Chapter 3 - Encounter

"Phanpy, phan!" Phanpy leaped onto my lap. I chuckled and patted it.

"Chi!" Chikorita tackled Phanpy playfully.

"Phanpy!" Phanpy tackled Chikorita back, sending Chikorita flying.

I managed to catch Chikorita and I smiled at Phanpy. "You are a strong one, aren't you?"

"Phanpy, phan!" Phanpy said.

I grabbed out my Pokédex and pointed it at Phanpy.

"Phanpy, the Long Nose Pokémon. Phanpy uses its powerful snout to express affection, not realising its strength can send you flying," my Pokedex reported.

"Ah, no wonder," I said as Chikorita and Phanpy chased each other in the Pokémon center, annoying the people in it.

"Chikorita, Phanpy, return," I said as my Pokémon returned to their Pokéballs.

"Well, it's about time I get going. I should also practise using my Pokémon in a battle," I mused.

Of course, I'm not going to get anywhere if I stay in the Pokémon center all day thinking.

I walked out of the Pokémon center and headed to towards the forest, hoping to practise catching a wild Pokémon.

"Hey!" someone ran towards me.

"Yes?" I asked questioningly.

"I want to battle with you," the boy seemed like a new trainer like me, and his eyes shone eagerly and hopefully.

"Please?" he begged. "It's just a simple one on one battle."

"I suppose," I said. "Let's go to the side of the Pokémon center to battle."

"Race you there!" the trainer still sounded like a kid even though he's supposed to be old enough to go on a journey.

I walked myself there and stood at one side of the battlefield. "Which Pokémon are you going to pick?" I asked.

"My one and only Totodile!" he shouted, throwing his Pokeball. A blue and red Pokémon appeared put of it.

If I remember correctly, Grass types are strong against Water types.

"Chikorita, I choose you!" I said as I threw Chikorita's Pokéball.

"Chiko!" Chikorita said.

"I'll start," the boy said immediately. "Totodile, use Water Gun!"

"Chikorita, dodge it and use Tackle!" I ordered.

Chikorita obeyed and managed to dodge the Water Gun attack. Chikorita then sped towards the other trainer's Totodile.

"Totodile, dodge it!" he shouted.

"To? Totodile!" his Totodile tried to dodge but Chikorita had managed to tackle it.

"Quick! Use Razor Leaf!" I shouted.

Chikorita swung its leaf that is on its head and sharp looking leaves were fired at the Water type Pokemon.

Meanwhile, the boy seemed panicky and was looking at his Pokédex frantically.

"Use Water Gun to counter!" he said, just in time.

"Keep using Razor Leaf, Chikorita," I said, suddenly feeling calm and warm, as if I had just drank a nice warm soup my mother would prepare for dinner in winter.

Chikorita's Razor Leaf attack burst through the Water Gun and Totodile was hit.

"Totodile!" Totodile cried, collapsing on the ground.

"Totodile get up!" the trainer shouted anxiously. "Get up now!"

"Totodile had just been hit by a Tackle attack and a super effective Razor Leaf," I said reasonably. "It can't continue, even if it does, it wouldn't be able to take another hit."

"You won this time!" the boy yelled so harshly that it made me flinch. "I will beat you one day!"

He grabbed his injured Totodile and ran off.

"Chi?" Chikorita stared at me with a confused look.

I shrugged. That boy had serious mood swings, and he needed to know that winning isn't everything.

"Phanpy, phan!" Phanpy burst out of its Pokéball, beginning to chase after Chikorita with a delighted cry.

Seeing the happy faces of my Pokémon, I felt myself smiling as well. I felt like the luckiest person in the world to have such great Pokémon.

However, all good things have to come to an end. The smiles vanished from our faces when a frightening familiar figure charge towards us.

"Chikorita, Phanpy, stay behind me," I whispered as I looked into the familiar black beady eyes of a Pokémon that injured Chikorita around half an hour ago.

"Salamence," I gasped.

It roared, causing the ground to tremble at our feet. It pinned me down with one paw, staring at me, as if it was scrutinising me.

It felt like the last time, expect this time, the feelings were different. Fear didn't fill my body this time. Only thing I felt... was anticipation.

"Chi?" Chikorita questioned.

"Phan," Phanpy said.

I didn't reply, only bending up slightly and I gave the menacing looking Pokémon a hug.
