Chapter 34: The Pounding Drum of the Grand Trial!
The walk home was silent back from the rusty stack of old wood that still remains from toppling down like Jenga blocks. Everyone had their own "phase" of disbelief, dread, and unknowing horror that played through their minds like a very old movie project from the first years it was born in the 1930s. little words were spoken that night, whenever someone sneezed, one of the boys inexplicably said, "Bless you." After experiencing the paranormal activity. No one went to bed until 1 in the morning from the dramatizing horror of jump scares and noises within such a meek and utter filthy setting. But the one who was all flushed was Bob.
The poor boy felt like he was gonna hurl everything he had consumed that day, but it just wouldn't come out. The feeling after eating way too many cookies, the delights at war with food that wouldn't sit quite well with your dinner, he felt nauseous from overwhelming feelings and quick acts. First finding out that Lana, the same girl who now knows that she has a crush on him, and this new snickering jolly girl snipped him with a date. By the time he did fall asleep, he already summed up a dream of the two girls, with a certain glare in their eyes.
"Bibby Boo has known me more than you have, you don't stand much against our chances as boyfriend and girlfriend!"
Lana huffs a comment, in the hope Acerola would back down, but she wasn't hesitant.
"If that's so my friend, then why didn't he stop me when I made the first move on him! We're gonna do everything on this small date! Dinner, dancing, karaoke, Bobby is going to do that while he hands me a purple rose grown in the moonlight!"
"Bibby Boo is going to give me a bouquet of blue roses in the day on the beach-,"
And from there, something Bob has witnessed what he never could have imagined in that dream, girls arguing over him. He sure felt overwhelmed after his slumber, the whole thing still played through his head. The day has passed as the sun began to set, everyone gathered for a late lunch on a nice breeze hill, with some loaded egg salad sandwiches and bread crumbs on the class's faces.
"You should've heard what Len was screaming about on that sleepover! It was hysterical even if I wasn't any better!"
Ash, who has gotten over the frightful encounter of Ghost Pokémon pretty quickly while patting both Sophocles and Kiawe on the back, taking a massive chomp of his sandwich.
"Sure was something... But to think... It was just a prank all along... I don't think I even want to consider if all of that wasn't a dream..."
Kiawe looks down on his own plate, Sophocles had a similar feeling, and shook off an eerie chill that hasn't left yet.
"Yeah well... I wasn't-No I was scared... I gotta knock off that act, I'm better than that..."
The boys were quite talkative about the whole sleepover, while the girls even had their own subject on the picnic table.
"So what if I lost my battle with Kahuna Hala? I'm not gonna sulk about something that I'll be trying sometime. Consider me good, I can promise you all that."
Saki wiping her mouth with a napkin, while Mallow right next to her gave her a spirit-raising smile, the man she just knows how to work'it!
"That's fantastic news Saki! You outta show him that you've grown the next time you battle him! I and the gals will be right behind you! Right, Ash?"
"Yeah! But wait! Wait! Wait!... You didn't specify me as a girl did you?"
Everyone but the target of the joke had a good chuckle, while Bob wasn't his obnoxious self, the comments from the other day still lingered in his mind as if they were to have some gnawing effect that will soon return and stick around for the worst. He was seen at the table just poking his sandwich while thinking of the things he heard. Such as,
"That Bob, he just doesn't realize how lucky he is yet. I might just have to... you know... poke him in the right direction. He needs to just ask you out already! He can't just keep you waiting around,"
"No take-backs! We'll decide the date and time later. For now, I need to give your friends a hand! I'll be back, Bobbie!"
Lillie couldn't help the boy's absent appetite, so she commented on his current eating habit.
"Oh... Bob? You haven't even touched your egg salad yet... Are you feeling okay by any chance...?"
She peeped, as the boy didn't even look up, he was afraid, afraid to look because of all the glittery eyes of the girls to watch his awkward moves, he squirms.
"Peachy Lillie. Apricot. Pear. Corn. You know, I love myself some corn, but I cannot have any corn because I sadly am not in the mood. For any corn."
He mindlessly quotes, Lillie and Lana lost in thought of what had caused him to spill such nonsense, but Mallow had may have an idea. She poked her head, making sure first that he wasn't pressuring him or anything, but to make sure if he was really under the floorboard because of the whole gag that turned the gun around and shot him. The look and teeth twitching were indeed a sign that this was the case. Mallow decided to take the matching-making move and put it into move quite earlier than she would like to.
But before she could even say anything, Lana finished her sandwich and giggled at his nonsensical comment.
"So silly Bob! I wouldn't be surprised if you wrote poems for a living!"
She paused for a second, Bob tried to fix the crack into the awkwardness that kinda dangled in the air between himself and the concerning girls and our glittery eyes. With a rumbling stomach and a tingling mouth, he didn't even know what to say after that.
"Well... That's probably because I have my ways... Around words... and a piece of paper... Perhaps I could make you a poem sometime soon.."
Lana had a small blush to her wash and smiled back, Popplio lightened to its trainer's reaction for something sweet of Bob to do.
"I would love that so! Thank you!"
She hugged him, her wrap-around help felt as if he needed to burp, but didn't have the necessary gas to do so. He was flared up to the cheeks and softly hugged back.
"Yeah, Lana. I don't know about sweet..."
He tries to pass it on as no big deal, but Mallow wouldn't let him through on that, so she comforted Lana by complimenting Bob.
"Don't say that Bob! It's really sweet of you to write a poem for a girl! I hope it's a really juicy one for her!"
At this point, Bob could hurl from inexperience. He just didn't know what to do here. He didn't know what to say. He didn't know how to act. After everyone went home, Bob turns to the only other person with dating experience. Cousin Ernesto. He and his Herdier Tyrone were rehearsing his next single on his first album titled, "Man's best friend. Echo of da homies yo." Ernesto tries to be spitting some bars while Herdier tries to be rolling it off with a sick beat.
For the most part, Herdier and its long-practiced beatboxing actually impressed the passing guests of the hotel Bob stayed at, but Ernesto's freestyle wasn't all so impressive.
"Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank!"
"I be working their hours! I be hitting the next rank!"
After his 2nd take, Bob sat down with the man, hoping he could give him any advice about this.
"So next thing I know, is that I know one girl who isn't afraid to get close to me and another who I just met who already wants to go on a date with me. Who does that cousin Ernesto??"
The man could tell how flustered and tense he was, after the day of the sleepover to now have been, or ever since he started talking to Lana for the most part. But he remained cool.
"Perhaps the new girl just wants to hang out with you cousin Bob. From what you told me, she does sound like a bum."
"Well, that's a hell of a way to put it cousin Ernesto."
"I'm just saying. Would you really think after meeting each other one day, the next she unzips your pants and-"
"Oh, Arceus! Stop stop stop!"
"It's logic cousin Bob, all normal school-cliche logic. Give Lana a chance, she seems awfully proud of herself, so she can't lie. Take a hike and think of what your mind and heart desire."
Taking the advice from someone who had pure wisdom right next to Yoda, Bob strolled on the same trail to Ike town, but instead makes a right, downing in foresight of the two girls bickering for Bob's attention, until walking into a tree.
"Ouch! Damn it! Why am I approaching this so poorly?... They're just girls!"
He turns around talking to himself but stood in front of a stone temple. One that looks like it just rose out of the ground right under the grass. With nothing else taking his attention, he looks within the empty building, the moonlight lighting up the entire room, so clear that one can even see the dust and particles floating around. A pedestal stood in the room, carvings of cosmic creatures also stood. What was super strange is that the angle of the light suddenly fixed itself, pointing to the said beings. Bob flinched, wondering if he was being messed with. He didn't want to step in any closer, the closest he was willing to go was simply by the entrance, the fade step he took ignoring his own caution, he took a step closer, it was as if small sounds could be heard. But for all he knows, it could just be small Pokémon clinging onto the dark corners in which the light didn't shine upon. But... He didn't feel as if he was being watched, but as if something was indeed calling him.
"Pew... Pew... Peww..."
Small echoing sounds could be heard if Bob could hold his breath, the moonlight dimmed to the small carvings of those in the shape of clouds, they were as if... Calling for him. Gently, he reached out for the small carvings, and lightly placed his hands on the two fluff balls, which both of them startled the Trainer, he suddenly heard a squeak.
"Pew pew!"
Bob jumped and ran out of the temple as fast as he could, he trips over a root of a tree, he tumbled onto the ground, catching his breath and then starting to question whatever was trying to... Communicate with him.
"That. That can't be real... I've been watching way too much TV to believe any of that was real..."
Brushing himself off from the impact, he heard a voice he knew was in his presence.
"What may be nonexistent Bob?"
He turned around, Kahuna Hala walking the trail to Ike town.
"Oh, Hello Hala. I just ran into some crazy shit... Like majorly weird... I'm dizzy just from thinking about it! There were these voices to of that of p-popcorn, or those laser guns from Star Wars and-"
Hala looked at the boy, not in the way as if Bob was a loon, but in an interesting point of view.
"Well then, you don't suppose you've been wandering at the ol'temple now did you?"
Bob paused when Hala cut his rambling, he didn't want to admit so, because he was worried if that would get him in trouble. No point in lying his way out so owned up and nodded without making eye contact, but Hala didn't seem to care in the way.
"No damage done son. Thank you for your honesty. Let me tell you something about your hearing, with a nice steaming malasada, on me."
Hala invites the boy to his place, where they had a nice puffy treat as if it came right out of the oven. Bob felt a bit more relief now that he had something warm run down his throat, so he thanked him.
"It's my pleasure. You should be lucky though that my grandson isn't home right now. He just can't say no to a fresh malasada whenever he sees one."
"Oh yeah... Isn't he the one who beat Saki on the day of the festival?"
"Correct. He's improving just like you and your friends."
Hala smiles, the two enjoying the treat while watching the night and the breeze sliding through the trees.
"You don't suppose... I'm crazy, do you?... Those voices...? You think I was just playing tricks on myself, believing that it may be some extraterrestrial thing do you...?"
Bob makes a fool out of himself, trying to pass off the whole encounter as if it was fake from the start. But Hala didn't find that funny at all, so he was definitely indifferent about this himself.
"I don't think you're crazy Bob. Last week, I went to the temple where the sun and the moon share their light too."
Bob looks up from his shoulder, wondering what Halas own experiences about this entire concept of possible communication from an unknown being.
"I've read many books about an offspring. One that the Pokémon of the sun and the Pokémon of the moon can only produce. This Pokémon is known as Cosmog."
"C-Cosmog? The little craving of the Pokémon is honestly cute, I'm not gonna lie."
"This is a very rare Pokémon Bob. You won't be able to find one just like the average Grubbin. There have been tales of these Pokémon to be linked with princes and princesses in Alola. Some say that a Cosmog is born in that time you just stumbled upon. No one knows when, nor how. So it remains a myth."
After hearing such a mystic explanation about the Pokémon, Bob wanted to meet one right away, but no way to actually encounter one.
"I see..."
Finishing whatever was left of his Malasada, the boy gets up to head on out, but this time, Hala keeps him from doing so.
"I've been wondering myself, how has your Makuhita been?"
Bob paused, taking out the Pokeball of the spoken Pokémon, and grins. Makuhita has been training hard, no doubt about it. The heavy Pokémon thrusts itself into the enemies, knocking their defense down like toy blocks. Despite its successes, Bob held back a decent answer, not so sure what to say, not having it nor his Houndour out for a while. Rowlet seems to be getting most of the boy's attention, so he felt a tad of shame there.
"It's... alright."
He meekly answered, which was when Hala picks himself up and rose to the occasion.
"Now don't undermine your effort and confidence lad. I can already tell hiding behind your eye, the Pokémon is just about ready to evolve. If you have a minute, I would like to see Makuhita if I'm not being too brash here."
Bob had to owe up to the guy for even inviting him into his home and to feed him, so he did what was requested, Makuhita sent out, standing tall and bold.
"Maah! Hita!"
Hala already seemed impressed that the Pokémon seemed to be in good shape, the sumo trade looks with Hala, trading a smile to see its old friend of his.
"Good evening Makuhita."
Reaching out for a fist bump, the Pokémon thumps its fist right into his, the Hala flickered his eyes, knowing something was up. The flick tilted Bob's head, hoping that wasn't any bad signs or anything.
"My my, my lad. Your dear Pokémon is to evolving soon enough."
Hearing that caught Bob off guard, the first of his Pokémon to be evolving soon. If it was any Pokémon to be evolving, it would've been Rowlet. Perhaps this was just a compliment of the old man, did he really mean so?
"Why thank you Hala."
He didn't know what else to say without sounding rude doing so. Before Bob could return his Pokémon back into the Pokéball, Hala once again keeps him from doing so. In fact, he takes out his own fighting Pokémon, the biggest of his team, Hariyama. The Pokémon causes a thump when landing on the ground, Makuhita didn't flinch whatsoever. It was used to its presence of creating a massive figure of what it already was. The Pokémon caught Bob off, was Hala setting up a surprise battle, this was certainly an unexpected turnabout.
"Don't be alarmed, Bob. I was hoping if I could finish Makuhitas training before it evolves into yours truly."
Hala in fact really did mean the Pokémon was close to evolution. Which surprised Bob quite a bit.
"It is? Hot Dayum! How can you tell Hala?"
The man smiled, also taking a formational pose, one in which a weaponless warrior would. He smiled and took a deep breath.
"Fighting-types do show indeed when they are to evolve soon. The fan that flames their spirits are too high to contain. It just takes the right circumstances to grow the fire into its new home. Bob, let's get you that Hariyama!"
Hearing this actually did pump up the boy, Makuhita already itching to do something about its stage. The plan is to have a traditional one-on-one sumo match between the two, nothing more honorific and eastern than a good old fashion in-circle sumo wrestling match. The excitement in fact caught a few people's attention, sticking around for the match despite the time and the breeze under the Alolan moon.
"Let us hope for a good, clean match. Begin!"
Both Pokémon slammed into each other like trucks playing football. Now, Hariyama obviously has the major advantage of being way heavier and bigger compared to Makuhita, but the match didn't end in a flash. Bob's own Pokémon may be sliding away to the rim of the circle, but it tries to maintain its ground, not giving up. The boy's jaw opens, snapping out as he joins the cheering for the small Pokémon. The chanting pumping everyone's heart, Makuhita begins to glow, creating a bigger force against the opposing Pokémon, now equal in height, size, and species, a match between two Hariyamas came to an end. The victor being Hala's Pokémon.
Bob didn't even care about the lost, because his own Makuhita evolved into a towering Hariyama!
"Wow! Thanks a bunch, Hala! And you were a bulldozer Hariyama!"
"Ha-ri!"
Hala smiled, glad to help raise a Pokémon onto the next stage of evolution. This to him is what being an island Kahuna is also about. Watching the island is one thing, but watching the trainers go is another. Everyone clapped for the two, Bob and his Pokémon were considering to leave for the next, interrupted by Hala for the ninety-eighth time.
"Woah my lad! You sure like to move, don't you? Since you already here, and the match ended sooner to be settled down, why don't we have your Grand Island Trial here and now? Ilima told me the news that your unusual Z-Ring now holds the Normalium Z."
One surprise after another, Bob was definitely wrong when he first thought Alola was nothing more than a snore, this place is to really beg on the knees for. Without much consideration of a battle strategy, he went heads into his offer and prepared to give the People a hell of a show!
"Three one three my lad. And please, don't hold back. I won't either! Not even with my Mankey!"
Halas first Pokémon was a pissed-off Pokémon known for its stem of patience. Bob's team was quite balanced here, one side with weakness, the other with an advantage, the last having equal footing, so he wasn't all worried about the matchups, the real question was the strength of his Pokémon.
"Alright! I'll start with Houndour!"
The Pokémon leaps out of its Pokéball all fired up, hearing the murmurs of why to start with a disadvantage, especially against an Island Kahuna.
"Aye... You're full of surprises Bob, starting with a Dark-type I see... If I may say so myself, let the Grand Island Trail Begin!"
It was time. The Grand Trial of Melemele has now commenced. If Bob was instead just by the sumo match alone, you should just see how he is handling the conditions here. Surrounded by live spectators and practically the boss of the Island right in him, he felt like the odds were against him, but there was no way he could turn back, the time to fight was now. The plan here was to keep Mankey as far away as possible with Houndours far rage attacks.
"Alright, Houndour! Use Snarl!"
A staggering bark, pushes Mankey back, but the matchup didn't leave much of an impression on the Pokémon, the sweat pouring uprose on Bob's cheeks under the cool weather.
"Not bad, my turn! Mankey, use Focus Energy!"
Despite this Pokémon being known for its uncontrollable rage and beatdowns, Mankey took deep breaths to control its movement. Already knocking Bob down like dominoes.
"U-Use Ember!"
Landing another attack better compared to the other one, Mankey gets back up. The energy in its eyes did not let up in the slightest, without notice, the Pokémon comes charging, Houndour prepares for the worst.
"Use Karate Chop!"
"Use Sludge Bomb!"
Houndours attack lands but unfortunately is hit with a massive blow. The matchup and the enhanced critical hit chance already knocks Bob's first Pokémon, Mankey shows little fatigue from the previous damage.
"Don't drown yourself, Bob. It was just the typing that didn't favor you here. You now have the opportunity to turn this match around."
Halas good sportsmanship eases Bob, as everyone cheered on for both sides, he nearly has forgotten the lag firsthand of the match, and now picks himself up.
"Then let's go for it! Rowlet! Let's rock!"
The owl comes flying through the air once Houndour has retreated back into its Pokéball. The two traded with partner looks, and ready to resume the fight.
"Alright, Rowlet! Use Leafage!"
Again, the ranged attack once again drains Mankey's stamina, but Hala acted quick.
"Keep it tailed! Use Pursuit!"
Mankey attempted to keep Rowlet from being free to attack, but the air advantage seemed too much from the land Pokémon.
"You're right Hala! It's time to turn this around, Use Peck!"
The attack lands on the open Mankey, sending it flying, and knocks it right out from the go. Just out of Houndour, the Pokémon couldn't go on.
"My my. In just moments you already show me that you can handle your own!"
A small chuckle comes from Hala as he returns the Mankey into its Pokéball. He took out his second Pokémon.
"Let's start round 2 now! Crabrawler!"
The Pokémon comes right out, ready to fight, both corners ready to go!"
"Let's go! Rowlet! Use Peck!"
Already reusing the Flying-type move, Rowlet comes in for a devastating attack, Hala not flinching nor turning back makes his move.
"Use Power-Up Punch!"
The two attacks collide, pushing both Pokémon back to the sides, things starting to heat up. The real island challenge starting.
"Alright, Use Tackle now!"
Rowlet swings in to land its attack, but Crabrawler was ready for its move.
"Now use Power-Up Punch once more!"
Another collision between the two only ends in Halas favor from the rising attack of his Pokémon. This was a problem for the boy.
"Rowlet! Don't worry! Well, get through this! Use Leafage!"
Rowlet blows its leafy wind right at Crabrawler, but the range attack didn't even look like it was gonna be a problem.
"Not this time! Launch yourself with Power-Up Punch!"
While Crabrawler didn't raise its attack stat any high, it was launched into the air but now was wide open for an attack.
"Hah! Now use Tackle and send it flying!"
Rowlet swings in and bashes the Pokémon right back to the ground, the impact more painful than it has wanted to.
"Quite misfortunate for me... I'm sorry to do you this Crabrawler... But use Pursuit!"
"Dodge and use Peck!"
Crabrawler leaps into the air to attack, but with little air, the movement left it wide open once more as Rowlet swoops in and nails another Peck, the Pokémon unable to continue.
"Oh yeah! That's another Pokémon down! Your growin' it Rowlet! To victory!"
The two high five as Hala returned his Pokémon back, smiling at the boy.
"That is a mighty bond you share with Rowlet Bob. But let's see how you handle against MY partner now. Hariyama. Take the field!"
The Pokémon comes out, shaking the ground with its battle stance. The people grew eager to see the Island Kahunas ace out. Bob and Rowlet gulped, but neither wasn't backing down.
"Alright Rowlet, keep your distance! Use Leafage!"
Hariyama didn't bother to dodge the attack, nor did it take much damage from it, it slowly walked over to the bird, just like a warrior of vengeance.
"Hariyama, use Arm Thrust."
Hala only points out, Hariyama resumed keeping its pace, which rattled Bob from within. From what he noticed, he notices the black Z-Ring on his wrist, he had completely forgotten that the item was perfect to use in a match like this! He felt quite the dunce for the thought. Quickly, he activated the ring by lightly tapping the Normalium-Z, he and Rowlet's movements almost in sync. Remembering the moves Ilima taught him on the day of his first trial, now was the time to unleash the ultimate move!
"Now from the top of the sky! Breakneck Blitz!"
Feeling as if he was the strongest thing in the world, the first time adrenaline felt as if he had his first energy drink as a kid, Rowlet flew down like a middle targeted for Hariyama, the Pokémon ready to counter, with the help of Hala.
"Your dark Z-ring is quite pretty, but I would like to show you mine now!"
Activating his own, the harmonized move-by-move made the feet underneath trembled, energies were high, no one backing down, Hala is about to show Bob why he is entitled an Island Kahuna.
"All-Out Pummeling!"
Hariyama's thrusts were as fast as a machine gun, dozens of energy palms were speeding towards Rowlet like smaller but deadlier missiles. With little experience with the move, Rowlet couldn't steer its flight, barraged by super-powered palms, finishing with one final palm, physical this time from its opponent. Rowlet was done.
"Oh. Shit."
He said as if his partner was just murdered after an overwhelming attack from so, Hariyama took in a deep breath from its own move, barely a single scratch was seen.
"Alright... Third-round rematch... Hariyama!"
Returning Rowlet and sounding out Hariyama, both Pokémon seemed to trade looks, while everyone was quite stunned to see two of the sans Pokémon battle it out for the victor. The air still calm, but the energy never been any higher before. Half eastern of two sumo wrestlers about to battle, the other lies a western showdown of whose to begin the match, who will prevail?
"Use Focus Blast!"
Now as a Hariyama, the Pokémon on Bob's slight was wiser, yet, stronger than what it first was. Both attacks collided, causing a clog of smoke from the explosive attacks. The ground started to rumble, both Pokémon already locked in a wrestling match. A match inside a match!
"Use Arm Thrust!"
A Hariyama's best friend, each attack both were blocked and landed at the same time. It felt like a folk tale, to watch two of the same Pokémon battle it out with whatever they were naturally armed with. It was rather nice, but it wasn't over yet.
"Use Ice Punch!"
"Use Force Palm!"
Both attacks also landed, this time doing more so than the Arm Thrust. Hala's Hariyama for a second gets a chill from the cold attack, now was the time to make things right.
"Use Arm thrust!"
The opponent was then bombarded with free blows from the challenger, but the Pokémon picks its self up.
"Force Palm once more!"
"Alright! Ice Punch then!"
Hariyama dodges the Ice Punch and lands an effective attack, Bob's side now stunned.
"Now use Arm Thrust!"
Copying strategy, now Bobs Pokémon was thrashed, it pushes the foe away but felt its fatigue, the opponents as well.
"Let's finish this! Arm Thrust!"
The enemy charges forward, Bob was taking a massive dive into this next move, which could make or break him, he calls out.
"Go! Knock Off that attack!"
Catching the attack right where Bob wanted to, the attack left Halas free, now was the time to counter, leaving everyone breathless.
"Knock its socks off! Grab it and throw!"
The Hariyama grabs the opponent and tosses it as best as it could, not getting much of a distance, but was time to finish this.
"Ice Punch!"
Before the lying Pokémon could get back up, it was punched with an icy fist, which marked the end of the match. Halas Hariyama could no longer continue.
"My... My oh my..."
An uproar of approval from the fans cheered, Bob, jumping with glee insight if his victory, Hariyama helping its opponent back onto its feet.
"Congratulations Bob. Your team really packs a punch. And you got quite the eye for moves."
The words of compliments flatter Bob, he felt more powerful than he had ever felt.
"Here you go. You're reward and proof for winning. The Fightium-Z is yours."
The boy took the orange crystal with honor, and he even shook hands with the old man before turning the night down, all the battling made him tired, so he went home quickly after that.
"Wait until everyone hears this!"
He told himself, thankfully getting the girly duo problem out of his system. That's until Lana sneaks behind and hugs from behind.
"Bibby Boo~! Professor told me all about your big win! You really are a mountain!"
"L-Lanaaaaaa!"
