Chapter 45: A School-fish Of a Tale To Tell!
Without ever of a doubt, it's been quite a while ever since Bob has challenged Verdant Caverns Island Trial against the loving and luscious dreamboat Ilima, but when there's a will with a belly full breakfast and Pokémon ready to kick some challenging butt, he was just all set to dent one of three Trials in which took place on Akala Island. The boat ride was rather peaceful despite having to share with other people. He leaned on the rails of the boat in the back, watching Melemele in the distance, over the miles of beautiful sparkling water in which reflects over the heating sun.
"Beautiful..."
He said to himself little before the ship has docked itself onto the port of Heahea City. Very much so, Heahea felt a lot like Hau'Oli City, so things didn't feel all so different to Bob, but that didn't stop him from taking these silly pictures like an over-excited dad on vacation with a flower pattern shirt with a straw hat on top. Rowlet looked around the city, also in search for the sight of the trail, Bob gently squeezed the head of the Pokémon, letting in on a thought he remembered.
"Not to worry Rowlet, Lana has told me it should be up north of Akala, right passed this western town just ahead. Let's get it!"
Passing by a field of Mudbray, Mareep, and Tauros, he passes an old fashioned fashion town observed in the movies, or... TV shows to be exact.
"Now I sell propane and propane accessories... If there are any problems, I'm gonna kick your ass! An oath to Hank Hill everybody..."
Passing by the town talking to himself, he had finally stumbled on the entrance of Brooklet Hill, a wonderland of ponds and a streaming river. standing on top of a wooden walkway, the one and only man behind the trial was Tides himself, who had his surfboard right beside him like always.
"Ahh! You must be one of the students from professor Kukui's class huh? Great to see you again!"
Tides waved as Bob approached him, Bob kept his hands in his pockets, as he nodded his head in the greetings sort of way.
"And you must be Captain Evil Smiling Crow, great to see you again!"
Bob jokes around, Tides also getting a hectic of laughter from his enjoyment of playing as a villain of that little act of theirs.
"Well, I suppose you could say that I tried to at least, STEAL the show!"
Bob, the joke-loving boy of the class gets another big hackle out of that, Tides simply bathed in the enjoyment that Bob was setting off of. Now that all jokes were out of the way, it was time for a little challenging fun! Tides had Bob follow him across the wooden walkway, as the two approached what looked like the beginning of a river. The sounds of the cool and clean water calmly splashing its water down Brooklet Hill really calm down any anxiety Bob had about facing this challenge. It's no wonder why Tides is always in a good mood, the relaxing sound of flowing water has made him a positive person, with a good smile.
"Alright, so here's how my Island Trial challenge works. You'll be taking a Lapras all the way down this river, and face the Totem Pokémon in which lives at the bottom of it. I would like to warn you that there will be a species of Pokémon that will hinder your journey. They may not look much alone, but let me say for the clear that they are surely something when working together."
Bob carefully takes in Tides warning and rules before climbing on top of the Lapras that awaited his company.
"Laaaaaaaa!"
"Let the Island Trial of Brooklet Hill begin!"
Lapras began swimming through the stream to the first drop of the hill, but before even reaching halfway, a small fish Pokémon dove right out of the water, which caught Bob off guard from swimming forward.
"First Wishiwashi of Brooklet Hill! You got this!"
The small Pokémon seemed quite familiar to the lad. Something was wrong until suddenly, it all made sense to Bob. If it wasn't for that Mantine surfing competition, he wouldn't have been able to identify the Pokémon according to Rotomdex right from the start.
"So the Totem Pokémon is that School-Form Wishiwashi! Haha! I get you on the ropes Tides!"
Bob turned to the boy when he was visible on land, and made a different face when he did.
"D'oh! You caught me red-handed Bob, I guess I couldn't hide the surprise until the very end! Good job!"
A pat on the back was well deserved. Not only he had cut the cords of any surprise that Tides might have had for this challenge, but he did feel like he was one step ahead of him, he quickly sends out Rowlet for some action.
"Alright Rowlet, this is our match of the trial, blow it away with your Leafage!"
Alright starting the battle strong, the small fish Pokémon flopped back from the water and quickly swam down the waterfall. Tides waved his arms to catch the boys attention.
"Not too Shabs Bob! Your next step of my trial is to follow Wishiwashi down the stream! More splashing surprises awaits you!"
Tides traveled down the stream through a grassy trail he takes when accompanying other trial goers, Bob pats Lapras on the back to see if it was all set to go. Rowlet stood in the back of Bob to keep an eye out for any Water Types that could be lurking under the water.
"Laaaaa!"
Splashing down, Bob held on tight only to be lightly splashed with the impact of the water from that, he wished he brought his swim trunks if it was to be a wild slip and slide ride of a trail. Bob wasn't amused by his shoes and pants soaked from the ride down, but Tides gets a whole kick out of it whenever he guides anyone for his trial.
"Sorry man, I probably should put a splash-zone warning for my challenge..."
"... Yeah, that would be nice."
Lifting his feet off and sitting higher up Lapras, he eyeball passed the crashing waterfall in search for the Wishiwashi he followed down, but it wasn't seen anywhere. Bob honestly had himself to blame, he lost track of the challenge due to the sensitivity he had over his dislike of water-log rides here and at the amusement parks. Sure its the concept to get soaked in these rides, but walking around all soggy in clothes that aren't cut out for things like that isn't Bob's rightful pleasure. He stays in the same spot in the water for a minute, while Tides on land finally caught the hold-up of the trip down.
"Lost sight of little ol' Wishiwashi huh? No worries! Just follow the blue and watery road!"
Using the guidance from the lad, he heads forth deeper within Brooklet Hill, the journey was going swimmingly until that is, the muggy layer of fog starts to cloud the vision for Bob, Lapras was doing just fine navigating through the river stream, the boy felt strange sailing through the river. He had the growing mind of feeling alone, lost at sea, on nothing but a damaged lifeboat that would crack within days. On the other hand, Rowlet experienced a more pleasant ride in the sail. The hollow sound of water and the faint sound of Pokémon in the distance intrigued it. A liking to its surroundings came short when a quick blast of water spews from the surface of the river and hits Rowlet with a fortunate matchup.
"Oh crap! Rowlet!"
In good condition, it hovers in the air in search of whatever may have attacked it so fast. Which turned out to be even more Wishiwashi from before, it was now time for battle.
"Back for seconds huh? Alright, Rowlet! Use Leafage!"
Whipping up a gusty wind of leaves, One Wishiwashi was blown right out of the water, while the one right next to it dove into the water. The thickening fog made things more difficult than they needed to be, Wishiwashi poked its head out of the water, slowly but vigorously swims up under Rowlet and lands a Feint Attack.
"U-use Peck!"
Now that the Pokémon exposed itself out of the water, Rowlet darts a powerful blow with its beak, which it scurries away to safety. Bob breathed in slight relief, the Lapras continues to sail through the fog, taking another trip down a waterfall, which Bob was lucky enough to be prepared for. It was good how these Wishiwashi didn't come out so much as a threat but did worry about Rowlet's current condition. It has taken several hits from the past couple of matches, he worried if Rowlet wasn't able to continue before standing upon the big Totem Pokémon that awaits him, he would have a problem, a major one.
Luckily, there wasn't any more Wishiwashi to face. The end of the stream was in arms reach, as Bob and Lapras stood on the surface of the water. Looking around, there wasn't much ground for any Pokémon which depend on it. The area of water was for Water and Flying-type Pokémon, and Rowlet is a little weary after a couple of matches beforehand.
"Hey, Bob! You've made it to the last hill of my challenge! Now all you have to do is face one more Wishiwashi!"
"Alright, not too bad... Here we go..."
Lapras slowly swims toward some interesting action going on in the water beneath them. Closer and closer it reached, the splashing grew rapid, it was then at a point where it wasn't just one, not even a group of them could make all at once. No, it was a school of Wishiwashi making that ruckus so wild, Lapras shuddered, the violent quacking of the waves too shook up Bob, the Pokémon rocket it's head out of the water, it was so gargantuan, it had to be at least twice as big compared to the School-Form Wishiwashi from the Mantine surfing competition.
"The real test starts... Now!"
Tides raised his hand as a sudden aura from the Pokémon surrounded it, which flared to life! It's now pumped for the Trial to begin!
"H-here we go Rowlet!... Use Leafage!"
Rowlet unleashes a leafy wind, which didn't hurt the beast as much as he wanted it to do. Instead of immediately attacking back, the Wishiwashi instead causes a ruckus in the water, flopping the surface of the water to offset Bob even more than he needed to be. Lapras was pushed back all the way back to the shore.
This was a total nightmare for the boy, he was short on his party with little options to make. Rowlet was partly drained, Houndour was a terrible matchup for Wishiwashi, and Hariyama couldn't swim. But Bob was desperate, he had little options to cope, so he had to bring the battle to the shore. He leaped off of Lapras which made Tides tilt his head on the boy's motivations. He took out a Pokéball, calling Rowlet back for a break.
Bob gives Rowlet a Sitrus Berry to restore its condition while it sat to rest. If Bob was going to face something as big as an enlarged School-form Wishiwashi, he was going to need a hand, a large one at that.
"Go Hariyama!"
A Pokéball was thrown in the air which sent out the biggest Pokémon on his team to battle the totem. It sees Bob escaped onto land, which it was currently rocketing its way to shore, it was now time to fight back, nowhere else to run.
"Alright you sea monster, its time to fight! Focus Blast!"
The Fighting-Type Pokémon charged up a blue sphere of concentrated energy which was launched like a cannonball, like a tale of a pirate ship trying to knock down a beast in which threatens everyone on it. The attack lands a massive burst right on the forehead, Wishiwashi turned back to retreat with a massive blow which took out some of its school that kept in place, but it wasn't backing down either, it fires back a gigantic blast of water, Hariyama impacts the attack with its large hands, only to be washed minutes later. The Pokémon gets back into the battle, but the totem seems to be moving forward as it did before, using the move Double-Edge to really end this trial, which meant was time to be a little bit risky...
"Use Ice Punch now!"
In terms of damage, both Pokémon had taken much damage, Hariyama alone from the attack, Wishiwashi mostly with the recoil its own, along with Bob's attack. The point of the use of Ice Punch on a Water Type is to freeze it in place for the opportunity to rack up damage. While it didn't freeze the entire Pokémon like a popsicle, it did freeze its left fin, keeping from retreating back into the water as fast as it wanted. NOW was the time to rack up some damage.
"Arm Thrust! Back to back!"
Multiple moves were made, while more and more Wishiwashi began to free, but Hariyama was right with an effective Aqua Tail before returning into the water, followed up by a Hydro Pump, knocking down Hariyama.
"G-good job Hariyama... Return... Rowlet, are you ready to resume?"
"Throo! Throo!"
Rowlet flapped its wings over the water to fight, Wishiwashi already resumes with a Hydro Pump, which Rowlet luckily dodges from tough aim.
"Leafage! Keep it up!"
Landing another hit on the Pokémon, Rowlet soared higher into the sky. Wishiwashi attempted to catch it itself by flopping in the air and chomp it from there. Its plan had work and trapped it in its large mouth, Bob at first panicked, but suddenly freed itself with a Grass Type move that didn't look like Leafage.
"What the heck?!..."
Escaping, a weird ball of light rockets high into the Alolan sky, finally stopping, what used to be Rowlet was no more.
"Aaaaaaye! Way to go, Bob! Your little partner of yours has evolved into a Dartrix! That move it just used is also Razor Leaf by the way!"
"What?! No way that's awesome!"
"Dar! Dar!"
The newly evolved Pokémon flew around the surface of the water while Wishiwashi still lurked in place, but it was time to make another move.
"Alright, Dartrix! Go nuts with Razor Leaf!"
Now shooting feather quills from its wings, Washiwashi took even more damage then what it had started with, it splashes into the air with the power of Double-Edge, but it was time to bust out the black Z-ring!
"This ends here fishy fishy! Full power Dartrix! Breakneck Blitz!"
With the physical power to rival Wishiwashi, Dartrix dives down to bust heads with the Totem Pokémon, despite its larger size, its fatigue cracks under the power of the Z-move, and goes straight through the enemy, Wishiwashi fell apart, and the school fled from any more harm. The fight was now over.
"We... We won..? We won! Dartrix! Victory is owers!"
Dartrix flew into Bob's open arms, as the two hugged from the hard-fought battle. Tides slowly clapped while approaching the two and smiled.
"You two nailed my challanged! Never have I seen anything go into the heart of WishiWashi's Double-Edge like that! And to think the move itself was a risk... But today, you surfed your way out of the belly of the beast, and to prove your achievement, I now reward you the Waterium-Z from the one who knows his water, me, Tides."
"Thanks, man. It wasn't easy to get this... Come Dartrix, it's getting late."
Leaving Brooklet Hill, Bob felt quite achieved that his partner now has evolved and he's been given a new Z-Crystal in his possession. He couldn't wait to show his friends his new crystal, but for now, it was time to get something to eat, kick back, relax, and watch some TV, until he turned it off and dozed right in bed.
