Chapter 20 - A Frozen Disaster
That night, I couldn't fall asleep. I was feeling very tired from training with my Pokemon a few hours ago. Maybe I was thinking too much to sleep.
I tried sleeping on my right - I usually sleep on my left - but to no avail. Frustrated, I got out of my bed.
I rubbed my eyes sleepily and looked out of the window. I saw a huge lake, which reflected the stary night like a mirror.
The lake must be the town's water source, I guessed, but I can't be too sure.
I was about to head back to my bed to sleep but I saw something werid. Part of the lake was frozen and I was very sure that the lake wasn't like that a minute ago.
Additionally, it's not even snowing. Something is wrong here, I thought suspiciously.
I walked out of the Pokemon centre, saying a tired greeting to Nurse Joy as she attended to some trainers who just brought their Pokemon to her.
The wind blew as I began walking to the lake to check things out. I shivered and continued walking.
When I reached the lake, it was totally frozen. I gasped - something must have caused the lake to freeze, but what?
Suddenly, I heard a crack. A Pokemon brust through the ice and swam towards me, easily cutting through the ice with a Slash attack.
It's a Sharpedo! I thought.
When I looked at the charging Pokemon again, I spotted another Pokemon on it.
I took out my Pokedex to check. "Lanturn, the Light Pokemon and the evolved form of Chinchou. Lanturn's antennae light is strong enough to penetrate the ocean and any seam of the water's surface."
I switched my attention back to the Sharpedo with a Lanturn on it. It was getting dangerously closer to me. Sharpedo were also known as the Brutal Pokemon, feared by many who are unlucky to meet them in the water.
Could I run? I wondered, hesitating.
Before I could reach to a decision, the Sharpedo crashed onto dry land. I jumped back, ready to run if either Pokemon was going to attack.
"Sharpedo!" it said.
That was when I noticed Lanturn was injured. Sharpedo must be asking me to help it!
"I will get Lanturn to the Pokemon centre," I told the Dark and Water type Pokemon swiftly as I gently carried Lanturn in my arms.
It's burning up! I realised, my heart pounding with fear and worry as I ran to the Pokemon centre.
It squirmed around in my arms and it let out a weak Ice Beam. "Don't worry, once I bring you to Nurse Joy, you will feel better."
"Lan..." the Lanturn sounded like it is in a lot of pain.
Almost there!
I brust through the doors of the Pokemon centre and I nearly crashed onto the counter.
"Nurse Joy!" I gasped. "You need to help this Lanturn!"
"Chansey, bring this injured Pokemon to the emergency room immediately," Nurse Joy said.
Chansey brought out a cart and I gently laid Lanturn on it.
"Will it be okay?" I asked.
"We will do our best," Nurse Joy told me, disappearing behind the doors.
Waiting for Nurse Joy to be done was a torture for me. I felt very restless, too anxious to keep still.
I began to ponder about the incident. That Lanturn knows Ice Beam... and it is injured... Could it be the one that froze the lake?
Maybe, I thought. But it wouldn't explain why Lanturn got injured.
A several agonising minutes later, Nurse Joy came out of the emergency room.
"How's Lanturn?" I asked immediately.
"It is fine, but it needs a lot of rest," she replied calmly. "It took a lot of damage and caught a fever."
"Damage?" I questioned. "A Pokemon did this?"
"Yes," Nurse Joy said. "It is most likely a super effective move. Lanturn may have ran into a hostile Pokemon and got into a fight."
Nurse Joy's words reminded me of the Sharpedo that brought the injured Lanturn to me. Could Sharpedo be the one who attacked Lanturn? If that was so, it wouldn't explain Sharpedo's actions.
I yawned. It was still nighttime, so I decided to go to sleep. After thanking Nurse Joy for helping Lanturn, I half dragged myself back to my room.
Before I drifted to sleep, a shocking thought came to me.
What if it is a trainer's Pokemon that injured Lanturn?
