Part 10. Leaf's Determination

Welcome to my world, my name is Leafgreen! We live in a world where people and Pokémon live together in peace and prosperity. A world where challenges and conflict await my emotions.

We had finally arrived in the sparse town known as Pewter City. While exiting the thick forest. I noticed a culture that was quite different in comparison to let's say Viridian and Pallet.

People worked and tilled large massive fields. Many of them were agricultural farmers. And in the mountain peaks ahead in the distance. Was a town nestled along a rocky mountain gorge.

So this is Pewter City? It's absolutely beautiful! I thought while trudging my way up the massive hill.

"The town of agriculture," said Yellow.

"And a quiet city nestled between mountains and rocks," he continued while reading the sign in front of us.

My eyes widened by the sites and sounds all around me. I could smell the powerful aroma of flowers and grain. Wild boar and domesticated Tauro's galloped with swiftness across the massive valley ahead of me.

My fists tussled along my skirt with excitement. We had finally arrived at our location. We traveled a long way me and Yellow. Now our chance to cross paths with Red and Blue may finally come to pass.

Now the next step was finally within reach. In order for me to rank as a Trainer in my home region. I must put my Pokemon battling skills to the test.

"Yellow?" I smiled with determination caressing the rim of my white brimmed hat.

"Uh-Yes?"

"Let's hurry over to the Gym." I shouted exuberantly.

"Whoah! You seem to be in a really good mood? What got you antsy about challenging the Gym so soon?" He asked.

"I want to train my Pokémon to their prime level! This is my chance to show Red and Blue that I mean business!"

Yellow smiled from my wild response. He could tell I was fitting to work hard and to help my Pokemon be the best that they can be.

"I like that attitude, Dodo?" He turned and inquired to his fellow Pokémon Doduo.

"In order to battle the Gym, we'll need to hurry. You up to taking us there Dodo?"

"Kyeeaaa!" Shouted Doduo.

We both nodded in excitement. If I can defeat the Gym Leader of this Town I'll have a chance of catching up to them both. It was only a matter of time.

Yellow clamored across the back of his Pokémon. While I climbed up from behind to lay hold of his waist. We each saddled up for the road ahead.

"Yip-yiup!" Shouted Yellow in command of the reigns.

Kicking against Doduo's body helped leap him into high gear. Dodo's two heads jostled as each were fighting for the spot hunching forward.

Yellow's bird sprung his hind legs swiftly across the rich fertile soil below. Kicking it up in a spiral from behind the bird launched his campaign towards his destination within zero point five seconds.

This Pokémon's speed is incredible.

The Pokémon sped so fast that everything passed from view in a blur.

Feeling the wind draft across our faces. As we danced swiftly towards the mountainous gorge. Avoiding all obstacles in his path.

If I were to guess the speed at which we were going, it would have been faster than a speeding car on a highway.

Such a quick Pokémon to close in on such distances like this. Yellow seriously needs to consider entering Dodo in a racing contest. However, I'm not so sure he's the competitive type. I thought to myself prudently.

But what could you do when you had a friend like Yellow who tamed such a beautiful Pokémon to begin with. His brown, silky soft feather coat was well kept. Breeders themselves would be jealous of this Doduo's looks.

"We are about to arrive at the gym," shouted Yellow in the breeze.

As we passed several buildings we could see up ahead a big stadium that had the look of a massive arch like structure too it. It looked like a warehouse lined with mahogany wood across the rooftop of the building.

"Is this it?" I shouted back.

We closed in on the entrance of the building twenty feet ahead of us. While Yellow pulled the reigns of his Pokémon to steady his pace.

"Whoah Dodo," he squealed.

In my excitement, I leaped off of Dodo's back early. Landing briskly towards the ground . My eyes glistened as I read the bold letters Pewter City Gym lined across the mahogany structure.

They say there is a powerful trainer in that Gym who has the strength of rock. Little did a know that this challenge gave me a quick lump to the throat. He probably must be super tough if they refer to him as the Rock-Solid Trainer.

"Who is the Gym Leader in this town?" I asked.

"Well, I am not sure myself," said Yellow.

Clasping hold of my bag, I felt anxious, like I was feeling a strong aura pierce the very insides of my heart from within the building.

Just how strong is he?

My eyes widened with fear as I cautiously approached the two sliding doors up ahead. As I peered through the glass and could feintly see large boulders inside the building.

Kinda counterintuitive to have a rocky Gym inside a building. But what do I know?

They started to open swiftly. My heart pounded loudly like a belligerent hammer trying to slam a rather irritating nail. This feeling of elite power, were all I could feel emanating from inside these hollowed walls.

Sauntering my way upon entrance of the door. I perceived two stone statues lined along the entrance next to me. Yellow followed after me from within the building.

How really convenient. It felt comparably better to be in a building with such amazing air conditioning.

The stadium was spacious, on each side were lined teal colored like bleachers and a ceiling that rose about twenty feet above my eye line.

It was a big building alright.

There was another thing that held my curiosity. A man that stood by one of the statues wearing as it were, massive goggles upon his forehead. And a rather dusty brown and tan striped tux the man stood at about the same height as the Rhydon statue before him. He looked to either be a bouncer or greeter.

"Welcome to Pewter City Gym," he shouted exorbitantly.

That was a little bit more ceremonious than I was expecting.

"Good morning, I came in to challenge the city's Gym Leader?"

"You mean Brock the Rock-Solid rock type Trainer?" He pronounced with a holler.

Cringing from his response. I nodded in kind with a smile.

"Yes, if that is his name?"

Raising his arms up high he waved them with dubious animation.

"Ah-Ah yes, you may challenge him, seeing how he is the first Gym Leader for those who encounter him on the first round. But I must warn you he is very tough."

My eyes narrowed with directness. I was insistent on challenging any foe that resided in this building. While I feel there is not a lot of battle experience on my belt. This Gym is the only place where I wanted to overcome and train my Pokémon to their peak performance.

"I am ready," I nodded sternly.

"Excellent, a little word to the wise for those who dare to challenge the Rock-Solid master of all! His greatest weakness in defeating his Pokémon are all based on type advantages. Grass or even water should be able to put him in his place. Learn well—

That's it! I thought with excitement.

I can lead with Bulbasaur as my first Pokémon. Rock is very much weak against grass.

Musing over the information that was provided to me, I humbly bowed to my greeter with gratitude.

"Thank you for the information that was very kind of you."

"A lovely girl like you would do just fine. Your first challenger will be against a Junior Trainer." He gestured over to a boy of smaller stature. Wearing what appeared to be a teal scout uniform with a red sash decorated along his collar with merit. Eying me contemptibly while positioning himself a top a boulder. He scowled and sneered upon me with impotence.

"A girl in a Gym like this? Haha! You wish to challenge me before Brock?" He shouted.

What an annoying little kid, I thought with a chagrin.

"Yeah, and what of it?" I retorted as I marched my way over to the stadium floor. Facing him with vexation.

Who does this kid think he is trying to prove with that attitude?

Instantaneously, the lights within the room dimmed. While brightly lit flood lamps shifted their beams towards us contestants. Signifying to the audience that the match was about to begin.

Now mind you, this didn't help my heart at all. In fact, I was extremely nervous about what would happen next. However, I couldn't turn my back now. Not without facing my opponent's challenge.

"You're still light years away from Brock's power!" He spouted with pride.

"If you really want to become a true Pokémon Trainer! Then show me what you got up your arsenal!" He cursed holding a PokéBall toward my defiant direction.

What a firecracker! Does he do this to newcomers all the time? I gritted.

I just about had enough of this kid trying to get me all riled up!

All these emotions of frustration and anxiety did not help my situation.

I marched across the field, clutching my fists together in anticipation of the start of the match. The greeter whom we met at our very arrival approached the middle of the barren field. Openly ready to officiate the beginning of our battle.

"Alright you two relax, the rules are simple. When I move my arm to the count of three the battle starts. You only have two Pokémon to use at your disposal. If you need to switch between your turn be sure to utilize that time before deciding your attack. When all Pokémon have been knocked out that Trainer is the victor."

Raising his arm up in the air the man signified the beginning of the match.

Was I prepared? No, I was definitely not prepared.

I was certain I came ready for the battle at hand that I had literally taken little to no heed about the comparable strengths of my Pokémon. That I was going in with cold feet.

I do have three but can only use two. This isn't going to be good.

With all this mounting pressure on top of me. It sure felt like I may have rushed things quite a bit.

However, I can't turn back now. I gotta concentrate.

"Bulbasaur come on out!" I shouted while throwing my capsule across the field.

The force of the impact released my Pokémon from my capsule in a flash of brilliant light. Immediately and without warning. The ball swiftly bounced back into my hand.

"Woah!" I thought out loud. Convenient, the ball retrieval is this quick? What amazing tech this is!

This exhilaration, this thrill. I've never felt this way before. It's different from battling wild Pokémon out in the field, almost personal..

The Junior Trainer grinned from the reaction of my spunk.

"Hehe! That's more like it!" He countered with a grin.

"Diglett come on out!" Fluttered the Trainer as he threw his capsule forcefully toward the ground.

An instant flash of light had stretched the darkened room and out appeared a Pokémon from his Poké Ball. His form was unique; he looked like he was in the form of a mole.

Although you couldn't see any limbs on this Pokémon's body. Upon closer inspection I viewed no other part from this Pokémon except for his head.

He's burrowed into the ground?

"On my mark three-two-one."

Thus began our swift dance...

"Diglett Scratch!"

The mole like Pokémon slithered his way through the ground approaching my Bulbasaur nefariously using his head to nudge from underneath his paws. The Pokémon took the brunt of the hit quite drastically. Knocking him off balance.

"Bulba's!"

This was my first time fighting a Trainer on my own. I knew within that very moment. Bulbasaur's strength was not up to par with this Pokémon.

"Tackle Bulbasaur!"

Reacting with ease, Bulbasaur swiftly jetted across the ground mobilizing his stumpy legs towards his target. My Pokémon collided against the exposed Diglett on the ground. pounding the Pokémon brutally against the surface.

The officiator gestured his arms briskly toward my direction.

"Diglett is unable to battle, Bulbasaur wins the match!"

The boy winced with an aghast look upon his face. The kinda face you would make when a girl would beat you in a game of wits and chess.

"No way," he paused.

Focusing his gaze away from my direction. He immediately used his Poké Ball to return the injured Pokémon from within. In that moment; he wasn't too thrilled at his first defeat.

"Never thought I would lose to a girl like you on my first round. But you're pretty good." He complimented.

Reaching into his belt pocket he pulled out one last Poké Ball. Tossing it vigorously; his ball jittered along the ground flickering open and within seconds.

Out appeared another mole like creature with coarse brick like skin and a smooth underbelly. The Pokémon did look very adorable on the outside however; he looked tough.

Don't let the cute factor take advantage of you Leaf! I contemplated with scrutiny.

"Bulbasaur Vine-Whip!" I gestured with intent.

The bulbous creature released vines from his round protruding bulb. Independently operating towards his target within the air. Striking vines that indiscriminately clashed against the poor creatures coarse body.

This was a super effective move! Both ground and rock type are weak against grass. If I keep using it. I have a chance at winning.

"Defense Curl Sandshrew!" He cursed with bravado.

The mole like Pokémon morphed his hands and feet from within and curled his body into a rugged ball.

I see, so that's what the Pokémon is called.

I had to hand it to him, the boy was resilient. I never thought he would outlast a powerful move like Vine-Whip. Yet, his Pokémon looks like he's on the tipping point.

He's trying to prolong the inevitable isn't he?
If he uses Defense Curl on me again he may not be around for another turn and yet, if I use my Vine-Whip move again like last time. I may have an advantage.

"You going to make your next move or what?" He yelped impatiently.

"Oh right," I said with a start.

"Bulbasaur one last Vine-Whip," I championed.

After christening the order to strike. My Pokémon wasted no time hurling his vines once more towards his opponent. There were at least five vines that appeared from the bulb walloping the creature without mercy.

The scout barely had any time to shout for his Defense Curl move.

The poor Pokémon gave out a loud shriek as the vines rapidly tossed him several feet above the air. Collapsing toward the ground from the exhaustive barrage of attacks.

"NO!" Shouted the Junior in defeat as he fell to his knees in vanquish.

"Sandshrew is unable to battle, Bulbasaur wins the game!" Shouted the officiator.

I defeated him? I glazed with misapprehension.

Whoah! I never thought battling would be this easy.

Then suddenly, the thrill and excitement soon left me and the feeling of elatedness arrived. Panting with exhaustion and with blood pressure returning to normal.

I felt absolutely stunned. I had accomplished a goal that I never thought would have been possible. And yet, here was the result before me. Thanks to my beloved starter Bulbasaur.

With unexpected adulation. I turned to witness a quiet stadium slowly drawing claps and whistles of excitement from among spectators.

"I knew you would do it Leaf!" Shouted Yellow among them inaudibly.

I couldn't observe any of them, each side was darkened from the flood lights pointing to one spot. Bulbasaur swiveled to face me with a warm smile and congratulating me on the win.

I smiled widely back towards him.

"We did it, we finally did it Bulby!"

This powerful static feeling of victory. I've never had this euphoric feeling before. Like I was wanted, or acknowledged by people who encouraged me.

It felt good...

Is this what it feels like to win a Pokémon battle?

This next obstacle in my path would prove fruitless if I gave up now. I need to play my cards to win this next one. The intimidating aura I felt before I entered this building was still the one battle; I was determined not to lose.
