Part 23. A Boiling Straw

I waltzed over towards the computers mainframe. Eyeing the controls with intent curiosity. The screen indicated the levels on a small map describing the ships main floors. Floor one being the main engine bay. Floor two being The Brig or Cargo hold and floor three the Command Deck.

Curious.

The Command Deck was where I originally woke up while onboard Haunebu. One floor that I had yet to explore inside the main deck of the spacecraft was floor one. If I didn't see my friends anywhere on the two main decks of the ship. Then they would have to be somewhere down below.

Red and Yellow have to be contained within the boiler room or the engine bay. If Solress wanted to separate me and my friends in the most secure hatch of when the craft abducted me below. They more than likely are there.

If I used the mainframe computer to encode the same key card. I can probably escape to the outside world by going down toward the main floor to rescue them.

The engine bay must be the most secure floor though. How can I program the key card to match a door that doesn't match the codes to the cell doors?

Then a thought ran swiftly through my neurons. I gazed upon the main blueprints of the map. Clicking on the open hologram. I zoomed in on the main terminals. There were four letters used to unlock the main door hatch below deck.

That's it!

The map had instructions on how to carefully program a key card but each number was carefully encrypted on each corner of the screen. Meaning, I couldn't obtain the locked numbers on each corner without a four digit numerical passcode.

This is going to be a little bit more difficult than I was expecting.

What passwords could open these doors, was the best question I could have asked myself? However my alluring fascination could not escape my glancing eyes towards the cell doors numbers.

Zero-zero.

And a number after the zeros has to indicate a number pattern that would best fit the password. The more I thought however; the more stressed out I became.

This is a waste of time. I need to find them immediately or we'll be stuck on this ship forever.

But the more I thought about them. The more distracted I became.

Virginia used her Pokémon in an attempt to release them from their cages. The Pokémon she used looked like a little five inch blue sprout. With legs and small red annular eyes and a cute little slit for a mouth. She also had three of four distinct leaves that stretched up along the top of her head.

"Razor-Leaf Oddish!" Yelped Virginia with a cute scratchy voice.

The nimble little Pokémon swayed her head swiftly toward the locks in question. Her leafs stiffened upward along her head like spikes. Releasing two of her leaflets as they cut across the top loop of the lock like a butter knife cutting cheese.

Her Oddish is quite powerful. I thought with amazement.

Releasing the lock of the poor little lizard Pokémon Charmander. Who stared with anxious but also thankful blue eyes. The creature used his small orange scaly hands to scratch along the bars to help Virginia. Squeaking and pleading to be released from his small little prison.

"Hey! Patience I need to get the lock loose."

"Awe you went for the Charmander? I can tell you like him. He's a cutie." I teased.

"Char-Char!" He cried with fervent innocence.

"Never thought I'd be the bad guy to be letting go of precious commodities for the Boss. But I guess I'll have to make an exception for you Charmander." Relented Virginia.

"You do have a soft side, that's adorable." I smiled with absorbed intent.

"Will you stop?" She responded irritably.

"Charrr!!" Squeaked Charmander with a nod.

As Virginia pried the lock open from off the hinges. Charmander bursted the door open. The force of the brunt tackle severed the hinges dramatically. While flinging Virginia onto the hard ridden floor on her bum.

"Ouch." She ached, placing her hand along her behind to massage the cramp.

Charmander crawled to his savior. Squeaking to Virginia's lap with grateful tears in his eyes. He plopped his scaly limbs on top of her crossed legs and reached in for a hug around her waist.

Awwwe. I thought with tears in my eyes.

I could tell the Pokémon was so grateful by the way he was looking at her. It was certainly a kind gesture.

"Charrr-Char!" Cried the fiery little one. His tail carefully burning away from Virginia's outfit.

"You okay there little annoying lizard?" Asked Virginia softly.

The Pokémon squeaked and nodded affirmatively. So far, every Pokémon that had gathered around Virginia and Jigglypuff had been released from their cages. Now it was up to me to open the hatch to the engine bay below.

Okay so the first thing I have to do is input the code to break the encryption.

Gazing up at the numbers after the zeros lined along the cell doors. I decided it was better to try and input the codes via patterns.

What would be the best option to input these patterns sequentially?

Odds?

Evens?

I graciously slid my fingers across the keyboard of the mainframe and inputed the codes that came to mind.

Two, four, six, eight.

"Unauthorized authentication." Responded Haunebu's female voice.

No surprise there.

Moving my gentle limbs over to the start I repeated the sequence but in a different rhythmic pattern.

Two, four, eight, ten.

"Unauthorized authentication."

Once again, no authorization. In my frustration I pounded my fist against the mainframe vigorously.

What other patterns does this computer allow me to use?

Odds.

It was time for me try and input the numerical sequence in the odds range. This time backwards but in the same pattern as before with odd numbers.

Nine, seven, three, one.

There was a small beep.

Suddenly all the cell doors had opened. And the encrypted authentication window had left the screen. Now the final numerical password was needed in order for me to program the key card.

Virginia looked absolutely surprised at my ability to follow patterns and was genuinely dumbfounded by my ability to decode the decryption quickly and efficiently.

"Umm.. how did you do that?" She asked with a gaping jaw.

"I've done a bit of pattern reading a lot in my day. My mom gave me a PC after I was rescued. I did a lot of coding and started programming my own software. Later on I developed a game that I still enjoy playing on the Super Nintendo to this day."

"You've had skills like this, and you are an Apostle of Love?" She said scratching her head.

"This is getting too weird." She thought out loud.

"Shhh... one more decode. I'm trying to concentrate."

This was it, the final code to program the key card we needed in order to move forward.

There are three numerical patterns. Two of which I have no idea if they are going to correctly program this successfully.

But there was one thing I knew and that was to not input the cell doors. While I carefully observed the numbers all around me. The digits all had a number that ended on the third digit. Zeros seemed to always be discounted.

There are nine cell doors in all. All of them begin with zeros.

Typing in the three digit code, I carefully entered.

Zero, one, zero.

"Unauthorized programming." Affirmed the robotic integration.

Okay so we know for sure that a second digit will not equal to ten. What is the pattern that always equals before or after nine if it's not a two digit authentication. Then what is the number needed to access the switch to the engine bay?

Zero.

Zero...

"Buuulllbass." Squirmed Bulbasaur.

I turned to face Bulby with concern.

Is something wrong with my Pokémon?

Ignoring the authentication screen. I leaped across the floor as other concerned Pokémon onlookers grouped around my Bulbasaur in question.

"Hey everyone, out of the way!—

Virginia looked just as concerned.

"What's wrong with your Bulbasaur?" She asked.

I ignored her for the time being. I needed to confirm that my little Bulby was alright.

"Virginia type in zero, zero, zero.."

"Why—

"Just do it!" I shouted hastily.

Waving her hands to try and calm my surprising frustration; she reluctantly did as she was told.

"Uh, okay, uh?"

Clicking the buttons she accidentally slipped her finger across another key. Virginia attempted to open the hatch but she failed miserably after inputting key number two.

"Unauthorized programming. One final attempt."

"You idiot!" I hollered with contempt.

"I'm-I'm sorry, I just slipped." She cried from my aggressive tone.

"Carefully this time. Zero, zero, zero."

"Okay." She nodded.

Sweat continually fell across her face. I could observe how nervous she was while I was attending to my Bulbasaur.

"Hans used security protocols to stop us from escaping. Virginia, I just want you to breathe."

"I'm sorry, I'm literally shaking. What if I fail again?"

She is such a klutz. I thought while rolling my eyes.

"Virginia?"

"Yeah?"

"Virginia?"

"Yeah!?" She squealed.

"Listen to me. It's not that hard, all you have to do is bypass the protocols by typing in on one button only. Zero, zero, zero. We'll be out of here until you do.

Placing her white gloves over the keys. Virginia sweated profusely. Her mind seemed to go blank and her face turned purple after cutting off her airwaves.

She had the correct placement of the key on one of her slender index appendages. Pressing down once activated the first letter to be inputed.

Okay now the second.

Pressing down again brought the second digit.

"Excellent now the final digit."

Squinting as she pressed; she knew that if she got this digit wrong the third time it would be game over and we would be stuck in this vacuum sealed machine forever.

"Okay!" She yelped after pressing down on the final number of the keypad.

"Programming successful! Unlock engine room switch?"

After inputting the final command. The door hatch to the first floor had finally activated with a swiveling sound and a metallic screech.

"Phew." I sighed with relief.

While nodding towards Virginia with a smirk. I then turned my attention towards Bulbasaur. The little teal cretin was trembling viciously like he was doing his best to hold back pain.

"Bulby what's wrong?"

"Buuullbb." He moaned while jostling back and forth.

Just as soon as he moved his legs to find another position. It allowed me to analyze the bulb on his back. The strangest thing I could observe was that his bulb was starting to slant open.

"Is he mulching?" Asked Virginia.

I shook my head from that rude and obnoxious question.

"He's got growing pangs." I smiled.

I then reached down to grab hold of my Pokémon around my arms. Coddling him up against my chest as if I was carrying a newborn. I faced towards the exit door.

"Let's go!" I shouted determinedly.

"Jigly!"

"Char!"

"Rekkeke!" Yelped Rattata.

"Breewwrreeww!!" Howled Pidgey.

As Virginia and the group followed me down toward the engine bay. I turned to the right towards the sound of the grinding metallic noise and to my astonishment. There he was straw-hat in all.

"Leaf?"

"Yellow!"

Only to learn quite clearly that within the engine bay's limited circular space. Red was nowhere within the floor of the Haunebu craft.
