"Begin!" the referee called as the person hit the drum.

"Hoothoot, use Tackle!" Falkner said, making the first move.

"Chikorita, use Razor Leaf to counter!" I called.

As razor sharp leaves go closer to Hoothoot, the Owl Pokemon dodged and managed to land a hit on Chikorita.

"Chiko!" Chikorita cried as he was flung to the side.

"Chikorita, get up," I encouraged the Grass type Pokemon.

"Get that Grass type Pokemon with your Peck attack!" Falkner shouted.

Chikorita couldn't dodge in time and was hit by the frenzy of Peck attacks.

I know that I could tell Chikorita to use Ancient Power, but if it misses, it will be all for nothing.

"Hoothoot, now climb to the air for your final Tackle attack!" Falkner called.

This is the chance! I thought. But I need to be very precise or Chikorita would get knocked out.

"Chi..." Chikorita readied himself.

As Hoothoot flew closer and closer, I bit my lip nervously. Just a little closer...

"Quick, Chikorita, use Ancient Power!" I called, but I was too late.

Chikorita was hit and that could be the final one he can take. Luckily for me, Chikorita managed to use Ancient Power just in time and it had hit its mark.

Both Pokemon were flung backwards. The referee checked the battlefield before announcing, "Both Chikorita and Hoothoot are unable to battle. Please send out your second Pokemon."

I quickly rushed over to Chikorita's side. "I'm sorry," I whispered, feeling guilty. "I didn't react fast enough. Return and get some rest."

After returning Chikorita to his Pokeball, I walked back to my side of the battlefield.

"Honestly, I was surprised that your Chikorita knows a Rock type move," Falkner said as he returned his Hoothoot back to its Pokeball. "That was a lucky shot - you wouldn't be as lucky as that in the next round."

"I will try my best," I spoke up, but not feeling as confident as I was in the first round.

"Dodrio, let's go!" he said, sending out his next Pokemon.

I quickly pulled out my Pokedex."Dodrio, a three-headed Bird Pokemon that can run faster than it can fly. Its three heads represent joy, sorrow and anger."

"So, it can't fly?" I asked.

"My Dodrio can," Falkner said with a confident smirk.

"Phanpy, I choose you!" I said.

"Phan!" Phanpy said.

"You may have the first move this time," the gym leader said.

"Okay," I replied. "Phanpy, use Rollout!"

"Dodrio, dodge it by flying!" Falkner commanded.

As Phanpy neared the three headed bird Pokemon, Dodrio jumped so high that it seems like flying.

So that's what Falkner meant.

"Now use Drill Peck!" he shouted another command.

Dodrio's three becks became drill-like and the Pokemon began running at top speed towards Phanpy.

"Phanpy, use Take Down!" I called, hoping Phanpy was able to use the move.

Phanpy charged towards Dodrio, but instead of sending the Pokemon flying, Phanpy ran past Dodrio, seemingly unable to turn past.

Phanpy skidded to a stop, only to be hit by Dodrio's Drill Peck.

"Phanpy!" I cried.

"Phanpy, phan!" Phanpy said, standing back up.

"Dodrio, use Fury Attack before it can recover!" Falkner shouted.

"Phanpy, use Defense Curl, quick!" I said, thinking quickly.

Thanks to Phanpy's added defence, the attack power of Fury Attack was not as much.

"Use Rollout now!" I said.

"Phan!" Phanpy managed to hit Dodrio with a super effective Rock type move. It's strength was also doubled because Phanpy had used Defense Curl.

"Not bad, but can your Pokemon keep up with the speed?" Falkner began. "Dodrio, use your Agility!"

"Phan?" Phanpy looked at Dodrio as it ran past it, faster than before.

"Use Tri Attack!" he ordered.

Why am I not surprised?

"Phanpy, use Rollout to dodge it!" I called. "Then head towards Dodrio!"

A plan was forming in my head. I just hope it would work.

"Dodrio, jump to dodge it!" Falkner ordered.

"Phanpy, use Ice Shard now!" I ordered.

The sharp pieces of ice caused Dodrio to stop its attack. Now's the chance!

"Phanpy, finish Dodrio off with Rollout!" I said.

However, Falkner wasn't done. "Dodge Dodrio, and use your Agility!"

"Phanpy, keep using Rollout!" I called. As Phanpy tried to match Dodrio's speed with Rollout, Falkner had called out another command. "Use Tri Attack!"

Dodrio's Tri Attack hit Phanpy, which sent Phanpy flying towards me.

"Phanpy, get up!" I said anxiously.

"Phanpy, phan!" Phanpy cried, still ready to fight, but had taken a lot of damage. I had to finish this fast, or I will be dangerously left with one Pokemon.

But what can I do to counter Agility?

Suddenly, I realised something. Whenever Dodrio uses Agility, Tri Attack would come up next! Which means I have to tell Phanpy to strike just as Dodrio is about to use Tri Attack!

"Phanpy, use Ice Shard!" I said.

Before the three headed Pokemon could react, it was hit by many shards of ice.

When Dodrio was distracted, I called Phanpy to use Rollout again. This time, it landed a direct hit on Dodrio.

"Dodrio, counter the attack using Fury Attack!" Falkner shouted.

I told Phanpy to use Ice Shard again. Phanpy got the hint and used Rollout without me telling it any commands.

Finally, Dodrio collapsed. "Dodrio, get up! Come on," Falkner said.

"Let's go, Dodrio. Let's go, Dodrio," the other people said.

Dodrio struggled to get up, but collapsed again, this time, knocked out.

After clarifying that Dodrio was knocked out, he announced, "Dodrio is unable to battle. Phanpy wins."

"You did it, Phanpy!" I said.

"Phan!" Phanpy said happily, but then flopped down tiredly.

"Take a good rest," I told it, returning the Pokemon back to its Pokeball.

"You are better than I expected," Falkner said from the other side. "But this ends now. My last Pokemon will win the battle."

"Pidgeot, I choose you!" he chose his last Pokemon.

"Salamence, let's win this battle together!" I said, sending out the Dragon type Pokemon.

The two part Flying types stared at each other, waiting anxiously for their trainer's commands.

"Pidgeot, use Quick Attack!" Falkner made the first move.

"Use Steel Wing, Salamence!" I called.

As the two flying Pokemon clashed with one another, one could tell that it would be a difficult battle for me to win.
