2. The Day

The alarm went off, waking Beth from her deep dream. When she woke up, she rubbed her eyes. Seeing the day on the calendar nailed to the wall, she started jumping for joy.

Today is the day.

She had spent the past few days helping her father out fishing, without even batting an eyelid so as not to be suspicious. Finally that torture would come to an end, she would set out on her Pokémon journey.

She opened her closet. In a drawer was a battered trainer backpack, but it was better than nothing. He checked that her clothes were ready.

Among the pile of clothes was a coach's shorts, sports shoes and gloves.

"I can't believe that day has finally come!", Beth said to herself cheerfully.

She looked at Gold's poster on the wall. He was dressed in his champion robes, together with a long red cloak. Beside him was her companion, Typhlosion. She pointed at him and gave a high-five.

She looked at herself in the mirror. She couldn't go down with that countenance if she wanted to deceive her parents. She began to change her features to simulate tiredness and messed up her locks of pink hair.

She opened the bedroom door and went down in her pajamas.
Upon arriving in the living room her father watched TV from the sofa. Antony looks at her, his expression changes to concern.
"What was it, daughter, are you feeling well?"

"I think not". She started coughing. "I am in no mood and feeling a little weak."

"Isn't it better to call a nurse Joy ..."

"You don't have to!" she replied with alarm. "I mean, I think it's just tired from working too much. I just think it's a shame because I won't be able to go with you today ...".

"You don't have to worry, your health is above anything."
"Thanks".

She gave her father a tight hug and he looked at her suspiciously.
"Are you really okay? It's not like you're hugging me."

"I reflected a lot and it's good to enjoy the company of the people we love as long as we can."
On TV, a presenter talked about the newspaper stand. She sat next to her father on the couch.

The sketch changed to a reporter who spoke to an elderly man:
"A Goldenrod resident claims to have seen suspicious people wearing Rocket team uniforms."

She gave the microphone for him to speak:
"I saw it with my own eyes, they are coming back, believe me ..." said the paranoid man.
"All this is all right. It must be some kind of trick that someone played, there is no chance of those bandits coming back after what happened in the radio tower ..." her father spoke beside her.

"Breakfast ready," she heard her mother speak from the kitchen.
He turned off the TV with the remote and went to sit at the table.

Beth went to the kitchen and faced Estefania's condolent look and sermons that had overheard her conversation with her father: "You who dare not leave the room, young lady!"

Beth gave her mother a tight hug, which at first was surprised, but returned.

The coffee was an omelet with honey nectar. They sat down at the table and started eating the meal.

When finished, her father said goodbye and left for another day of fishing. He gave him another hug before leaving.

He ate his omelet and went back to the room. As she passed the room, she stroked the hair of the Growlithe running around the house.

She arrived in the room, closed the door and exchanged her pajamas for her trainer clothes which consisted of comfortable shorts, sports shoes and light cotton shirts. She tied her pink hair in a ponytail with a bow. She also picked up a wristwatch, after all any trainer should have a way of knowing the time.

She opened the closet. In her backpack she organized a map of the updated version of Johto, a wallet with all her savings and a few more change, a bottle of water, a screwdriver, some cereal bars and sunscreen. After finishing everything, he prepared to say goodbye to his room.

"I will miss you..."

She sat on her bed and took out a sheet of notebook to write her farewell letter.

"Dear mom and dad.
I know you only want the best for me, but my destination is other than fishing. I understand that the activity is a custom in our family, however I was born to be a Pokémon trainer.
Probably after reading this letter you will be worried, but please don't come after me.
Also forgive some acts that I will commit in the quest to achieve my dream. I ask you to keep a tender memory of me and continue to lead your life as it has always been.
Oh, and I also took all the money from the safe, I hope you understand.
Beth. "

Beth put the letter on the bed.

She opened the bedroom windows. It was a bright and bright day, the perfect day to start your journey. The Pidgeys sang and a group of Hoppips floated through the air with the breeze of the wind.

She took some sheets from her closet and tied them up to form a large escape cloth. She tied it over the crevice of the bed and started backpacking down the window to the floor.

As she descended, she looked both ways, making sure no one had seen. Then she left for Professor Elm's laboratory.
️️️
The lab was not far from her home. After advancing four blocks she arrived at the site. Upon reaching the laboratory, she surrounded him until she reached a window at the back. The space was small, I was sure it was humanly impossible for an adult to enter the place, yet Beth was as thin as a toothpick. The window was ajar so she hadn't bothered to break in.

That Elm never learns.

He thought that after the case of a Pokémon theft by a mysterious trainer a long time ago he would be more careful, but luckily she was wrong.

Upon entering, she walked down corridors and sneaked through bookshelves, taking care not to be seen by one of Elm's assistants.

She looked at the room where Elm was located. He seemed to be giving instructions to three new coaches who listened carefully.
It can't be, it was the only thing she could think of.

After hearing about the day Harold would receive his Pokémon, he hoped he could get the opportunity to steal one of the other initials for himself, but his plan had run low. If three coaches would start their journey that day, there would be none left.

She concentrated to hear what the professor was saying.

"I bet you are eager to start your journey for Johto, but first there is an extremely important choice to make. The Pokémon world is full of dangers and having a companion during your journey is essential! So, before starting your journey day you will have to choose between one of the initials that I have here with me ".

He looked through a passage in the bookshelf and saw the professor remove three Pokémon from his Pokémon.

"These are Chikorita, Totodile and Cyndaquil".

Pokémon responded with animated grunts.

She controlled herself on tiptoe to get a better look at the coaches.
There were three, two boys and a girl. The girl had blond hair tied with two heart-shaped pigtails and looked at the pokémons with a silly smile. The second was a short boy with red cheeks and starched black hair. She was sure she had never seen them in New Bark, they should have come from another city.

The third was the despicable figure, as usual. Harold was her archenemy since she had laid eyes on him. The boy was part of a middle-class family that had moved to New Bark only a few years ago, but it was long enough to direct all his contempt at him.
He was always bragging about "how his family had money and was superior to others" because they lived in Gold's old house in the city. Besides, he always looked at her with scorn, calling her "daughter of the fisherman" and saying that Beth stank of Magikarp.

The three began to approach, petting the Pokémon.

"Malli, you can be the first to choose among pokémons".
The girl named Malli looked at the three pokémons looking at them. She stopped and stared at Cyndaquil for a while.

"I already chose! I feel that Cyndaquil's energy hit mine, that's what I want".
The Pokémon jumped on her lap.
"I'm going to call you Spark!" she said laughing and spinning the Pokémon.

Harold looked uncomfortable with the situation and was frowning. He noticed that he had a beret on his oily brown hair, which made him look even more preppy.

"Freddy, you're next ..." The professor didn't even finish speaking and the little boy ran to catch the Totodile that was swinging in his arms with joy.
"I always wanted to have a

Totodile" he sang.
"And Harold, you have Chikorita left," said the professor.
Harold walked slowly over to the Pokémon.
"I really wanted a Cyndaquil, but you should do it, I think ..." Chikorita seemed to understand what the boy had said because she looked hurt.

The teacher returned the pokémons to the pokéball then gave it to its owners.

"I think this is where we say goodbye. I wish you luck and that you can achieve your dreams and create genuine bonds with your Pokémon. I give you the task of capturing as many Pokémon as you can. You know, the more information to put in pokédex better! You can send them to me through any PC located in Pokémon centers. Any questions ask a nurse Joy ".

Elm picked up the three Pokédex on a table and gave them to each one.
Professor Elm went on talking endlessly, giving advice and warning about how long grass areas were dangerous and which cities had gyms and how to get there. When he finished the three left with their new Pokémon companions.
Beth waited for the professor to leave the laboratory room where he was and left for another compartment where the other researchers were.

She looked at the nothing.
Don't even think about it, now that I got here I'm not going out empty-handed.
She entered the room where the three pokémons had been recently and searched the metal drawers and compartments for something. In the desk drawer there were three pokéballs, without even thinking about it she picked them up and put them in her backpack.

She snuck out of the room and wandered some more down the halls of the laboratory. She found a room covered with transparent glass. She looked through the clear glass and could see a set of Pokémon eggs nestled in cribs. She opened the door to the room and stepped inside.

As she approached the cribs, she could see that the eggs contained different colors.

This came out better than the order, she thought as she noticed how lucky she was.

Her backpack was full but there was still room for an egg. She chose one with brown polka dots and prepared to pick it up when the alarms went off.

She put the egg in her backpack and ran running towards the window she had entered.
Several red lights were flashing and she could hear footsteps behind her, looking back, while she did what she could to get through space.

As she left, she ran as far as she could towards Route 29, bumping into anyone who appeared ahead. And that's how she started her journey.
