(2) Bulbasaur Come Home!

Bing! Bong! Bing! Bong!

Binnng!

Red looked through the window again. "Anybody home?" He reached for the door handle, surprised to find it unlocked. "Huh?! It's open!"

He pushed open the door completely, standing at the entrance to a very cluttered room. Books were laying everywhere; Poké Balls were scattered throughout; boxes covered the ground before him.

"Oh... w-wow..." he came inside and looked around. He saw a wall in the back full of Poké Balls, all of them containing a different Pokémon. "I never knew there were so many Pokémon..."

His gaze fell on a Poké Ball laying on a table. "What's this one?" He wondered aloud, picking it up to have a better view.

He noticed a label on the side of the Poké Ball, and read it. "Bulb...a...saur." He smiled and peered closer at the tiny Pokémon through its Poké Ball. "It has a bud on its back! Cool!"

Suddenly Red got an idea. "Look at this, Poli." He held up both Poké Balls to each other. As he watched the two, the Bulbasaur suddenly began to panic.

Red suddenly felt a presence in the room; he was so longer alone.

He slowly turned around and noticed a tall man looming over him.

"You... you... Poké Theif!" The older man shouted, running towards Red.

Red began to back away. "W... wait, n-no... I... I... I mean I..." he tripped and fell on to a control panel, pressing a few buttons by accident. "Waaa..."

"No, you idiot!!" the man yelled, enraged.

"Wh- wh- wh-?!" Red stuttered. He glanced behind him at the control panel.

As if on command, all of the Poké Balls opened up simultaneously, releasing all of the Pokémon inside them.

Pokémon of every size and type charged towards Red and the man. "Ahhhh!" The two yelled together.

"Now look what you've done!!" The man practically screamed, leaning over Red.

The younger boy recoiled, startled. "I d-didn't mean to..."

As he finished speaking, a small Pidgey flew straight at them. It swerved up at the last moment, narrowly missing running into the man. Instead, it pooped on his head before flying away.

The man growled, Pidgey- poop covering his face.

"Yuk..." Red muttered.

"Just get them back!" The man shouted, turning towards Red.

"Okay!!" Red replied and ran after the Pokémon.

Later (MUCH later)...

"How... many more...?"

"... Hufff... hufff... uhhh..." Red quickly counted all of the Pokémon in their Poké Balls.

"Don't... tell me... that some... *huff*... escaped." The man, Professor Oak, sighed, exasperated, noticing a shattered window.

"I- I'll go out an' get 'em!" Red shouted, running towards the door.

"Ohhhh, no you don't, Poké Theif!" Professor Oak grabbed Red's shirt, preventing him from going any further.

"But I'm not...!" Red complained. "I'm sorry I came into your Poké- Lab uninvited... I'm sorry I set your Pokémon loose!" His face reddened a bit in pain from Professor Oak's grip on his shirt. "But we've gotta get 'em back, or..."

"It's too late for that..." Professor Oak told him, glancing outside at the sun's position in the sky. "It'll be dark before we find them all."

Red took this moment of distraction as a chance to free himself from Professor Oak's grasp. "But we cant just give up!" He once again started running for the door. "I'm going after 'em!"

He ran outside, only to be stopped by an unfamiliar sound.

Ching! Ching!

"You think you can do it by yourself?" Professor Oak asked from on top of a small bicycle. "You won't know what to look for!"

Red smiled kindly at the Professor, thankful for his help.

"And after we get them all back, you'd better believe..." He grabbed Red's jacket sleeve as he biked past. "That I'm turning you in!!"

"Yes sir!" Red said, having to run to keep up with Professor Oak.

Viridian City

"Here, kitty, kitty," Professor Oak cooed, getting closer to a Meowth. "Now!" He told Red.

Red threw his Poké Ball at the Meowth.

"Gotcha!" He shouted happily as the Meowth went into the Poké Ball. "Now... only one left."

Professor Oak wiped the sweat forming on his face. "If I had known I'd be chasing them all the way to Viridian City... I'd have said I'm too old for this..." He walked beside Red.

"The last one we have to get is Bulbasaur," Red said from on top of Professor Oak's bike.

"Y-yes... but that one..." Professor Oak began.

Red turned his head. "There it is!" He pointed to the Grass- type.

Bulbasaur took one look at them and began running away.

"It's going in there!" Red shouted, realizing that the Viridian Gym was up ahead. "Hurry!" He hopped off of the bike as he and Professor Oak ran towards the Gym.

They opened the door to see nothing but darkness. Spiderwebs (or should I say Spinarak webs?) hung from the corners and on every wall.

"Oosh," Red muttered, staring at a a small bust of a man, most likely the Gym Leader.

Professor Oak looked around. "Where would it go...?" He searched for the Bulbasaur.

"Oh- ho- ho. There you are." He noticed Bulbasaur cowering in the corner of the room. He smiled and brought out its Poké Ball. "Just come to daddy, little..."

Immediately Bulbasaur charged towards Professor Oak, slamming into his side.

"Oog!" The man called out in pain.

"Now, really! I'm your owner...!" Professor Oak told it, rubbing his side. Bulbasaur growled softly at him.

"Don't be afraid, Bulbasaur," Red said, running in front of Professor Oak. "Of course you're nervous..." he stepped closer to the Bulbasaur, speaking gently. "It's the first time you've been outside." The Bulbasaur seemed to calm down, so he continued. "You we're kept separate from the others in the Poké- Lab, weren't you? I bet you's never seen slither living thing besides the ol' Prof, huh?"

Professor Oak stared at them, unable to believe what he was seeing.

Bulbasaur smiled and ribbed its head against Red's leg happily.

"Yeah, that's a good boy. Are you hungry?" Red asked, petting the Pokémon's head.

KRI-

They froze, and Red turned around.

A huge Machoke stood over them.

"I- It's..." Red began.

"A wild Machoke!" Professor Oak finished for him.

The Machoke attacked, and lunged for Red. Its fist stretched towards his face in a punch.

Bulbasaur gasped, not wanting to see Red injured. It stretched out its vines and wrapped them around Machoke's arm.

"Prof!! D'you see that?!" Red shouted excitedly, forgetting about the danger momentarily. "What's the Bulbasaur's best attack?"

He turned his head, only to notice that the Professor was leaned against the wall, unconscious.

"Oh, great... What next? Wait... If it's got a bulb..." Red slowly came up with an idea, but had to jump out of the way as Machoke attempted to punch him again.

Red leaped onto the ground, an Machoke slammed its fist into the ground beside him.

"Th- there's no way..." Red whispered, cornered against the wall.

He turned his head slightly, and noticed a gleam of sunlight coming from a hole in the wall. "Wait..." his idea came back to him. "Wh- what if...? I guess... I gotta..." He turned around. "Try!!" He shouted, pushing the doors open, and allowing the full sunlight to come inside. The Bulbasaur stood in front of the door, soaking in all the sunlight it needed.

Then, the Bulbasaur fired its attack, shooting a bright beam of light at the Machoke.

The Machoke staggered, burns covering its whole body, before it collapsed, defeated.

"You knew... about the Bulbasaur's Solar Beam?" Professor Oak asked, sitting up.

"Naw, but I figured, you know, plants turn sunlight into energy... And this guy has a plant on its back, so..." Red trailed off, rubbing the back of his head.

Professor Oak smiled. "... You... you just... figured...?" He stifled back a laugh, but quickly gave up trying to hold it in and began laughing uncontrollably. Red watched silently, not sure what else to do.

"The Bulbasaur is yours. Seems like he's taken quite a liking to you, anyway." Professor Oak smiled kindly at Red.

"Y... you mean, really? Cool!" Red grinned at the Bulbasaur's Poké Ball.

"But first... I've gotta make it clear," he turned to Professor Oak, suddenly serious. "I did not break into your Poké- Lab to steal Pokémon. I only wanted you to teach me to be a better Pokémon Trainer."

His mind flashed to the night before, where he had seen the... Mew?

"Y'see, yesterday-"

~~•~~•~~•~~

"... I see..." Professor Oak nodded and turned away from Red. "But do you know what it takes to be great?

"Does it mean knowing a lot of clever tricks? Does it mean having a Poké- Powerhouse at your arsenal? Is that what you think makes a great Pokémon Trainer?"

Red was quiet for a moment as he thought about the answer.

"If you think so, you're wrong," Professor Oak answered himself. "What counts is what's in your heart.

"You has that connection with the Bulbasaur... That feeling, from deep within, is the key to becoming a great Pokémon Trainer." He looked at Red. "What's your name, son?"

"Red, sir," Red answered.

"Here, Red." He handed him a small red device. "This is a Pokédex- ... an encyclopedia or Pokémon. Whenever you meet a Pokémon, enter your data here.

"By the time you've put in all your Pokémon data..." Professor Oak continued as Red opened up the Pokédex and was looking through it. "You may have well become one of the truly great Trainers."

Wow! Me...

One of the greats...
