May’s face was scrunched up in discomfort as she bit her lip and looked away, trying her best not to watch the doctor insert the needle into her arm. She could feel the slight pinch and the faint, uncomfortable pressure as her blood was drawn, and her free hand gripped the edge of the exam table a little too tightly.
Drew stood a few feet behind her, leaning casually against the wall with his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. He watched quietly, eyes flicking between May and the doctor, but he didn’t make a move to come closer. He was trying to look unfazed, but there was a hint of concern in his gaze.
May opened one eye, glancing over her shoulder at him. “Aren't you gonna... help me?” she asked, her voice carrying a faint, pleading tone.
Drew’s neutral expression softened, and he took a step forward, smirking slightly. “Help you with what?” he teased, but his eyes were warm.
May huffed, still looking away from the needle. “You know… say something to distract me! I thought you’d at least hold my hand or something.”
Drew chuckled, moving closer until he was beside her. “Alright, alright.” He reached out, gently taking her free hand in his. His fingers were warm, steady, and his touch instantly made her feel more at ease.
“There. Better?” he asked, giving her hand a little squeeze.
May nodded, relaxing slightly. “Yeah… thanks.”
Drew kept his hand in hers, his thumb tracing soothing circles over her knuckles. “Honestly, you’re doing great, May. And hey, it’s almost over. Just a few more seconds.”
She gave him a small smile, feeling her nerves ease. Just having him close, feeling his hand holding hers, made it all more bearable. When the doctor finally removed the needle and placed a small bandage over the spot, May let out a breath of relief.
Drew smirked, still holding her hand as he glanced at her. “See? You survived.”
May rolled her eyes, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. “Yeah, but only because you finally decided to help.”
