Freshman year (part 11)

'Beep...beep...beep'

the repeating noise continued on and on, the only sound that filled the small room.

'Beep...beep...beep'

That's the sound that kept her mother alive right now. The woman's skin was unhealthy, too pale to be human. Her lips were chapped, obviously needing some sort of water to drink. Her body was cold, her breathing soft and steady.

Dawn held her dear mothers hand as she watched her sleep soundlessly, never letting her eyes glance anywhere else.

'Beep...beep...beep'

Dawn couldn't stop the silent tears from dripping down her face, after her outburst from the sadness, anger, frustration, too many emotions to grip onto. Her mother didn't deserve this, she's the only person in her life that loves her.

"Oh mom...." Dawn whispered, feeling her face scrunch up again from more tears slipping down her face, dripping onto her lap.

A woman came in, approximately around her 50s. The older woman sighed sadly, glancing at the girl with her mother, who was in terrible condition. She felt bad that she had to tell her, but it wouldn't last long.

"Dawn, I'm sorry to say that visiting hours are now closed."

Dawn stared at her mother, slightly nodding her head. She reached over and kissed her mother on her forehead, still holding her hand.

"I'll be back as soon as I can mom, I promise." Dawn whispered into her ear, then turned away and face the nurse, who had a sad expression on her face.

"Do you have a chapel?"

"Yes, it's open 24/7."

"Thank you" Dawn forced a small smile at the kind nurse, who did the same. "I'm very sorry about your dear mother."

Dawn nodded in thank you, then slowly left the room, wishing one last goodnight silently before walking off. Her feet dragged against the white floor, her shoes squeaking ever so slightly from the friction. Her whole body was hunched over, making her look even more tiny than she already was.

Dawn went in, hoping to find some peace and quiet in the chapel they left open. She glanced over the church seats, until her eyes laid on someone. Glancing over, there were a few more people sitting in silence, and her eyes widened in realization.

They were here friends.

Dawn took a few steps, her shoes making the squeaky noise slightly. She looked up to see her friends looking back at her, each expression showing emotion. Her eyes began to fill up, blurring her sight so all she could see were fuzzy blobs.

"Oh Dawn I'm so sorry!" May said, letting her own tears slip as she got up and hugged one of her best friends who couldn't be more depressed than this. It broke her heart to know how much she was going through her life.

Serena started crying as well, followed by Misty and Leaf. Dawn started sobbing in Mays arms, feeling Serena, Misty and Leaf hug her as well, forming a group hug.

"It's gonna be okay, you're gonna make it Dawn I promise, we'll all go through this together." May said, crying with all her heart. The girls just cried for a long time, while the guys felt their hearts ache.

Ash couldn't hold it any longer, he felt hot tears slip down his face. Pikachu chirped sadly, snuggling up on his shoulder to hopefully comfort the boy, the trainer he knew was strong. Gary patted him on the back, blinking his own watery eyes, trying to hold back because crying wasn't manly at all for a guy like him.

Drew stared at the group of girls sadly, slightly slouching on the bench. He didn't understand what exactly Dawn felt, but he could understand being abandoned by a father who wanted him to follow in his footsteps, having the same reputation in the Hayden family, to keep the tradition going. They were a rich family, but he and his father couldn't disagree more on his future. His father still lived in Hoenn, while Drew came to Sinnoh because of the different classes, especially for coordinating. It would give him more opportunities since Sinnoh's contests were very popular, giving him exposure to higher class competition.

With Paul, he sat there, not knowing the pain of a loving mother who was in critical condition. He barely remembered her, before she disappeared when he was 3. He didn't know what happened, and neither did Reggie, but his father was a bastard. He worked for criminal organizations, like team plazma.

He didn't know who Troublesome's mother was, but she was obviously the light to Dawns entire life. If it had been her father in that condition, she might've had a different reaction.

Paul remembered after she had left the van and went into the hospital, he got the whole gang together and they went to see if Dawn was alright. Guess they knew now, and it sent pain throughout his chest.

After a few hours, one by one her friends had to be picked up or leave because it was late. Dawn just sat still, her eyelids starting to close from the tiredness and need of sleep. Her friends wished her hopes and all that stuff before they left, so she leaned her arms and chin against the back of the bench in front of her and closed her eyes.

After a couple minutes of complete silence, she thought she was alone until she heard a few footsteps approach the bench, then the person sat down on the same bench as she was on. Dawn didn't bother looking over, feeling that even opening her eyes was too much work. She flashed back to earlier today, remembering the details.

Dawn approached the desk, her hands shaking a little bit from her nervousness. Since she was short, she had to stand on her tip toes to get the lady's attention.

"Hello, welcome. Is there anything you need miss?" The young lady politely asked the blunette.

"Yes, I was wondering if there was a patient here named Johanna Berlitz." Dawn quietly asked, her voice obviously quivered from her nervousness. The young woman quickly typed in a name on the computer, then after a few seconds she nodded, her eyes showing a bit of sadness.

"Yes, I'm afraid so miss. Could I ask your name and relation to Johanna please before I give details?"

"I'm Dawn Berlitz, her daughter."

"Well Dawn, I'm sorry to say that your mother is in extremely terrible condition from a fatal car crash that could've killed her instantly, but somehow she's managed to still pull through now. The driver, your father John, was very intoxicated with a large amount of alcohol, and crashed into several cars going 70 miles an hour on the main highway, ten miles over the speed limit. I'm very sorry about your mother, we're doing everything we can to make sure she doesn't loose too much blood, or else she'll pass away. I'm truly, so sorry Dawn."

Dawn eyes spilled with tears, anger and frustration flowed through her body. Why did her father do that?!?

"It's not fair! She doesn't deserve this! I hate him, I hate him so much! I can't believe this-I don't want to!! I hate my life and everything sucks for me! She's the only one in my life who loves me! She has to be okay! Nothing's FAIR!! She can't die! IT'S NOT FAIR!!" Dawn screamed in emotional pain, hot tears streaming down her red face. She chucked her phone across the room in anger, not caring that it smashed to pieces and broke. It was a crappy phone anyways. Dawn sobbed, not caring if the few people waiting in the comfy chairs stared at her with understanding her pain.

She sat down on the ground and screamed in agony in her sleeves, not wanting to believe it at all. She rocked on the ground in a ball, uncontrollably breaking down, crying and shrieking.

The young lady instantly got up and ran around the desk to the girl, her heels loudly pounding on the tile floor. She knelt down and hugged Dawn, letting her own tears start to slip out from the heartbreaking sight right in her arms.

"Shhhh, it's going to be alright, your mother is a strong woman. She's going to be happy and healthy soon, she'll pull through everything." She softly said to Dawn, rubbing her back gently with care. She felt a tap on her shoulder and looked up, seeing one of the few patients waiting, holding a box of tissue for them.

"Thank you sir." She whispered, the man nodding in return. They stayed like that for a while, letting Dawn cry until there was nothing left to cry.

Dawn didn't notice she had tears slipping down her face until the flashback ended, feeling the dryness of her eyes sting even more.

She completely forgot about the person sitting next to her until they gently wiped the tears off her face with their black sleeve. Wait, black sleeve?

"Troublesome, why is everything falling apart for you?" The deep voice said, not asking a question but more of a statement.

She looked over to see Paul sitting there, his arms now crossed and his back leaned against the bench. Dawn just shrugged her shoulders, a little embarrassed by the fact that he was sitting there the whole time.

"I don't know, I wish something could go my way for once." Dawn mumbled, closing her eyes again. "There's nothing good in life anymore."

Paul frowned a little, not much of his usual scowl on his face to show a difference. He tried thinking of ways to change the subject, something that was more positive, even though that wasn't his style of thinking.

"What color dress do you have for homecoming?"

Dawns eyes snapped open, completely forgetting that fact. Well, she was fucked.

"I don't have one, so I don't know. Maybe I'll just get a flipping skittles costume so you can choose a damn color from the stupid rainbow." Dawn sarcastically said, looking back at Paul.

Paul smirked, chuckling mentally from the blunette and her sarcastic comment. He shook his head slightly, feeling the tips of his purple hair graze his face.

"It's next Saturday, seven days from now." Paul replied back, looking at the Troublesome girl. He noticed that she was still wearing his coat, the size obviously too many sizes bigger than her.

They say there for a while, Dawn falling asleep first. Eventually, Pauls eyes closed, falling asleep in the same position he was in.
