Individual Review of All My Gratitude by ImberLapis

All My Gratitude is a short story expressing how much Cynthia is thankful for her sister. Now, when I think of Cynthia, the awesome champion of Sinnoh, I always picture her as strong, and with a soft side, and the author does just that to show off both sides. How does Cynthia begin her love for battling? That's where the author begins a unique tale, explaining how her sister Cia was the one who was there to give Cynthia her love for Pokémon battling.

Years pass by, and Cynthia and Cia are finally going to meet up once again. Because of it, Cynthia wants to show her appreciation for all that her sister has done for her because without her, Cynthia would have never become the champion everyone loves. But how does Cynthia find such a gift to show how much gratitude she has for her sister? That's the tale the author tells, and seeing the adventure Cynthia goes to, it's so heartwarming to see come to life.

What I absolutely love about this story is how unique it is. Usually Pokéfic are about adventure, with daring battles, or about a romance that makes the reader fall in love with the two lovers. This story doesn't do that. Instead, it tells of a different adventure, one that is guided through Cynthia's need to show her thanks to her sister. This theme is heavily stressed and easy to connect with. We have all gone through times when we wanted to show appreciation to someone, but showing how much we appreciate someone for what they did can be hard.

This internal struggle is shown nicely, as it makes Cynthia think more of the gift she'll give to her sister. Their sisterly love is so strong that Cynthia wants everything to be perfect. This theme that has been woven into the story just warms up the heart.

Another thing that I enjoyed through the author's writing style is that it's easy to tell when the story is being told through a flashback or through the present. By using italics, it is easy to see that Cynthia is thinking back on her childhood with her sister, or is reflecting on what has happened. It adds an element that shows Cynthia really does care for her sister and will put a lot of time into coming up with the perfect gift for her sister.

With all these good things the story has going for it, I only find fault in the punctuation. It's very limited, but it's still there. For example, using double punctuation marks at the end of a sentence, like the following: "'Wasn't that awesome?!' Cia exclaimed"' shouldn't be used in that sense. When writing, two punctuation marks shouldn't be used, even if both are appropriate to use. During this time, it's up to the author about which punctuation mark to use, whether it's the exclamation point or question mark. It's understandable that the author wanted to stress how excited these characters were in a scene, but it's still incorrect grammar.

Other than that, there's not much more that can be said of what needs to be improved on. After all, the characters' motives are pure, and there is no need for a "villain" per say. Since it's a story about gratitude, there is no need for an external conflict, rather, an internal conflict that shows through the characters as they are family members and love one another very much. I love that while they love each other, they each have their own personality, which shines through. Whether it's through battling or through simple dialogue, the fact that they are still different shows that they are each their own person.

Cynthia, for example, has a hunger to learn and cares so much for her sister. Her sister is a joyful character who is easily excited and has a love for everyone. Their grandmother is very methodical and is very mature in the sense that she knows how everything will play out. With these three personality types, it can be easy to see how conflict can arise in Cynthia to get the perfect gift, even though family love perseveres through it all.

In most Pokémon fanfiction, battles are stressed a lot. This story doesn't have much battling in it as it only comes up in a flashback between Cynthia and Cia. Through this battle, it explains why Cynthia loves battling, strengthening her bound with her sister. If there was more battling, the book wouldn't be as interesting, being that Pokémon have another purpose in this story: aiding Cynthia on her quest to find the perfect gift for her sister. Being that this book is more about the relationship between characters, and telling a heartwarming story that way, battles aren't really necessary, yet it's still a wonderful read. It shows that you don't need epic battles for a wonderful fanfic to be told. This story is just so unique that it's bound to fill the heart with joy by the time one is finished reading.
