Ultra beast?"
Zossie nodded. "I guess you could say that, but it's like, a thousand times stronger! It plunged our world into darkness all because of its insatiable hunger! It's sealed away in that tower over there! It's imprisoned, so it can't go fleeing into other worlds to steal their light. Eternal darkness is something we wouldn't wish on anyone else."
"We're going to take back our light. We just need the strength of the Ultra Beasts... then we'll end it once and for all." Dulse's fists clenched tight. He spoke to himself, rather than to Zossie and Molly.
"Yip yup. We're planning to gather Ultra beasts from distant lands to beat up Necrozma! We've just got to master dimensional travel first! Once we do that, we'll be able to restore the light! That's all that really matters to me. Our superiors keep babbling on about using Necrozma's power for ourselves. I forgot why. Dulse, Dulse! You remember why, right?"
Zossie clutched onto Dulse's arm. The boy rolled his eyes, thinking of his bosses.
"They want to use Necrozma's dimensional traveling for something, I don't know. Doesn't matter to me. My priority is to bring back our light."
"So Necrozma can travel through dimensions... that's quite amazing." Molly looked up to the tower, raising her phone to record it.
"Like you just did?" Dulse asked. "Seriously, who and what are you—?"
"Necrozma can't just travel through Dimensions, that'd be the ultimate understatement! It could travel to incredibly far dimensions! It has the potential to travel amazing distances! It has an amazing power, it could reach the great depths of space and beyond. I'm sure it could go just about anywhere, even the ends of time!" Zossie clapped her hands together with a large grin. "It's awesome!"
"It's a demon!" Dulse shouted.
"Yeah! I mean it's evil and all, but it's also a really cool powerhouse!" Zossie cheered.
Dulse sighed as he shook and hung his head. "Oh Zossie..."
"...Welp, thank you guys! That should just about do." Molly stopped recording and slipped her phone back into her pocket. "Maybe Ozzy could use all this somehow..."
"Ozzy?" Zossie asked.
"Oh. It's a nickname for my boss!"
"Wait, wait, hold on. Enough nonsense, you owe us some explanations of your own." Dulse crossed his arms.
"Pi!"
Suddenly, there was a high pitched cry. In the corner of Molly's eye, she saw something purple and small dart straight towards her head. She leapt back, but the small creature kept zooming forward. It latched onto her face, laughing cheerfully.
"Pipipipipi! Pipipipipi!"
"Eep!"
Molly reached for her face and pulled the creature off of her. She was left holding the creature in her hands. It smiled as she looked down at its round face, waving its little arms in excitement.
"You're so... adorable!" Molly was instantly in love, losing herself within its blue, large glowing eyes. She twirled around while holding the creature up in the air. It continued to giggle a contagious giggle, Molly beginning to laugh herself.
"A Poipole?" Dulse muttered to himself. "Looks like a stray..."
"Awe! That Poipole really likes you!" Zossie chimed with a singsong voice.
"Hm? What did you call it? Piopole? Poipole?" Molly's face scrunched up with thought. "Hm... whatever! I'll just call it Pippie! You like that name, Pippie?"
"Poi!"
Poipole pulled itself out of Molly's hands and floated in the air. It cooed with happiness as it danced around Molly, spinning around her with the largest of smiles. Like a moth to a flame, Poipole found itself drawn to the girl. In an instant, the two could easily call each other friends.
"So cute! So cute! Wait, wait! Hold still! I need to pinch your cheeks!"
Molly caught Poipole mid-flight and pinched its little pink cheeks. Poipole continued to giggle with cheer, adoring the attention. Molly believed she might have just discovered the most adorable creature of all time.
"Ugh, we're never going to get anywhere with her." Dulse grumbled in defeat, before being caught off guard by a nearby sight. "Hey, little girl. Are you aware that your portal is closing?"
"Wait, w-what?"
Molly's head snapped back to see the portal she traveled through dwindling in size. Inch by inch, it quickly receded, and was doomed to dissipate into thin air. She didn't have time to even think. She had to move.
"I can't get stuck here! Um, b-bye now!"
Molly rushed to the portal before it was too late, and managed to leap through it. As soon as she was out of Poipole's sight, it already longed for her. Taking matters into its own hands, it zoomed through the air and straight into the portal. Seconds after Poipole dashed into the portal, the portal closed and vanished into thin air. Molly and Poipole were gone, leaving Zossie and Dulse standing alone.
"Uh. Dulse, do you think Poipole is going to be okay?"
"Dunno."
"Jolt! Jolt!"
"H-holy guacamole!"
Back at the Cosmos Cooperation, Jolteon searched the quiet building for assistance and dragged the first person it found into the laboratory. The first person that it found happened to be Daichi, who wasn't of much assistance at all. He walked in to see an unconscious man on the floor and a portal floating in the air, which was already very alarming. At the same time, a panicked Jolteon kept barking and whining at him.
"W-what am I supposed to do?! Do I look like a smart person to you?!"
"Jolt, jolt! Jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt jolt!"
"I seriously don't know what to do! Is it the glasses!? Do my glasses make me look smart or something?!"
Daichi argued with the panicking Pokémon, beginning to panic himself. The portal began to open, silencing them both. Before they could even begin to ponder what was happening, the portal spat out Molly, who was flung into the air.
"M-Molly?! Ah! I've got you! I've got you!"
Daichi ran forward to catch Molly in his arms. Instead, she crashed into him, causing them both to tumble to the ground. After Daichi fell flat, he was left with Molly sitting on his face.
"H-huh?"
"Oh, sorry, I was so excited I forgot you were here for a second! Chichi, meet Pippie! It's a friend I made in that other dimension!"
"Hold on..."
Daichi was still utterly lost, but Molly shifted her attention back to Poipole.
"I didn't expect you to follow me, Pippie! I'm so happy you did! I can show you Alola now, and my house too! You'll totally love it, you won't regret coming here for a single moment!"
Molly and Poipole were equally enthusiastic, already acting like the best of friends. Daichi came to understand that Poipole was of no immediate threat, but he still felt immensely concerned.
"Molly! I have no idea what's going on but... we've got to go tell the boss about this! Immediately!"
"...Tell the boss?" Molly paused. "...No! Not yet!"
Daichi blinked several times with a dumbfounded face. "What? Why not?"
"For Pippie's sake! It just got here! I don't want the other scientists to be poking and prodding at it, it'll stress the poor thing out! Especially Arc, I don't want him to lay a hand on Pippie! I'll tell OZone eventually... just keep it a secret for now, okie?"
"Wait, seriously? You serious?"
"If you don't keep this a secret... I think I might cry..."
"T-there isn't any need for tears! I'll keep my mouth shut, but I—!"
"Really? Awesome! I knew I could count on you, Chichi!"
Daichi went to protest, but before he could utter a word, Molly already had one foot out the door. Poipole was right behind her, bouncing up and down in the air.
"Thanks a bunch!" Molly said. "Oh, you should probably give Arc a hand! He's been unconscious for a while..."
With that, Molly and Poipole left the room, closing the door behind them. Daichi was left to figure out how to deal with Arc, who was still laying passed out on the floor.
"...Oh god! What do I do?!"
