Part 97. The Poké Flute
Now the time had come for us to move onward to Route Eight. Even after the sadness we had felt from Blue leaving us behind. We still held firm to our beliefs that we would one day see him again soon and had made tremendous progress traversing the region to get to where we were at that moment.
The clanking sounds of kitchenware being placed within the sink as Mr. Fuji's grandchildren were all busy with work. The tiny, gracious Cubone wanted to assist and carefully maneuvered a dish plate into the rinse compartment of the sink.
It seems like you are gonna be right at home Cubone, your mother is probably looking back on you now knowing you are safe and sound. I thought with grand recollection.
Despite how bitter I still was when Blue had left us all behind for the sake of his revenge.
I loved seeing that, cute but happy smile of his.
After witnessing such an event; I had finished rolling my tied-down sleeping bag within my pack and couldn't help but smile at Mr. Fuji as he graciously pet across Cubone's smooth skull-shaped head.
The tiny creature turned back to face the old man after that kind gesture, and swayed into his arms. Maneuvering into place to cuddle, the young one nuzzled his beak into Mr. Fuji's bicep. It was like witnessing the event of a happy ending between a Pokémon and his long lost family.
Though the difference in this factor wasn't that the Pokémon could've been better off with just Marowak as his mother, I felt if things were different; he'd still be in the same mood. However, it was as if it was meant to be. As if fate had granted him another path, a second chance at peace.
The old man turned and marched over toward our group while holding his new member of the family. All while Cubone squirmed along his arm to find another comfortable spot to rest.
"You both leaving so soon?" Inquired the old man with curious eyes. "You know you are more than welcome to stay here a bit longer if you wish."
I shook my head and kindly smiled after his warm gesture of hospitality once again.
"No we'll be fine, besides, we have a parcel that we need to deliver to Erika."
"Erika?" Tilted the old man.
"You mean the Princess of Celadon?"
"The very one," nodded Misty in answer to his small query.
"We don't have much time, we do need to deliver this to her soon." Regarded Brock as he pulled the straps of his bag below the handles tight in preparation for the trip ahead."
"Ah yes, the Professor, I've been meaning to meet with him. Is he still busy at the lab in Pallet Town?"
"Of course!" I shouted with exuberance. "He's busy with trying to gather all relevant data on the biology of all Pokémon."
The old man gasped from this intriguing information.
"Of all Pokémon?... But how is that possible?"
Red reached down into his pocket and promptly pulled it out to unfurl the device before him.
Once the device unclipped off its hinges and the screen promptly turned on with a loud audible beep, his eyes widened with jubilee.
"Incredible!" He said as he reached across to grab the device, excitement clearly billowing from his eyes.
"Excuse me, may I?" He asked, knowing his impoliteness got the best of him.
".............."
My silent friend nodded and happily obliged by handing the device within his coarse, sagely hands. As the old man clung to the red, plastic doors of the device. A blue light emitted in the background to provide clarity within the display. He was absolutely astounded at how this device came to being.
"My god the old man had gone and done it. A device that can record all data, fit firmly into the palm of your hand?!" He exclaimed as he promptly closed the doors, folding the device shut as he continued to analyze its exterior.
"This technology is the greatest leap we have ever conjured since the rise of the television, computer, or the telephone. In fact, Professor Oak's invention has gone leaps and bounds!...."
"What do you mean?" I inquired with a confused look as everyone else. Of course, they all observed the same thing as me. His curious mind splurged with childlike wonder.
"You not only will be able to carry informational data within the device. This PokéDex will literally shape the world's knowledge, heck, everyone may one day be able to carry these. He imbued a computer chip within it and updated it with an operational system that can streamline the data of all Pokémon simultaneously after they are caught!"
I was certainly enlightened along with him, I knew a lot about computers but it seemed that this man also knew the deep intricacies of their facets. Almost like he had a familiarity with the tech himself.
"Leaf! Tell me, what was it like being able to use the PokéDex for the very first time!?" He said with wide gleeful eyes.
I looked back toward my friends and then looked over to him. Not knowing if we should say anything or try and fluff up the conversation. All I knew, was that it was a device that came really handy when it counted.
"I know a thing or two about computers, but from what I gathered after using the device. It helped me to identify Pokémon I've never seen before. My first catch on the excursion was Butterfree in Viridian Forest."
"Had the device not provided details based on its infrared camera. We would've only guessed it's species though, the information it records keeps data of Pokémon that are extensive and complex. The information it provides gives us bite size details on all the Pokémon we've caught here in the Kanto region."
"Professor Oak used current world information on all the Pokémon he could document throughout the world, their habitats, climate, their typing and used information to be coded into the programmable slots. All within a small, pocket sized computer."
"So he organized the information based on current knowledge written in the textbooks of our Pokémon academia?.... Fascinating."
The man paused after going into deep thought. He knew that the PokéDex could be useful in capturing the data of Pokémon but there was one particular Pokémon that he wanted each of us to find.
"I'll let you go, time is of the essence, if what Professor Oak needs to be sent directly to Erika is of utmost importance. I'll provide you all with an item that will be useful to you on your journey."
An item?
Mr. Fuji had to be someone of importance, the fact that the International Police recognized him almost immediately and then called him Doctor Fuji was no coincidence. The man seemed to have played an important role in the advancement of our technological understanding of these creatures that we all called Pokémon throughout human history.
The old man carefully placed Cubone on the ground and maneuvered across the house towards a set of boxes that were carefully wrapped in a bow on top of a bookshelf. He grabbed all three of the boxes and walked toward us.
"Here take these." He said as he allowed each of us to carry the boxes off of his arms.
Yellow promptly unfurled his ribbon on the box and pulled the lid to reveal an elongated and golden flute. One that had a point near the end. With holes that pierced the exterior and near the roof of the flute. It having been painted over with a golden color and in symbolic fashion. Had been carved in the shape of a Poké Ball on the outside.
As he pulled the flute out from the box it felt light to the touch, almost fragile. If we were to drop it, it seemed that it would break on contact, though we learned the opposite was the case.
"Are you sure you want us to take these? It's too kind of a gesture for you old man." Asked Yellow with careful admittance.
The old man Fuji nodded and proceeded to let us know the significance of these items.
"The Poké Flute will help you with being able to awake Pokémon that are sleeping, that includes any Pokémon that are put to sleep in battle." He informed.
Incredible.
It was not just any spray item that would be disposable like an Awakening. This item was our key item to keep with us and based on its appearance. It felt fragile, but according to its craftsmanship, it felt durable and strong.
"The Poké Flute will prove useful for your PokéDex quest. If any Pokémon are asleep, which I suspect there are in certain parts of the region. They will be able to awaken the Pokémon without fail. There will be no need for you to continually buy items that could cost you more money."
"Which Pokémon would mostly be asleep?" I asked with a peculiar look.
"I'm hearing rumors of a Pokémon that's mostly nocturnal during the day and hunts at night. He's blocked certain paths within the region that's caused other trainers to not be able to advance to the next town. If you wake him up without the flute, he will get angry and fight. He's a very dangerous Pokémon, but I'm sure that with your current strength. He won't be much of a threat to you and with the flute, waking him will only soothe him."
"Which Routes will this Pokémon be located at?" Inquired Brock who had just as much of an interest as all three of us.
"Between Route Eleven and Twelve south of Lavender Town and west towards Route Sixteen where you all are heading."
With the knowledge that we had in mind. We had placed our new items within our backpacks and bowed before the Professor with profound gratitude.
"Thank you for all that you have done. We'll take it from here." I assured to the kind old man and waved goodbye as we all followed the path that lead west toward Route Eight.
"Report to me on the efforts Miss Green. I'd be pleased to hear the results on how the Professor has been able to document this Pokémon after it has been awakened."
I nodded with a warm smile and kindly gestured with two fingers, granting him the peace sign.
"You can count on us, Dr. Fuji."
Once we had finished our goodbyes, our sights were set on the wavy terrain that bounced alongside the mountains that connected toward Route Eleven and Route Eight. Our next destination was Celadon City.
Yet as we quietly trudged along the path toward the next step of our adventure. My mind cast hold toward the item that had gotten Mr. Fuji so worked up. The standard that these wise teachers had set toward it had me thinking about its profound importance.
Bill, Mr. Fuji and even Professor Solress. They gave such a high praise to it, that I had not at all considered the significance of its technicalities other than its convenience.
I want to try and test out the power of this device by catching more. I want to try and catch all one hundred and fifty Pokémon so that my knowledge of these events can outstretch my strength as a Pokémon trainer.
