Chapter 36: The Way of Akala!
After a fun day at the beach with friends, the sun was letting them know that they should be packing up for the day. The horizon dimmed the light, everyone already heading out.
"By guys! I outta get home before my parents worry."
Sophocles waved, Mallow walking with him.
"So do I! I can't upset my dad after all he's done for me!"
So that was two down already.
"By everyone! I got a fishing show to watch with my little sisters!"
Lana waves, as she seemed to be in a rush since she seemed to run towards her own home on the beach itself.
"I must get going too. I hope I can make it before it becomes completely dark... C-can you walk me home Saki...?"
Lillie with her hands behind her back asked Saki, she shrugs her shoulders with a grin on her face.
"Sure. What are friends for?"
"Yeah! Take me along too! Maybe that Torracat charm will rub off on my own Litten!"
Ash joins the two, while Saki couldn't help but roll her eyes in a friend way.
"Whatever you say Ash."
The only two being Bob and Kiawe, it seems like he didn't have any plans nor his cousin was as time checking as the rest of the parents.
"You wanna come over and watch some High School Spirit Kiawe?"
He ask as if he hasn't gotten a lot of friend time that day, but Kiawe shook his head. He already had plans of his own.
"Sorry Bob. I have to get home. I can't be late for dinner, because I'm actually expecting... An acquaintance."
Kiawe hops onto his ride Pokémon Charizard, but the fact Kiawe said "acquaintance" alone didn't sit so much for a convincing statement to Bob. He rubbed his nose from the musty air of the ocean, and asked,
"An acquaintance huh? Oh I get it!"
The boy starts to act smug in his own words.
"I bet your late for a date Kiawe! That's it! I totally understand, you need to get ready for the main event. Turn on the lights and smoke machine because we have our first contender for a date! Don't miss your chance! Tickets now on sale at..."
Blabbering like a kid on the sea to only himself and pretty much Kiawe, he didn't mind and even acted like his last shreds of dignity wore thin years ago... Kiawe could easily take his gestures and yelling with a grain of sand he stood on, but in other terms, he cheeks flared.
"As if. I'll see you at school tomorrow..."
Before Bob could get any more deets from the boy, he flew high in the sky, Charizard flew across the sea to where he lives, not home of those no good Team Skull maniacs, but on a beautiful Island named Akala! An island where the most tourists gather for the active volcano, Wela Volcano Park. There lies a myth that a Groudon was born within the mighty landscape, and erupted under the ground, creating the entire island itself! But of course, it's a tale yet to be proven otherwise.
You'd think a fired up boy would live in near that said volcano, but that would be considered dangerous. Where he actually lives is a place you wouldn't have considered. A place where old fashion labor was the key to character building. Paniola Town! The environment seems as if it has taken inspiration from western civilization, as the town very much so looks like an oasis of buildings in yours truly. And if it doesn't get any more hotter than that, Kiawe is a farmer in the ranch. Born and raised!
Charizard sets off onto its landing spot as Kiawe climbs off of it, breathing in the dirt and hay he sees. He walks towards his home, watching the Milktank and Mudbray stroll around the farmland and smile.
"You said it Dorothy, there's no place like home."
He opens the door and is already squeezed barely having the time to say, "Hi mom, dad."
"Big brother! Where have you been?! You had us all worried!"
His little sister Mimo store at him with her ironic ocean blue eyes at the boy, who takes a knee to her height.
"Mimo. First things first, I am not late. Two, you don't have to worry about me. Three, please don't make this meal a big deal."
"That rhymes big brother!"
"Sure, let's go with that."
Walking into the living room, where his dad, who looks like he should be living within the city, watches a news story about a car crash from drunk driving.
"Oh, hiya son. Hope your hungry. The misses is making a delicious dinner meal for us and our special guest!"
Kiawe tried to act cool while letting off his day on the couch, but with his chin resting on his wrist. He looks away from the TV, staring at the wall of a few family portraits.
"I'm starving dad. Thank you."
The man noticed Kiawe was off in a way, so he couldn't help himself and made sure to ask if there was anything bothering him. You wouldn't believe the answer coming from someone as cool as Kiawe. He says,
"Just a long day is all. I really like my classmates, but the guys want to me to be in this musical where the girls write the songs for us. I don't even know if we'll get another lucky break from that play not so long ago..."
He fakes a sigh, hoping his dad would take the bait avoiding what's really up with him.
"Why not? I really did like your play son! Who wouldn't want to see a Pokémon done revised in ancient Kanto? It adds up!"
Before his dad could get any more higher than standing up from his seat, There was a knock on the door. Kiawes mom, a gorgeous lady sautéing one hell of a dish pokes her head into the living room.
"I think that's the door calling for you Kiawe."
Zipping back into the kitchen, Kiawe stood up and took a deep breath, he walked as he always had and opened the door, a young lady who may not be as tall him, but is somewhere there and as old as him stood with a face that she isn't impressed with anything about the boy.
"Kiawe. It's been a while."
Her eyes glared with the kind of flare that could easily scare off the weakest of boys, but Kiawe was no stranger to that look. He wanted to flop back, but knew he had to man this one out and to invite her inside. It's not that he hated this long seen girl, but it's what happened over the past two months is what divides the two into loose friends.
"Ahh, Blaze. Welcome back. It's great to see you after all this time."
Kiawe's mother finishes setting up the table and placing dinner as well. The girl Blaze bows her head in her manner of being invited in the first place.
"Thank you so much for having me over."
Now that dinner is just about done, all that was left is to purposely eat. The first three minutes involved watching the local news on Akala Island. Nothing mind blowing was going on, just about a new library opening in Heahea City, and a quick recap from last years Mantine surfing contest with highlights to hype up this years upcoming event. But the silence was finally broken by Kiawe himself.
He knew he had to break the awkward ice on the heater forcefield that kept him and Blaze apart, so he spoke.
"So Blaze, I heard you've recently became one of three Island Trial Captains on Akala... Good job."
All he could muster, he thought he lacked, but it was worth a shot. Blaze finished chewing on the sautéd mushrooms and asparagus before she spoke.
"Well, I'm not finished completing the process before I could start directing trial goers just yet, but I do appreciate your mind keeping up the times."
Her eyes attempted to lock with the boy, but all he did was a blink to the eye, more like a flicker, she store at her plate, continuously feeding herself. Back to square one Kiawe thought, that is until his dad spoke.
"I've been wondering how all that development worked Blaze. Do you as a captain come up with a Trial?"
Blaze looks up to the helpful dad, she felt as it she could talk to him easier behind those glasses of his. So no emotional barriers had gotten in the way.
"Actually, what happens is that the Island Kahuna of Akala marks a map of all the possible locations for Trial sites, and once you have chosen, it's the process of the test itself."
Mimo couldn't help to get in on this interesting subject matter of Alola's trials.
"What did you decide to do Blaze? Are you gonna make them do the unthinkable??"
Blaze knew Mimo, and she did not want to know what she considers, "unthinkable" so she looked pass that, filling in on what she planned to do.
"Well, as someone who moves to fan the flames of the soul, I consider my trial to wake up that soul from within! You have to show me what you really plan to bring to me."
Kiawe looked up to Blaze, something going on within each other's mind, one involved slow dancing, and the other with a glare that hurts just by looking at it.
"My my, you have quite the set Blaze. Would it be any trouble if you show Kiawe a peek at your new responsibility?"
"Why not Blaze? It's been forever since you have had some time alone."
His parents at this point felt like they were just asking her to take Kiawe on a date. Kiawe blushes, he tried to prevent so while keeping anyone from knowing, but Blaze already beat him to it, she blushed, but she did consider their request.
"One person wouldn't hurt me just to show, I would be happy to take him."
In a way, she would like to take Kiawe on this "date". Of course she defended herself to act as if she wasn't into this boy.
"I-I just want to catch up, that's all. It wouldn't be of me to refuse so."
After that, the dinner table went quite, Kiawe keeping in mind the task that's been brought up to him, he mentally prepared himself for anything that Blaze could throw at him the next day when she came to pick him up. And then off they went.
The trail they took connected from town that will be covered quite soon, the two quietly walked. Kiawe felt a nice sense of warmth that came from the son, being in the same source that helps power up his Pokémon Turtonator in battle. But once they reached their destination, that sense of fire kinda weakened, from the ridiculousness that is yet to come.
"Now then Kiawe, my challenge will set here, right next to Akala's magnificent volcano! There will be speakers, there will be music, there will be lights, there will be spiritual movement to burn your Z-rings even hotter than they currently are!"
Blaze spun and stands a cute position in the ballet dress she wears casually. Kiawe blushed, the position of herself was flurrying him, but he had to stay calm.
"Uhh... What exactly do you plan to do here...?"
"Simple Kiawe, you must show me your flames and face through several Fire Type Pokémon, and show absolute talent dancing with yours truly!"
Blaze at this point puffing her hair for no apparent reason other than to tell herself she's pretty, Kiawe nodded now hearing the full story on her plan.
"Shall we then?"
He asked, stopping her tracks and strait up confused.
"Ehh, shall we what?..."
"Shall we have a dance then? All-mighty one?"
Of course, Blazes one cheeks burn up, and looks away, baffling in a thundering manner, away from the boy, kinda foolish.
"T-There's no reason to Kiawe! You've already done your trial! Why would you want to do it again??"
She defends, but to his own surprise, his eyebrow raised up, she starting to uproar from what she does best.
"Wouldn't hurt to lift my spirits with a traditional dance Blaze. Unless you don't want to, I completely understand."
"N-No! Fine. B-but we need music... I can't fan the flames without music..."
Taking out his cell phone, Kiawe dig through his library of songs to find something that would be worth a dance, and when that song is chosen, the two locked into hands and start to go.
Step by step, the two rather took off quite well. Kiawe slipped up ever now and again because he's rusty, only learning the moves his dad taught him and watched the Pokémon School's prom tape of his parents having the time of their lives, and Blaze messes up from sheer feelings. Kiawe, the boy who've she known for a long time, hand in hand with a body hot as coal, she blushed and looks away from direct contact.
"Your not the best dancer Kiawe, but you certainly know more than I expected."
"Thanks... They don't call me the Big Cheese for nothing."
"Wait what?"
"It's a thing one of my friends Ash keeps saying, guess that's lame isn't it?"
The song continues to play, the audio of the phone speaker amps it's best, portraying a tune that would sound indeed better on a speaker.
"Tu vuo' fa' ll'americano
Mericano, mericano!"
"Tu vuo' fa' ll'americano
Mericano, mericano!"
The song finally stops, the two took a small break from the dancing, feeling a firm sense of accomplishment, Kiawe smiles that he actually enjoyed the moment they had together.
"Kinda like back in the old days, huh Kiawe?"
"Yes, without physical contact of course."
Blaze giggles, standing up to the direction of a sound coming from the entrance of the trail to Wela Volcano. A Pokémon leaps out a dramatic entrance, a Marowak, waving its bone in greetings.
"Maro! Maro!"
"Oh, hey Marowak."
Blaze pets the skull of the Pokémon, despite being a sensitive part of its body, Marowak didn't seem to mind, even enjoying it. Kiawe looks with a sudden interest tagging along with Blaze.
"Marowak huh? I've heard of these Pokémon. It's Alolan form only comes to mind, it's normal form is a bit fuzzy in my mind."
Blaze wasn't gonna lie, she couldn't even confidently picture what a normal Marowak looked like, but did come up with something.
"You're right, Kiawe. But that doesn't mean I of despise you know. I find this one true to me."
She smiled as Marowak raised its bone in the air. Kiawe has a smile on his face, but Blaze did not. In fact, she didn't because she was lost in thought.
"Kiawe... Being a Captain has filled me in on some news not all commoners do realize... Alola is a very unique Island... Walking its own path which differs from the rest. But the Kahunas have told me that we will be getting a Pokémon League here soon."
She spoke of silence, which a Kiawe gasped to the sudden surprise. Even surprising Marowak to say the least. Watching the crazy competition all over the world through cable, the Pokémon League was something only the strong willed would accept the honors of challenging the best of the best.
"We are huh? That sounds like an honor honestly..."
"Kiawe... You're gonna need all the strength you will need. I ask of you... To-take Marowak with you.
"What? Why?"
"Kiawe Please! You're gonna need more than Turtonator to stand up against your opponents... So please. Strengthen Marowak and let you guide its strength to victory!"
Kiawe and Marowak stood at one another's appearances, locking eyes to really know that if they are willing to work together to face off in the new subject of the Pokémon League, together, they shook on it. Kiawe took out a Pokéball which calls Marowak, joining him on his quest.
"Thanks Blaze, this means a lot to me."
"Thank you to Kiawe... I-I never had a good dance with someone else in a long time..."
And with that, they finally hugged as the sun began to set.
