Pokemon Evolution, and other natural Pokemon happenings
Pokemon Evolution
Many scientists, such as Professor Oak and Professor Juniper, research the evolution of Pokemon. When a Pokemon hatches from an egg, it is at its "basic stage". It hasn't evolved yet, although there are lots of Pokemon that don't evolve. When Pokemon evolve, they get stronger. They can learn different moves, and some Pokemon even get a new type when they evolve. For example, Charmeleon goes from a Fire type to a Fire/Flying type when it evolves into Charizard. Some Pokemon have multiple evolutions, but the most famous is the Evolution Pokemon itself, Eevee. Eevee has eight evolutions. Can you name them all as well as their types?
Here they are:
Flareon- Fire type
Vaporeon- Water type
Jolteon- Electric type
Espeon- Psychic type
Umbreon- Dark type
Leafeon- Grass type
Glaceon- Ice type
and the new Eevee-lution, Sylveon- Fairy type.
Other Pokemon with multiple evolutions are Wurmple (Silcoon and Cascoon) and Tyrogue (Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop).
The way a Pokemon evolves differs from Pokemon to Pokemon. Some evolve by levelling up. Charmeleon evolves into Charizard at level 36, for example. Some need to be traded with other Trainers in order for them to evolve, such as Machoke and Kadabra. They can be traded with any Pokemon in order for them to evolve. Karrablast and Shelmet must be traded with each other for them to evolve. Some Pokemon need to be traded holding an item to evolve, such as Magmar and Electabuzz. There are even Pokemon that evolve when they learn a certain move, level up in a certain location, when holding an item and levelling up at a certain time of day, or when they get very friendly with their Trainer. Some Pokemon, such as Pikachu and Pansage, evolve with stones. These can be evolved at any time, any level. But be careful; stone evolved Pokemon don't learn moves as easily as other Pokemon, and some moves can only be learned at their pre-evolved stage. Of course, you can always use TMs and HMs to teach Pokemon moves.
Shiny Pokemon
If you see a Pokemon that is differently coloured than it usually is, be sure to catch it! Shiny Pokemon are incredibly rare. The chances of finding just one are about 1 in 8100 Pokemon, and of course you can encounter 8100 Pokemon and none of them were shiny. There are some ways to increase your chances of finding shiny Pokemon, though:
Pokeradar: This is an item found only in Sinnoh. If you walk through 40 patches of grass, one patch will rustle. If it is shining, there is a shiny Pokemon there.
Breeding Pokemon of different origins: If you breed, say, a male Charmander from an English game and a female one from a Japanese game, you get a better chance of finding a shiny Charmander in the egg. The chances are still somewhat slim, but they are a lot better than those of finding a shiny Pokemon in the wild. Also, this method lets you pick what species you obtain, so you can pick the baby Pokemon by breeding a female of the same species.
Shiny Charm: If you can complete the National Pokedex in Unova, you will get a Shiny Charm, making your chances of finding a Shiny Pokemon better.
Pokerus
Pokerus is a Pokemon virus. It is very rare; in fact you would have a better chance of finding a Shiny Pokemon in the wild than having your Pokemon catch the Pokerus. Nurse Joy will tell you if your Pokemon has Pokerus. Pokerus will spread to other Pokemon in your party. Once a Pokemon has gotten over its Pokerus, it becomes immune to it. In other words, it won't catch it again. Now, you're probably thinking, "That is all very good, but how does Pokerus actually affect the Pokemon?" Good question. Pokemon infected with Pokerus will level up faster, so if one of your Pokemon has it, put it at the front of your party, so you can make the most of it because, like I said, once a Pokemon has recovered it will never again be able to catch Pokerus, even if it is surrounded by infected Pokemon.
Breeding
Pokemon are able to breed. I have talked a little bit about this above, but I will go over the subject of breeding now. It doesn't matter how old the parent Pokemon are. They will be able to breed. To get your Pokemon to breed, leave a male and a female of the same egg group at the Pokemon Day Care. After a while, come back and you will get a Pokemon egg. It will hatch into the basic stage of the female's species. Another way to breed is to leave the Pokemon you want to get with a Ditto. This is handy if the Pokemon you want to get only appears in males, or if it doesn't even have a gender. This is the only way you can get a Phione, as they come from Manaphy. (Of course, you could always trade with someone who is willing to give up their Phione, but without trading the only way to get one is by breeding a Manaphy with a Ditto) Manaphy is the only legendary Pokemon that can breed.
