Dawn swallowed nervously, gripping the blanket tightly. Kenny's reassurance helped a little, but the thought of anything hurting her already sore tooth was terrifying. She gave a hesitant nod, her voice barely above a whisper. "O-Okay... but be careful, Kenny."
"I will, Dee Dee," Kenny said gently, pulling a chair closer to her bed. He laid out the tools on a small towel and adjusted the lamp on her bedside table to shine light on her face. "Let me know if it gets too uncomfortable, and I'll stop. I promise."
Dawn shifted uneasily, feeling the cool metal of the dental tools against her lips. She opened her mouth reluctantly, her heart pounding in her chest.
Kenny worked slowly and carefully, his movements deliberate. "You're doing great," he said, his voice soothing. "Just a little more, and I'll straighten it out."
Dawn winced as a sharp twinge shot through her tooth. She instinctively grabbed his wrist, her eyes filling with tears. "Kenny, it hurts!"
Kenny immediately stopped, his expression softening. "I know, Dee Dee. I'm sorry. Take a deep breath. We’re almost done."
Dawn tried to calm herself, her breaths shaky. She trusted Kenny—she really did—but the pain was making her second-guess everything. Still, when he gently squeezed her hand and gave her a reassuring smile, she nodded again, silently giving him permission to continue.
With a delicate touch, Kenny adjusted the tooth back into place. Dawn whimpered but stayed still, her hands clutching the sheets tightly. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Kenny set the tools down and sat back with a relieved sigh. "There. It's done."
Dawn cautiously closed her mouth, her jaw feeling tender but noticeably less uncomfortable. She stared at Kenny, her eyes wide with a mixture of gratitude and disbelief. "You... you really fixed it?"
Kenny grinned, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "Told you I could. How does it feel?"
"Better," Dawn admitted, her voice hoarse. She hesitated, then added, "Thank you, Kenny."
He leaned forward and kissed her forehead again. "Anytime, Dee Dee. But next time, promise me you'll tell me if something's wrong. I can't help you if you don't let me."
Dawn nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "I promise."
