Frozen 🐧

Dawn blinked in surprise as Kenny firmly guided her down the hall and into his examination room. The green walls and familiar pictures of their shared memories seemed almost mocking as she was unceremoniously sat on the exam table.

"Kenny, I’m fine," she protested weakly, though her shivering betrayed her.

"Fine? Dawn, you’re soaked, freezing, and probably running a fever," Kenny said, his voice firm but laced with concern. He grabbed a towel from a cabinet and started gently patting her damp hair. "What were you thinking walking through a snowstorm just to bring me lunch?"

Dawn shrugged, a sheepish smile creeping onto her face. "I didn’t want you to skip a meal. You always work so hard..."

Kenny paused, his expression softening as he looked at her. "Dawn... I appreciate it, I really do. But your health is way more important than my lunch."

She glanced away, feeling both touched and a little embarrassed. "I just... didn’t want to let you down."

Kenny sighed, his hand resting on her shoulder. "You could never let me down, Dee Dee. But I’d rather you stay safe and warm, okay?"

Dawn nodded, sniffling slightly. Kenny frowned and reached for his thermometer. "Alright, let’s check you out. Open up."

Dawn hesitated before letting him place the thermometer under her tongue. She watched him move around the room, grabbing a blanket and wrapping it around her shoulders while they waited.

The thermometer beeped, and Kenny frowned at the reading. "38.5°C. You’re definitely running a fever."

Dawn groaned. "Great. Now I’m officially the sick girlfriend who can’t even deliver lunch properly."

Kenny chuckled softly, kneeling in front of her. "You’re the thoughtful girlfriend who braved a snowstorm for me. But now, you’re my patient, and I’m going to make sure you’re okay."

Dawn’s cheeks flushed, though she wasn’t sure if it was from the fever or his words. "You’re too good to me, Kenny."

He smiled, brushing a strand of damp hair from her face. "That’s my job, Dee Dee."

Grabbing his stethoscope, he listened to her breathing, his brow furrowing slightly. "Your chest sounds a little tight. I’m guessing you’ve been out in the cold for too long."

"Maybe just a little," Dawn admitted sheepishly.

Kenny stood and grabbed a steaming mug from the nearby counter. "Here. Ginger tea from the employee lounge. It’ll help warm you up."

Dawn took the mug gratefully, letting the warmth seep into her hands. "Thanks, Kenny. I’ll be fine, I promise."

Kenny arched an eyebrow. "Oh no, you’re not going anywhere until your fever comes down. I’m prescribing you rest, warmth, and plenty of fluids."

Dawn giggled. "Doctor’s orders?"

"Absolutely," he said with a grin, pulling a chair closer to her. "And I’m staying right here to make sure you follow them."

As she sipped the tea, Dawn felt her heart swell with gratitude. Snowstorms might be cold, but Kenny’s care was enough to melt away any chill.
