Part 34. The Mysterious Talking Rattata
My father was alive. Yet, after all this time Red could not tell me this very secret alone. I could never understand why Red went to such great lengths to not tell me anything. Let alone proclaim such a bold statement to my face.
I've had to live with the fact that my father might have been killed in action while at war with the very organization that kidnapped me. Ensign Drake was the one who, according to legend. Had fought with my father and killed him on the rooftops of what many now know as Tin Tower in Ecruteak City.
Was all that I was experiencing somehow correlated? I needed to know the answer.
"Red?" I Inquired with a soft voice as I fell to my knees in defeat. I thought I had once known myself better than anyone in regards to what happened in my life? I thought I knew, that my father would never be coming back?
I really don't know what to think.
As Red continued his trek towards the Cabin. I remained disconsolate as I watched him gain more ground away from me. I contemplated on how he was able to know of such events.
"Does he know that I had been kidnapped?" I asked sincerely.
The boy turned to face my shattered and broken self. Trying his best to hold back his tears, I almost knew in that moment. He was telling the truth. The face he made, the way he twitched as he moved his hands in and out of his pockets. He nodded back to me, affirming the answer that I was looking for.
So many other questions and yet not the answer that I wanted to hear.
My apprehension after the fact did not stop my tears from flowing. In a lot of ways. I was very happy to hear that he was alive all this time.
"Why Red, why didn't he tell me after all these years!!—
"He wanted to protect you." He interjected.
"He wanted to make sure his own family was safe and that his name would not be associated with you and your mother."
"Who decides that?! I've been wanting him to be in my life ever since the War had ceased. My mother cried every night that he was not there for me when the conflicts occurred! I just wish that I knew, I just wish that I could be there for him....." I said while sobbing toward the ground.
"Leaf?" inquired Yellow with a reverent tone. He could tell that I was really upset.
"My father loved us; he loved us so much. That he went out of his way to fight against the very evil that took me from my own mother's home! He was not there! He was not there to comfort me or my mother! He was not there to comfort everyone that was in harms way. I had to pay the price for it! I'll never forgive him, and I'll never forgive those endless tears that my mother cried every night he was away!"
Both Yellow and Red bowed their heads in solemn shame. The pain that I felt when I was taken from them at the age of seven never left me. There was so much chaos and darkness that came into my life that it became such a burden. There was no way to forget about the times when Love's Apostles had taken me to their underground base and conditioned me as one of their own members. It was darkness, it was violating. The way they brainwashed me into their Organization, it was evil incarnate. They trafficked people as well as Pokemon into their ranks, which broke hefty international laws.
When Autumn was drafted to War back in November 13th, 1966. He fought during The Great Turmoil that took place along the shores of Vermillion when he was about eighteen years old. He never once was home with mother even during the year 1983 when they met and had me, my birthday was August 1st. Those times were limited and there was great conflict during these years. Many people suffered and died by the hands of Love. And my mother's love for her husband was beginning to wane.
When my father supposedly passed away during the Battle of Olivine May 30th, 1990. Love's Spade had kidnapped me from my mother's home and groomed me to become a member of the Apostles an elite training group that worked as a web under the hands of Joker. They committed so much atrocity throughout the land of Johto that many were wanted internationally by the Interpol. War was what drove Ensign underground and arms had ceased and peace came about after the year 1991 after they had lost the war. But that never stopped mercenaries from committing crimes and pillaging towns and cities.
The reason I was so upset with Red; was because he knew, and had met my father on his journey. Autumn had to be somewhere near where I am in the region and from what I can tell. He is trying to prevent me going further from getting hurt.
That's exactly what my father would do.
As my tears wet the soil; I hiccuped and wiped them off my cheeks with my wrists. I was so happy; but so devastated at the same time. There was so much that I wanted to say to my father that it hurt me so much that; I would do anything to help make things right for our family. I'm sure he felt the same way.
I love you father. I am glad that you are safe.
"Why the long face young lady?" Inquired a random voice from below me.
"I'm just so happy to hear that he is alive." I said
"Who, your father Autumn? From what I can tell he' s got his whole life ahead o' him."
A small purple Rattata clawed his way along my thigh and stood postured looking directly up at me. This individual surprised me, because I couldn't see where the voice was coming from nor who it belonged to? From what I observed, Red and Yellow were there with me but this human being seemed to know about Autumn also.
"Who's there, who are you?" I inquired as I moved my cranium back and forth to find the source of the voice.
"Down here!"
"Where?"
"'Ere!" said the Rattata as he was venturing to get my attention.
I was absolutely shocked at the surprise that this Pokémon exuded from his mouth. I jumped back flinging the poor Rattata off my leg and toward the ground.
"Aagh careful!" He yelped as he tried to adjust his limbs upon landing.
"I'm not used to this body y'know!"
"The-the-the-the-YELLOW! This Pokémon can talk!" I screamed pointing directly to the small little creature as he curled his whiskers about him.
"That ain't no Pokémon; I can sense him." Said Yellow.
Red gasped with a blue face as well. This was also really shocking for him to see a talking Pokémon. It was not something normal you would see anywhere in the real world.
"Yeah, I'm no Pokémon, listen my name is—
"Bill right?...." Inquired Red.
"That's right, how did you know?" Asked the purple cream creature.
"Blue told me that I needed to visit you. We need to talk about finding space to put our Pokemon in case we run out of inventory." Said Red matter of fact.
"Ah-yes, Blue did visit me, but that was because I was in human form. I have a favor to ask ya'll?"
Both me and Yellow looked on in confusion.
So this is Bill the creator of the PC that provides storage to all Pokémon caught in the region? I never thought that we would stumble upon a genius like him of all people? He looked to be in laughable shape. He's a Pokémon now?
"I'll need you all to follow me into my lab." Croaked the rat as he skittered along the rough ground.
"Whoah! He's quick just like a Rattata—
"C'mon let's follow him!" I shouted to Yellow as we urgently followed after the creature along with Red's footsteps.
"My Cabin's just up ahead, the door is unlocked. But I'm lucky enough to have been able to stumble upon travelers like you. If I didn't; I probably would remain in this body for a while." Shouted Bill as he charged up ahead.
Yellow, Red and I did our best to keep up with his pace. The Pokémon he turned into ran at an exceptional scuttle, it was difficult to keep up.
Red had finally trailed up behind him. We weren't too far from his Cabin. In fact, he was approaching the door at incredible speed. They managed to get ahead of me and Yellow's stride, which wasn't helpful we were already out of breath.
"Here we are at my 'ere Cabin. Go ahead and open the door there sonny-jim!" Yelped Bill with a nod.
Red reached in and clasped hold of the knob and turned it slightly to unbolt the door. Once we arrived inside the Cabin. The lights had switched on, in what would be considered a massive lobby area. In comparison to the outside of the Cabin made of wooden oak panels. The inside was more immaculate, more polished and neat.
All around us, we observed with curious grandeur that the room was made of metal and titanium steel. Two capsules lined the back of the room and a computer desk with a monitor and keyboard.
The two capsules along the back of the room. Stood to a great height and soared about seven- feet tall towards the ceiling. Both were aligned before the PC desk on the left with perfect symmetry. Showing that Bill's behavior was one of a perfectionist. This was certainly a sight to behold, especially for me. This man was a tech genius.
"This is my lab where I perform my experiments. I'm trying to understand how physical material would move from one point to the next.
Incredible! I thought with exuberance. Science once again amazes me... well aside from Solress. Bill seems a bit more down to Earth.
"Now the reason I need your help. Is because my experiment did not go the way I had planned it. I was hoping to test the transference of Pokémon and humans to one machine."
"However, I got stuck in one of the capsules. During that time, the molecular structure of my body and Rattata's had formed as one. I need to go back into the machine in order to get my human body back and restore the transference to the original capsule." He said as he pointed to the capsule on the left.
"I'll need someone with a little bit of tech prowess to get my body back. Any takers?"
We all looked at each other in confusion. Wondering if any of us would be willing to try out one form or the other.
"Will you be harmed at all?" I asked.
"Nada! Despite how weird it may seem. This machine can do no harm to me or the Pokémon." He assured.
Both my friends gestured for me to do it. Despite how much I protested, they insisted based on their pointed fingers that I should do it.
"Why are you both pointing at me?" I yelped.
The reason Red and Yellow were pointing at me was obvious.
"Well you're more of the tech wiz among the group. You have a better grasp at hacking and programming." Said Yellow with a sly grin.
".............." Nodded Red in agreement.
"Fine!" I relented.
"Yay! Thank you so much for your help Leaf! If you assist me with the transfer. I'll be sure to tell you where your father is right now."
....he also knows about my situation doesn't he? No surprise, Professor Oak has a community of scientists that he rubs elbows with in the region. Seems Bill also knows more about the organization that is taking place and the history behind my kidnapping.
I nodded back to him favorably. Bill was willing to keep a promise, not for my sake, but because he seems to empathize with my situation. It was best if I helped him in his endeavor to finish his project and bring harmony to Pokémon and people.
He's a scientist I can trust.
"Alright, Bill, I'll be right behind the PC. Red, you try and secure him within the first capsule machine. I'll do my best move the controls to activate the transference."
Red nodded obediently and marched his way to the capsule to unlatch the door that was securing it air tight. Bill leaped his way in and swiftly closed the latched door in place.
"Yellow take post to the second cylinder on the left. We'll need to make sure we are ready to open both so that we can free him and Rattata at the same time."
"I'm on in it!" Affirmed Yellow.
Here goes nothing. I raced with impunity.
Doing my best to find the two window transferences on screen. I noticed that the schematics showed two different switches. One had a connection to the first cylinder, the other on the second.
Which one should I fire up first?
Bill did mention that he needed to transfer his body first before moving the Rattata to the other capsule.
I need to think carefully about this.
If he used the capsule first and then the switch began to play a role in his molecular change than I feel we better go with the first.
Alright, I know what I need to do.
Two buttons along the keyboard show a blue and a red input switch. Each capsule looked to be labeled as the same color of these two buttons. I slicked my hands across the keyboard and pushed the blue button on the right first. The blue light flashed and the machine came alive with a loud hum.
"Is this gonna work Leaf? He's not gonna be mind melded from this is he?" Inquired Yellow with a shaky tone.
"It'll work." I answered in confidence.
I then went ahead and bumped the red button on the left where the Rattata was first placed from within his lab experiment. That machine also hummed at the same time as the first one. The light blinking red.
Here goes the transference.
The cylinders themselves rocked and heaved back and forth. Red and Yellow looked on with worried distress. They were skeptical on whether this reverse experiment was going to work in our favor.
The machine climbed with noise. Churning the gears of each respective motor. They turned, faster and faster as the lights flashed within their rectangular portholes with varying colors across the walls. The machine ceased its rocking motion and came humming to a complete conclusion.
Both red and blue lights were no longer flashing. Which means it was time for the reveal.
"Open the hatch!" I commanded.
Red and Yellow nodded back and aggressively unfastened each of the hatches. The cylinders themselves released clumps of smoke from the aftermath. Out of the first cylinder, appeared a sharp young man. With long spiky brown hair, a white shirt and brown pants. His smile had left his gaze as he observed my surprised look with amusement and out of the second one appeared his partner Pokémon Rattata.
"Retttetici!!" Cheered Rattata joyfully.
"Haha! Looks like the reversal was a success! Now I learned a thing or two about how we can transfer physical beings as data. This means there was no harm and corruption during the transference. All thanks to you Leaf!"
"I, ugh-ugh. Me?"
The man nodded back at me with a wide grin.
"How is your brain not melded?" Asked Yellow with shock.
"..............." Nodded Red in agreement.
"The machine proves to be harmless. The structure is all based on the programming I have for the software to the computer. Haha! You all should be able to transfer your Pokémon without harm. However there is a caveat in this storage. Only twenty Pokémon can be hosted in the cloud's storage per box after the transference."
"Holy cow! So we have the ability to carry beyond six?"
"Not physically, you are regionally limited with carrying six based on league rules. However with your Pokédex and the Poké Balls at your disposal. You can freely catch Pokémon and have them stored in the clouds software. They are data bits. And with my transference machine. Pokémon should based on physics gathered from the experiment. Will be able to retain their physical appearance after they are stored!"
"Whoah." Yelped Yellow.
"This machine seems super handy!" I shouted with excitement.
"Precisely my lady. I spent years developing the best tech in conjunction with Poké Ball technology. I wanted to help trainers with the convenience to store Pokémon at any time. This in turn will help Professor Oak on his endeavors in achieving his dream of understanding all Pokémon and their variants all over the world as you attempt to catch 'em all!"
How amazing!
This man had similar convictions in comparison to Professor Oak. I could not fathom his tenacity but one of the reasons I was drawn to him was his ability to understand and invent. He seemed to be a goal oriented man. A perfectionist for sure, but with a southern drawl. He dreams of a similar utopia. One where technology can assist the needs of both people and Pokémon alike.
"Bill is amazing!" Yelped Yellow.
"................." Nodded Red.
"Now Leaf, about your father."
My mind stood at attention after he mentioned him by name. His eyes directed to mine.
"He's currently a spy, investigating the whereabouts of Solress and Team Rockets collaborations with Team Love. I was told from Professor Oak not to tell you after you had finished your journey. But seeing how distressed you were and how unfair the situation may seem. I broke that promise. However with you and the rest of your friends I'm sure you can find him. If you want to find him. You'll need to seek him at the Vermillion City's seaport. If you are having a hard time reaching him he has his—
"Reasons?" I interjected.
The room soon fell to silence.
"I understand." I said after bowing my head inaudibly.
Nodding after hearing this information. This was news that I did not want to pass up.
If he's alive, then I better have a talk with him face to face whenever we encounter him.
"You won't be able to succeed unless you get stronger. Leaf.... you must defeat Gym Leader Misty if you ever hope to stop those tyrants who put people and Pokémon in harms way. You cannot grow stronger along with your Pokémon unless you also grow with them."
I looked at Bill straight into his eyes. I knew right at the moment he said those words. I knew I was careless, I understood that if I rushed to find my father. Things still wouldn't be the same. I have so many strengths that I have gained along my journey. I appeared to understand the weight of his advice and recognized that my Pokémon couldn't grow without me. So I proclaimed to Bill with passion, and every gestured fist I could marshal.
"I will not rest until we are strong. Bill, I will become a great Pokémon Trainer. Like Oak, and my father before me." I furrowed.
Bill smiled at my conviction. Placing his rough hands along my shoulders; he knew at that moment. I was prepared to do everything necessary to be stronger.
"In time, I know you will, your father may not know yet, but I'm sure he'd be very proud of you."
