Frozen 🐧

Kenny guided Dawn to sit on the exam table, his usual warmth replaced by a rare seriousness. His brows were furrowed, and his lips pressed into a thin line as he grabbed his stethoscope.

"Dawn, what were you thinking?" he asked, his tone a mixture of frustration and concern. "It's a blizzard out there! You could have gotten hurt—or worse!"

Dawn winced at his tone, shrinking slightly. "I just... I wanted to make sure you ate, Kenny. You work so hard, and I know you forget sometimes..."

Kenny sighed deeply, shaking his head as he placed the stethoscope over her chest. "Deep breaths, Dee Dee. In and out."

Dawn obediently followed his instructions, though her breathing hitched when he adjusted the stethoscope.

"Your heartbeat's a little fast," he muttered, grabbing his thermometer. "Probably from running in this weather. Open up."

Dawn opened her mouth, allowing him to place the thermometer under her tongue. Kenny kept a watchful eye on her, tapping his foot impatiently as he waited for the reading.

When the thermometer beeped, he pulled it out and frowned. "You're freezing, Dawn. Your temperature's low, and you’re soaked to the bone. What were you thinking running here without proper gear?"

"I..." Dawn began, her voice small. "I just wanted to help."

Her lip trembled, and tears began to pool in her eyes. Kenny’s strict demeanor suddenly felt unbearable, and she couldn’t hold it back any longer.

"I’m sorry, Kenny!" she sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay, and now you’re mad at me!"

Kenny’s eyes widened, the stern look on his face instantly softening. "Oh no, Dee Dee, no," he said, his voice gentle and full of regret. He stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her tightly. "Please don’t cry. I’m not mad at you, I promise. I was just so worried."

Dawn buried her face in his chest, her tears soaking into his scrubs. "I’m sorry," she whispered.

Kenny rubbed her back soothingly, resting his chin on top of her head. "You don’t have to apologize, Dawn. I know you were trying to do something sweet. I just... I care about you, and the thought of you getting hurt scares me."

Dawn sniffled, looking up at him with watery eyes. "You’re not mad?"

Kenny smiled softly, brushing her hair out of her face. "Not even a little. I just want you to take care of yourself too, okay?"

Dawn nodded, her tears slowing as she relaxed in his arms. "Okay, Kenny. I’ll be more careful next time."

"Good," Kenny said, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead. "Now, let’s get you warmed up. No arguments, got it?"

Dawn giggled softly, her cheeks flushing. "Got it, Dr. Kenny."

Kenny chuckled, grabbing a blanket from the supply cabinet and wrapping it around her shoulders. "That’s my girl."

As they sat together in the warmth of the examination room, Kenny couldn’t help but feel grateful that, no matter the situation, they always found their way back to each other.
