Dawn's shot

Dawn could feel her teeth chattering. Her fingers were playing with the helm of her dress, and her heart was thumping in her chest, ready to burst. Her nose took in the sharp smell on sanitizer, and she gulped.

" No need to worry, no need to worry." She kept muttering to herself.

But she couldn't stop worrying.

Because what was behind that door.... She dreaded.

She watched kids and adults go in, smiling and coming out... Smiling.

But she couldn't bring herself to do that.

She didn't hear the chatter, everything warping in her brain.

Then, someone stuck their latex glove covered hand to her

She looked up to see her Auburn haired boy.

She had never seen Kenny in blue medical scrubs, and it worried her.

Kenny smiled warmly at her. " Come on, Dee Dee. It's not that bad, I promise."

Dawn took Kenny's hand shakily, and he pulled her up and took her through the doors.

They walked through a large hall, but Dawn didn't notice.

She was too busy looking at the ground, praying something happened so she wouldn't have to do it

" Dawn? Earth to Dawn? Are you okay?"

Dawn's gaze snapped up to Kenny, who was looking back at her concerned.

" No need to worry...." She managed to whisper.

Kenny didn't look convinced, but he didn't question anything.

He took her to a room, and opened the door, pulling her in.

Green walls, green examination table, green everything.

Even the tray was green

The only thing that wasn't green was the bandaid layed on the tray, and that was blue

" Sit up here, Dee Dee." Kenny instructed, patting the table

She slowly crawled on and sat, looking at her fingers.

Kenny threw his gloves away, washed his hands, and took new gloves out, pulling them on his hands.

Then he looked at his girlfriend, who looked like she was ready to cry

" Aw, Dawn...." He muttered, grabbing her hand. " It's just a small needle, I promise. It won't hurt."

Dawn shook her head, tears already forming. " It always hurts, Kenny. No matter what."

Kenny’s heart broke at the sight of her tears. He crouched down in front of her so they were eye level, his gloved hands gently taking hers. "Hey, hey, look at me," he said softly. "It’s okay to be scared, Dee Dee. But I’m here, and I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you. You trust me, right?"

Dawn sniffled, her eyes locking with his. "I trust you," she whispered, though her voice trembled.

"Good," Kenny said, his warm smile never faltering. "We’ll take it slow, okay? No rush. You’re in control here."

Dawn hesitated but gave a small nod.

Kenny stood and moved to the tray, carefully picking up the syringe. He turned back to her, showing her every step. "See this? It’s just a tiny little thing. And it’s only going to take a second. After that, you’ll be done, and we can get ice cream or something. Deal?"

Dawn’s lips quirked up at the mention of ice cream. "Promise?"

"Promise," Kenny said, holding up his pinky.

She managed a watery laugh and hooked her pinky with his.

Kenny walked back over, setting the syringe down for a moment. He grabbed a small alcohol wipe and gently took her arm. "Okay, this might feel a little cold," he warned before dabbing her skin.

Dawn flinched slightly, but Kenny kept talking, his voice calm and soothing. "You’re doing amazing, Dee Dee. Just keep breathing with me. In... and out. Good."

He picked up the syringe again, his movements deliberate and unhurried. "Alright, here comes the tiny pinch. Hold my hand if you need to, okay?"

Dawn gripped his free hand tightly, her fingers trembling. Kenny gently pressed the needle into her arm, his thumb steady as he administered the shot.

"Done," he said brightly, capping the needle and setting it aside.

Dawn blinked, her tears drying as she realized the pain had been far less than she’d anticipated. "That’s it?"

"That’s it," Kenny confirmed, grabbing the blue bandaid from the tray. He smoothed it over the injection site with care. "See? You were so brave."

Dawn looked at him, her lips curving into a shaky smile. "Thanks, Kenny."

He leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Anytime, Dee Dee. Now, about that ice cream…"

Dawn laughed, the weight of her fear lifting as she hopped off the table. "You better get me the biggest sundae they have."

Kenny chuckled, lacing his fingers with hers. "Anything for you."
