Chapter 40: To Beach, or not to Beach!
Perhaps arguably the hottest day in Alola scorches each island with a heatwave that's at least a 102-degree mark! Insane! The sizzling weather has brought pretty much 95% of Melemele Island onto Hau'Oli City's beach, but despite the packing nature, there seemed to be plenty of space for them all! Ash and his friends managed to find a spot near the volleyball courts near the water, but the food courts were at least a kilometer away but were totally worth the spot.
"Yaa-hoo! Time for a beach day! So many activities, so little time!"
Ash huffed his chest, plopping his backpack on the ground, his buddy Pikachu hanging on his shoulder ready for anything that was to come.
"Don't worry Ash! Our fantastic beach day only has begun! Come on and let's set up our spot!"
Mallow wipes off the sweat off her forehead, despite wearing a hat that was made for the roasting temperature, but it was pretty stylish. Everyone plopped down their towels on the hot sand, but Saki, on the other hand, stabbed an umbrella matching the 4 colors of a beachball right under her towel, and as much as it could reach the other girls.
"Big umbrella Saki, thank you so much for sharing with us."
Lillie bows in her thankful manner as she plopped herself and Snowy under its refreshing shade, Lucky rests within her hat, plopping out to peak right out from the sudden cool relief. Snowy wanted to cradle out of her motherly hold, but Lillie wasn't too comfortable on the idea of exposing it in the hot weather over one hundred degrees.
"No worries, it belongs to Samson. He was kind enough to lend it to us for the day. Swift the Seaking, and relax within the wind's Driftloon..."
The puns of, course, come from the Principle of the Pokémon School. She huffed with a sweatdrop. The more she repeats to quote after him, the more in voice she is. Right after Bob plopped a music player right on top of the blue cooler where the chilled beverages sat, feeling like they were young adults out for the break.
"Alright! Let's crack open a cool one and relax under the Alolan Sun!"
Before Bob could set the radio to a station, Ash grabbed his wrist and stepped him aside.
"Tsk Tsk Bob, I think I may have the jams that will crank this party to eleven! Here we go!"
Everyone but the boy had a sudden urge to stop him, for what Ash was known for was for his demeanor of not making the best decisions out there. With a few clicks of the station searching button, a certain song no one wanted to play out on the beach unless you had the guts to or no shame whatsoever.
"Let it gooo! Let it gooooo! Can't hold you back anymore!"
Ash was quite proud to play a song from fucken Radio Disney and even dare I say, dance to it. Of course, the song was interrupted by shooting the volume down before any eyes dart for them and to question their music. Kiawe had a blush that ran across his face.
"Asssssh! Why?? Why??? That's so embarrassing!"
"Don't act like you hate it Kiawe! It's a song that cools me down!"
Kiawe faced palmed and even thought about the countless of times his sister Mimo played the movie back when it was popular back in 2013. Lana's own sisters were slaves to the lyrics, but she as the caring sister she is couldn't help but sing along.
"I like that song to date Ash!"
"Thank you, Lana!"
Kiawe didn't want to ruin everyone's beach day from a song that probably shouldn't be played during a time out on the beach, so he selected a station that plays country music.
"What if I was made for yoooou? And you were made for meeeeee? What if this is it? What if it was meant to beee?"
The insufferable feeling inside Kiawe has vanished and sighed through relief, Ash puffed his cheeks and even muttered his dissatisfaction away from the radio, Sophocles grabbing onto his shoulder.
"Ahh ignore them and lay off the stress Ash, were at the beach! Come on and let's dive into that cold water!"
The two darted for the open water and slowly gotten in when their bodies adapt to the temperature, but Kiawe stayed back with a cold root beer on the blanket, tanning his skin maybe. Bob wanted to join in bad, but Lana grabbed his other wrist before he could.
"Bib! Bib! Wanna join me and Mallow for volleyball?"
The request only made the boy blush from playing a sport girls would rather play compared to boys, but still was a sport welcome to everyone!
"Well... I'm not best volleyball player out there and the balls hurt my hands... I'm into DJ-ing-"
He randomly throws in his uncommon interest as Lana pulls him in any way.
"No worries! We're gonna play with a beach ball!"
She sets the ball down, taking off her shirt and her pants, only to have her swimsuit under them. The sudden action pushed Bob into shutting his eyes close, thinking this was some kind of nude beach.
"Don't worry Bob, she's not naked, she always has her swimsuit under her regular clothes!"
Mallow took off her roomy beach dress, as she was in a tropical theme bikini, also making Bob keep his eyes closed. He's seen anime, if one boy would check out a girl when they're changing, they end up with a painful slap on their cheeks.
"Sounds... Uncomfortable..."
All he could mutter, Lillie too was undressed in her own swimsuit, ready to play volleyball with the others.
"All set! It's gonna be me and Lillie, against you two! Don't be shy Bob and play with us!"
"I'm not shy Mallow, it sounds super wrong the way you put it! It makes me... Concerned..."
Bob kept his swimming shirt on, Lana was about to serve the ball.
"Let's show them what we're made of Bib!"
A couple of matches passed by, the boy and girl won only by 2 points, Lillie was out of breath and Mallow could barely keep up any more moving. The past two hours had the girls and the one boy making sand castles, the boys still in the water, and Kiawe clinking a new can of Coca-Cola with Saki, as they sip under the shade of the umbrella.
It seemed like nothing could ever ruin their perfect day at the beach, seem being the key word here. Never say never unless you are quite sure of yourself. The big, bad, and pink snack truck just arrives at the beach, unloading whatever they had for the big rush.
"Todays a new day guys, the day we snag ourselves the twerps Pokémon!"
The three mischievously snicker, coming up with an all-new plan that the kids won't see coming.
"This time, we will not be the ones who serve any of our delicious treats... This time we will begin operation blue surf!"
With a quick change to more beach-comfortable clothing, Team Rocket was also on the idea of blending into the crowd, not as a patron, but going out as illegal lifeguards on duty. For two grown-ups and a cat Pokémon whose been on the job for more than 20 years in the prior, they actually didn't look half bad.
"Once we get close enough to Pikachu, we'll spring our inescapable cage on it! A more perfect plan if I say so myself."
Jessie chuckles, being accompanied by the two hanging on her shoulders, searching for the class in the sea of people who also enjoy the beach day. The hunt for the kids didn't last too long, as a random bystander rushes to the three, in sudden and in need.
"Lifeguards! Lifeguards! Thank goodness I found you three! That guy hit a rock from the wave and sprained himself! He needs medical help!"
The jumpy boy urges the fake undercover lifeguards to save him immediately, but James and Meowth hesitated to respond. Jessie took a quick look at her binoculars to make the minimum effort to look like what they're trying to impersonate. From an uncaring Jessie one minute hearing about a life in jeopardy, she now grabs her red equipment ready to save a handsome young man who may be single. With a powerful blow from her whistle, all those around her turn towards her direction.
"Make way for the local lifeguard! We have a life at risk! Move immediately!"
Jessie heroically trails through the people who followed her order of evacuation, springing herself to do her job in a weird way.
"You hear 'er James! You gotta help her too! You'll blow our cover!"
"ALright! Alright! Let's go then!"
Diving into the warm water, the two catch up to Jessie in a matter of seconds, descending themselves from the distance of the beach towards the drowning citizen, which didn't take as long, as they safely secure the young man on the body board, and pulled him to shore. A rare job is done well by the no good crooks, everyone cheering for the three's heroic deed.
"I... I thought I was a goner... Thank you so much for rescuing me!"
The young man smiled, specifically towards Jessie, who couldn't help keep a blush away even if she tried. One of the reasons being that she didn't get many compliments growing up.
"T-thank you, but it's honestly all part of the job."
At this point, Jessie was left all alone with this young man because James and Meowth went to go call for the paramedics escort the man to a hospital for a check up on his wound.
"I do get you were just doing your job, I really do, but please hear me out! L-let me at least buy you a drink or some food if you'd like...!"
Now Jessie at this point blushed like mad, but she had to keep a straight face under her shades. Nonetheless accepting it, thinking they won't see each other after this mission.
"S-Sure... Whatever... The name is... Jessilina..."
Using a name she hadn't used for almost 10 years, the young man smiled a cool look to the name.
"Huh... Jessilina is a fitting name... My name is Mateo, and I-"
Before he could tell anything about himself, the paramedics had soon arrived to pick him up.
"What a bummer, they're already here... Well, I hope we meet up sometime! L-let's meet back on the beach when we do!"
From there, Mateo was now within his transportation and drove off with those paramedics, Meowth, and James looking at Jessie, asking her about their priorities towards the kids.
"Now with that over, let us find the twerps and snatch their Pokémon!"
From the whole lived episode she just lived through, she all of a sudden wasn't in the mood to resume the mission.
"Actually there's just too much wrong on this beach, and I'm going to make sure all is okay! There's garbage on the floor, children playing under unsafe circumstances and too many people to leave unattended! Come one! We have a job to do!"
Something was up, thought to the boys, but rather than fighting or even to convince her otherwise, they simply joined her, now the time for their good deeds. running through the swash zone of the beach, the three zoomed through the direction at the snack bars, they were slow, but damn did they look good...
A couple more hours passed and the temperature outside barely drops a few degrees. You couldn't tell the difference between the number of people at noon and now, because hardly any people left. Most of the beachgoers kept their spot, patiently waiting for the Mantine surfing competition forms to open any minute. Once it did, over twenty people signed up on the first five minutes, including the class wanting a piece of the action... Except Lillie whos gonna cheer them on from the warm sand. Everything seems to be going smoothly until a Jeep that was made for the beach pulls up on the parking lot, stepping out was a man in great shape, volume, and complete with a surfers hairdo.
"Fucken appointments. They shouldn't keep me waiting all damn day for a checkup."
The man walks towards the Mantine surfing stand, somehow scaring the other applicants away as if he was a man with the power to ban anyone from the city. The Pokémon that sat on his shoulder quacked randomly, but its owner didn't mind.
"I know Ducklett, another year, another Mantine race to win."
Finally filling out a form, the man was ready to go, he finds a nice spot despite the limited space in the sand, and relaxes under the sunlight, only to be interrupted by the local beach babes.
"Cypher! We thought you weren't gonna make it!"
"Oh my gosh! Is that a new pair of shades?? They look fabulous on you!"
Cypher must be a beach legend to have girls circle around you like a newborn child, about to speak its first words. Speaking about his annual victories, Cypher did not lift his head up to the chirping girls, instead, he resumes his tan, and spoke as if he was talking to himself, or Ducklett.
"No worries, I'm back. I would never pass up the perfect beach day. And these aren't anything new."
Hearing that voice only made the girls sigh in a flirtatious way, wanting more of it.
A half an hour later, everyone who signed up for the competition has been assigned a Mantine, a large obstacle course filled with Water-Type Pokémon was about to start. Anna, the Alola Region's hostess about to call the start of the race.
"Welcome! Welcome, all! To our annual Melemele Mantine surfing contest! All of this year's competition will be diving into a world out on the sea! The very first one to cross the finish line across the marked boat is the winner!"
Everyone on the beach clapped for the contestants, who all actually have quite the rave going on in each one of them. The rest were ready to rock, to say the least.
"On your marks! Get set... Go!"
The race has officially begun, the starting gun alarmed all the racers as they zoomed through the shore, into deeper waters as they go! But not all the racers had a good start. A few contestants have already been wiped out from the failure to keep a maintain balance.
"Ouch! It seems that we already have a few people who just haven't earned their sea legs yet!"
For those who don't know, if someone was to fall over from the Mantine in any condition, it would mean they're out from the competition for good! Even Sophocles couldn't handle the starting dash.
"Ehh... This wasn't really my thing anyway..."
The race has just begun, about seventeen racers remained within the game, the very first obstacle was quite the windy one. A light gusty wind coming from a horde of Wingull belonging to the event committee flapped their wings to create a wind to offset the upcoming racers. It wasn't a harsh wind, but unsurprisingly an effective one. Since most of the racers are made of people who seek a fun time, one by one, they fall into the warm ocean.
"Aww dang it! I thought I had that!"
Bob flopped over through the wind, spitting out any seawater he accidentally entered his mouth. Mallow and Kiawe were also victims of the 1st obstacle crisis.
"Phooey! I'm out as well..."
"No biggie lets head back to the shore."
With at least eleven more racers left in the game, Ash, Saki, Lana, and this Cypher man surfed through the sparkling sea. The second obstacle approaches, one that raises the difficulty a smidge. A field of Magikarp, splashing in the water creating a massive obstacle course for the leftover participants who've made it this far. These Magikarp served to either push the contestants off balance or to wreck Mantine's own balance, throwing them off as well. Ash, Saki, and many more of the contestants were afflicted by this cause. Lana, on the other hand, was almost one with her Mantine she was lent to. She dodged and kept balance on Mantine at the same time. Something tells her friends that she must've experienced this sort of thing since she was Haper and Sarah's age.
"Look at the last five go! They have almost reached the final course! Whoever reaches the finish line without knocking over wins!"
The last five contestants resumed their path to the visible finish line hung by two boats at the same, another Pokémon, the size at least of a submarine, dove right out of the water as what a Wailord might do.
"Oh my! That'zzzzz a Wishiwashi! And it looks like it'zzzz in itzzzzz School form!"
Rotom hovers closer to a large screen that currently captures the competition up close all done by a camera.
"Wishiwashi? School form...?"
Ash couldn't help but scratch his head, Rotom recording the Pokémon's data, along with what an individual Wishiwashi would look like.
"Wishiwashi, Solo-form. The Small Fry Pokémon, a Water Type. When it's in trouble, its eyes moisten and begin to shine. The shining light attracts its comrades, and they stand together against their enemies."
"Wishiwashi, School-form. A Water Type. Wishiwashi assemble in this formation to face off against strong foes. It boasts a strength that earned it the name "demon of the sea."
Rotomdex explains both variations of Wishiwashi to everyone in the class, Bob seemed very intrigued by a Pokémon with the title, "demon of the sea."
"Interesting..."
Bob says to himself, taking a close note on the actions of the large formation Pokémon. Already the last three contestants were wiped out from the massive waves Wishiwashi had created. Lana and Cypher struggled through the power of this gigantic force, they both knew that they shouldn't avoid the waves like the other three attempted to do. They both come to know to ride these waves, or else they would end up in defeat.
The two were neck and neck, both rode the waves like true surfers. The finish line right in front of them. While Cypher crossed the finish line first, his cocky demeanor cost him the race, he and his Ducklett tripped over and splashed onto the sea. Lana remained on the Mantine as she crosses the finish line.
"The winner of this year's annual Mantine surfing competition is Lana! Let's give a big round of applause for this year's winner!"
Everyone clapped madly for a young girl able to best a surfer whos known for his years in Mantine surfing. Cypher, on the other hand, was hiddenly upset of losing to a girl still in school, but he appreciated the challenge, to say the least without sounding like a pure sore loser. Lana was awarded a big trophy for her outstanding performance, and even won herself a Pokémon named Mantyke, the pre-evolved form of Mantine.
"What a cute one you are Mantyke! I bet you're gonna be good friends with Popplio!"
"Tyke! Tyke-Tyke!"
