Chapter 27: A Touch of Luck

As the evening sun set, and the light began to lack, a girl walked onto a balcony with timid steps. The air was wide and expansive, no limit tangible. That's what she always liked about playing her instrument outside. There was a beautiful sensation of openness.

The cold, silver metal of the flute was gripped tightly by her palms. Pressing her lips onto the mouthpiece, and moving her fingers carefully to their proper placements, she closed her eyes in preparation. An elegant, smooth melody played within her head, one she wished to bring to life. She began to blow into the instrument and release her notes into the dusk sky.

The music she played flowed together perfectly, certainly impressive considering the girl's ripe age. The pleasing sound of her flute was carried by the wind, reaching the ears of nearby creatures. Pokémon of all sizes lifted their heads, curious of the source. One by one, each of them trotted in the music's direction. The group of Pokémon soon developed into a moderate hoard.

Below the balcony, unnoticed by the girl, the hoard approached. Once they came to an understanding of the music's source, the Pokémon all plumped themselves onto the grass and purley listened. They sat soundless and their voices were mute, almost an offering of a respect. Though, truthfully, the quiet was only the result of their desire to listen.

Her song came to an end. She opened her eyes, returning to a tuneless reality. Her body flinches as she noticed the hoard of Pokémon, but the surprise didn't take long to subside.

"Oh! I shouldn't be so surprised. I suppose Pokémon just love the sound of the flute." Lillie looked down to the glistening shine of the instrument, admiration bright in her eyes. It wasn't the first time something like this happened, where the sound of her flute attracted an audience. It filled her with a modest amount of pride, though not enough to make her heart exhilarate.

She peered behind her back, seeing Snowy standing in the doorway. The Vulpix had a sweet smile on its face while its fluffy tail wagged, expressing approval.

"You liked it? Oh Snowy, that makes me incredibly happy," Lillie softly spoke with a joyful chime. "But it's getting late. We should both probably be getting ready for bed."

The girl brought her performance to an end, walking back inside and shutting the door behind her. Silence returned to the night.

The following day, being a Saturday afternoon, Lillie decided the time was perfect for a little shopping. Snowy tucked in her arms, Lillie set out to stroll the streets of Hau'oli city, peering through the windows for anything to catch her eye. Shortly after she began her walk, she spotted a cute, stylish, pink hoodie in an apparel shop's window. She approached the window, her eyes beginning to glimmer.

"Ah. So cute! Don't you think Snowy?" Lillie asked, stroking the head of the baby Vulpix. Snowy made a quick little cheer in approval.

Lillie took notice of the price tag hanging from the hoodie's sleeve. It was only twenty dollars, which was extremely cheap considering the average prices of such clothing. It was practically a steal, and she could certainly afford it with her allowance. Despite those facts, she couldn't bring herself to make a purchase.

"It's too simple. I'm not pretty enough to wear it," Lillie sighed, turning away from the shop's window. Snowy lifted its head to observe its trainer's spirit declining, concerned. Lillie continued, "I'm better off staying in frilly dresses, like Mother told me to. It makes up for my... lacking appearance."

Snowy whimpered, nuzzling its head against her chest. Lillie's grip around her baby tightened, regret striking her back. "I'm sorry, Snowy," Lillie cooed. "It's fine. I've accepted the reality of things."

As she spoke, she felt a sudden gust of wind from behind her. Of course, she immediately jumped. Her heart raced, she jerked her head side to side to try and spot the culprit of the surprise. She caught a glimpse of an average Pikipek, sweetly small, flying into the distance after passing the girl. Like a memory emerging from the depth of an ocean of thought, the image of a shiny Pikipek flying farther and farther away reappeared in Lillie's mind.

Lillie slowly placed her free hand on the top of her head, while still keeping a grasp on Snowy. She felt the soft, white fabric of her hat, something the Pikipek must have found appealing. She remembered befriending the Pokémon, something that she rarely does. She missed it. To form a friendship with a Pokémon, it was special to her due to its rarity. And the no good Team Rocket ripped that friendship away from her.

Lillie leaned down and placed Snowy onto the ground, who continued to look up at its trainer. The girl folded her hands below her waist, and glanced up to the blue sky. She only witnessed wingulls flying by.

"It's such a shame. I miss that Pikipek... the way it slept on my hair. And perched on my finger. It was so cute too, and unique. And it liked me," Lillie mumbled, her eyes softly shimmering in the sunlight. Her voice was low and somber. "Stupid Team Rocket. How am I supposed to meet Pikipek again? Gosh, what are the chances of encountering it? According to my books, one in four thousand."

Lillie hung her head, defeated before she has even started. But Lillie still had a bit of hope tucked within her heart. Regardless of what life had in store for her, she always had a bit of hope tucked away. As she silently stood and moped, the hope unveiled itself. She rebounded, raising two of her fists.

"Then we'll just have to encounter a ton of Pikipeks so we could find it! Easy!" Lillie exclaimed in an attempt of self-convincion. "We'll find our new friend, Snowy!"

Snowy paused and blinked, taken back by Lillie's quick recovery. It didn't perseverate on its surprise, as it quickly grinned and cheered in support. "Kooo! Kooooo!"

"Let's do this! Let's do this! I know we could do this!" Lillie chanted. However, the color flushed out from her cheeks as soon as she noticed that passersby were beginning to stare at her. They were in public, afterall. Embarrassed, she lowered her shoulders and took a step back. "S-sorry..."

After the embarrassing scene, Lillie temporarily returned to her home and packed her bag with everything she thought might serve a purpose in her search. The bag was heavy, but she continued forward, leaving her home once again. Her first search location of choice was the grassy area she found herself in once before, the same grassy area where she discovered the shiny Pikipek.

She knelt on one knee and placed her bag down onto the grass. Snowy observed Lillie reaching her hand into the bag, squinting its eyes with curiosity. The girl took out a cylinder shaped container, which had a picture of a Pikipek placed on its cap. Inside were pellets, specifically made to appeal to a Pikipek's taste. She unscrewed the top and shook a couple of pellets into the palm of her hand. She dropped the pellets onto the ground and placed the container beside it. She stood up, and stepped back.

She looked down to Snowy who sat at her side, and gave it an explanation. "I'm sure the scent of the food will attract a few Pikipeks, and if we're lucky, maybe it will attract our friend."

The two waited, Lillie maintaining her optimism. And soon, they heard the call of bird Pokémon in the distance. They both turned their heads to witness a large flock of Pikipeks, Trumbeaks, and even a Toucannon speeding in their direction. At first, Lillie froze like a deer in headlights, but her senses quickly kicked in.

"Snowy!" She shrieked. Scooping the white fluff ball into her arms, she quickly dashed out of the way before the zooming flock of birds could trample them both. Lillie tumbled onto the grass after dodging, tripping due to imbalance. Lifting her head, she observed the group of Pokémon scrambling for the tasty pellets. They even begun to fight with one another, attacking with Drill Pecks and Rock Smashes. The girl slowly stood up, noticing that not a single one of the Pokémon shined with a unique color.

"I think we should leave before this gets too out of hand," Lillie spoke with a nervous tightness, unsettled by the behavior the wild bird Pokémon exhibited. "If it isn't already."

Continuing to grip Snowy in her arms, Lillie fled the scene, leaving the birds to their chaos.

After her first failure, Lillie refused to let her heart or determination waver. Her second search location of choice was the temple, the same temple where Lana found herself a sparkling stone.

Lillie stood in front of the Temple's entrance, wrapped in bubble wrap. Snowy was also wrapped in bubble wrap, despite its discomfort with the material. The small Pokémon whimpered, which made a guilt arise within Lillie's chest.

"I'm super sorry," Lillie gently apologized, stroking its head. "But we nearly died when that flock came speeding towards us. This is for our safety."

Snowy store blankly, unswayed by Lillie's exaggeration. Lillie scratched her cheek, knowing she hasn't completely sold her reasoning to the baby Vulpix. Regardless, she continued on with her second plan. She raised a portable cassette player, courtesy of her large bag, into the air.

Snowy tilted its head, confused, as Lillie began to explain. "I have some recordings of the vocal calls of several different types of Pokémon, Pikipek included. If I play this recording, maybe the call of a fellow Pikipek will attract our friend."

With that, Lillie pressed the play button. The recorded sound of a Pikipek's cries filled the air, echoing in the ears of the girl and her companion. Little did either of them know that the call Lillie had recorded on the tape was a Pikipek's mating call.

A single, average Pikipek heard the recording, lifting itself into the air with intrigue and hope. It flew in the direction of the sound, its heart beating rapidly, carrying an exhilaration at the idea of a chance. Those hopes of that very Pikipek was ripped from it, and destroyed once Lillie entered its sight. The realization of the sound's origin sent the small bird into a fury, fueled by disappointment, dissatisfaction, and perceived trickery.

Lillie turned her head, and noticed Pikipek. At first, she didn't panic at the sight, but soon she caught a glance of the enraged fire burning hot in its eyes. The bird flew straight in her direction, which set off alarms within the weary girl's head.

She lowered the cassette player, her arm slightly shaking. "Snowy...? Do you think I did something wrong...? Is the Pikipek coming... after me?"

Her question was answered once the Pikipek fired its first Bullet Seed at the frightened girl.

"Eeep!" Lillie shrieked. "I did something wrong! I did something wrong! Stop! Please stop! I'm too young to be seeded to death!"

Lillie raised her arms to defend herself from the Pikipek's seedy projectiles. Her stiff legs were forced into action, as she attempted to outrun the quick bird. Her attempts weren't completely fruitless, but as she kept trying to run and flee, the bird continued its pursuit while aiming its attacks. Snowy trailed after both Lillie and the bird, joining the chase. Good thing they both had bubble wrap to lighten the blows of Pikipek's attacks.

Here's a fun fact to mention. This Pikipek is the same Pikipek that assaulted Ash the day he caught Rockruff.

After being chased by the single Pikipek for an entire hour, a distraught, defeated Lillie and an empathetic Snowy returned to the mansion they called home. Lillie unpacked her bag, disheartened, but not drowned in pessimism. But after a day of failure, it was growing difficult to keep a positive tone as she spoke. Snowy picked up on Lillie's declining hopes, whimpering with a the heavy sound of empathy.

"Well, what's a couple of failures? We could still try again tomorrow. It's not hopeless Snowy, it's not hopeless," Lillie spoke. Though her words were directed at the baby, in reality, they were more directed at herself.

The evening was creeping forward, like a serene shadow arriving to bring the day to an end. Lillie did not feel any fatigue, and did not worry of sleep. She worried about how long it would take to find the Pikipek she befriended, or if she would even be able to.

Lillie perseverated on that subject. Those same worries persisted until the sun finally set, and the crisp night air entered her room through the open windows. The coolness made her relax, which lead her to obtaining a self-awareness. She needed to calm herself.

Maybe she needed to empty her emotions through a melody that played in her head.

That thought crossed her head, and immediately after, she prepared her flute and walked onto the balcony. Snowy followed behind her, tail raised, more than pleased to get a chance to hear Lillie's music once again.

The girl closed her eyes, and pressed her lips against the flute mouthpiece. Placing her fingers on the proper positions, she began to blow.

Emotion surged through her, beginning in her stomach and exiting through her breath. She strung together a melody with notes of somberness and with a lack of true stability. She didn't even feel time pass, lost in the music she created, music that expressed her current state.

The beautiful, yet, unsteady melody, did not attract an audience before. They did not respond to the sad call, the sad begging of a girl's instrument. That is, with one exception. Without Lillie even being aware, a visitor sat upon the top of her head as she played.

Her song came to an end, as she lowered her flute and opened her eyes. Looking out to the night sky, she couldn't help but to smile. The view she was granted with her balcony allowed her to see the beauty of Alola's evenings. She was happy. She was calm.

She turned her back to the view, planning to head inside. However, she was stopped by the energetic Snowy, hopping up and down while making cheerful cries.

"Snowy! Snowy! Heh heh, what has gotten into you?" Lillie questioned with a giggle. "Silly. Now what's got you all excited?"

As Lillie asked her question, she heard the fluttering of wings. A Pikipek with shining feathers, and a unique coloring, picked itself up from the girl's head. It lowered itself into her view, flying around her head with peppy chirps. The girl's heart nearly lept from her chest, her grin growing wide. She extended her finger, and the shiny bird happily perching on her finger.

"Oh my Arceus! It's you! It's really you!" Lillie exclaimed with a mixture of relief and excitement. "...Did... did you come here because you heard my flute?"

The befriended Pikipek nodded its head, before nuzzling its cheek against Lillie's. It was happy to be reunited with the girl as well, missing her high-pitched voice and her sweet demeanor. Lillie swayed back in forth as the Pikipek nuzzled against her, extremely pleased and content.

"How lucky it was that I found you. Hey... you know little one. Can I call you Lucky? I think that's a cute, I would love to give you that name," Lillie softly requested.

"Ki! Pi!" Pikipek, or Lucky, chirped with acceptance. Already taking a liking to its new title, Lucky flapped its wings while continuing to gleefully chirp.

Lillie warmly smiled, as she made a second request. "Heh heh, you're just so cute Lucky! Please... will you... will you... be my friend? Will you be my Pokémon?"

Lucky looked to Lillie with its large, green eyes. Once again, it nodded it's head.

And soon after that, Lillie became a trainer to her second Pokémon. Though, she barley stored her friends in a Pokéball. She enjoyed having her two Pokémon walk by her side. After the night Lillie and Lucky reunited, the girl and her two Pokémon all began to grow a strong bond with one another.
