CHAPTER 23 - CONQUERING THE NIMBASA SHOWCASE!
Previously in Pokemon Chaos and Order...
Ash, Serena, Nate and Dawn participated in a yearly festival that takes place in Nimbasa City, called the Amour Festival, where people buy or make gifts for their friends and their Pokemon.
Serena and Ash went to the Nimbasa City shopping Center alone, and might've considered this as a date.
.......................................................................
Our heroes are now at the Nimbasa City Pokemon Center. Serena is standing with her Pokedex next to the Nursery desk. It seems like she's debating something.
After a few seconds of thinking, and encouraging smiles from her friends, she walked forward and laid her Pokedex at a platform near the counter. The platform scanned her Pokedex and displayed her information on it.
"Serena Yvonne from Aspertia City..." said the Nimbasa City Nurse Joy. "All set! I'm happy to say that your entry into the Pokemon Showcase Rookie Class is complete! Best of luck!"
Serena smiled as she retrieved her Pokedex. "Thanks!" She giggled before turning to face Ash, who just smiled and nodded. She then knelt next to her Pokemon. "Eevee, Pancham, Fennekin, Piplup..." she said. "Are you ready?"
They all nodded while letting out their cries. Serena smiled back at them and returned the four to their Pokeballs. "It's your first Performance!" Ash said in an encouraging voice as she stood up. "I know you're gonna be great!" Said Dawn. "I know it doesn't get underway just yet... but are you ready to go?" Nate asked.
"Yeah..." she said. "But a little bit more practice couldn't hurt! I have to work just as hard as Ash to be successful!" "You're gonna be great!" Ash encouraged. "Give it all you've got and I know you're gonna win!" "Right!" She nodded.
Nate then stretched his arm upwards while letting out a silent yawn. "If you're gonna participate in the Showcase we better get some rest..." he stated. "I mean it's happening tomorrow to end Performing Week..." everybody agreed as they went up to their rooms, ready to take a good night's rest.
The next day...
Nate's suggestion of going to sleep earlier sure came in handy, as the four were practically up and about when the sun has only begun to shed its rays across the Region.
They got dressed for the day and started to head towards the Nimbasa City Musical Theater, where the Pokemon Showcase is set to take place.
Ash in particular was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of people who were participating. 'Check it out...' he thought as he was looking around. 'These people seem like they've been training their whole lives to enter a Showcase... I hope Serena can pull it off with the limited amount of training she did...'
He is snapped out of his thoughts once he accidentally bumped into someone. It was a girl with light brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing an orange, sleeveless vest with a black collar and a white stripe in the middle. She had black shorts, orange shoes, a green bandana and two white gloves.
"HEY!" She roared. "WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING KNUCKLEHEAD!" Ash jumped backwards, surprised by the hostility in the girl's voice. He was about to stutter out an apology but was stopped by Dawn walking forward.
"DAWN?!" The girl yelped in surprise. "It's good to see you too May, but I wish you could be a little less angry around my friends..." Dawn replied. The girl scratched the back of her head in embarrassment.
"Sorry for being so hostile..." she apologized. "I have a little anger problem..." 'Yeah I noticed...' Ash thought to himself. "Anyways, I'm May Birch..." she extended her hand to shake Ash's. "Ash Ketchum, and this is my partner Pikachu..." he replied as he shook her hand.
"These are Serena and Nate..." Dawn introduced May to the rest of the group, causing May to shake both their hands. "So, are you in the Showcase too?" She asked Serena.
"Actually, I am!" Serena replied in a happy attitude. "Not for long you're not..." she heard a sinister voice coming from behind her. She jumped backwards and turned around, only to see...
"MIETTE?!" She squealed. "That's me..." Miette replied with a smug expression on her face. "And so I hear that you indeed decided to go all the way and participate in the Showcase..."
Serena put on a confident face. "Indeed I did..." she said. "And if you have a problem with this then too bad!" She crossed her arms. "I have no problem with this at all..." Miette tried to sound as calm as she could.
Serena was confused. "You're not...?" She asked in a confused tone. "Not at all..." Miette replied. Before anyone could walk up to their destination, Miette whispered something into Serena's ear.
"If I had a problem with that it would mean that you stand a chance against the likes of me..." she whispered in a sinister and overconfident tone. "Having you as my rival will only make me look better in front of Ash..."
Miette started to prance away from the group, walking like a super-model. Serena's face went red, both from embarrassment and from anger. "Grrr... THAT MIETTE...!" She gritted her teeth.
"Why are you so angry at Miette all the sudden?" Asked Ash, who was clueless about Miette's true colors. 'Oh I have an idea...' Nate thought. Serena shook her head. "I'M NOT MAD AT HER!" She yelled. "LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD ALREADY!" She angrily stomped towards the theater, with everybody shortly behind her.
Once they got to the main hall, Ash, Nate and Dawn took their seats while Serena and May went backstage to wait for the Showcase to begin.
Once there, she noticed many other Performers. And just like it was previously stated by Monsieur Pierre, not all the performers were female, though Serena could only see one guy there.
The one boy there had green hair and green eyes. He was wearing a black, long-sleeved shirt under a purple sleeveless vest. He had bluish-green long pants and black boots. He was holding one red rose, and was kneeling next to a Roserade.
"Whoa..." Serena said. "I have so many rivals..." May was a bit distracted to hear what Serena was saying. She was staring at the boy with pink cheeks.
He turned to look at the two and noticed that May was staring at him. He chuckled and gave her a wink. May's whole face then went red. Serena noticed May blushing and chuckled to the sight of that.
"Try not to get overwhelmed okay...?" Serena said in an encouraging tone. "SHE'S RIGHT!" The two heard a voice from behind them, startling them both. "TRY TO OVERWHELM THEM INSTEAD!"
The two turned around to see a woman. She had short, purple hair that was covering half of her face, with the other half being covered by a big yellow mask. She wore a big purple dress. She had a golden necklace and matching golden wristbands.
The woman chuckled while walking past the two. "Make way, your new Queen is coming through..." she said in a smug tone as the two tried to relax.
After a couple of minutes, Ash, Nate, Pikachu and Dawn were sitting down in the middle of the audience, waiting to see Serena in her big moment. Suddenly, the lights dimmed and the spotlight was turned on. "Showtime!" Nate whispered.
"Bonjour people of Unova!" The audience heard a familiar voice speak. "Devoted fans of Pokemon, the Nimbasa Rookie Class Pokemon Festival Showcase, the celebration of beginnings, is about to begin! With grace and elegance!"
Monsieur Pierre then appeared in a puff of smoke, just like a magician. "I will be your guide through this splendid dreamworld!" He said as he took a bow. "I invite all of you at home, as well as here in the audience, to be part of this beauty, unsurpassed anywhere else!"
He continued. "Our talented performers, and their Pokemon partners, are insured to fill each and every one of your hearts with magnificence, awe, and delight!"
Serena was looking in a mirror and making last-minute adjustments to her performance outfit, which she fashioned from parts of the dress Ash bought her, and the outfit she wore as "Princess Eevee" in the productions of the Brycen-Man movie. She also decided to add the Basic Badge she won back in Nuvema Town to her outfit, as a reminder of her own inner strength.
'Just take deep breaths Serena...' she thought while doing just that. 'This is not your first time on stage. Compared to starring in an actual big-budget film, this should be a piece of cake...'
Before anyone could say anything Monsieur Pierre explained the rules of Pokemon Showcases. "A Pokemon Performer who wins a Showcase gets awarded with a Princess Ribbon. Whichever Performer wins three Princess Ribbons will be allowed to compete in the Master Class! And whoever wins the Master Class, will be awarded the title of the first ever Unova King or Queen!"
Pierre continued. "Each Showcase has three rounds. A Baking Round, where the Performers show their skills by baking Poke-Puffs. A Fashion Round, where the Performers show their originality by showing off their Pokemon's outfits. And finally, A Battling Round, where the Performers show the strength of their Pokemon in a new and elegant way!"
"Like Combo-Moves..." Ash murmured. "If the Battling Part has anything to do with them, Serena's got this in her pocket!" "I hope she does..." a familiar female voice spoke up, startling Ash.
"E... Ellie..." he stuttered as Ellie sat down next to the group. "Wha... what're... what are you doing here?" He asked, still shaking. Ellie, surprisingly enough, smiled at Ash. "I'm just here to enjoy Serena's Performance!" She said.
"Now let me introduce our first batch of Performers for the cooking round..." he lightly tapped his cane on the floor, raising three platforms with kitchen tables, ovens and a full set of supplies for baking cookies.
"Presenting... May Birch, Miette Mielfui, and Drew Berrymore!" Pierre exclaimed as causing three spotlights to shine on three different people, May, Miette and the boy May was eying.
"Unfortunately, only one of these talented Performers will be able to advance to the second round..." Pierre said with a sad tone. "But the losers will receive a participation trophy and will not be forgotten! LET'S BEGIN!" Pierre suddenly disappeared into another puff of smoke.
After 10 minutes of the three baking with the help of their Pokemon, the time was up and it was now time to test the Poke-Puffs. May's Poke-Puffs were blue and cream-colored. They were mainly vanilla flavoured but had a hint of Straw-Berries in it.
Drew's were green, cyan, red an yellow. They were patterned like flowers and had sprinkles on top. Miette's were pink and white. They had chocolate frosting and a Cheri-Berry on top.
Best pic I could find of Poke-Puffs...
After the judges past commentaries to each other, it was decided that Miette was the winner of the first round, disappointing both May and Drew.
The Showcase kept going like this. Three Performers at a time would get on stage, do what they needed to do in that round for 10 minutes, and eventually one of them will be chosen for the next round. The Showcase started with 18 Performers and 6 of them advanced to the Fashion Round (Serena included). Then out of the 6, only 2 advanced to the Battling Round.
And now the stage was set for the Battling Round of the Nimbasa City Pokemon Showcase.
Once again, Pierre appeared to the crowd in a puff of smoke. "All of the Performers who showed their grace were absolutely magnifique!" He stated. "But now it's time to choose out of our two finalists, who will be the one to win the Nimbasa City Princess Ribbon!"
Two platforms were raised from under the ground, revealing the two finalists of the Nimbasa City Pokemon Showcase: Serena and Miette. Pierre got to the Referee stand. "This will be a one-on-one Pokemon Battle!" He exclaimed. "However, unlike normal Battles, it is not necessary to knock out your opponent's Pokemon, only to get more points than them..."
Serena and Miette stepped forward. Miette was the first one to spring into action. "SLURPUFF! LET'S GO!" She said as she hurled her Pokeball forward, releasing a pattern of gold stars and red hearts as Slurpuff was released, to the shock of the audience.
"Incredible ladies and gentlemen!" Pierre exclaimed. "Miette has already stylized her Pokeball! If the judges agree, we must give her 2 points for originality right from the start!" Pierre pointed his cane to a score board, showing Serena's and Miette's faces above a black screen with yellow "00" on them.
One he pointed his cane at the screen, the 00 on Miette's screen changed into 02. Serena was a bit frustrated, but she didn't let her anger control her. She calmly grabbed her Pokeball while taking a deep breath.
"ALRIGHT EEVEE! I CHOOSE YOU!" She exclaimed while hurling her Pokeball upwards, releasing her Eevee, who decided to show the audience its dancing skills.
Pierre nodded and pointed towards the screen again. This time the 00 on Serena's side changed into a 02, which infuriated Miette. Pierre spun his cane around before slamming it on the ground while exclaiming, "BATTLE... BEGIN!"
"Alright Slurpuff, let's kick her out of the competition with DRAIN PUNCH!" Miette commanded, causing Serena to gasp in worry.
Slurpuff's nub became surrounded by a black orb with blue-white sparkles, outlined in green. It then charged at Eevee and punching it, causing green, sparkling energy to appear on Eevee's belly, which fly back towards Slurpuff in an orb, bathing it in a sparkling green glow.
Eevee was struggling to get up, as it had its energy drained by a Super-Effective move. The 02 under Miette had turned into a 05 for being the first one to make a move that hit. Serena tried to keep her cool, and thought of a way to get her more points.
"ALRIGHT EEVEE! LET'S PUT OUR TRAINING TO THE TEST!" She exclaimed, causing Eevee to get up. "USE SWIFT SAND!" She commanded. Eevee's tail became surrounded by a white outline as it jumped high, drawing a circle in the air with its tail.
Once it landed, a patch of sand appeared on the spot it landed. Eevee then turned to face Serena and spun around, kicking the circle and the patch of sand, causing a stream of sand, surrounded by golden stars with a blue outline, to be thrown at Slurpuff.
The sand hit Slurpuff in the eye, causing a drop in accuracy while the stars were scattered around Slurpuff's body, sending it flying backwards. The judges were impressed by this and the 02 under Serena jumped up to a 07.
Miette once again gritted her teeth. "ENERGY BALL!" She commanded. Slurpuff the shot a green ball of energy towards what it thought was Eevee, when in reality it was just a part of the Battlefield.
"NOW EEVEE! USE QUICK ATTACK!" Serena commanded. Eevee then became surrounded by a white outline before charging at Slurpuff with incredible speed, making twists and turns along the way to show a dance move.
The 07 under Serena was replaced by a 10 as soon as Eevee slammed into Slurpuff. This caused something inside Miette to snap. "USE PSYCHIC! NOWWWWWW!" She roared her next command. Slurpuff struggled, but opened its eyes, revealing that they're glowing blue.
The sand on Slutpuff's face was then surrounded by a blue outline before moving on its own away from Slurpuff's face. Then not a second later, Eevee became surrounded by the same blue outline as it began to float.
"YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WIN!" Miette growled. "I'M GOING TO MAKE SURE OF IT! DON'T STOP SLAMMING EEVEE!" She commanded. Using only its mind, Slutpuff made Eevee gloat high up in the air, before dropping it to the ground with incredible force over and over again, causing Serena to lose points.
"EEVEE!" Serena cried out in worry. "PLEASE STOP THIS MIETTE! I'LL QUIT THE SHOWCASE! I'LL DO ANYTHING YOU WANT! JUST PLEASE STOP!" Serena's begging went on deaf ears for everyone in the audience, the sounds of her yelling were muffled by the sounds of her Eevee slamming down on the ground.
Miette however heard her pleads, causing her to grin. After one more slam, she ordered Slurpuff to let Eevee go. "EEVEE!" Serena rushed towards her injured partner and taking it in her arms.
Imagine that Fennekin is Eevee...
The audience were flabbergasted by Miette's brutality. Ash and Pikachu however, were at the verge of tears. Pikachu in particular was crying inside its mind for Eevee to be okay.
Serena didn't utter a word, but she began to sob. Tears were streaming down her face and slowly but surly landing on Eevee's cheek. "I didn't want this to be this way..." she whispered, her voice filled with sadness.
"I never imagined that you'd get hurt like that... maybe Miette was right... maybe I really don't stand a chance against her..." she silently whispered.
The judges were about to declare Miette as the winner when suddenly Eevee's body flashed pink for a split second, while red hearts and golden musical notes surrounded it. Once the flash was gone, Eevee shot its eyes open and jumped out of Serena's hands, not willing to give up.
Everybody was stunned by what just happened, except for Nate apparently. "Well what'd'ya know..." he said. "Finally Eevee has a heart's worth of affection towards Serena..."
Serena was about to tell Eevee to stop since it's very badly injured, but Eevee decided that enough was enough and used Baby-Doll Eyes on Slurpuff, causing it to hesitate to attack something so cute. Serena's points went back to 00, but after Eevee's sign of affection, it went back to 01.
Eevee then shot a look at Ash's Pikachu, who was smiling and trying to encourage it. It then turned back towards Slurpuff and before Miette could give out another command, Eevee's body became outlined in white, before charging at Slurpuff with unbelievable speed, colliding with it in the stomach and sending it flying towards the wall.
Slurpuff hit the wall so hard it broke a little, and as soon as the dust settled, it was clear that Slurpuff could no longer continue, causing Miette to lose all her points. "SLURPUFF IS UNABLE TO CONTINUE!" Pierre exclaimed. "EEVEE IS THE WINNER! MEANING THAT THE WINNER OF THE NIMBASA CITY POKEMON SHOWCASE... IS SERENA!"
The crowd erupted into applause as Eevee rubbed against the leg of a stunned Serena. Serena started to cry again, but these were tears of joy, as she couldn't believe that she had done it. Pierre then walked up to her and gave her the Princess Ribbon.
Pierre then told everyone about the location of the next Showcase, which would be in Mistralton City, before bedding the people "Ao revoir!"
As soon as Serena spotted Ash, Nate and Dawn, she rushed towards them and brought the three into a tight embrace, letting all her tears flow.
"YOU WERE INCREDIBLE SERENA!" Ash was the first one to speak once the four separated. "EEVEE BEING ABLE TO TAKE ALL THESE HITS...!" Nate began. "WAS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!" Dawn finished. Serena just thanked them as the four started to head to the Pokemon Center.
Once there, Ash pilled Serena aside yo talk to her in private. "Serena, I wanted yo give you this..." he said while pulling out something from his bag. It was the gift he got from the store clerk the previous day. Serena tried to hesitate but Ash insisted.
"I opened it and saw it was a blue ribbon..." Ash said. "And I want it to be a symbol. A symbol that states, 'No matter if it's rainy, sunny, hailing or during a sandstorm, don't give up 'till it's over!'" Serena smiled. "Thanks Ash! I'll cherish it forever..."
