🐧 dentist
" Dawn. Hey, Dawn. Wake up, Dawn."
Dawn moaned in her bed. " What Kenny?" She asked, clutching her jaw under the blanket.
" We have to go, Dee Dee."
" Where?" She muttered.
" The dentist."
Dawn froze. If the dentist found out about her tooth....
" Kenny, schedule it for another day, I... I don't want to go."
Kenny studied her for a moment.
Then he sighed. " Wait here."
Dawn didn't even move.
Kenny slipped off her bed and walked out.
Dawn prayed he would leave her alone.
He did not, unfortunately.
He came back with dentist tools.
Dawn nervously peeked out of her blanket. " Kenny, this isn't necessary."
Kenny rolled his sleeves up slightly and gave Dawn a look. " Dawn, you've been acting weird when it comes to your mouth the past few days. This has to stop."
Dawn shook her head. " Bu-"
" You trust me, don't you?"
Dawn nodded reluctantly. " Unfortunately."
" Then trust me on this. Please."
" Found the issue."
Dawn, who was propped up in pillows, had her eyes squeezed shut and prayed Kenny hadn't found the actual issue.
" Your tooth is crooked because of your fall last week."
He found it.
" How did yo-"
Kenny cut himself off as he observed Dawn's expression. " Wait... You knew, didn't you."
Dawn remained silent.
" Oh, Dee Dee. Don't you know you should tell someone when this happens. I can fix it, thankfully, but it might hurt a little."
Dawn's eyes widened and she shook her head rapidly. " No, Kenny, plea-"
Kenny took her hands. " You trust me, don't you?"
Dawn looked down. " More than anyone."
" Then trust me on this. Please."
Dawn bit her lip, looking away from Kenny’s pleading eyes. Her fingers trembled as they clutched the blanket tighter. "But what if it hurts, Kenny? I don't like pain."
Kenny's voice softened, his grip on her hands firm but comforting. "Dawn, I know you're scared, but I promise, I'll be as gentle as possible. If it hurts too much, I'll stop immediately. Deal?"
She hesitated, her gaze flickering between Kenny’s face and the small tray of tools he had set up. "Do we really have to do this now?"
Kenny gave her a crooked smile. "The sooner we take care of it, the better you’ll feel. I don’t want you to be in pain any longer than necessary."
Dawn let out a defeated sigh and nodded slowly. "Fine. But if I cry, it’s your fault."
"Deal," Kenny said with a grin. He helped her sit up straighter, propping a pillow behind her back. "Alright, Dee Dee, open up for me. Let’s see what we’re working with."
Dawn hesitated but finally parted her lips. Her heart raced as Kenny gently tilted her chin up and peered into her mouth.
"Yep, there it is," he muttered, grabbing a small mirror tool. "Your fall knocked it slightly out of alignment, but it’s not too bad. I’ll just adjust it back into place. You’ll feel some pressure, okay?"
"Pressure?" Dawn’s voice was muffled, her jaw barely moving as she spoke.
Kenny chuckled softly. "Nothing scary, I promise. Just a little push to set it right."
She squeezed her eyes shut, gripping the edges of the blanket tightly. "Just get it over with."
"Alright, Dee Dee. Deep breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth," Kenny instructed, his tone calm and soothing.
Dawn tried to follow his advice, though her breaths came out shaky.
"Good girl," Kenny said, placing a gloved hand gently against her jaw. "Here we go."
The pressure was immediate, and Dawn whimpered, her nails digging into the blanket. Kenny’s free hand found hers, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Almost there," he said, his voice steady. "You’re doing great, Dee Dee. Just hold on a little longer."
Dawn’s eyes watered, but she focused on the warmth of Kenny’s hand in hers. Before she knew it, there was a soft click, and the pressure eased.
"Done!" Kenny announced, stepping back and beaming at her.
Dawn blinked, her hand flying to her jaw. "Wait… that’s it?"
"That’s it," Kenny confirmed, pulling off his gloves. "See? Told you I’d take care of you."
She moved her jaw experimentally, relief washing over her as the discomfort that had been plaguing her for days was gone. "It… it doesn’t hurt anymore."
Kenny ruffled her hair playfully. "Told you to trust me, didn’t I?"
Dawn gave him a wobbly smile. "Thanks, Kenny. I… I was really scared."
"I know," Kenny said softly, sitting beside her. "But you were brave. And now you’re all fixed up."
She leaned against him, her tension finally melting away. "You’re the best, Kenny."
"Always," he said with a grin, wrapping an arm around her. "Now, how about some ice cream to celebrate? Doctor’s orders."
Dawn laughed, the sound light and free. "You always know how to bribe me."
"And it always works," Kenny teased, helping her off the bed. Together, they left the room, the earlier tension nothing but a memory.
