One of the many things I love about summer is the amount of time I have to catch up on books both on Wattpad and off. My library is filled with books, some of which the writer is in the middle of writing, while others are just books I've yet to find time to read. With so many good Pokéfics on Wattpad, it's nearly impossible to read 'em all.
That's what summer is for. To give you an idea, here is a list of a majority of the books I've been reading over the school year and hope to read more during the summer. This list is compiled of books that are still being written, so if the writer decides to drop his/her work, then that is completely understandable.
Pokémon: Grim Gold by Your_Last_Word
This book has a loveable main character, Akio, who has been thrown into a mess of sorts. Team Victorus has taken over Johto, and the entire region has fallen under a warzone. While this book is about war and has a bit more violence beyond Pokémon battles, it has a good amount of humor in it and is very enjoyable to read. The current length is 25 chapters.
Aftermath by UnisonRaider
If you haven't read The World Without Them by UnisonRaider, then it's highly encouraged to read that one before this one. The last book left on a cliffhanger (one of which I will not say what happened) that left me wanting more. I'm so glad the author decided to create a sequel to help us readers figure out what happens next. The sequel is just as loveable as the previous book, leaving me at the edge of my seat every time I open a new chapter. The current length is 9 chapters.
The Isles of Gracidea by Cora-chan
Outside of Pokéfic, I love reading books with daring sword fights and far-off lands, and this book does exactly that. The author has created a new world filled with pirates, magicians, thieves, and of course, Pokémon. What I love is that this new world doesn't have gym battles but follows a pirate on her thrilling adventure. I always get so happy when I see this book update. The current length is 17 chapters (this doesn't include the prologue, disclaimer, and glossary).
My Name is Loto by ImberLapis
From the author who brought you Heart of Steel comes another thrilling adventure inspired by Cora-chan's Isles of Gracidea. Filled with a new cast of characters and a different adventure, this book follows a magician who has lost his memory. Even with the limited chapters, the book is already off to an amazing start. The current length is 2 chapters (not including the prologue and disclaimer before it).
Hero Born of Darkness by TheRisingFlame
This book is very long, but I started reading it when it the first few chapters were released. I've never played the Sun and Moon games, but even so, this book is very easy to follow. It's about a boy, Zeno, who's trying to run away from his old life in Kanto, but things have a way of coming back around when he realizes Alola isn't as sunny as it looks. With just one more arc to go in the book, I'm very excited to see how the author pulls everything together. The current length is 66 chapters (not including a few author's notes).
Battle Scar by Cryobeats
Hoenn is one of my favorite regions, and having a book taking a much darker twist to the Ruby and Sapphire games is very interesting to read. It would be one thing to just have battles in the book, but the author uses elements not usually seen in Pokéfic that often, such as the Battle Chateau. It's very interesting, and with the multiple storylines that are going on, I'm curious to see how the intertwine with each other. The current length is 11 chapters (not including the prologue and author's notes).
Pokérus by PKMNmianna
The Pokémon Virus, Pokérus, is something that is hardly seen in Pokéfic. The concept of using that as the main source of conflict is a unique idea, and the pace is wonderfully set out. I'm looking forward to every chapter that is released. The current length is 9 chapters (not including the prologue and character information).
For Her Hand by LittleTyrunt
First off, the romance in this book makes me fangirl harder than any Pokéfic has ever done before. I absolutely adore Seth and Allie's relationship...er...what little there is as they really don't get along at first. These characters couldn't be any more different, yet so similar. It's beautifully done. I'm so looking forward to seeing if they end up together or not, being as it's a race to figure out who will win the Pokémon League, and therefore, win Princess Allie's hand in marriage. The current length is 40 chapters (not including the prologue).
Jaded by WriterRaichu
I don't know what I can say about this other than the fact that this book really shows the hardship that people don't always show. I've already cried while reading this book, but in a good way. It's a heartwarming tale that follows a girl name Jade and her unique Shinx, as the girl's off on her Pokémon journey. The current length is 15 chapters (not including the prologue).
Those are all the books I've been reading and am waiting for updates on. If the writer so chooses not to update anymore, it's understandable. I'm just happy that the writer could share just a little bit of the storylines that have happened. Regardless, if they do update during the summer, it can be guaranteed I'll be reading it as soon as I find time.
There's more than just unfinished books I plan on reading this summer. There are a few finished Pokéfics that have weaseled their way into my library that I've yet to open due to time. Now, I really don't have that excuse. I'm exciting to finally have the time to read the following books during the summer.
Muma by irideae
This one-shot won 3rd place in its category during the 2018 watties. I've been meaning to read it since then as the book as seems very mysterious and interesting. There's been a lot of high praise given to this book as well, so I'm excited to see what the hype's all about this summer.
My Friend From Hoenn by PKMNmianna
Being a book set in the Hoenn Region, I'm excited to read it. It features my favorite rival pairing from the games: Brendan and May. While there is a warning that this book is a sad story (whether it be a tragedy of some sort, or just not a happy ending), I'm looking forward to reading it.
Symbiont by UnisonRaider and justcallme_b (current account flyphoria ?)
This book has always been in my library, so how I've yet to open the book is beyond me. Regardless, this book seems very interesting as it follows the battle frontier brain, Anabel, which is something I've never really seen before. I'm excited to see what kind of adventure she goes on and plan on reading this one soon.
There are a lot more books I plan on reading, but these are the books I'm needing to get to. Let's be honest, my reading list keeps growing every day as I find new books I want to read. I'm very excited to finally have time to read as there are so many great Pokéfics here on Wattpad. Just gotta find 'em all!
I have less time to read than most during the summer due to the fact that I still have to go to work for forty hours a week. Tis the sad reality of adult life.
Even so, I do have a list of books that I'm saving up for as soon as I have the time, and, who knows, with any luck, I'll get around to them in the coming few months. I also have two books that I've started reading already and am waiting on further updates for, so I'll start with those.
Pokémon: Grim Gold by Your_Last_Word
I'll admit it; I'm a sucker for Johto. Seriously though, this book caught my attention with its well-written and attention-grabbing description. Add to that the fact that there's neither mention of romance nor a romance tag and that the first chapter takes the attention that was grabbed and runs with it, and now you've got me hooked. It's a book with an original plot that's targeted towards an older audience in terms of its themes and realism, and it's got a strong enough narrative drive to keep things moving along. It made a great binge read until I had to stop and wait for unpublished chapters to come out!
The Deranged Kanto Kid by Typovo
One of the things I love about reading is the opportunity to see the world through other people's eyes. A really great book can make you empathize so perfectly with the main character that you get an idea of what it's like to be that person, or at least to be walking around the world inside zir shoes. And of course, this tends to work the best when you have an author who really knows how to portray that character.
This is a mature book, but it's mostly mature due to its depiction of mental health issues, which, for me, is actually one of the major attractions. It also has a plot that's far removed from the unimaginative cookie cutter plots you sometimes see with Pokémon fanfics. It's definitely a breath of fresh air, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
The rest of these are books that I put on my list because they look interesting to me, but I haven't actually started them yet.
The Thief of Skystead by first-place-ace
If there's another thing I love, it's finding great new Pokémon fanfics when the author is new to the website and completely undiscovered. As I'm writing, this completed fifteen part book has just 15 reads on the entire thing. What do I find interesting about it? Well, for starters, the description is free of errors! Besides that, it seems to have an interesting main character who gets himself into an interesting situation, and that's enough for me to give it a fair shot.
Another Verse by Farla_Blackdragon
I put this one on my list after reading Junie's recent review and the subsequent comments by the author. It sounds like it's going for a nuanced take on the traditional Pokémon journey, and I'm honestly curious to see how effective it might be and what I end up thinking of the book compared to Junie.
The Sea Guardian by annaa-xx
This has actually been hanging out on my reading list for... maybe years. I can't even remember when I added it and why, but I do remember that it really appealed to me at the time, and it still looks interesting enough that I want to give myself the satisfaction of having the wait finally pay off.
My Name is Loto by ImberLapis
Why this one? Mostly because Imber's a cool person and Heart of Steel was pretty good. I don't read everything by her, but this one seems like it's worth a look in terms of my personal tastes. I haven't read Cora's book that it apparently borrows the setting from, so we'll have to see if that works out or if I'll end up reading two books for the price of one or something.
Astral Genealogy by SGmijumaru
This is the one book that I feel like I just have to read this summer. I started reading this when the book was in its infancy, merely a few chapters deep, and it totally grabbed me with its interesting and unique world. I felt like I was going to get completely engrossed and read it non stop but then life got in the way. Being at uni doesn't leave much time for reading and so sadly, I put this one back on the shelf. However, with a summer of freedom approaching, I cannot wait to pick this back up and dive back in.
Swanna Girl and Braviary Man by JunieWeathers
I love superheroes. This book looks like it's about superheroes. I feel like there is very little explanation need here. As someone who's been tempted by the genre before and been dying to write a superhero book of my own, it's really exciting to see someone else try and take on the genre. I honestly have no idea what to expect from this book, having never read anything by the author before, but it's one of those books that I've seen on Wattpad and just wished I had the time to immerse myself in it.
Heart of Steel by ImberLapis
I doubt I'll have the time to read this much, but on the off chance that I do, this is a book I feel very inclined to read. This book seems to be like the Blue Lightning of the modern Pokémon Wattpad community era (which is a thing I just made up). Everyone seems to have read it and everyone seems to like it. I honestly feel guilty for not having read this yet. Why am I so mean to Imber? What did she ever do to me? Why haven't I read this book yet? I don't know, but I have a feeling I might learn something from this book, and that is reason alone to give it a go.
The World Without Them by UnisonRaider
This story caught my attention right after I joined Wattpad, and I've been wanting to read it ever since. Its unique take on the Pokémon world is what brought me in the first place, something that I've been looking for for some time now.
The Isle of Gracidea by Cora-chan
The reason is the same as said above: the story has an eye-catching setting. I am a fan of pirate life myself, and I would like to see a story taking the similar yet unique take on the world of Pokémon.
A Serene Adventure in the High School of Ash by StreetRacer-Sam
I checked this story once on fanfiction.net, and it seemed promising but it had a lot of errors, namely grammatical errors, poor sentence structures, poor execution of a great idea and continuity issues. I once again ran into it after joining Wattpad, and I was surprised to see the improvements the author has made over time. I would like to check it out once again over summer break when the author is finished with the rewrite but may skip it depending on the circumstances.
I found the following stories in the GRA's Member Favourites list and want to read them completely out of curiosity. I may possibly leave them for later if I don't have enough time.
Heart of Steel by ImberLapis
Bonds by Cora-chan
Hail to the King by LogicalCabbage
The Golden Throne by Vespin
Equinox by LynxusNaturae
I'm reading this fic already, and I have to say it's worth the sporadic updates. The author's skill at creating entertaining, loveable characters and her writing style in general make Equinox a fun read. It's a bit of a cookie-cutter story right now (traveling through Alola and participating in island challenges...), but there's hints of a more complex story line that make me want to read on.
Forged in Fire by prism_soul
Another fic I'm currently reading. Forged in Fire is a unique take on the typical Pokémon journey fic. It follows the story of Mr. Fuego's daughter (Mr. F owns Fuego Ironworks in Sinnoh), after her mother is injured and can no longer provide for the family. It's interesting seeing the author's take on Pokémon training as not only a journey but also as a career. Unfortunately, this story is currently on hiatus, although it may be resumed in August.
Paradise by Dictator-chan
I haven't read this one yet, but I've skimmed through several pages, and the dry humour seems right up my alley. I'm a little iffy about how political ideas are presented in this work, but I'm still curious as to how they'll fit into the Pokémon theme.
The Golden Throne by Vespin
I read this last year and never got to finish it. It's a fun read, from what I can remember: high stakes, plenty of plot twists, considerably well-written romance... The author's writing style is compelling, especially during battle scenes, and his grasp on characters provides a likeable cast. I'd really like to see how this story ends—Hilbert's been through enough.
The Isles of Gracidea by Cora-chan
I've been keeping up with this fanfiction since its publication, for good reason. The story takes place in a fantastical world of floating islands, flying ships, and magic, following a runaway pirate and the Shaymin she's trying to hide. The world building by far is the best part of the work—it's phenomenally detailed, going so far as to include fictional languages and even a history of various countries. It's clear that the author's put a lot of work into planning, and I can't wait to see how everything plays out.
