Frozen 🐧
Kenny guided Dawn into the green-striped examination room and shut the door behind them with a firm click. He turned to her, his warm brown eyes now sharp and focused, his doctor mode fully activated.
"Sit," he ordered, pointing to the exam table.
Dawn blinked up at him, her cheeks flushed—partially from the cold, partially from his commanding tone. "Kenny, I’m fine, really. You don’t have to—"
"Dee Dee," Kenny interrupted, folding his arms. "You just trekked through a snowstorm to bring me food, and you’re practically shivering yourself into pieces. Sit down, or I’ll carry you."
Dawn sighed, knowing it was pointless to argue when he got like this. She climbed onto the table, her legs swinging nervously as Kenny grabbed his stethoscope.
"Alright," he said, slipping the cold metal into his ears. "Let’s start with your heart."
Dawn flinched slightly as he pressed the stethoscope to her chest, but his touch was gentle. "Deep breath in," he instructed.
She complied, her breath shaky as she inhaled.
"Good. Now exhale."
He repeated the process a few times, his brows furrowing as he listened carefully. Finally, he stepped back, his expression softening. "Your heart sounds fine, but you’re breathing a little fast. Probably from the cold and the running."
"Kenny, I told you I’m okay," Dawn said, though her voice lacked conviction.
"Let me be the judge of that," he said firmly, grabbing a thermometer. He placed it gently in her ear, waiting for the beep before pulling it back to check the reading. His frown deepened.
"99.8. Not a fever, but it’s close. Have you been feeling off lately? Any chills, fatigue, sore throat?"
Dawn hesitated, fiddling with her fingers. "Maybe... a little. But it’s nothing serious!"
Kenny sighed, setting the thermometer aside and taking her hand in his. His tone softened, the doctor giving way to the boyfriend. "Dawn, you’ve got to take care of yourself. Running around in this weather when you’re already not feeling great? That’s reckless."
Dawn glanced down, guilt creeping into her expression. "I just wanted to make sure you ate. You always skip meals when you’re working long shifts, and I..."
Kenny’s stern facade cracked, and a small, affectionate smile tugged at his lips. "Dee Dee..."
He reached up, brushing a strand of her damp hair away from her face. "I appreciate it, I really do. But I’d rather you stay safe and healthy than worry about me. I can survive on vending machine snacks if it means you don’t have to risk your health."
Dawn gave him a sheepish smile. "Sorry, Kenny. I just... I wanted to do something nice for you."
Kenny chuckled, leaning down to press a quick kiss to her forehead. "You’re the sweetest, you know that? But next time, sweetie, call me, and I’ll come to you. Deal?"
Dawn nodded, her cheeks turning pink. "Deal."
"Good. Now," Kenny said, pulling a blanket from a nearby cabinet and wrapping it around her shoulders, "you’re staying here until the snow clears. No arguments."
Dawn snuggled into the blanket, smiling softly. "Yes, Dr. Kenny."
He rolled his eyes playfully, grabbing his food from the bag she brought. "Let me at least share this with you. You earned it."
As they sat together in the warm room, sharing the meal, Kenny couldn’t help but feel grateful. She might drive him crazy with her stubbornness, but Dawn’s care for him melted his heart every time.
