(1) A Glimpse Of The Glow
In a place called Pallet Town...
"Fooey! It bounced off again!" A little boy complained.
"My turn! My turn!" A young girl stepped forward to face the wild Nidorino.
The boy took a step back. "D'you really think you've got a chance?"
"Oh, be quiet." The girl ignored him and prepared a Poké Ball to throw. "I'm going to catch this Pokémon and make it my personal pet! Watch this!" Determined, she threw the Poké Ball as hard as she could at the Nidorino.
Bonng!
"Huh?" The Poké Ball didn't do a thing to the Nidorino. "I-It b-bounced off...?" The girl stared at the Pokémon in disbelief.
"Hahaha! You can't catch a Pokémon like that!" A new voice spoke. "If you want to catch a Pokémon," he closed one eye in an 'I know it all' manner. "...First you've gotta weaken it... then throw the Poké Ball..
"F'rinstance, try this! Go, Poli!" He threw his pokeball, releasing his powerful Poliwhirl.
"Give it the Water-Gun!" Poli nodded at its Trainer and moved its hands towards the Nidorino. The Poliwhirl shot a powerful blast of water at the Nidorino, causing it to become confused.
"Wow!" The young boy said, amazed.
"It looks dizzy!" The young girl said, watching the Nidorino and older boy in awe.
"Yeah!" The older boy agreed. "An' now that Nidorino's weak, I throw the Poké Ball."
He threw the Poké Ball at the Nidorino, and the Ball enclosed around the Nidorino.
"Ha ha! Gotcha, Nidorino!" The boy exclaimed, picking up the caught Pokémon and holding it above his head.
"Cool!" The young boy said, running towards the older boy.
"That was great, Red!" Another child said.
By now the older boy, Red, was surrounded by four other children, all staring at him in amazement. Red spun the newly caught Poké Ball on his finger, enjoying their praise.
Everybody knows me in Pallet Town. And why not? I'm the best Pokémon Trainer around!
Red smiled at the children around him.
Huh? What are Pokémon, you ask?
Strange creatures that live in the forests and lakes.
I don't know how many kinds of Pokémon there are in the world...
He and the children walked off, the sun beginning to set.
But I know I'm gonna catch 'em all!
"Hey Red, do you know Professor Oak?" The young boy from earlier asked.
Red turned his head. "The old guy at the edge of town?" He guessed. "What about that weirdo?" He closed his eyes and continued walking with his hands behind his head.
"Well..." The young boy began.
"People day he knows a lot about Pokémon," the girl finished for him.
"Maybe he can teach us some things about how to catch them..." another child chimed in.
"You don't need that old nut." Red shrugged his shoulders. "I'll teach you everything you need to know."
The children all looked at each other. "Maybe. But they say that Professor Oak taught his grandson to be one of the world's greatest Pokémon Trainers..."
"Grandson?!" Red echoed.
"He's been studying overseas for a long time and just got back," The young boy answered.
"... Hmph!!" Red brought out Poli's Poké Ball. "I don't care who he is, he doesn't stand a chance against me!!"
He held up his Poké Ball up to the sinking sun. "Yeah!"

"See you tomorrow!" The young boy called to Red, turning to go back home. The other children stayed with him, and waved to Red as well.
"See ya!" Red replied back, waving.
He turned away once they had left and walked, looking towards the ground. His feet kicked up dust with every step he took. "Hmm... The old Professor Oak, huh...? -Oomf!"
As he was talking to himself, he bumped into something. "Hey!"
Red looked up, and saw a man glaring at him. He wore a black suit, and a black cap. "Watch it, you worm!" The man growled.
"Eep!" Red squeaked in fright.
The man grunted and trudged off to join some others. They all wore the same black clothing.
"Wh-where'd those guys come from?" Red mumbled quietly, watching them. "Hey!" He noticed that they all had Poké Balls on a belt around their waists. Those are Poké Balls! "They've gotta be Pokémon Trainers." He carefully followed them, making sure to stay hidden to avoid being seen.
"It must be hiding in the general area!!" The rude man from earlier spoke to the others. "Do not rest until you find it! Find the Phantom Pokémon!!"
Phantom Pokémon? Red thought to himself, hiding behind a tree. Never heard of it!
"We have not yet searched the West Wood!" The other members shouted.
"Comb it to the last blade!!" The man demanded, his voice full of authority. The other men ran off in search of the Phantom Pokémon.
Red blinked at them for a few seconds. "Thanks for the tip, guys!" He said, sticking out his tongue. "That Phantom Pokémon'll be mine... or my name's not Red!" He ran off to find it first.

The West Wood
A Poké Ball fell.
"Great... They're not here yet," Red whispered. In his arms he was carrying Poké Balls. At least twenty. "Where aaare you, li'l Phantom Pokémon...?" He called out, turning his head to find it.
"Huh?" He noticed something nearby. "Wh-what's... that?!
"And who's that?!" He grinded his teeth in a mix of anger and disappointment. "One o' those creeps beat me to it!!"
Before him was a boy, about his age. He had spiky brown hair, and blue eyes. He was looking at a small, pink Pokémon. It had a tiny, catlike face and a long tail.
"Now!" The newcomer shouted, throwing a Poké Ball. "Charmander, Go!!"
"A Pokémon!" Red whispered in shock. "He's a Pokémon Trainer!"
The stranger's orange lizard Pokémon leaped into the air, shooting fire at the pink Pokémon from its mouth.
The pink Pokémon seemed startled, but easily evaded the Pokémon's attack and floated above both the flames and the Charmander.
"Yeesh... I've never seen a Pokémon battle like this," Red mumbled from where he was hiding in the grass nearby. ...His Pokémon... That's a Charmander. But what's that glowing creature?! He looked at the pink Pokémon. I've never seen one like it.
Well... go, Charmander! Beat that thing! Red thought encouragingly.
The stranger watched both his and the mysterious Pokémon fight, not saying a word. Finally he spoke up. "Enough! Charmander, return!"
"What the-?!" Red said, watching in disbelief.
Charmander stopped fighting, and allowed itself to be returned inside its Poké Ball. The stranger caught the Poké Ball and was preparing to leave when Red suddenly burst from his hiding place.
"What d'you think you're doing?!" He went towards the stranger. "You almost had the thing, you, you-!!"
The stranger looked up at him, remaining silent.
"Hmf!" Red breathed, determined to prove this boy wrong.
"My turn!! Go, Poli!!" He sent out his Poliwhirl. "Water-Gun!!" The Poliwhirl released its powerful Water-type attack from its hands.
The pink Pokémon glanced at it, and with a blinding light, attacked. Red had to shield his eyes from the bright light. When he opened them again he saw that Poli had fainted with that one hit.
"Poli!" He shouted in shock, not believing that his star Pokémon had just fainted to anyone, much less in one attack.
He took a step towards his injured Pokémon, but the pink Pokémon darted in front of him. "Eee!" He called, moving his hands to cover his face again. Almost immediately, the mysterious Pokémon disappeared.
Red ignored this and ran to his Pokémon's side. "Poli! C-come on, snap out of it, buddy!"
The stranger watched him, a frown on his face. "Are you blind?" Red froze. "Didn't you notice anything while you were watching us fight?
"I could tell almost immediately that there was a vast difference in strength. That's why I stopped the fight." He turned away from Red, his Poké Ball in his hand. "Know your limitations. Or you'll only beat yourself." He started walking. "Remember that," he added over his shoulder, a smirk on his face.
"Y'mean I... I actually... lost...?" Red breathed, his voice hardly above a whisper. Tears threatenned to fall down his cheeks.
The men in black clothing ran into the area, looking around.
"The field...?"
"It's been burnt! What happened here?!"
One of them noticed Red, sitting with Poli. "Answer me, Worm!! What have you done?!" He shouted in anger.
"Ignore him!" Another man yelled. "The Mew is what counts! It might still be nearby!!"
The man next to Red sighed and nodded, before turning to everyone else. "Go!!" They all ran off, and he followed with them.

Dawn light filtered throughout Pallet Town...
"So this is ol' Prof Oak's lab..." Red muttered, standing in front of it.
"They say he's a mean old guy... So I always kept away..." he glanced down at Poli's Poké Ball. It was still winded from last night's attack.
"But I guess the only place I'll learn to be a great Pokémon Trainer... is here." He sighed and gulped nervously.
With shaky hands, he reached forward to ring the doorbell...
